25 Tory Street, Te Aro, Wellington 6011, New Zealand, Lower Hutt
Stylish Chinese restaurant featuring a menu of dim sum & other traditional dishes, plus a full bar.
Very nice place to have dinner with family. Very good and professional staff, nice ambiance. Clean toilets. Great choice of food for adults and for kids. My 6 year daughter loved here,
It’s hard for me not to enjoy an experience where I’m hungry for my first meal of the day and immediately upon being seated people begin to offer me delicious food. Loads of people with different types of carbs and fats served with delightful sauces. The pork dumplings are by far my favorite, although I’m partial to duck, although sometimes getting it at Yum Cha isn’t the best option as it can dry out. I do enjoy the busyness and energy of this popular dim sum restaurant in Wellington. If you choose to go be very hungry and ready to try new things!
An authentic yum cha/dim sum experience in the heart of Wellington! Huge variety of all the traditional favourites brought around on trays and carts and a few new ones to try, like durian mochi.Skip breakfast before you come. ;Photo taken before we really got started then got too busy gorging to document...Cheerful decor and popular spot so make a booking, but lost a star from me due to the strong smell of bleach.
Service was fantastic unfortunately food was not. Left very disappointed with a very expensive bill for what we got. Pity as was really looking forward to some good Chinese food
Risk of catastrophic accident / OSH issueI recently went with a large group of friends for a banquet meal at Dragons on one of their very busy nights. The food was excellent as usual.I’d like to explain a serious issue which had a bearing on my dining experience. The wait staff are very proficient at bringing large banquet dishes to tables of 10.But 2-3 of our dishes were cast-iron caudrons of bubbling hot liquid food which were slid between myself and the friend seated next to me, over our shoulders and placed onto the lazy susan by the waitress. This is a high risk situation which made me feel very uncomfortable as any sudden movement could have bumped the waitress causing a catastrophic accident. In future, I will ask the waitress to give me prior warning so I could safely stand up and move away from the danger zone.Spilling a greasy dim sim dish over our shoulders would be a messy inconvenience. These were bubbling, boiling, heavy cauldrons of food.
The place was perfect busy but great vibes perfect customer service always looked after the young man in there who was serving was so well top kid always said to enjoy our meal every time this place is a 5 star go to I recommend anyone to try this you want be let down price is what you pay for its high but worth it 👌 😊
Very delicious Chinese food. Bottom line is the quality of their service is at another level. Probably the best I’ve ever experienced in Wellington. Kind and warm and pleasant. Make me feel awesome. Well done.
Honestly one of the best restaurants in Wellington. Been here for birthdays , anniversaries and whenever we want to eat out. The palace is always packed and has always got friendly, knowledgeable and helpful staff on. Not to mention the food is amazing! Would highly recommend.
Me and my love had a good time we love the food we ordered. We enjoy it very much.
Amazing! This place has gotten SO much better since my last visit years ago. We had a beautiful selection of dumplings, including a prawn and truffle dumpling(!), good siumoi and very nice scallop dumpling. Ill be coming back to try the clams in half shell, the durian mochi and the ice cream mochi!
Bustling & popular, and for good reason. Bookings for yum char essential. Lots of variety of dishes, food comes thick & fast. They have sittings & remind you when its time to leave.
Amazing yum cha !!!
We have been to this place a number of times. It can be a hit and a miss @ times, because they are very busy sometimes the food can be a bit cold. We enjoy the yum cha and will definitely go back
Did Yum Char for the first time in many many years. Not impressed. Got a good table on the raised section. Party of eight. Told we only had one hour to eat. Food came out so fast we could have been in and out in 30 minutes. Not relaxing. Felt more like "eat as much as you can in as little time as possible". Ive heard Grand Century further up Tory Street let you stay as long as you need.
Sharing platters were delicious!Would highly recommend
My first visit and it was great. The food was lovely. The team were friendly and helpful. A stunning restaurant!
Went for yum char today. OMG it was amazing. Beautiful fresh food, wonderful flavours and great variety. Had to take some home as gif to much snd still a lot of things we didn’t get to try. Will have to go again to try more
Yummy KAI and well enjoyed by our crew. Thank you for the service, until next timeKa kite ano
Don’t be fooled by these reviews! Came here after reading a few that said “authentic” but this has to be the worst, most inauthentic yum cha I’ve ever had. Ordered Shanghai “juicy” pork dumplings - these had absolutely no soup whatsoever, just chunky pork mix that tasted like a sausage roll. Also ordered chicken dumplings which were deep fried rather than pan fried - very basic and not authentic at all! These are service station dim sims at best.
