Remains of a 20,000-seat 2nd-century CE Roman amphitheater built by Emperor Trajan.
A historical amphitheater where they used to have gladiators and slaves fight the soldiers for entertainment
Quite a letdown. Its not well maintained from the inside.
It is just strange that you have such historical thing in the heart of the city but you dont value it. I mean, one meter from the amphitheatre are buildings, which is unacceptable. They didnt finish discovering the whole place, for visitors there is not much to see, but it is still better to enter than to see above from the gates. They should invest into preservation of the while monument.
very nice ticket seller man. you can only pay in cash. 300lek / person
Costs around 2.5 euro per person to get in. An interesting sight to see but nothing too special. Its cool to go inside and see the steps
I really liked this place, but sadly there is more that can be done for it. The reconstruction is not completed and Im not sure if it will ever be in the near future.
Nice place to visit
Access all areas and climb into tunnels and ruins... You can go back in time. Small tour to get around but a must see and inexpensive while in Durres.
This place upsets me: little to no investment into this historically important site but even more depressing it is to see all the newly built "shacks" or so-called "houses" which were built right ON THE WALLS OF THE COLOSSEUM!Shame on the local authorities!
Nice place to visit on the way to the Coast, however IT was under some maintance and we werent able to takę closer look
If you are not in Durres for other reasons, not really worth of changing your route in order to visit it, as we did. It is not particularly well preserved, nor picturesque, nor is much information about it provided at site.
Not well preserved, no indications, and with garbage inside. I wonder what the Romans would think if they saw such an historical ruin kept in that way
I loved the area, the sun was very hot but nice places for pictures and shops and restaurants around. Very lively and bubbly place
A nice experience if you are in Durres.Went here with a couple of friends and we all found it interesting. It said it closed at 18.00 but we were allowed to go in after that time. Paid 300LEK per person. The place also had a tomb inside one of the many tunnels under the amphitheatre. I missed some signs around the area to tell you more facts and history about the place.
We arrived a little after 9, the place was still closed, but a few seconds after we arrived, a gentleman came and opened for us, we paid and started our visit... I could just imagine that amphitheatre packed with the crowds cheering for their favourite gladiator. A pice of history uncovered, showing even the early history of Christianity present in the place, when a part of the amphitheatre was transformed into a church.
Great archaeological spot, unfortunatelly not presented in a right way. Surrounded with buildings, but worth to be seen...
You can see all ruins from street, it is quite dirty which is pity. Plastic bottles, tobocco butts etc. Seems that it is not renovated well and it is not cared well.
Nice day out with family. Plenty to see if you like archaeological sites and ruins, it is a long walk around with some uneven ground where it is difficult to walk. Make sure to wear comfortable shoes for climbing. Lots of shaded areas yo stop and restThe coffee shop is very overpriced but comes in handy for cold refreshments after the big walk. We went on Saturday and there was no parking available it is better to catch a bus if you can. Lots of people around but the place is huge so it doesnt feel over crowded. Expect to pay an entrance fee 1000 LK per adult and 500 for a child over 12
Really exciting place, very ancient and interesting
So much history this place has to offer! This amphitheater is the only one in Albania and its the second one for its capacity in the Balkan! The worst thing about it is that the Government and the City members dont do any investment in it for 100 different reasons. So sad for our city touristic future.
Under renovation.. Not v pleasant or interesting to be there among so much rubble.. Will be a decent attraction once the renovations complete.. Liked the only mosaic in the cages or maybe office
Beautiful, but we couldn’t find the entrance so we just looked over the fence. Great view of so much history
The amphitheater is run down but definitely worth a visit. The mosaics are lovely. The archeological museum 400 met away is brilliant. Try not to stay in the town of Durres, it’s horrid
So happy to see they are restoring the castle for the 14th century and so tiny wing to maintain the amphitheatre. We have been coming here for years and the feeling is the same. History at its best!
This is our second time coming here in five years. There is a 2000 year old story written and lived in these walls. It definitely needs a lot of work to preserve it and make it more interesting, because this amphitheater is a treasure that needs to be known by everyone. We still enjoyed it. My 9 year young daughter was very excited to visit this gem and she loved it.
Neat old site. Near to many of the other main attractions.
The ruins of the Roman amphitheater are in the middle of the center of Durrës and would be hard to miss if youre looking for whatever little remains of the ancient part of the city. You might be tempted not pay the admission price because most of the ruins are visible from the streets that surround it. But if youre a lover of archaeology and you want to get a closer look at the location of gladiator fights in a Roman province, a stroll inside is essential. You might have to do a little bit of careful climbing, but its part of the adventure. Well worth the detour.
