Ebisuya Sushi - Sushi restaurant in Hilo, United States
Seriously, I dont know how this place is as highly rated as it is. Look at this picture. Small pieces of fish. But thats not really the problem. Even if they were larger, they were mediocre at best. The uni was the best of the three. The salmon and tuna were so-so. And they had no hamachi, so I dont know how that would have been. With all of the other nearby choices, you might be better off choosing one of them. I know next time I will.
Got takeout and ordered the 26 pc with the sashimi and the rainbow roll. Both tasted fresh and had a Lot of great flavors
Top tier chef and incredible price. Fish is fresh every day. Fast and professional service.
Solid sushi joint. Price was fantastic considering how good the sushi was as well.
Their sushi rolls are great!
Friendly workers, great small business. The nigiris arent as thick as they used to be but the rice is always consistent. I know the big table wasnt very spatially efficient but I wish theyd bring it back.
Tasty and fresh, great bang for your buck - less than $100 fed 4 people very well. Fish was high quality and specialty rolls were yummy.
We love it there food so good so delicious definitely love it ❤️ we do take out for dinner every Wednesday our son favorite place take out!
By far the best sushi in Hilo.....seriously...and the staff is awesome. I can eat there every day!!!!
Grabbed it for takeout for a picnic at the park by the water. Everything was great except the food. 😝 Its not bad, but wasnt that fresh or good either. Reasonable value. If youre looking for a nice sushi dinner, we much preferred Sakura Sushi instead. Especially the Volcano roll. 😍
Weve been by for takeout several times and were always welcomed and assisted by a lovely woman who double-checked our order. The sushi has always been excellent and well-priced. We love this place!
Takeout only. We got the 30 piece option and they kindly switched out some of the shrimp for California rolls since I’m allergic. Delicious sushi and really welcoming polite staff.
Great sushi deals with great prices for Hawaii. Due to COVID only takeout available. Friendly service, be sure to phone in order unless you want to wait.
One of the best sushi we have ever tried. We are from New York City and we had the best of everything, of course. We tried Ebisuyas sushi when we were on vacation in Hawaii a week ago. The next day we literally wanted to drive back from the north of the island to order again. Hope it gives a clear understanding of how good their sushi are. Their miso soup is awesome too. If you are in Hilo, dont miss out to try sushi at this place.
I’m from Cleveland Ohio and I have had tons of different sushi. New York, Chicago, and Cleveland where we have some excellent restaurants too. This has been the best sushi experience I’ve had. I did takeout and I have no regrets. I got 70 pieces, two platters and a speciality roll. All of it was fresh and tasted amazing.Thank you for the great service and quality food and making my time here in Hilo even better.
FANTASTIC sushi. Wow! And very affordable. It’s take out only at this time, but boy is it good. We fed 2 adults and 2 kids with left overs for 50$. And the quality of the fish was outstanding. Sweet, smooth, silken pieces. Highly recommended!
This restaurant has terrible customer service and sushi quality was horrible! 日本人旅行者の方は絶対行かないほうが良いですよ!。Dont go to this restaurant. My wife and I went to this place in April 2018. I still remember our horrible experience, so I am writing this review for people who are wondering if they should go to this restaurant or not. My wife is American and I am Japanese, I imagine we looked like tourists when we went to this restaurant. While we waited for our food, the server moved us to a new table TWICE to accommodate new customers coming into the restaurant. It took more than 30 mins for our food to come to our table. There was no apology for our inconvenience or long wait time. It looked like this restaurant delivered foods to their existing customers earlier than us since the clerks kept talking to the existing customers and didnt talk to us at all while waiting. We had no choice but to feel that the restaurant ignored us intentionally. I grew up in Japan and I know how real sushi tastes like. Sushi at this place had a gross low quality disgusting taste!
Excellent sushi, I got the sushi combo for three and decent price and ok service.
Excellent sushi options at a really good price. Only down side is when it’s gets busy the chefs get overwhelmed, took about 40 min for two chirashi bowls, however they were delicious.
