Noted collection of Greek & international contemporary art housed in a sleek-design former brewery.
Very quiet out of season but lots to see and a lovely building with great views across the city too. Very welcoming. Happy for me to photograph the building and the exhibits which is always good.
Wonderful place in Athens. Amazing exhibitions.
Its a great place with very interesting exhibits. The ticket is at 8 Euros and you will need at least 3 hours to see everything.
This modern art museum emphasizes more on art pieces whose concept is stashed in the explanatory tablets and texts, with very few artpieces that had layers of visual or audiovisual excellence. The spaces of the building are nice, so as the museum cafe.
Do not go here for the art. Three stars? The coffee and the nice staff. Zero for the art. Deceptive naming: this is not an art museum, it is a collection of responses to some of the terrible events in history. It is a hard and sad experience. We found ourselves hoping for presentations of how to go forward; we did not see any. Perhaps we missed that.
This new contemporary gallery is in a schmick refit of an old brewery. Wonderful gallery space in an emerging part of town. The group show Statecraft (and beyond) was powerful look at global issues. Very international with one Australian artist included. I was moved. I wish this show would come to Melbourne! Thanks.
It would have made for a better experience if all of the art placards were printed and hung on the wall. Instead, all the art had QR Codes the visitor could scan for more information. Internet coverage at the museum was spotty and the free wifi was so slow none of the pages actually loaded, which made for an irritating experience. Modern art really suffers without the added context provided by the curator/artist notes. It does the art a disservice to not easily and seamlessly provide that information to visitors. Otherwise, the building was gorgeous, the cafe well-appointed and the views from the roof deck were worth the trek up all the escalators.
A beautifully designed contemporary museum where one can enjoy international and local artists in relevant dialogue. Must visit when in Athens. Great view of the Parthenon from top floor.
I loved this museum! I went with zero expectations! I went there after a long art trip in Firenze so I was already full with beautiful impressions, but the exhibition was great! I loved a few peaces that still inspires me with my work, and almost every day I think about some of them! 💐🥳🏙
The museum is nice in that it displays the complete and utter bankruptcy of contemporary / modern art.If you are looking for beautiful things you will not find them here.If you want to research the state of western society - more specifically its art community-, there is some interesting research material here.
Great place displaying some excellent art - politically and socially pertinent - all incredibly fascinating!
This is a great museum! It’s a beautiful (and massivespace and thoughtfully curated. It’s an oasis away from the crowds and noises. I spent almost 4 hrs there and didn’t manage to see everything before it closed. It does have a strong social and political focus.
Fantastic museum! Well-curated permanent collection centered around geo-politics. I was impressed by the quality of the art and the museum craft.Tips - Right off of a main metro stop, so its very easy to get to. However, the Uber app is a cheap/efficient way to get here via taxi if youre a little bit farther away.
I visited the state force exhibition. It did open many New Vision for me and asked many questions I will have to think about. I have to say it is a little bit depressing, but your milage May vary. The Museum itself is a good cocoon for such exhibition but I guess thats what it was built for.
The building itself is really cool, especially the rooftop you can see acropolis. However the collections are not so interesting, most of them lack of explanation and I cant understand the meaning. There are too many video/audio-playing artworks, felt overwhelmed, plus they are placed closely to each other so I could hear 2-3 audios at the same time. Despite the museum isnt that impressive, its rare to find art museum and see such new renovated modern building in Greece so I give it a 3 stars.
Beautiful modern interior architecture design. There are four floors of exhibits. Thursdays are open til 21:45, rest of the week closes 18:45. Take your time to go through and spend as little or as much time on any of their exhibits. The cafe inside the museum only offers drinks.
The building is quite industrial and suits the purpose of contemporary arts museum nicely. The collection is impressive and staff is nice and welcoming. I enjoyed my visit so much and some pieces are stunning. The ary display is way more conceptual than I thought it would be but I loved it. Big thumbs up!
