Eastern Ocean Chinese Restaurant - Chinese restaurant in Tauranga, New Zealand
nice food with reasonable price. roasted duck and pork is nice. Can ask for karaoke also
Its a everyday yumcha & large chinese dishes, consistent
Amazing service & value for money! Highly recommend the roast duck with the sauces . We will be back soon !
Best duck in the bay. Their food is delicious and the staff are so friendly. I recommend bringing a big group as the food is great for sharing amongst eachother but it was also perfect going there with just me, my husband and brother. Definitely try their BBQ pork cake/pastries and their BBQ pork buns.
Rubbish, asked for a vegetable curry with chicken, said I was told I wasnt allowed to sit inside and eat, all tables were booked, no one was even in the restaurant. She charged me $23 bucks for a takeaway container with only1 kind of vege with a very little amount of chicken.. never going back there
By far the best Chinese restaurant in the Bay. A great selection of dishes to choose from. This isnt the average fish n chip Chinese food you might be used to. Its as close to the real deal as youll get without driving to Auckland or better yet, going to China.
They were closed for 2 or so hours but the door was open & when I walked I she said kitchen staff were having there break until 5pm. I asked her why they didnt close the doors till then. There waa no answer to that. I think its a little silly having someone walk in for something thats not there. I just dont get why the doors were open at all.
Yum cha lunch was delish but the service was fabulous! The "mother" was cheeky as & her daughter came to have a chat. We then realised that they are from a neighbouring village from where my mom is from & mom had visited her village when she was young. When leaving, I spoke to daughter in my family language, she hugged me tight. Overwhelming moment for both of us!
Food is not too bad but, owner/manager is not friendly.
Good customer service and good kai (food). I always coming back here, when I visited Tauranga. I am from Hastings
Yummy food at decent prices. Queues arent usually long and ordering in store and waiting takes about 10 mins for 2 types of dumplings and 2 mains. You can pre order online using tuckerfox.
Excellent meal at a good price, the fish fillet congee was smooth and tasty plus the dumplings were very fresh, large and well packed with prawns
Best yum cha in tauranga. Chicken feet were delicious
Excellent food great variety one of the best and I have had a lot of yum cha.. The owner is a krak up... Added value to our dining experience... Worth the visit if in the Bay
Very yummy and lots of it for our group of two tables. All the food was delicious and the staff were all very busy and friendly. thank you 👍😊
First time customers ... WE WILL BE BACK. Easy online ordering (although we would like some pictures before making the decision), Order on time, pleasant reception ... and superb food.
Owners are a lovely friendly hardworking family. Great food doesnt take long to arrive (yum chago support local
Always good Chinese food at Eastern Ocean. I havent been back in a while now as in many years due to unwellness. Go along and dine find out whether you like the place and the food or not.
The absolute best authentic Chinese food! We have searched high and low for decent Chinese food in Tauranga and this is our number one favourite by far. Delicious food (the roast pork is to die forand fantastic, friendly service. Cant wait for our next visit!
The food was very disappointing. Just take this egg tar as example, the skin is soft and mushy. All other dished are equality bad and hopeless. DO NOT GO
extremely awesome traditional Chinese food! love the crispy roast duck and deep fried pork ribs. This is real chinese (Cantonese and Hongkong styledishes!Had dinner on anzac day, short stuff but the service is great. friendly and nice. very nice price!next time I would love to try the dimsum
Saw the reviews and went there with my family today with great expectations to celebrate my Birthday..Ordered Noodles and rice dishes and soup and 2 appetizers. The crackers and wontons were too oily... it was dripping on badly...The soup was inedible... absolutely disgusting.. felt like it was made from rotten tomatoes and stale chicken...The noodle was burnt and the rice was bland.ABSOLUTELY DISGUSTING....
I dont know where to start .Major things to improveCustomer service :- so loud noisy , no respect for customer, the counter lady just talk loudly cant explain anything properly. Rude attitudeFood:- specially asked for if you guys can make soup but spicy not sweet she said , yes they can make spicy without corn but once it came on table . It was like yuck 🤮 sweet full of corn . i left that soup in betweenHad order couples of more dishes(fish, beef, pork cant remember proper namewith my friend , even she didnt finish any dish because it didnt taste fresh at all.Our table wasnt cleaned properly , even utensils were like . Birds were flying throughLater on , guess what happened , Both of us , thrown up all night just because of that low quality food even though they charged us for quality food.I had tried chinese and thai food before but this made me regret to have lunch there. Not recommended at allThank you
Bought steamed pork dumplings, pork dim sum and bubble tea for takeaway. Pork was way too chewy so had to throw the dumplings and dim sum. The bubble tea tastes okayish and if you expecting bubble tea with tapioca pearls so a big no for that as they use some jelly bubble instead of tapioca.
