Contrada Donnafugata, 97100 Ragusa RG, Italy, Ragusa
Palatial baronial residence, now a museum, with period furnishings, a costume gallery & gardens.
So many reason to visit the castle…the fascinating and opulent interiors, the incredible collection of dresses from the bygone era. One of the largest and most complete in existence, don’t miss that. And of course, the terrace where Montalbano meets with the Vigata’s boss, Don Balduccio.
Very romantic castle and very well kept! Really enjoyed walking around the rooms and the garden.I didnt have the guts to try and navigate the maze in the grounds.
Really enjoyed the trip round seeing the ongoing preservation work in a house that almost feels lived in
Plenty of recent history and picturesque setting. Lots of ongoing work which limits access at the moment.
Interesting from Montalbano connection, but also has a very interesting collection of clothes, well displayed, could have done with a lunch place serving snacks, the menus all looked rather formal. It has a stone maze similar to Hampton Court. Not sure how you get out if lost!
Beautiful castle and surrounding gardens.
A stunning castle and a wonderful costume museum. beautiful old interiors, well preserved. incredible museum of costumes of several centuries. and the original labyrinth, which really adds to the thrill.
Marvelous castle, a real voyage in time also thanks to the beautiful museum dedicated to the evolution of fashion over centuries. Highly recommended!
Lovely museum! Some dresses were not outdated, still can be worn nowadays. The mirror in the middle of the museum makes you look really slim! Some parts on the wall looked 3d, but its actually 2d!Theres parking, not free. Close to the parking, theres new gelato shops. Taste good!
A great place to visit. There are three different venues. A clothing museum display clothes of the former Sicilian owners of the palace from early 1600s through the 1920s. The castle residences with original furnishings, wallpaper, frescos and many other item. A glimpse into the aristocracy of Sicily. The gardens for a nice walk around the exterior of the castle. Plan to visit the gardens at night and maybe a. Pizza and wine.
Lovely castle with great views over the landscape. Nice walled maze in the gardens. Interesting museum showing fashion through the ages.
Off the beaten track but accesible by car or train. Well worth the visit especially for us Montalbano fans. Did not enter the museum, preferring to enjoy the grounds and beautiful views to the south and punta secca.
It was close 🥲. But pictures around are still beautiful.
Transported back in time.Very nice castle or baronial residence should I say.The gardens are magnificient and the museum inside is very interesting.Somehow, we felt immersed in these old days.Highly recommend.
Not a castle; a palatial manor house 20 minutes outside Ragusa. Well preserved summer home from the 1800s. Interesting, thought provoking. Beautiful home, nice garden, an interesting side of Sicily. Theres a very decent snack bar, clean toilets and lots of signage to tell you what youre looking at.
Well worth the visit. Well kept. Gardens were enjoyable. Costume collection on display was informative
It is really worth to see. Yous should consider the weather-Inside there is bery hot is summer days. Pictures landscapes and interesting history
Unforgettable experience, from the moment that you step in, you are dream back in time when cars were horses and sneakers were Victorian slippers. The magic of the garden and the labyrinth add to the experience. Visit in the late afternoon and get a refreshing aperitivo right at the exit of the castle, you won’t regret it.
A 3 hours visit is perfect. The museum about fashion since the xviii century and the rooms of the castle are wonderful. Do not miss the maze and the park around it! The labyrinth is very funny indeed.
We visited only the park (we plan to come back for the rest). It was a wonderful and peaceful experience. Huge trees, flowers, enchanting atmosphere and a short amusing maze.
Nice place, easy parking (at a fee but not expensive), intetesting.
Pay to visit the maze, worth it ! Full ticket 10euro, 7euro kids, free for small kids. Slow visit time around 2 hours. Press 👍 below if this was helpfull. 😇
Great place to visit. Close to the train station literally in the middle of nowhere. Love the park near the castle and some interesting interiors to see!
Absolutely the best day out. The castle and its grounds are stunning. The museum exhibiting fashion through the ages is truly fascinating. Great restaurants too, so no need to bring food but a picnic in the gorgeous gardens would also be ideal. Work up an appetite in the amazing stone maze, great fun. Excellent value for money, cant recommend this dazzling place highly enough.
Beautiful museum if fashion, small but rich. Castle furnished in full antiques collectibles and garden untarnished and not too well groomed; quite crude and natural. The maze..... A real game .... Not easy to get out once you get in ...
Very interesting exhibition on the development of clothing over the years. The castle and the history of those who lived there is very interesting. Certainly worth the visit.
Really cute museum, and an incredible fantastic view from the terrace, such a little gem of a place, so happy it was restored and its now open to visitors.
Very nice costume museum.Nice castle halls and rooms but in need of some repairs.Large grounds, enjoyed labyrinth but gardens are in desperate need of landscaping.Very clean toilets.Still a positive experience.