The museum was a total waste of time, there were no descriptions on the exhibits and the only way to get information about them was through an app that worked with qr codes (not all the exhibits had qr), because of this a lot of times you couldnt understand what you saw. Maybe the displays this particular time was not so good, but I surely wont visit the museum again and I dont recommend it. Nevertheless the view form the roof was half decent but it does not worth the 8 euros that you pay in the entrance. Better visit the national gallery as an alternative.
Amazing museum with very interesting artworks, you really get “lost” in there in a good way and receive a lot of inspiration and ideas 10/10
A huge museum on 7 levels all together. I saw an interesting temporary exhibition Statecraft presenting different social techniques of creating and then managing detached societes and nations. The permanent exhibitions were less vibrant, but worth a visit. You need at least 3 hours to see all with a minimum of thinking and understanding.
Truly amazing museum. I loved it. So well made and informative and vibrant
Happy to get know more about Greek Art in the National Gallery. I was missing benches in the halls.Coffee in the restaurant was extremely expensive.
Great building. Great views. Really enjoyed half the exhibits but found the other half really depressing. All a question of taste however. Its an Art Gallery, not everyone is going to love everything. In general its definitely worth a visit.
A must see Athens attraction. Besides the exhibitions the building itself is a brilliant example of how an industrial building (brewerywas transformed to museum.
World-class museum with a diverse mix of Greek and international artists. The themes are very political and sociological, which makes it even more interesting since you can learn about the history and politics of many countries. The building is very modern and easy to navigate, and there’s a rooftop with a beautiful view of the Acropolis. The staff was very sweet and helpful.
A great museum to visit, especially the short film called The women without men which moved me a lot…,
we must be aware of the risks of visiting modern art installations. Stunning views from panoramic windows and an impressive view of eternal values - Pnyx Hill, Acropolis, Lycabettus
I have been to the museum three times and it never disappoints. It is a beautiful and modern building below the Acropolis. You can have something to eat or drink inside. It is a little more expensive but where can you eat looking at the magnificent Parthenon?
Beautiful haven with thoughtful permanent collection and temporary exhibits. We particularly enjoyed exchanging with and participating in Jennifer Nelson’s work - an excellent and illuminating commentary on today’s throwaway culture and development ta impact on our environment, health and society
Nice exhibitions of contemporary artists with various applied materials. Definitely overshadowed by the famous historic sites in Athens.
Great exhibition and art. Just expect staff to follow you around and stare you down the entire time. Was a but awkward. Would still come back :)
This museum is a real discovery. We came with no big expectations and stayed nearly 4 hours in this wonderfully curated space. It is refreshingly different from the usual modern art Museum where are you see the ever same artists and types of art. It is certainly political art, it makes you think, and you will remember several pieces of art in a years from now. This is more than you can ask for in most of the modern art museums. Great views from the terrace too!
The museum is not worth the trip. If interested in looking at “art” that doesn’t require a modicum of talent to produce, such as a 30’ piece of rope with a neon light strip attached to it or a video of a man chanting from various angles, this museum may be for you. Otherwise, the only things of interest at the museum are the building itself, clean bathrooms and air conditioning.
Beautiful architecture and I loved their collection. Spend two hours here but Im a fan of contemporary art. Visited the museum knowing it was going to be a very hot day outside.
Contemporary art with a special focus on political issues around the world, particularly nationalism. I enjoyed the beauty of the building with an excellent view of Acropolis and the high quality of artists.Art makes us human.P.S. The rooftop needs to be organized to let people sit a little bit. There is an art piece on the roof but as this area is deserted, nobody can see it.
Very good contemporary art museum in a really spacious modern building. I personally found the exhibitions a bit disjointed and frankly depressing, however that might be a reflection of the formation of the collection during a time of turmoil in Greece.I mentioned the sadness to the information desk and while enjoying a coffee in the excellent cafe was visited by one of the staff architects who explained the transfer of the exhibition to this modern museum had left gaps in the narrative .Great service from a staff that cares and worth a visit. I look forward to a future visit and see how they have fully utilised the building.
