Well maintained historical monument of Chalukyan era..
Aihole Durga temple dates back to the 8th century and is a fine example of Chalukyan architecture. Unlike other temples, it has an apsidal plan. Multiple sculptures adorn the walls and ceilings. The temple is a real beauty in red sandstone.Note: Temple is dedicated to Surya but named Durga (a misnomerdue to the fact that there was a lookout built on top of it once making it fort like (Durg)

That’s how far ahead we have to go to be at same place how far behind we have to go

One of the best and biggest temple complex in Aihole. It’s also considered as experimental place for building temples by Chalukya kingdom. This complex consists of at least 8 temples which are built at different time , most of them were built after 6 th century, of which Durga temple is biggest one which was dedicated not to Durga but sun god as per archeological survey of India. These temples are very charming and beautiful . If you are fond of ancient architecture this place is heaven, timings are from morning 7 am to 6 pm. Near by this complex there are 8 more complexes to be explored belongs to same period .people often visit only this complex when they come to Aihole .A full day is required to visit all 8 complexes .Aihole is 35 km from Badami which can be reached by either once own vehicle or by bus which you can catch from Badami in early morning around 7 am.
Aihole temple complex is a group of temples built over the years during Chalukya dynasty. Most of the structures are very much intact and well preserved. This place is not as crowded as Hampi or Badami, so you can enjoy those taking your own time.
Opens at 6AM and thats the best time to see Sun Temple!
Must visit place if you are visiting Hampi. It is little far from Hampi, may 3-4hrs ride. This place is architectural wonder
Central attraction in Aihole - it is a “Durg” ( near a forttemple and does not have Durga as the main deity ( hence a misnomer ). It is situated about 45 mins from Badami. There is parking alongside the entrance and free ( for now . There is an entrance fee ( cheaper if you book online )Excellent complex of temples and reasonably well maintained . Get in early ( place opens at sun riseto avoid crowds , to get good pictures . Visited in Dec 2021. There are a few small eateries around but surprisingly none were open even at 10 am . The tender coconut and fruit sellers were the saviours . Can be combined with Pattadakal as a half day trip from Badami ( either early morning or post lunch - to beat the heat )
The Durga temple is an early eighth century Hindu Temple located in aihole. Nice stone carvings. Ambience also very good. Very well maintained temple and greenery as well. One of the best place to visit in Badami
Such a beautifully maintained historic group of monuments. Heaven to eyes of people who like architecture and carvings. Im lost for words to describe such beautiful place. Even after such a beatings and loot out from worst of empires that existed, it still stands to be mesmerized. Pattadakallu and aihole temples are the best.
This is the cardinal monument in Aihole, The Durga Temple. For solo travelers you need travel by city bus from Badami to Aihole or hire an auto which could be slightly expensive. Coming to the monuments, it’s absolutely wonderful , mostly ruined but still beautiful to look around. There on the spot guides whom you can hire and get to know the history in detail. I spotted cranes, mongoose, and an owl while here. Aihole must be a spot you need to visit when you’re in Badami.
This is the university of temple making. In the olden days rock cutters learned the art of converting rocks into emotions.
Beautiful architecture of 8th century. Durga temple is an early 8th-century Hindu temple located in Aihole, Karnataka, India. Originally dedicated to Surya, it has the most embellished and largest relief panels in Aihole depicting artwork of Shaivism, Vaishnavism, Shaktism and Vedic deities. Apart from its fine carvings, it is notable for its apsidal plan – a rare example among early Chalukyan Hindu temple architecture
During our family tour to ‘Magical Hampi’ in Karnataka, while returning to home, on route we gave a visit to the ‘Durga Temple’ in Aihole. It is located at around 36 Km away from Badami and about 15 Km away from Pattadakal. Durga Temple is a Hindu temple which is of medieval age. Durga Temple is not used for regular worship. In reality, there is no idol of Goddess Durga in this temple, and neither Durga is worshiped. But it is dedicated to Vishnu.Durga Temple is related to the Chalukya period. On the entrance of the temple, there are two stairs which reach the porch of the temple. The walls and pillars of the porch are decorated with statues of the Hindu Goddesses. Statues of various Hindu deities are kept on the walls of the temple. Due to which the temple looks very beautiful and amazing. It is open from 9 AM to 6 PM and the entry tickets is Rs.10/- per person for Indians. It is a must visit place during your trip to Badami.
Durga temple is the main attraction of Aihole. This temple is UNESCO world heritage.
Aihole is a historic site along the Malaprabha river valley in North Karnataka housing over 120 temple structures built in 4th century AD. Aihole is a delight to visit for those who love archaeology, ancient temples and history. The most noteworthy among them is the Durga Temple composed of a semicircular apse, an elevated plinth and a gallery encircling the sanctum. The Lad Khan Temple is one of the earliest temples in the region and was initially a royal assembly hall and marriage mantapa. It was the chosen abode of the Muslim chief Lad Khan.Durga Temple: Durga Temple is the primary attraction in Aihole and most spectacular representations of Aihole Temples. Durga Temple complex houses an archaeological museum and art gallery.Lad khan Temple showcases iconography from Shaiva, Vaishnava and Shakti traditions of Hinduism.
