Kloster-Eberbach-Straße 1, 65346 Eltville am Rhein, Germany, Frankfurt am Main
Large Romanesque & Gothic abbey that was deconsecrated in 1803, now making wine & hosting events.
This is a former monastery , now a Vineyard. Area is full of beautiful grape creepers. They are yellowish in color. There is church ⛪ and a hotel in the same premises. There are special events for kids. The day I went here , the place was full of kids with parents. I ❤ love the calmness of the monastery.
Good winery with an history behind. Perfect place for the wine tasting and walking around. Breathtaking views along the trails in sunny weather
Great place to visit, bold winery at old monestery
My skepticism at the €11 entry fee dissipated upon seeing the pristine condition of the almost millennium old buildings, worth a visit in every corner. The shop offers innovative specialties and varied items - impossible to leave without buying anything (better only if they shipped beverages internationally). Onipresent Wi-Fi!
I have lived in the region for four years and so far this splendid abbey has escaped my attention.I visited as part of team building activities where we had arranged an evening program including dinner. I did not visit the abbey itself, but rather explored the well maintained gardens and surroundings. After the first round of team activity we walked to the abbeys vineyard, which is located less than 5 minute walk away, through deep forest and steep paths, therefore proper shoes are necessary. The interesting thing about the vineyard is that its surrounded by the wall and from the top there is a really beautiful view of the Rhine Valley and surrounding towns and vineyards. We were lucky with the weather and had almost absolutely ideal photographic conditions.Part of our visit was wine tasting, which took place in the abbeys hospital that was converted into a wine cellar. The room was very dark, only lit by candles, so it took me a couple minutes to adjust my eyes. There was no place to sit, but during wine tasting it does not really matter as I engaged with colleagues. While we tasted 3 different kinds of Riesling, our tour guide explained the history of the abbey and its wine production tradition. She was a great talker, entertaining and intriguing story teller. Generally I have trouble keeping my attention on a tour such as this, but it was very educational and inspiring.Last part of the evening we spent in a local restaurant right behind the Abbey. Very modern, up-class place with modern and welcoming interior. Small outside seating area located behind the main building, however due to weather condition was closed during our visit. As we were large group, we pre-ordered the food including starters. The charcuterie board looked amazing and tasted even better! The variety of food on the platter was shocking as we had pickled vegetables such as radish or pumpkin, many kinds of cheeses, hams, sausages dried tomatoes, pork greaves stocks and pates. As a main course I had lamb knee which was exceptional! Very tender, juicy, well seasoned, accompanied with mashed potatoes and tomatoes. I really enjoyed myself and cant really fault anything with regards to the food.As for drinks, we had the same wine as during our wine tasting. It was not the best Riesling in the region, but very decent and refreshing nevertheless.Visited in May 2022.
Beautiful spot to visit and grab a delicious Pinot Noir
I loved the place, if you like to try different kind of wines this place should be interesting for you. We could walk trough the different buildings and gardens and of course we tried different local wines, for sure you can will find one that is fitting your taste.
The place is not bad, history is also interesting, but the service is....,mainly fit the tickets front desk...We bought one audio tour, but it broken in the middle if the whole roundtour. In the whole roundtour, nothing to change, only way is totally going out to exchange, then even not sure the ticket can use second times or not. The frontdesks attitude....................NO SUGGESTION to rent the audiotour, machine is slow, and has a high chance broken in between.....
Interesting religious construct famous for having being used for the shooting of"the Name of the Rose"The cellar and the wine pressers are quite impressivePossibility to purchase locally produced wine 🍷 and liquors
it was so good
Take it EASY and test the future at Kloster Eberbach Rheingau near Wiesbaden.A trip into the past is now combined with the future at Eberbach Monastery. Here in the Rheingau, future mobility is currently being tested. EASY stands for "Electric Autonomous Shuttle for You" and runs electrically on the pre-programmed route entirely without a driver. Wish have a safe journey into the future. You find here the great vines at Vinothek and surrounded by nature you can enjoy the culture at the easy way.
Amazing old Abbey and winery
Very quiet
Nice place indeed however1the entry ticket 9.50€ per person is definitely too expensive for what the tour offers2in the room where the wine presses are located, there is no explanation whatsoever of what those machines are and what they were used for and when and by whom. Nothing at all.3)the parking ticket 4.00€ is too expensive. My recommendation is dont go.