Probably some of the best sushi Ive ever had. The lady who took our order over the phone and greeted us at the restaurant was very sweet. We got four rolls and went through them in less than 10 minutes. Enjoyed it so much that we had to go back the next day.
Homey and very affordable spot to snag some delicious sushi. Customers can expect prices $1-3 less than the average sushi spot while still enjoying uncompromising quality.
Amazing quality sushi at very reasonable prices! This is better than any sushi Ive had one the mainland, and is probably as good as you will find outside of Japan. Highly recommend stopping buy. The sushi platters offering 3 rolls and 8 nagiri are only 25 dollars and is enough to feed 2!
My meal at Ebisuya was fantastic. The prices were very good for the portions which were served. We arrived at the very beginning of the dinner hour, when there was only one other table seated. We did discover, like other reviewers mentioned - the pace of service is extremely slow. We came prepared for it and were still surprised at how long "long" could be - close to 40 minutes for our relatively small order when the restaurant was empty. I would recommend coming in just a little bit before you expect to be hungry. The fish was extremely fresh and prepared just right - the flavors shone through without much dressing up. #foodie #sushi #letsguide
Amazing food, the manager (owner?was quick and super kind even with a packed restaurant. I would totally recommend this place to anyone wanting quality sushi from the California rolls to the Dragon rolls!
We ate here on Easter. I was pleasantly surprised it was open! There werent a lot of people there because of the holiday I expect. You could tell by the worn in feeling of the place that its really popular. The atmosphere was very casual, very old Hawaii-Japanese classic feeling. The service was very good. The Japanese woman who served us gave me the impression she might be the proprietor of the restaurant. She was extremely kind and attentive. I really appreciated her! They close earlier than one might expect but that wasnt a problem for us.The sushi was excellent. The fish incredibly fresh as one would expect in Hawaii. The place had a traditional been-around-forever feeling which I think is accurate. It really has been around for a long time.I think if you are in Hilo and in the mood for very authentic, classic sushi, this place is where you should go. Its not fancy or glitzy. Its simple and perfect. You order and they bring you delicious fish in a very comfortable setting! What more could you ask for!?
Loved the local feel...not your high-end sushi bar in U.S. cities that have become Americanized sushi. But if you have been to Japan, you will love it, simple and cheap. No frills, just ran by 3 people. 2 Japanese owners cook, and 1 local waitress (very sweet).
Dont bother with this place. Gotta start by saying the food was great, especially for the price. However, everything else was pretty average or just terrible. We were sat right away but it took ages for someone to take our order. We got 4 rolls and 1 order of nigiri and it took an hour for them to get it to us. It seemed like everyone else dining in had the same experience. For such a small menu it does not seem like anything should take that long, even for sushi. It did seem like they were getting through all the take our orders quicker, which was pretty frustrating. So maybe trying ordering ahead for take out, otherwise dont come here. Not sure why its so well rated. Hopefully this was just a fluke.
This is my go-to sushi place-- I recommend for casual sushi dining, but not for special occasions. PROS: Great value for good quality sushi, unbeatable for the price. CONS: the restaurants seating is more crowded than average; the ambience is below average; food service is slow.
If I stopped at a restaurant that looked like this in FL, I would never get raw fish there...However, this is Hilo and you cant judge a book by its cover. The sushi was reasonably priced, but it was 5 star quality. We will definitely be back on our next visit.
Love this small place. Sushi was fresh nice portions. Very nice people running it very comfortable. Lot of locals,Service was pretty fast for sushi. As far as beer go they dont. BUT you can go down the street to K.T.A.SUPER STORES.BUY YOUR CHOICE OF BEER BRING IT WITH YOU. All good.like I said nice people. Thankyou.
We celebrated my birthday there and it was a wonderful experience. The wait staff was very attentive, the food was delicious and the prices were quite reasonable. They were even willing to make a few exceptions due to dietary restrictions. Will definitely visit again!