Tried the yum cha during dinner time. Everything is around $10, pretty pricey. But food taste good. Would love to come back on morning yum cha
Dragons is the go to in our family. We come here once a week, sometimes even twice. The sunday yum cha is superior and it always leaves us smiling ear to ear with a tummy full. The staff are incredible, great service and treat everyone like family. We have been coming here now for over 3 years and don’t plan on ever stopping. If you are in wellington and looking for incredible Chinese with even better people this is it! Couldn’t recommend enough.
One of my favorite Chines restaurants in Wellington. It has Yum Char menu for lunch and the choices of the menu that they offer are quite abundant. My favorites are the steamed dumplings (prawns, scallops, mushroom, veggies etc), spicy chicken feet, beef ribs, veggie fried rice, deep fried squid, eggplants with prawn and fish, sautée veggies as well as the roasted duck. They also have more menu from the a la carte if the yum cha is not enough.Their desserts are also lovely! Don’t miss the egg tarts, custard tarts, sesame balls, jelly, mocchi ice cream and more. The place is quite spacious but during lunch it can be packed. The service is fast and good. The price starts from NZD 6 for small plates. It has high chairs as well as fit for those with disabilities. It might be a bit narrow for wheelchairs but with a little help, those with reduced mobility can get a seat here. They also have the toilet for the disable.Parking might be a bit problematic during the peak hours like lunch and dinner. Nevertheless, the place is easily reachable with public transport.
Hands down best Chinese restaurant in Wellington. Authentic food and hood ambience.
Good food and excellent service!
Had the most revolting dinner at Dragon this evening. The gluten free ribs were just fatty blobs nothing like they should beCompletely inedibleThe fried rice was also awfulNo flavour stodgy tasted fattyWill never recommendWill never come backUsed to come here often years ago gosh it has changed!!!Do not recommend!!!
Lovely friendly service we did the $48 set menu lovely tasty food. Loved the chicken and corn soup best orange beef Ive tasted so far and the calamari was nicely seasoned.
The food and service here are great one of my favorite places to eat in Wellington. Booking essential for weekends just to make sure u get in cause u may have to wait.Pics: lemon chicken, crispy squid sweet and sour pork.
Always love this place. Their food is good! But the last Orange beef and Salt abd Pepper pork we had were chewy. We will still cone back but probably not order them.
Really great yum cha lunch - quick and continuous service, fresh and delicious food and didnt feel like we were rushed at all. Really good variety of dishes to choose from - table favourites were the pork belly, garlic beans, crispy prawn rice rolls and custard tarts! I think it helped we chose a Monday yum cha as weekends can get very full and loud. Would definitely recommend
Nice place for yum cha, make sure you book in advance. Great selection of food, however you feel a little rushed in eating. Time limit applies to yum cha seating. Busy and popular place worth a visit at least once.
Great Cantonese food and staff friendly, we had Paua, steamed ginger chicken, stuffed grilled eggplant, mushroom and fish maw soup. Everything was excellent.
Great Yumcha spot which is busy day and night! They do offer a night Yumcha which is often hard to find! Difference between menus is the price :)Either than that we enjoyed the place, had all the regular items you grab and added a unique touch to them
Pretty average experience here tbh. Was not impressed by any of the dishes.
Very authentic experience. Definitely on the pricey side. Was a bit weird having the waiters cone every few minutes. They kept asking "can we get you anything to drink" "do you want more tea" "do you want more water" "can we get you anything else". The food was pretty good, and the seatinf area is clean and tidy.
Never been before so got waiter to choose food huge portions too much for 2 oeople. Saw most people exiting after eating with food parcels basic setting fast service good menu. Worth eating out there when in Wellington but would order smaller dishes next time. Wine selection poor but other drinks ok.
Amazing place! With great choices of food. Better to go with group to enjoy different varieties.
Not from Wellington. Always come to Dragons Restaurant (3 yearsGreat food. My friend is Vegan. They are able to accommodate such dietary requirements which is wonderful. Delicious food always. Very efficient food and beverage staff. Highly recommend you visit for an authentic Chinese culinary experience.