Most of them I don’t understand and some of them are perplexing…but it’s contemporary art, right? I still enjoyed the whole vibe of the museum very much. 😌
Great museum space with some really interesting and thought provoking pieces. I loved the political and social artworks. I recommend downloading the museum app and using it to get more information on certain works. Its easy to use. There is a security checkpoint at the entrance. I spent almost 3 hours in the museum.
Huge place with 6 floors to walk around, great rooftop with cool view to chill and take photos at. And very convenient location at city centre. Liked the art selections, was cool to see very different collections. The building seems to be very new and it feels comfortable inside. We got tired of walking in 1 hour but there was more to see
Probably the most well presented & curated art museum in Greece. Great selection of Eastern Med art with a focus on social issues. A must see!
It is an amazing space! Great ongoing exhibitions, happy and informative staff, nice gift shop and very clean WC! We spent a good 3 hours with my 6 year old and It was such an nice experience!
Definitely one of the top museums in Athens! Perfect for contemporary art lovers. Great interiors, loads of exhibits and cool periodical exhibitions. Must visit!
4 floors full of art pieces and installations. due to restrictions rooftop was inaccessible but that is understandable. From all the contemporary art museums I’ve been, this is the least diverse - I have seen endless artworks specifically on Parthenon, although everything was well curated. Just needs a bit more diversity. What impressed me the most on their permanent collection was the architecture pieces / sketches / concept / extracts, so highly recommend if you’re a fan.
Beautiful building full on interesting pieces. My favourite part was in the basement level, but all in all I liked the experience. They check the temperature before entering just to make sure that you are not sick, which made me feel even more safe even though everyone was wearing masks.
The building is fab and the contemporary artwork is varied and interesting. Its defiantly worth visiting.€8 entry. The only negatives are that the staff are rather sturn and seem to almost follow you around when a room is empty. Also, there is no description for the artworks apart from the name of the artist and what its made out of and the title which is a real shame. There is an app called Smartify which they encourage you to download. It only gives you selected artworks though and they are not in order of room so its a minefield and didnt work for me.Tate Modern in London has a new system where you scan the QR code on entry to the exhibition and then you tap the name of the artwork onto your phone and you hear a description of it - seamless, modern and informative.
Worth a visit; however, the curation of the space needs some work. It honestly hindered my experience in the museum.Only a small handful of the works have descriptions or artist statements. This meant that most works lack context, translations and explanations. You can download an app and scan paintings to learn more about the work; however, the descriptions were not helpful at all- just copy pasted bios about the artist. Rarely did it have any information about the actual artwork you were wanting to know more about.Their COVID safety is great though! They temperature check everyone on arrival, require masks, and limit the number of visitors in certain spaces.
It is a new museum housed in a former Fix brewery. The building is quite nicely renovated and spacious. The museum itself is close to the more popular Acropolis museum and central Athens. I quite liked the permanent exhibitions and in particular the video rooms. The adult entry price is 8 euro which is a fair price for the art on display. A bit disappointed with the shop which in my opinion could have provided more choice and the closure of the onsite coffee shop however the later is probably due to COVID-19. Overall would recommend for modern art aficionados and people wanting to look at more than ancient rocks and statues.
Truth is that the building is really impressive and functional as well as humongous. On the contrary, the exhibits didnt really give me the thrills. It reminded me a lot of the Tate museum (interesting view on the rooftop, many levels, weird modern art, inarticulate video projections). I only speak from my point of view and surely I am no art critic, but I would rather prefer to actually witness profound pieces. Since it is the very first month of its reopening, I am hoping more listings will be added.
Its brand new. It has been long awaited. It is quite impressive. Another jewel has been added to leoforos Sygrou. It is certainly the most hype avenue of Athens. The National Museum has opened up its doors and is quite impressive. There are of course mistakes and the collections are not covering all the Greek artists, but it is an impressive start. Please visit and enjoy.
One of the best designed museums. Located in a historic building, the first beer factory in Greece, host modern art exhibitions. Also a large number of artworks from documenta 14 was presented here. The access in the museum is very easy as a metro and bus station is nearby.Do not hesitate to visit the top floor of the museum where there is a fantastic view of the Acropolis.
