My partner and I stayed here for a couple nights in a bungalow. I was a little concerned with the compost toilet inside the room and the potential smell, but this was no issue at all. The hotel is almost completely sustainable, for example reusing grey water for watering non-edible garden plants and giving recycling to women in town who then re-sell for some extra money. The property is beautiful, with so many gorgeous plants and flowers. The food was delicious and we felt so cared for by everyone there. We also did the sauna, an incredible, rejuvenating experience. Yes, it is a little walk from town, but totally doable. We actually walked there from San Pedro, with our stuff! Of course, taking a tuk tuk is also an easy and accessible option. The owner was very sweet and accommodating to our requests and questions. We have a found a new friend in her and good memories from this place.

This is place is absolutely disgusting and the service was not accommodating to all of the issues we encountered. There were bed bugs in my friend’s cabin, there was hair and cum stains on our blankets, our room smelled like urine because of the compost toilets. They seemed annoyed with us because we complained. My friend asked to have 3 of her items washed that touched the bed with the bed bugs and they didn’t even offer to pay for this. After asking for them to cover the cost, they agreed to wash it for free, but my friend had to pay to dry it if she wanted the dryer. The only reason she was washing it in the first place is because there were bed bugs in her room. I would think the minimal accommodation would be to wash her things after being in a room infested with bed bugs.

We didnt stay in the hotel, but enjoyed a tasty, affordable vegan lunch. The restaurant is quite open, so if youre heading there in the rainy season, maybe take a jumper. I was lucky in that I had a cat warning my lap the whole time.Staff were super friendly. We will be returning to try their other dishes before we leave.

My partner and I spent a few nights at Eco Hotel MayAchik and really enjoyed it. The hotel is located a good 10-15 min walk from the lancha and the main streets, making it a very relaxing place to go back to after touring around the lake. Mind you, the walk from the lancha is fairly uphill, so if you have a heavy backpacks you might consider taking a tuk tuk (10Q pp). The rooms are surrounded by a big garden on more levels, with hammocks and plenty of tables to chill or eat your food. The shared bathrooms and showers are super clean and work perfectly. It was really nice to see eco toilets working so well and being kept so clean by the customers and staff alike! The shared kitchen is well equipped, so you can cook your own food. There restaurant has some good vegetarian options, and makes good coffee and cakes (we loved the banana bread). There is also a small sauna, which we totally recommend! Nice vibe, nice staff. Only little downside (probably of San Juan in generalis the amount of wild dogs alla round that bark at night non stop, and which we could hear very well from our room.

What a wonderful experience, a beautiful little retreat with everything you could need. Whether its the delicious vegetarian food, beautiful tropic environment, caring wonderful owner/workers, relaxing hammocks and outdoor spaces or little animal friends this place truly is a nurturing peaceful sanctuary. I spent 4 days here, mostly just hanging around and was none the happier. The staff were great and the owner was awesome, always laughing and super helpful. Everything is at the tip of your finger here too, whether you want to hike Indian Noise Mountain, take a tuk tuk to San Pedro for some food or night life, go hit up the onsite temazcal or shamanic ceremony. I hold this place dear in my heart and hope this helps other who are called to this magical place!

As we were traveling we forgot to rate you on Airbnb, and we felt bad about it. This place deserve 10 stars out of 5. Best place we stayed in Guatemala. Beautiful bedroom (maraquita), calm, cosy, the people working there are so friendly, nice. The food they cook is really really yummy. Make yourself a favour and stay there if you go to San Juan la Laguna. Thousand Thank you for the good time.Thomas and Aimeline (We stayed there the first week of March 2022)

I was really surprised by this place. Its not the cheapest around, but its well worth the price. Its that perfect balance between ecologically conscious, without being too hippy. Comfortable without being crazy expensive. The gym was surprisingly stocked and the yoga platform has plenty of mats to use.The wood fired sauna is fantastic and reasonably priced at Q50 for 1.5 hours. They provide a bouquet of herbs to throw on the stones and it really makes the experience special. You know its authentic because locals rent out the sauna as well and one night we heard some ladies having a temezcal with drumming, copal, and singing. Super cool. The restaurant is tasty and delicious (pupusas and tamals are a fantastic value), and the chocolate for sale is the best we found on the lake. The only negative comment is that there are only 4 outside tables, and two of them are used by staff all day, everyday. There are only 3 hammocks, only one that is placed in a nice location. When we wanted to just read a book, we ended up finding a cafe in town. Also, the kitchen needs a proper restocking. The tea kettle is falling apart, and most of the knifes are chipped or dull.