I would suggest you book as we did, it was packed.Within minutes of sitting at our table the food trolleys arrived serving their dishes to us. There was so much to choose from that we felt terrible turning away a lot of the trolley servers. Highly recommend this restaurant for their authentic dishes and faultless service. This is now our number ONe Yum Cha Restaurant.
Went dinner here with fam and had great time. Was quite a busy night on Thursday, staff were helpful and friendly. Food was a bit slow on the service side. Food was decent and portion was alright. Most favorite was the eggplant with minced fish, very yummy sauce as well. Overall it was a great experience
Booked for 1130 2nd of January, packed to the brim.Yum cha arrived as soon as we sat down then we were asked what type of tea we would like and before we started the the first dish a hot pot of tea was placed on the table.Very fast and helpful staff, all spoke Cantonese and English well.Fresh food and not rushed even wine was served promptly.Chilli oil and soy sauce was already at the table.Only issue I had was glutinous chicken rice was to large, and I could not finish it my self🤭.Cant wait to eat here again.
I visit here often with family and friends, and the food and service are excellent. There are a lot of yum char favourites and special dishes too. If they dont have your favourite dish when they come to your table, you can request it and if its available they will get one brought to you. I wish that the sittings were for more than an hour, but Dragons is so popular, they need to free up tables so everyone gets to enjoy themselves :Truly the best yum char restaurant in Welly.
You can easily understand why Dragons Restaurant is one of the top three Yum Chas in Aotearoa. The bowls are loaded with fresh and yummy Chinese delicacies like seafood, dimsims, crabmeat, pork and duck roasts, vegetables to chicken feet. Not like some yum char restaurants the good stuff kept on being delivered from meal start to last mouthful with excellent waiters explaining the contents of latest deliveries.
A+ presentation. Friendly staff great customer service. Been here for dining inside and outside of WOAP (Wellington on a platebeer pairings with Garage project were fabulous and complemented the food.
Excellent food! Excellent service! I finally got to eat authentic Chinese food. They have a huge variety of choices for food. Their servers were always available when you need them. The food that we ordered were all delicious! The shumai pieces were big. The sweet and sour fried blue cod was huge! The pork spare ribs with black beans was so yummy! The chicken with corn soup was also great! The mango jelly tasted good but it had a lot of mango hair which kind of annoyed me a little bit. All our food orders did not take too long to be served to us. I am also happy to discover that they deliver food to our area, which is way outside the CBD. I definitely recommend Dragons Restaurant!
Good Chinese food served at Kiwi portion size. All the dim sum standards are good and if they offer the clams on noodles in a shell, take them. Friendly service in a busy, energetic environment.
Found this restaurant close to our accommodation. What an awesome find,! Loved every dish and attentive staff looking after you constantly but unobtrusive. Will visit again. Fresh seafood available straight from the tanks
If not, the best yum cha option in Wellington.Does the basics well.Super busy, so bookings needed. The service can be a mixed bag...
After spending so much time in Wellington, we had reached the last day - Sean proposed to eat Chinese food at his favourite restaurant called Dragons Restaurant in downtown area, which coincidentally located near his showroom. It was very windy in the evening but we braved the chill to walk all the way there from where we parked our car. This restaurant was obviously popular with the local folks. Stepping into the restaurant and it feels like any other regular Chinese restaurants.◾steamed fish with superior soy sauce - it actually tasted pretty good with the fresh fish and good grade soy sauce.◾Sweet & sour pork - kids love it so why not?◾Roasted pork belly - compared to the ones we find in Malaysia, their version was thicker but still good. While I prefer the roasted pork in its original taste, I think that New Zealanders like it with sweet sauce◾braised taufu with seafood◾stir fried long beans with dried shrimpOne word of caution - the portion was huge for all the dishes as per western standard. We could not finish the dishes and had to takeaway in the end. Nonetheless, this is definitely the most popular Chinese restaurant in the capital of New Zealand.
Delicious Chinese alacarte dishes. Seasonings added of course but all good in moderation. Good atmosphere for families and general large gatherings. Friendly staff and always on the dot to help with anything.
Not bad for a random find on a random walkabout. Good variety of different items and the staff are good to come by every few minutes to offer a new item or so. Id say one of the best yum cha Ive ever had.