They were super understaffed which explains the food being delayed for 45 minutes. The staff were very kind though. Food and presentation were sad. :( get your sushi at suisan instead.
We randomly found this place right before our flight to the mainland- just WOW. The sushi was so fresh and the price was even better! It was byob so we walked down to the wine shop and grabbed a bottle to split for dinner. For the 30 pc for 25! Just wonderful!!
I love the sushi here—soft and authentic (handmade by Japanese and Hawaiian chefs!). Sometimes, the wait is around 30 minutes, even just to order to go, and some of the waiters/waitresses speak little English, but they are accommodating and friendly! Also, it’s close to the Hilo Farmer’s Market, and many other shops. It also has gluten-and-dairy-free options. :)
Great food very reasonable prices on their selections. Fed a family of 5 for under ninety bucks and this is with sashimi. Easy to get in seating and Im afraid to write this review because more people will eat here. Everything is great. Hand made rolls and cuts for everything. Getting seating is very easy. One of the sushi gems of Hilo.
Awesome sushi and poke bowls and friendly service with good prices.
The sushi was delicious and the price was unbeatable! We got the sushi tray and split it between 2 people and it was the perfect amount of food. Don’t expect super quick service, but good food takes time. Also it’s BYOB so bring a beer or two to enjoy with your dinner.
So fresh, so delicious. The spicy poke on top of the rolls was fantastic. Service was absolutely kind, lots of hospitality. Loved the decorations on the walls, unique and authentic. We went early, it got really busy pretty quickly.
Great sushi and soooo cheap! I don’t know if it’s always like that - the service was incredibly slow. Nice guy but we were there for a long time waiting to be served - it seemed as if they needed more servers. But food was well worth the wait!
Best food on the big island!!! Inexpensive, delicious, quick, fresh. We order a 30 piece variety platter for $22! Yes $22! The staff was very friendly. As you can tell I am sure, I highly recommend!
Excellent hand made sushi had the 30 piece, sashimi combo, 2 cokes and edamame appetizers. Customer Service was excellent and from sitting ordering and served food took all about 10 minutes. Each sushi roll is hand made to perfection. When dipping the sushi into the soy sauce the rice in the sushi rolls does not fall apart. Normally at other places when dipping sushi into the soy sauce the roll falls apart. Not at this place. Great prices and lots of seating. Really enjoyed our first night there. Plan on trying the rest of the menu items.
Absolutely amazing is such a little hole in the wall. Excellent staff and service if my daughter had her choice wed eat there everyday. The freshest best sushi in town. A must !!
Good sushi for a very reasonable price. It gets crowded though, so consider making a reservation.
Busy fun place to have sushi and friends. BYO booze. Beer or hard liquor. Good times with good food
Good sushi restaurant in the center of Hilo. On street parking along with a parking lot just past the restaurant. Reasonable prices and good service.
Great pricesI ordered the 30pc for $22 and the poke and chicken bowl for $13. That was enough for two people. They were friendly and polite.
Tremendously fresh sushi in a non-pretentious atmosphere. Excellent value for what you get.
The prices and portions were AMAZING. I was extremely impressed with the Volcano Tuna Roll with Poke on top. My wife had the dragon roll with cream cheese and the pineapple avocado and cream cheese roll which she highly recommends. I tasted it and the pineapple was a delicate flavor and was not overwhelming. Very tasty place with excellent staff.
Great sushi place ! Very creative and tasty options on the menu. Price is good and reasonable. The only issue I had was the time to follow up with the customers once they get their food. The sushi is so good it disappears fast, so it would be better to see if the customer wants to order more sushi before they finish their plates. Preparation takes a while so its no fun waiting another 10 minutes for another order after your sushi is gone. Besides that I really liked it. Nice Japan style decor too.
Generous portions at a fair price. Sushi was of decent quality although some ingredients (avocados in particulartasted a bit overripe. Service was prompt and efficient. Alcohol is not served but BYO wine/beer/sake is allowed with purchases greater than $10.