I absolutely loved staying here. The bed was very comfortable and the cabin had everything we needed. It was the best sleep Ive gotten on this trip. And we could see Indian Nose right from the bed! Bathrooms are kept very clean and the shower is hot and has great pressure. There is a big shared kitchen (only vegetarian cooking allowed), a yoga platform/gym and the most adorable wood fired sauna (book ahead cause its popular). The food at the restaurant is really good and the portions are huge. Tamales and pupusas are a must, the pizza was also delicious. It does take a while though so dont eat here if youre in a rush. The location is super quiet (if you dont count the roosters). Its a 10min walk from the pier and a tuktuk costs only 5Q pp. The only downside is that not many people walk on the path that leads here and the dogs can get very aggressive. We saw them attack a local man. Personally we preferred to take a tuk tuk rather than walk here because of that.Overall San Juan was a fantastic choice. Much more quiet than San Pedro, very local, with weaving workshops and art galleries lining the streets.

Ok place: the hotel is surrounded by nature, the rooms are cozy and have great views, the local staff is very kind and the restaurant serves great food portions. However, the hotel is located 15-20min away from town uphill, and you have to get used to the “eco” part of it: shared dry toilets, bugs in your room (woke up to a giant spider last night), dogs and howls making noise in the middle of the night, and the rooms not being cleaned daily.

I wanted to stay in San Marcos but everything was full so I ended up in Mayachik.First San Juan was the perfect place, more authentic and calm. Then Mayachik was really amazing! Really eco, really chill.I liked how the owner treats all the workers, everyone looks so happy there.Maybe just the food could be a bit better, portions were really big but taste was just ok :)

If you want to have a very special experience in part of the Amazon forest this is the best place to be, all natural and distinctive, beautiful and unforgettable, incomparable place. All rooms are made from beautiful, best quality wood from the same forest. 90% of all materials and products that you get at regular hotel and what them offer you to you feel comfortable, is from local farmers and almost everything is made by hands from the native Guatemala people. If you really love nature, here you will fall into a deeper love and connection. Around all rooms and yards are planted of all types of medical and nutritional herbs.I know is even more of what I mentioned to you, that I remember...If you look for Hyatt, Ramada or fancy place forget it about here.💯👍🌏⛰🏞🌋I WARRANTY YOU WILL GET A NEW UNIQUE EXPERIENCE 🌐🏔🌋🌏⛈🌞🌈Almost forgot the wonderful starry sky 😁😁😁❤❤❤❤

Felt very taken care of both times I stayed here and the location is very calm, restorative, and full of nature. We got a free sauna the first time we stayed because I think the owner saw the stress on our face. I know where to go if I’m ever back in lake Atitlan.

Honestly didnt have a great experience. I stayed in one of the brand new private rooms and it was full of flies. I dont mean 5 flies, but at least 15! They buzzed around all night long making it impossible to rest well. Additionally, it smelled like burnt cheese and I couldnt open any window or anything to ventilate. It was so stuffy and the air was awful. There was also an issue with the key and they hadnt made any copies of it and I had to wait... If you stay here, dont stay in the new rooms.