The Durga temple is the best known Aihole temples. It has a misleading name, because the temple is not named after goddess Durga. The structure stands near the ruins of a fort-like enclosure or durg. It is dedicated to Hindu gods Surya and Vishnu. Sansad bhavan in Delhi has some resemblance with Durg Temple. The Lad Khan Temple is near the Durga temple. The temple is named after the Muslim commander. The temple embeds three concentric squares. It is supported by a set of 12 intricately carved pillars. The wall has floral designs. The temple inside is lit with natural sunlight coming in from lattice windows of the north Indian style.
Durga Temple is the main attraction in Aihole and the most spectacular representations of Aihole Temples. This temple is part of the UNESCO World Heritage. There is no idol of Goddess Durga in this Durga temple, and neither Durga is worshipped. This is a fort named Durga, Durga means the protector or the fort here.It does feature a Durga sculpture but is dedicated mainly to both Lord Vishnu and Lord Shiva, equal representatives of the holy trinity of Hinduism, along with Lord Brahma. Numerous images of Shiva and Vishnu can be found in the temple and it is a brilliant tribute to the religious and spiritual life of Karnataka. The shape of the temple in Indian traditional architecture is known as Gajaprasta, which means equal to the back of an elephants. The construction of the temple is suggestive of Indian traditional architecture in the Dravida and Nagara styles, and its unusual shape is reminiscent of the early Buddhist style of building.
It was in small village named Aihole. Good place to visit once as it has surrounded with other temples as well. Theres a museum at the right side similar to Badami museum.
Located in Aihole group of temples, Durga temple is confused with दुर्गा (Goddesswhile it is दुर्ग (Fortress or किला). Confusion is due to English spelling only. However, one दुर्गा idol does exist in the temple though it is dedicated to Shiva and Vishnu with almost equal number of depictions.Whether you are in interested in photography or in ancient architecture or just lazy traveller set out to explore wonderful places on earth, this is worth visiting. You may spend hour(sexploring the beautiful architecture, intricate carvings or beautiful depiction of Hindu gods. UNESCO World Heritage Site with unique round ended temple. Must compliment Archaeological Survey of India for great upkeep of well manicured lawns and even for the restoration and maintenance of the buildings and museum.Limited facilities and limited options for water/ Snacks etc. Several stalls with local seasonal fruits atvthe entrance. If you are paranoid about the quality, bring yourself but please do not litter inside the beautiful heritage of India.
The Durga Temple is the iconic and best known temple among the more than 100 temples in the remote village of Aihole in North Karnataka. You may think that it gets its name from Goddess Durga, but this is not the case; it is called so because of its proximity to the ruins of a fort like enclosure or Durg (Fort). It was built during the reign of King Vikramaditya II in the late 6th to early 8th century CE.We visited Aihole in February 2018. We drove 35 km from Badami to Aihole via Pattadakal. The last stretch of the road from Pattadakal to Aihole, about 12 km was in a very bad shape, and overnight rain (in Februaryhad made it even more difficult to navigate. Still, the majesty and grandeur of the monuments and temple, in such a remote village, made it worth the while. The temple is located in an enclosure also known as the Durga Temple Complex. There is a parking lot outside. We had to pay Rs.30 per head as entry fee. The Complex is very well looked after by the ASI; there were very neatly laid out lawns, washroom and drinking water coolers near the Museum and Art Gallery. There are some more temples in the complex, but the Durga Temple, with its apsidal layout and exquisite design overshadowed them all. The temple is built on a raised platform, with a colonnaded corridor running around it. We saw beautiful life size carvings of Shiva, Vishnu in his various avatars, Harihara (half Shiva, half Vishnu), Goddess Durga slaying the buffalo demon, goddesses Ganga and Yamuna, and many friezes depicting episodes from the Ramayana and Mahabharata. There were also smaller friezes depicting the scenes from daily life and amorous couples in various stages of courtship. The general condition of the sculptures was good, though some had been damaged or defaced. One can easily spend an hour or two just admiring the mastery of the temple artisans. Guides can be hired at the entrance gates, if you have not already studied about it before coming here. Thankfully there were no charges for using a still camera and I took quite a number of photos of the sculptures and friezes. We had to tear ourselves away as there was much more to see in Aihole.
Aihole Durga temple is managed by the UNESCO world heritage. Situated In the Bagalkot district this center is easily accessible through the National high way. The architecture is from the Chalukya dynasty dating back to the 6th century. The details of carvings creates then is something that we need to admire about.Would say a well maintained heritage place, and a must visit place once in a life time.

