Ed Schieffelin Monument - Tourist attraction in Tombstone, United States
This place has great views. Its free and open to the public at all times
In his final will, Ed Schieffelin, founder of Tombstone, asked that his body be brought back to Tombstone from Oregon after he had struck it rich and made millions. His body was to be dressed in his miner clothes, complete with lamp and pickaxe. The monument is quite large and there is a plaque on the front that sings the praises of this man who braved many perils including Apache attacks and scammers to stake his fortune and turn this wilderness plot into a thriving town.
Don’t really care about pioneer history
Just outside Tombstone on a dirt road you can see this monument to Ed Sheiflein founder of Tombstone AZ. Great views and beneath this monument is buried the old silver prospector himself.
If you like history it was pretty cool. The sign is so old and faded you can barely read it.
Great access to this quiet monument burial.
It was nice to see a monument to the founder of Tombstone.
Historical and great to see.
Cool spot watch out for the invisible Rock sticking up out of the ground when youre pulling in
Just a special place for a special man. Just wish the sign was easier to read.
It was a wonderful experience knowing that someone is buried there shuffling and is silver there if you find it its yours youre supposed to be a red blanket thats hiding that has gold and if you find it its yours call me from the two Stone and experience all of it its awesome
Worth it because Tombstone would not exist except for this guy! Free. Fun little 30 minutes max stop. Past the guest ranch at the big rock cairn
It was neat to see
Peaceful place to check out the surrounding environment.
Is this the spirit of Ed Schieffelin ? When I was taking the picture I didnt notice this blurry coming from the top.
The Monument for the miner on the claim who the town was named after
There is a bee hive in the Monument, Please do not disturb it 🖤
To bad the sign was sun faded and the other was vandalized
Fun to be outside and beautiful views.
It was just really cool! Havent been to Tombstone since I was a kid, totally different from what I remembered.
Great burgers
Tombstone history! Easy to drive to.
Died in Oregon buried here
Love old history like this!
Ok so be advised...there isnt a lot her. Theres the monument...theres the picnic table...and theres an information sign which needs serious replacing. I dont know how she did it, but she was actually able to read the sign. If you go visit here, youll see how amazing that is. The view is nice...all in all totally worth visiting. Its seriously like 7 minutes from the heart of Tombstone. Travel north on historic Allen st....and thats it. Youll see the monument for sure. 😉
Fun place to ride to on the way to or back from Tombstone. Neat western history.
Gorgeous area of local historical significance. A place for quiet reflection.
The founder of Tombstone is buried here but they dont keep it up which is sad, you can hardly read the writing on the monument.
I gave four stars because I feel like you have to take these things in context. Its a rock cairn in the middle of the desert so theres not going to be much there and in that regard its perfectly fine. It was a little less clean than I would desire, hence 4 Stars. Taking it in context I hiked to there from Highway 82. There are several well-worn horse trails leading up to it and the area is quite beautiful. Its an interesting bit of History, if you like that sort of thing.
Ed would not be happy. His monument has gone to ruin. The inscription long ago faded in the weather and sun and now it looks like the local hooligans use it to prop up glass bottles for target practice. Theres glass all over the place to the point we were afraid our dog would get a cut paw, so we left. You know Tombstone is in many ways charming but in many other ways it is rather depressing because it is kind of ratty and unkept. This is this is more of monument to that than it is to Ed who started the town back when they told him he should leave or the place would "become his tombstone".They call this the town too tough to die but if they cant keep the monument up and they cant make downtown look a little better then maybe one day it will. What tombstone needs is an infusion of capital from investors who might, for example, turn it into a western version of Williamsburg. Instead, this is like Gatlinburg with historic buildings that have been hollowed out to hold cheap trinkets and souvenirs and tacky imitations of "authentic" Western Wear.
Interesting Monument. This is the guy that named Tombstone.
Tombstone would not exist without this man. It is sad that this memorial is neglected. The lettering needs touched up. The broken beer bottle glass needs picked up.
All I can say is AMAZING...
Very cool
An interesting bit of history, forgotten by the mainstream. A rough dirt road leads to this rock monument. Not much there beyond a plaque and the rocks.
Pretty cool
Nice monument, dirty area.
This is awsome!!! And amazing if you are near come check it out and also check out tombstone the awsome old west town 2 miles away.
Very cool not much but cool if in tombstone
Showing family the memorial. I was disappointed in the run down condition of the area, trashy, refuse container full and in need of attention. The plaque with information about Schiefflin was sun bleached and difficult to read. Hard to believe its part of the Tombstone Courthouse State Park.
Awesome to learn about history, then actually see it:)
Interesting.
Plaque needs to be updated but great
Beautiful memorial, nicely built. Location is beautiful.
The signage is no longer legible. Im not sure what it was all about or why I went to go see a pile of rocks.
Much bigger than it looked in pictures. Really nice, sad that the ground around the monument is covered in broken beer bottle glass. :/
Hidden off the beaten path but very cool. Its a shame the tribute sign which speaks about the man has faded
Amazing views very historical, watch out for rattle snakes
Awesome
Too far out on very rough road