We visited in November, so there was hardly anyone else there, and no need to pay in the carpark. We ate lunch well first in one of the trattoria just outside the castle. In the castle there were helpful staff to show you where to go. The display of clothes over the past several hundred years was interesting - the ladies dresses were so impractical, and so ornate. I spent almost an hour looking at the exhibition. The terrace of the castle, used in Montalbano for the home of the mafia boss, is worth seeing with its turrets and views down to the sea. Inside its interesting to wander through the furnished rooms and speculate how they must have lived in such a house a hundred and fifty years or so ago.The garden is very large and worth exploring, even if it has been let go somewhat. They have a very good maze with stone walls, which took some escaping from!I would recommend a visit, but like a lot of things in Sicily, dont expect everything to maintened to a high level but take it as it is.
This is the place you need to visit once in your life. The peaceful is insane, the garden is huge and there is a labyrinth that you can also visit, it was super fan. The castle is well maintained and the story of the owner was interesting and fun at the same time. They checked the temperature and the Green Pass as well.
Absolutely worth a visit, and definitely get a gelato from the place next to the cow corral afterwards.
Visiting This Castle is a must !.ideally arriving early afternoon, to have time to visit the castle which is still in good shape and grounds which arent that well kept pity thoughThen stay on for supper or just wine and nibbles in a lively atmosphere just outside the castello !
Beautiful Castle and the garden is amazing!
Having a walk in the ancient castle to admire the magnificent architecture and furnishing of the era is absolutely worth it, and the view from top of the towers is breath taking. Finally there is a maze for a little challenge at the end.
Wonderful Place to visit in the middle of Sicily. The castle is surrounded by an amazing garden that allow to to loose yourself in the hottest hours under the shadow of humongous trees
I mean nice castle. But the biggest attraction is the bull and cow farm. Restaurants in the are are always full up so book before!Free parking is limited but there is a field where you pay 2 euro
Lovely hidden gem. Needs maintenace but will worth a visit in its current state let alone if maintained
Beautiful if somewhat aging former residence with fully furnished rooms to view and some magnificent gardens (if a little unkempt). The self guided tour follows a single route through the building on the first floor with info panels in English & Italian. Parking in the large gravel car park is €2 all day (note: there is little shade)
Wonderful history and nostalgia. You can easily spend a few hours around the castle and grounds. Theres not much else in the area to see or do, but we were pleasantly surprised by the restaurant near the entrance. Food was plenty and plates were large. All we needed was a bench to sleep on afterwards!!! If you have half a day to kill with friends, family or just scouting the countryside, you would do good to have a visit.
An interesting insight into the history of Sicilian ruling classes. A number of rooms are available to the public showing how they lived, dressed and what their interests were. It is inexpensive to visit therefore worth the visit if you are in that part of the island. And for fans of Inspector Montalbano, scenes were shot for the meeting with the head of the mafia.
Beautiful sight of an old Castle whos very well preserved. Its definitely worth to be visited. Parking and entrance are not free.
Unfortunately the garden is completely unkempt and even the interiors look somewhat in need of some maintenance
This place is truly beautiful! The castle takes you for a journey back in time to the 19th century when Queen Blanche of Navarre fled and hid in Donnafugata Castle from Count Bernardo Cabrera. I was astonished by a marvelous garden with some old trees and plants. One more place worth mentioning is a labyrinth where you can have some fun by looking for a center of it. Unfortunately only one floor of the Castle is available for the visitors and big part of the garden is being neglected. I hope this place will be taken care much better in the future.
Nice landscape and gardens. Views are beautiful too.
Great castle and worth the price. We really enjoyed the labarinth and the gardens. Some good views from the towers and a nice bar outside for a drink and a rest after. The catacombs signposted at the entrance are a lovely walk as well.
Probably not worth travelling hours to see, but definitely worth a visit if you are in Ragusa or Punta Secca. Hilarious C19 pastiche of a castle with lovely gardens.
Even if Im not a big fan of the art nouveau this place is a must to visit. Visiting the castle and the garden you can definitely learn something about the lifestyle of the Noble class of the late nineteen century. There even a labyrinth with stone walls. Beautiful exposition of dresses.
Imposing edifice that locals are very proud of. There are a number of trattorias outside for meals and refreshments. They were filming when we visited so unable to see inside, but explored the gloriously overgrown garden and marvelled at the enormous stone maze (didnt go in - we were warned that people got lost there). Tip: before you leave look for the sign and walk down the track to the 5th century catacombs, little bit of a trek but a hidden find...
It was a rare rainy day in Sicily, so a great time to visit the castle. Nicely restored rooms and displays of period items. Worth a visit!
Awesome castle, drive up has great views. The garden is massive and beautiful. The rooms we saw were well kept. I wish they had a guide available or more documents in English so you could appreciate the history.well worth a visit.
