Cuartel de Ballaja, Calle Norzagaray Esq. Beneficiencia, San Juan, PR 00901, United States, San Juan
Cozy cafe featuring house-roasted local beans, pour-overs, light fare & displays on coffee-making.
Really good coffee! Love the tucked away location, and great aesthetic inside.
Delicious latte with oat milk! Also got the waffles and breakfast burrito which were 👌🏼
This place could be tricky to find since its inside the plaza (theres usually a sign outside indicating that). The cafe has a great easy going, chill ambience and the baristas were nice and friendly. We were a bit disappointed with the coffee though. It felt imbalanced and weak.
Delicious coffee and gorgeous place 😍
Cool little coffee spot tucked away in the corner of the Cuartel de Ballajá building. A little hard to find, but the smooth, delicious coffee is worth it. Tasty selection of panenee s and wraps are also available.
Very nice coffee shop with great breakfast options. Friendly staff and great music and location
A little difficult to find with the current construction going on, but well worth it! Enter through the main entrance for the museum. We had food that was a perfect way to start the day and service was great.
Ice coffee and air conditioning on a hot day located near the fort and art museum. Good place to spend 30 minutes at to refresh in the middle of the afternoon.
We had a coffee and local breakfast style sandwich here. The sandwich was delicious and the coffee was the best I have ever had. If we return to San Juan we will return to Don Ruiz. Dont second guess yourself, buy some beans for the road.
This was our go-to for coffee (espresso-basedin Old San Juan. They have top-of-the-line equipment (Slayer espresso machine). A dark roast was on tap during our stay, and it was everything you would hope for out of a dark roast espresso.
Great flavours regardless whether you want them hot or cold. Personally tried the iced vanilla rose.
Definitely the best coffee in Puerto Rico. We tries others but this is the best. Final day in PR we made a special trip back to Old San Juan from San Juan just to get one more cup. It is hard to find in it locale but well worth the hunt !!
Great quality coffee, pricey but worth a visit. I ordered an iced latte and it was strong and had a nice toasted flavor
We had the nicest server who helped me chose a lovely flavored iced tea. The kind of place you want to visit often if for no other reason than the vibe.
This a beautiful coffee shop that makes a great french toast and a strong cup of Puerta Rican coffee.. I recommend anyone spending there day in Old San Jaun to start there day at Don Ruiz.
Good coffee....need to stock more the coffee for sale...they rarely have beans to sell.
Perfect coffee stop! The coffe is good and great price. We had a cortadito and a latte with a panetella de guayaba. Nice small sweet with coffee.
Micheal was so helpful and kind to give me a sample taste of the CBD Anxiety relive tea! It was so dang good! It’s me and my girlfriends favorite tea these days! We also got Passion & Love white tea. The whole staff was so great! They made our first time and quick stop to this cute coffee cafe to be memorable! Thank you!
Delicious breakfast sandwiches and coffee. Located inside the museum and can be accessed from the 2 side entrances. Friendly staff, cozy ambiance inside the museum. You can also purchase the coffee beans to take home. We loved their coffee beans very smooth to taste.
Most amazing cappuccino Ive ever had seriously, Ive been to alot of places and Ive never had a cappuccino better. The place has a whole story which I also really appreciated nothing like a history lesson with your amazing cup of coffee. To the Barista (Michaelkuddos, thank you for being excellent at your craft. There is also a awesome little museum with actual working models that give you a kid at a toy shop feel it was great. Me being a mechanical engineer doesnt make my opinion bias at all. 😅
One of the best sandwiches I have ever had! I got a breakfast croissant with ham and it was absolutely perfect! It was a little hard to find the place but it was well worth it. I love this place and you will not be disappointed ❤
The food and service is 10/10.We had 5 sandwiches; we got them fast and it was delicious. The staff were patient and helpful while we were ordering. I would definitely recommend this small but beautiful coffee shop to anyone.
Delicious coffee, excellent breakfast. A little pricey but no complaints! You’ll find this place inside the Cuartel de Ballaja.
Delicious coffee and brunch, generous portions, kind staff and very fair prices. The outdoor seating area at Cuartel de Ballaja is very cozy too. Highly recommended!
I really liked this place. We ordered a turkey wrap, veggie omelette, and a type of ham sandwich. The portions were large and filling. Everything was cooked well. We also had cappuccino and they were delicious. Its a little pricey but not so much for being a tourist area. The cafe is inside the museum. There are no signs anywhere to guide you. This is why I took away one star.
The coffee at Don Ruiz was pretty good. The building it was in was even more impressive. Even if you don’t want coffee, stop by this location to see the enormous courtyard and building surrounding it.
A great little spot. The mango and strawberry banana smoothies were delicious. We also had the El Pavo (turkeywrap that comes with chips. Very good. This was a great little oasis after touring El Castillo San Felipe de Morro. Place has great character.
Coffee is amazing very smooth and fresh food was tasty and the service was goodAnniversary weekend with the hubby ❤️
First stop on the Food tour! We started here and it was very brief but the pastry was very good. It was nice and warm; toasted and it had ham and cheese with powdered sugar on top with some coffee.