Went for the first time tonight for our wedding anniversary and food was so good! Friendly staff very welcoming will definitely be back! Thanks for a great time.
Weve come here nearly every day during our stay in Tauranga, sampling quite a few lunch, dinner and dim sum dishes. Without exception, they were all authentic and very tasty. Were from NYC, and Eastern Ocean would definitely be able to hold its own in New Yorks Chinatown. Thats high praise, indeed. The service is great - the owner is exceptionally friendly, and seems to know all her regulars by name. Weve tried a number of other Chinese restaurants in Tauranga, and this is definitely the place to come for an authentic Chinese dining experience.
1st time at eastern ocean and absolutely loved it. The food was great. The lunch menu was great. Had some pork dumplings and pork and coriander dumplings, spicy pork and rice and spicy chicken and rice. Everything was amazing. Service too was great, quick and friendly staff.
Lunchtime Work Group get together, Eastern Ocean Chinese Restaurant on Devonport Road Tauranga was just the place for a Banquet lunch. Plenty of choices, the Chinese Duck tender and tasty. Friendly Staff.
Eastern ocean chinese restaurant. You get 3 stars because I love the lady that works in there. I buy the wonton soup because its not the best its even far from it but its the best Ive tasted in this town for the price. Sometime I order something new but never felt satisfied by it. I ordered chicken chowmein it was $16.90 and just horrible it was chicken fried noodle and very heavy in oil no juices at all and all up 4 bits of chicken Im very disappointed. And yes I couldve gone back and told them but this isnt the first time and going back to complain and embarrassing myself infront of a restaurant is something I want to make a habit of. I would avoid this place if I was you.
I ordered chicken and prawn fried rice online. The order was ready for pick up when I arrived. The food was lovely. My major complaint is that prawns were no where to be found in rice. So, basically I paid for chicken fried rice. I called the restaurant to let them know what happened. The woman behind the counter said sorry we are too busy right now but we will give you prawns next time. They were not busy at all. There was only a couple and a group of three at a table along with another couple paying for their meal. My partner called to complain as well and he was hung up on.This was my first and last time going to this restaurant. The least they could have done was told me to come back and get my prawns.
Especially, there is enough amount food for 3 with 2 and good taste. I ordered the food as the staff suggestd with expectation. That’s great. You can trust the staff. And the ambience is good and chrysanthemum tea.
Wow! Yum Cha. Great food. As good as Toronto, New York or Auckland. The last time I ate there it was so-so and slow service; however, new owners and a new cook in the last year have made this place my destination for Yum Cha in Tauranga. The surroundings were clean and tidy. Very friendly and really fast service. Great roast duck. The rest of the food looks pretty amazing too.
Bubble tea is so nice that I cannot stop drinking. I am gonna to order tomorrow too xoxo
The quantity of the food is good value for money. The quality is ok (only because this is the only yum Cha place left in Tauranga). The last few visit the tables were not set and had to get our own. The floors were not clean. Me been a regular customer the place seems to be going backwards as if there is no love anymore.
Unfortunately I’ll never go here again just due to one experience. We ordered some food but didn’t receive one dish. Our food came out in a random order so there’s no way to tell what’s coming when. At the end we decided just to pay as we had to leave. They tried to charge us for the dish and we explained we didn’t receive it. Then a lady behind the counter started yelling at us in I assume Mandarin. The person serving us was trying to mitigate it by talking back to the yelling lady and us at the same time. But it was very unpleasant. I don’t have any interest in lying to scam someone out of $5. Poor service and for that I wouldn’t go back.
Have been here a few times every time I go the food and service gets worse. This time the duck was luke warm there was no soy sauce or chilli sauce at the table. she was talking in her language to somebody across the restaurant while taking our order. One of the children was sitting in restaurant picking her nose then serving food to customers. Really healthy not.The chicken wings were drumsticks and looked like they just thrown on plate. It was more batter than chicken. The cloth she used for wiping down tables was filthy and there wasnt even any cleaning product sprayed on surface.I found the whole experience very bad.I wont be going back. NXT time I mite end up with selmonela or food poisoning. The place is dirty and very unwelcoming. Needs a good scrub and renovate.Needs proper staff not children that have no idea about health and safety issues.
I cant think of a single thing I like about this place. Went here for yum cha and they do Al a carte style. Because of this, I was cautious and only ordered 4 things, bbq wrapped in noodles, siu mai, and two prawn dumplings. The siu mai was raw on the inside. Not like slightly raw but half of it. The kind that would make people sick. Waitress didnt even acknowledge anything was wrong, just took it away.Dumplings had ok flavour but the outside tasted tough like the dumplings had been reheated. The bbq noodles were average. The sauce was OK but the meat was low quality and the noodles were not soft like they should be.Other reviews talked about dirty floors but to me having sparrows inside while I was eating was worse.Avoid this place.