Nice to see from the outside, but not very well preserved. We decided not to spend too much time on it.
A Most see - 2nd century roman 20000 stadium. Only discovered in 1966
The city of Durrës have a Roman amphitheatre in the center of the city.Construction began under the emperor Trajan in the 2nd century AD and it wadetroyed twicw by earthquakes in the 6th and 10th centuries.Remains one of the most beautiful majestic of th ancient world and one of ten most beautiful Roma amphitheatre!
Albania is a wonderful place for ancient sites lovers. I found this site randomly and I suddenly have an emotional state because with time passing, we see fewer theatres and cultural events, we see fewer modern sites for art and exhibition.I hope one day we reflect on the the past and build a strong future.
The Roman Amphitheater of Durrës was built under emperor Trajan in 2nd century and was destroyed twice by earthquakes in the 6th and 10th centuries. It is still preserved very well, considering everything. Its capacity was estimated from 15000 to 18000 spectators. It was discovered in 1966 and it is a place you must see while visiting the city.
Great place to visit but poor service.I went there the last Sunday of October. The last Sunday of each month you can visit all the historical museums and parks without paying if you are Albanian. But the lady who worked there didnt let me to go in,because she told me that I have to pay.I went to the Archeological museum too, and there I could visit the place without paying. The law is not the same 😉🤔
What a great spot to see and feel history, the admission price of 400 leks for two of us is very reasonable. There is no guided tour here, you just walk around by yourself and its perfect!!! You walk out on the field in the middle as well.Theres also a really cool mosaic in one the rooms.
Amphitheater is always the part of the history and and the place where you feel it in full. Amphietater in Durrës much less interesting than in the other places where Ive been. But, if you roam around it, you will find really interesting places.
The amphitheater was built in the 2nd century and began to be excavated in the last century. Very memorable place. It was also able to accommodate 20,000 people!
Amphitheater of Durress monumental piece of architecture art and balkan history. Im almost feel like time travel back to II Century. Very pleasure place for history lover! Worth 300 leke/person for everyone
If u have visited Rome, Verona, El Jem or any other good looking amphitheatre and you are not really interested in the story of the bricks development of the construction this place will not impress you.But if this is the first chance for u to be closer to the history and possibility to literally touch it than probably you should go there. Anyhow the entrance fee is around 2€ so if you have a free hour or two you can spend it there. The area is well maintained and clean, also some beautifications are in progress.
Big amphitheater. A lot of work is going on and already possible to get a good idea of the sheer size of it.
Although you can pay the admission fee to go inside, there is also a small walkway around the perimeter of the amphitheater that allows you to see inside.
Absolutely worth going at least once in your life. Walking through the galleries and stopping to take it all in, knowing you are standing on the stairs where gladiators prepared before going on the arena to fight for their lives. The center of the amphitheatre has not been escavated because it was used as burial grounds, which is still fascinating to know. There is still much to be discovered, the current galleries would not take particularly long to explore either. Bring a bright flashlight as there are a couple of galleries that are longer and very dark.
Slightly underwhelming spot. While the entrance fee of 200 Lek was not a lot, we visited other places that charged the same for more.*Edit* after visiting the rest of Albania, this really isn’t worth your time or money. There are far better places to visit.
Nice place to visit if you are in Durres, because it is downtown. However a bit neglected and not properly marked and maintained.I would not pay to get.in, you can see all from outside.
The Amphitheatre of Durrës is an amphitheatre in the centre of the city. The construction began under the emperor Trajan in the 2nd century AD and destroyed twice by earthquakes in the 6th and 10th centuries. It is the largest amphitheatre ever built in the Balkans with once having a capacity of 20,000 people. Inside of amphitheatre was built a church with the only vertical mozaic, the unic one in Albania.

Ancient amphitheatre to rival anything outaide of Rome. Just 200 Leke for adults to enter, free for kids under 12. Middle of the city. Slightly rundown and not much info posted. But you can explore everywhere. Assume 20minutes to an hour to explore thoroughly.
I love ancient Amphitheatres and this one is in quite decent condition! It costs just 200leks to get in. Compared to other Amphitheatres (in Italy, France), they could do more in terms of signage to educate on the history, but at least they’re treating it like a historical museum. It’s technically still being excavated as it wasn’t discovered until just 1966
Great place to visit in Durres. This is where you feel how old Durres actually is. A must see. Entrance fee is 200 lek, totally worth it.
The site is beautiful, but it would benefit a guidance of any kind. The people visiting are helped to understand the greatness of the location only by their own imagination.
It looks much better in pictures than in real life. Expect to pay around 4 euros to enter it. Go watch it if you have nothing else to do or you extremelly into archeology.