Such a great spot in the cut in OSJ. Baristas are pros and the coffee is first-class. They have a nice selection of postres and breakfast items. The Mallorca sandwiches are awesome, ham or Turkey on the softest bread , warmed in the oven and sprinkled with powdered sugar. The omelet is also a winner, served with fresh buttered bread. It’s great because you can park a scooter in front ( there are only 3 areas to park scooters in OSJand go into the plaza and eat there or take it to go and sit on the lawn at El Morro. Highly recommend this spot
Great coffee. I tried the coconut flavored latte and it was yumm!
My friends and I were looking for a place with coffee and wifi after walking all noon. It’s a hip place to chill at and study. The coffee is good and reasonably priced. They have flavored coffee too. It’s one of my favoritte cafés in Old San Juan.
I came here once before and the experience was good. I came a second time (from Miamito have a cappuccino in their red ceramic cups, but instead they give it to me in a paper cup. They told me theyre giving out paper cups because theyre about to close. I looked at my watch it was 4:28 pm. They close at 5:30 pm... The barista seemed to express a little funk. Oh! And there was a curly hair in my girlfriends cup.. it was good while it lasted, I guess.
Amazing service, good hidden spot to escape the busy Old San Juan scene during the day. Sit down and enjoy a rich, roasted inside the store coffee.
Came across the coffee shop on the way to the Fortress. I would say this was the best coffee I had during my three-day stay in San Juan. Love the decor and the atmosphere.
Im not really a coffee drinker but the latte I had was pretty good and even had a iguana design which was pretty cool considering we had seen a lot of them earlier in the day. The mini cinnamon rolls were decent. The service was really good and the staff was very pleasant and helpful.
They grow their beans on the local farm has been in in the family a long time and then roast several times a week in the shop. Took me a while to find a place that serves pour overs where I could enjoy the great flavor of local coffee. Highly recommend!
We’ve had coffee at several places in San Juan and for now, this is the best coffee so far. Ordered a small cappuccino with an extra shot. Delicious, smooth flavor. I definitely recommend. Also a plus, A/C inside and public restrooms near.
Great space. Friendly staff. We had frozen lattes and mallorcas with ham and cheese and they were delicious. Bought some coffee to take home with us and cant wait to try it.
Delicious coffee, one of the best in Puerto Rico. Excellent location and good atmosphere. Little selection of breakfasts in the week.
Great coffee in a beautiful area. The coffee is grown at their own local farm. Mid-day on Saturday they will even roast in-house.I visited in late October on a Saturday morning. I was a bit confused walking up, given that it is not a stand alone store, nor is it immediately accessable from the street. You have to walk into the museum courtyard from the street and it will be found tucked away in a corner. Cannot recommend enough.
I thought I had already tried the best best coffee in Italy, but nope, this place leaves all other coffee experiences short, great lattes, cappuccinos, macciatos. I tried to recreate the same taste at home with my nespresso and failed. If i lived in San Juan i would make this my morning stop.
Great coffee, great ambience, great people. It’s a place that after you go around old San Juan you can chill have a coffee enjoy a lil of history of this place and see how the coffee you drink is getting roasted. If you have a chance enjoy a moment of a great coffee.
It’s a must go place in San Juan. Everything about this place is just awesome. Coffee and food both are pretty delicious. Great for vegetarians, pesto sandwich was very fresh and good, also their blueberry muffin. Staff was so polite and helpful. We liked it so much that we went again next morning, but unfortunately it was Sunday and they open at 10. Anyways, I am looking forward to go there again on my next trip to Puerto Rico.
Don Ruiz is a must visit coffee shop in San Juan. Worth every penny & journey getting their. I grew up drinking coffee. My wife loves coffee and the coffee here was so good that we went 3x before returning to Fl. Its the best coffee we ever had! The sandwich with provolone, ham, pesto sauce was delicious and to top it off the warm guave cheese pastry made our journey perfect! I met the manager and he was very humble and friendly. The reviews dont lie. If you want to taste the best PR coffee this is the place. Park at the fort and hike 2 blocks. Coffee Heaven is their. Oh and the building takes you back in time. Amazing!
Solid Coffee from here! They are one of the few with many different types of pours. They have their own coffee farm they resources from. The environment is super cozy inside and you can hang out the beautiful Ballaja outside if you want too. The turkey and egg sandwiches were very tasty as well. If you’re around the area, definitely get a cup of coffee here
I had a cafe latte and an egg & cheese croissant and my daughter had the mini cinnamon rolls and quesitos (cheese turnovers& a banana, all for only $10. Food was hot and delicious! Service was excellent and you get free glasses of ice water. We sat at the tables right in the plaza. Really cool old San Juan feel. Highly recommend.
Ive walked through this area dozens of times and never knew this awesome place existed! The plaza is almost this fun hidden treasure. Everything is so yummy, the place is cozy and the customer service is on point. If you love chocolate and bananas, try the funky monkey and pair it with their moist banana bread.
The best coffee in San Juan. Nice place, great service. The barista guy explain the prosses of doing a great coffee experince.
The prices are a bit high for what you get. I had a macchiato, and it wasnt really anything special. The atmosphere is great and the outdoor seating overlooks the museum court. Baristas speak perfect English, and they do offer milk alternatives (soy, almond).