Mayachik is a fantastic vegetarian restaurant situated just a short walk from the centre of San Juan, among beautiful jungle vegetation and in a peaceful and tranquil atmosphere. This place is a hidden gem in San Juan and a must-visit.The restaurant is located a 5-7 minute walk from San Juan at the end of a quiet gravel road in the scenic countryside. The restaurant is inside a rustic and simple yet charming wood building with a palm leaf roof. According to the website, it is an ecologically constructed building using natural ingredients and is also self-sustainable, which I loved! The grounds around the restaurant were gorgeous and it was a natural paradise with lots of lush tropical plants, trees and colourful flowers everywhere. Inside the restaurant, there were wooden tables with multi-coloured tablecloths and large open-air windows offering fantastic views of the surrounding gardens and jungle. I loved the laid-back, serene and peaceful atmosphere while being among nature. The menu featured a selection of healthy vegetarian dishes and traditional Guatemalan favourites. The vegetarian tostadas were super satisfying and delicious! The portion sizes were very generous, the staff were kind and cheerful and the service was fast and friendly.Eating a delicious vegetarian meal surrounded by such incredible natural beauty and in a comfortable and tranquil atmosphere, was just perfection. This restaurant is definitely a hidden gem in San Juan and a must-visit for vegetarians when you travel to Lake Atitlan! I would have given better rating, but the last day of our stay almost ruined it.We were staying at the bungalow next to dorms one. The bungalow itself was really nice: spacious, clean, good bed, etc. the toilet was a bit smelly at times, as it is was eco toilet. also shower did not drain that well, but that did not bother us that much. Food was nice too. Also, all the staff were really lovely. But the last day,Friday, was just a nightmare. It was some saints celebration and the whole night there were fireworks going off. Had hardy any sleep. At around 5-6am we were woken up by the staff, as they have a storage room under the bungalow and kept goin there to take their equipment. 6AM! come on! and then they kept going into that storage room all day. The worst place for it. And then rubbish behind the bungalow and around that storage.Furthermore, on Friday, the whole day they had some kids come in from school to have all day talk next to our bungalow. we were not informed of this at all. They were literally the whole day there! not relaxing at all. And then while we were inside the bungalow, they set off there food counter on our porch! We were literally stuck inside. There was no mention about this even, nor an apology from the staff!Furthermore, it was mentioned that there is a sauna in the premises so i though we can try it. We mentioned this to the staff and they called us at 6 to go to sauna. When we got there there were maybe like 8 men bathing in the sauna before us. After around 10 minutes in the sauna we decided to go because it was not really nice to sit in someones sweat. Because the sauna was wet, it felt like we were sitting in the bath after someone washed in it. Not very relaxing! but i though it free, its fine. We had to pay for this! we literally had to pay for someone else to use the sauna! this was just ridiculous. This last day was really disappointing. if we would not have payed ahead, we would have left. Should have asked for a refund for the last day.

Things I loved:*The staff where so helpful, I love that they work with local people. They where also really attentive and friendly.*There food is great, I had so much awesome, local, and fresh food while I was there. I wish i could eat there every day.* The room was amazing, I loved every minute in my little bungalow, it was also really cheap considering everything it came with.* The environment is also amazing, they have a luscious garden with hammocks and even a sauna.*Compared to the other towns around the lake San Juan is really non touristy and relaxed. I even had locals just wanting to have a chat with me not even trying to sell me something.

Great place to stay, setup by a really nice Austrian woman by the name of Evelynn, whos really helpful and knowledgeable about the area. Its very natural and self-sustaining which gives the place a very nice feeling to it, although the toilets are not for everyone. It has a kitchen that you can use, and the restaurant has really nice midrange food. Its a 5 min walk from the city which has a few shops and restaurants. This place was amazing! Even if they hadnt saved us by taking our last minute reservation so late at night, wed still have been impressed by this place and its staff. Although we had some noisy neighbors, this place is tucked away for privacy, peace and quiet. Its ecologically friendly with solar, gardens they use for food, and composting toilets. Dont let this scare you, its a beautiful and comfortable place to stay. The grounds are breathtaking and well kept, and the staff here is friendly and helpful. We were warned about hot water shortages because the water is heated by solar, but had no issues at all. We also really enjoyed the food that was prepared for us, all of it was delicious. Cant go wrong staying here, and if you like cats and dogs, there are a few that make those place a permanent home that are very friendly. Great place!