We stopped here on a cruise excursion. We really enjoyed touring the grounds and our guide was very knowledgeable. Thanks!
They shot lot of parts of the movie "In the name of the rose" (Umberto Ecowith Sean Connery at this place. It features a wine treasury and is famous for its historical background.
It was set for movie Name of Rose
Beautiful monastery.
Very nice garden and building, the restaurant was very nice as well
Great!
Holystays pilgrims route...
My friends and I visited the abbey in May. We all love the environment and their wine products. Some friends of mine bought 36 bottles of wine and had them delivered to just one address. Unfortunately, the Taiwanese Custom officer in the post office only allowed one person to take 6 bottles and will either destroy the rest or send them back to where they are from. A lady named Marietta Wellmann is helping us to get all the wine by writing some documents to prove that the 36 bottles are for six people, not just one. Im so touched and really appreciate what she has been doing for us. Its all right if it ends up not being able to get all the wine. However, I think its obligated to let the public know how good their service is and how kind the people working there are!
Wondeful experience for international guests!
Amazing place, amazing wine
Nice place to spend some time with business partners or friends. Good food and beautiful surrounding. But take some warm clothes with you if you want to visit the Abbey. Its cold inside, even in summer!
Beautiful Monastery. A must visit with tour guide.
We had a great time at the Abbey. The tour and wine tasting was interesting and fun. Our dinner was delicious. Definitely recommended.
Nice place to taste good wine.
Wife and I went here for a lunch date. Had a blast. Would recommend to anyone.
An interesting site, made more enjoyable by an English-speaking guided tour, which also included wine tasting. Bought some of the wines from the shop too!
Outstanding tour. Really need a guide to get the full show. Dinner was fabulous. Wish the wine shop had been open but our tour was late in the day.
Absolutely fascinating place. Be prepared to spend some time, there is a lot to see.
Seems more interested in events than visitors. An amazing property with a rich history, but unless you get a guide youll feel let down. There is so much to this place, but I feel most of their revenue comes from events, which leaves ticket-purchasing visitors adrift. Still, if you can get a guide, it completely changes the experience. Incredible property, but I expected more for my money.
A very beautiful old abbey. Almost all the presentation texts displayed on the history of the abbey are though in German.
Very inspiring place with great history
the site were The name of the rose was filmed
There is a sense of going back in history as we strolled through the timeless Roman arches of the monastery. The Cistercians had a very simple lifestyle and it is evident from the strong wooden arches with bare furnishings. The church is central to the workings of a monastery and the Roman architecture will make you fall in love with its simplicity. The dining hall of the lay brothers is where all the action used to take place. The wooden wine presses of the 17-19th century are still visible. Although the monks were known for their austerity, but the Baroque period saw the monks showcasing their worldly wealth. The Baroque residence was one of the most elegantly decorated rooms in all of medieval Europe. The richly decorated ceiling takes your breath away.
Great place to see
Visited in 2012. I recognized parts of the Abbey from the movie "In The Name of the Rose!" Wonderful experience walking the paths of scenes in this really good movie! I was floored to learn the histories of this beautiful Abbey and Vinyards! Just beautiful!
Beautiful monastery with great wine. Theyre known for their Riesling. Just wish they had tours in English (you can book private tours at $50 in foreign languages).
The guides were great. Beautiful place and well worth getting the English guide if its available so you can learn about the history of this place!
Beautiful monastery in the mountains.
Just a great place to see and visit. You must try the audio tour. Worth it. Full of wonderful history. At least a couple of hours to see it al.
Lovely cellars and garden
A very old former cloister turned a venue for weekend relaxation and leisure events. Great concerts during August Rheingau Music Festival. Vast variety of amazing wines can be tasted and purchased at the Wine shop.
I bought 2 bottle of Klostter Eberbach Riesling at the beginning of August. It was really delishes wonderful wine. So I wander if the Abbey will impress me as mach as the wine and I didnt disappointed at all. We where on our way to Frankfurt Air Port and the visiting in the Abbey was grand finale for our tour of wine and the colored autumn leaves in Alsas, Rhineland and the Shwartzwald.
Enjoyed every minute of my visit. Beautiful and very well maintained place. The restaurant next door is worthwhile too.