Well maintained garden, stone carved monument make it best place. If you like to visit temples then do plan this temple on this route.
Aihole occupies a unique place in the history of temple architecture in India. It was the experimenting ground for the early chalukyan Kings. This place is almost 35km from Badami. We booked an auto-rickshaw for aihole pattadakal trip which cost us 1000 bucks. Buses are also available from badami. There is a museum inside the complex which is very informative and helpful. Outside of the main temple complex there are few temples scattered within 400-500m. A must visit place for history and art lover.

Durga Temple complex in Aihole is situated on the banks of river Malaprabha in Bagalkot district of Karnataka. It is an old small village amid vast agriculture fields. It is 33 km from Badami, nearly 500 km from Bangalore & 140 km from Hampi. Nearby roads are not in good condition. Carry food basket as there are no restaurants nearby. This sleepy little place has seen better days during Badami Chalukyas times who ruled from the year 540 to 753 AD. It was in fact a capital town & a trading center in their initial days before Pulkesi II shifted the capital to Badami 33 km away.A local mythological legend says that Saint Parshurama avenged his fathers death by killing the giant Ilavala brother of demon Vatapi here hence the name Ilavalapura. These temples have been divided by Archaeological Survey of India (ASIin 22 groups based on architectural styles & age.It is also said that correct name is Doorg Temple that is Fort Temple.
Aihole is popularly known as Land Of Monuments. The Experimentation of architecture started from Aihole. Around 130 temples exist here and they are totally different from one another either in the matter of Temple style, architecture etc. This place seems to be less secure as the guards dont even enter the visit area and will be at the entrance gates.Aihole has Hindu temples , Jain temples and Buddhist temple.
Its an UNESCO world heritage site. There are a lot of temples within the premises. The lawn in very well maintained and looks very cool. The area around the monument, the entire site is very underdeveloped. The availability of butter milk outside the gate is a welcoming sign, if you visit in summer. There is river, which you can enter within the premises. Also maintained by central organization so its very well taken care of. It shows the great architecture of chalukyas ... A true jem in Karnataka history and architecture.

Durga temple is the main temple of this complex. Its named after the nearby Durg (fortand not after goddess durga. Shape of the temple is known as Gajprastha, back of elephant. We saw beautiful carvings of Shiva, Vishnu, Harihara, Ganga, Yamuna, Goddess Durga. Many episode of Mahabharata are depicted on walls and ceiling of temple which are very beautiful.

The Ancient Durg Temple was dedicated to Lord Shiva. The Durga temple is located in Aihole in the state of Karnataka, India. The temple was built between the 7th and the 8th century by the dynasty of the Chalukyas. The architecture of the temple is predominantly Dravida with Nagara style also is used in certain areas. The Durga Temple is considered a unique and magnificent temple of the Chalukyan period. The origin of the name is not the Durga goddess, but a fortress, maybe an enclosure which surrounded the temple or it was a part of fortification, probably of Maratha rulers. It is dedicated to either Vishnu or Shiva as the representations of Vishnu are as numerous as those of Shiva. The most original feature of the temple is a peristyle delimiting an ambulatory around the temple itself and whose walls are covered with sculptures of different gods or goddesses. Two staircases provide access to the porch at the entrance of the temple itself. The sober and square pillars are decorated with characters around the porch and the entrance to the peristyle.