We ordered roast duck and noodles for lunch. There was a dead fly stuck in the middle of the green veggies. The host didnt really care and charged us the full price just minus the vaggie price which was only couple of dollars. I felt so gross from almost finishing the soup but more gross from their hospitality attitude. Dont eat here. The hygiene of this place is really bad.
Been there for some takeaways several times, portion is pretty big compared to the price. (I got Mapo Tofu for like only 9 bucks and I feel full by eating half of it, comes with rice!Cant say its the best Chinese food in town as I havent been to other ones, but definitely satisfied by just that.Service was good, menu has all kinds of varieties, a bit concerned about birds flying in the restaurant hope theyll get rid of them for hygienic sake.Feel hungry by just reminding their food...😣
I’ve had the worst experience here. When I questioned when a dish doesn’t taste right (fried tofu became burnt tofu, should b crispy on the outside n soft on the insidenot only I received no feedback from the staff they deny the fact they over cooked the dish. When my wife confronted the owner again for feedback she insist no liability and hints that we are no longer welcomed and they do not need businesses from non-locals. I’m appalled by her comments and as they have simply neglected the power of food reviews. Food for thought: if u cannot take on feedbacks you’ll never improve.
Don’t be discouraged by the mixed reviews for this place, I work in the CBD and I frequently dine here. Sister (one of the workersis very helpful as I am in a wheelchair. The food is good and value for money. The only down is the table height as I have to lower my power wheelchair all the way down in order to get under the table.
We were unsure whether to come here based on mixed reviews, but had a great experience. Great value for money, delicious food which mostly seemed fresh or cooked just for us (as opposed to reheated). Service was a bit casually, but was attentive to any requests (water/condiments). Unlike other yum cha places, you order from a menu as opposed to selecting off carts.
The first visit was fine. But the succeeding visits were a little below average as ingredients used were not fresh. Also the food was prepared before the order and just seemed to be microwaved. It was fast but not good food. Inconsistent customer service quality. In some days, you can be well-attended; in some days, you could self-cater the drinks, plate, utensils, sauces. Perhaps the customer service depends on the mood of the staff/owner.
Have been a handful of times. Not a fancy restaurant but the food is ok for the price. Quite cheap considering. Staff were friendly & there is a variety available. We took our family of 5 (3 young children& it only cost us $42 total for yum cha shared dinner. We had planned to go to Gengys but at $32 per adult we decided against it. This was a nice alternative
Always welcoming fast service. Good selection of dishes to order with nice duck.
Customer service was slow, wasnt overly busy but we waited around 10mins to get our order taken. I noticed a group that came in after us got waited on first. I ended up going up to the counter to order. We got the duck, the seasonal vegetables(pre-cooked and put in the microwave), baked pork dumplings(only had 2 left so asked if we wanted something else which were burnt), spring rolls(3 very small ones for $5), and prawn dumplings(the best things we ordered). Just about at the end of our meal another couple sat behind us but ended up waiting too long to be served so walked out. When I went to pay she overcharged us $5(not the first time thats happened). Wont be gping back there
Interesting experience... over charged and then ‘forgot’ a meal. Some food ok, other dishes very average. Pork steamed buns weren’t steamed and were served cold... and don’t get the deep fried scallops...who knows what those were. Ambience was added to by Chinese kids running round and round the tables playing tag with fly swots... would not go back
If there are Asian customers who sit down after you and youre Caucasian, their orders get taken first. The food is okay but I think 88 Devonport is much better in all aspects.Tonight we ordered 5 dishes and were waiting for the BBQ duck for a while once we had finished the other ones when we decided to ask if it was coming because otherwise we had to leave. The staff asked each other about it and the older lady behind the counter said that it had already been served to us, she served it to us as the first dish, which she hadnt. We said no we never got it as we discussed each dish and would have remembered. She started yelling in Chinese from behind the counter and the younger staff member essentially had to tell her to shush multiple times to try to get her to stop yelling at us and said we wouldnt have to pay for it. But clearly the older lady was yelling about us and claiming we were wrong. My partner got a death stare from her when we went to pay. Some other customers around us were loudly snorting every 30 seconds and eating with their mouths open, unpleasant.
We are from Malaysia and the dishes match well with our expectations! The taste was nice! Even our friends from Hong Kong also love to eat here!
Well services and majority of the foods are delicious without caused of MSG due to wont feel thirsty after meal. Price are reasonable. I and my buddies almost dine in once a week :highly recommend their Roast Peking Duck! But this dishes will take some time to serve as it lot of steps we believe :)
