Compact cafe with eclectic decor serving Nepalese dishes with an Indian & Mediterranean twist.
I’m very disappointed to report that I called on this fine Sunday evening to place an order for carry out and was treated quite rudely. It sounded like the restaurant was busy but this should not be a pretense to be disrespectful to a customer. I asked for menu advice and was told not only that they were quite busy and that the person helping me was “doing many things at once,” but also that she ..”can’t tell me what to eat.” If I was ordering in my native New York I would have given her a piece of my mind, but since I am happy in Madison Wisconsin I restrained myself. Dobhan serves quality food and it’s always been a nice atmosphere, though not so busy. Being busy is a good thing, if you can’t hang working in a busy restaurant you shouldn’t be working in service. The good news is it was the impetus for me to cook my own tasty vegetarian dinner. So thanks for that saved me some money, but you lost a customer along the way.
Like eating inside a museum! They created a dish to meet my step-fathers highly restrictive diet. Delicious food, kind, friendly staff, visually fascinating and engaging artwork and sculpture from Nepal and other parts of Asia.
Visited here from out of town...I’ve eaten all sorts of Indian & Nepalese cuisine in most major US cities. This rendition is far too expensive for what you get: very watered down Nepalese/Indian spices and slow service to boot.
Good... Just shy of great... Sometimes its great... Other times its just ok... You can order the same dish everytime ... But it will be made different... They could be more consistent.... Last time we were there the food was heavily salty... We asked why .. They replied the cook used too much soy sauce and walked away with no offer to right their wrong. Another time they left out some important ingredients to the dish and it completely changed it and not in a good way...But if you are lucky enough to get the right chef...it can be amazing.
This place is AMAZING!!! The staff is wonderful, helpful, and friendly. Best brunch in Madison hands down! I am shocked it is not packed full every weekend. Best eggs benedict which you can choose tofu, bacon, or ham. The hollandaise sauce is to die for and the eggs, like magic, are always poached PERFECTLY! And, thats just one option from a stupendous menu! THANK YOU DOBHAN!!!
Lovely space! Plenty of vegan options, just wish they were more clearly indicated on the menu.
Wonderful, attentive service and a delicious menu with just enough, but not too many options. We enjoyed the Mediterranean Flat Bread with the different dips, but would have liked more of the bread (as we hoped they’d have a Naan on the menu, but this was the closest we could find). The Shrimp Masala was tasty and presented well, but needed more spice and flavor. The Moroccan Chicken Tagine was good with lots of different flavors, tender, juicy meat, with enough left to take some home.Would return and try other options!
Very nice experience. Curry was good, I needed a little extra spice but they were able to accommodate. Prices was good I found it reasonable and portion sizes were perfect. Thought the service could have been a little more attentive but overall a nice experience. I would go back for other menu options, everything looked good.
The food is so good RICK SPRINGFIELD eats here! Yes, its true. Friendly, happy and knowledgeable staff. Sometimes can be a little slow, but the beautiful decor compensates for this. Decor? Tibetan theme with colorful art. Real hardwood tables, booths and woodwork.Weekend brunch is robust. I recommend the waffle and omelette. Enjoy!
Always excellent food and service. The Coconut Chicken is my favorite. Only item I e not been impressed by was small plate Curry Shrimp. It was tasty but too pricey for small number of shrimp.
We were so impressed by the quality and deliciousness of the food here!!!! Have walked by many times and said "we should stop in" but since Dobhan doesnt open til 5:00 most days, and were retired folks, we generally get out and about for a meal earlier than that.Everything.... I repeat .... Everything ... was amazing. Salad, flat bread, lamb stir fry, and Amazing Norwegian salmon. Wow!!! Truly. The service was gracious and prompt also. We will Definitely be back. Thank you for this wonderful restaurant in our neighborhood ❤️PS: They are open earlier for brunch on the weekend.
I have a bad and good review.First- our service dog found a thumb tack under our table (luckily he didnt step on itand they ran out of tarter sauce by 700 on their Friday fish fry night. They offered the salmon sauce which was horrible with my cod. With tarter sauce the cod would have been EXCELLENT!But who goes to a place like this for fish when anything else on their menu is so yummy? And their exceptional servers and atmosphere make this a place worth dining at time and time again.
Ive been dining regularly at Dobhan for the last nine tears and it has secured top spot for meeting friends for dinner. The menu is excellent and features, as the owner describes it, a confluence of cuisine from around the world. The owner, Rajan Pradam, often mingles with dinner guests and shares stories about his native Nepal. Rajan is an artist and the restaurant reflects it, both in the interior design and the beautiful original art gracing the walls. For a fine dining experience I highly recommend Dobhan.
Very very good ribs! Unique menu with a diverse range of of food.
So, I am not sure what cuisine this restaurant is aiming for - Indian, Mexican, American, fusion of something? It has listed some Indian dishes which in my opinion are below average. Tried Dosa and Pakora and they werent close to what you get in a decent Indian joint. Dear Chef, if its truly Indian dish, thats not how they are supposed to be prepared. Tried Fish special - Nothing special about it. It was an average fish and decent quantity. Overall 3 stars for the service and food.
Love the place! The food is always fresh and very tasty. The staff goes out of their way so you have a great experience. Ive been there several times.will go there several more!
Im always surprised Dobhan isnt busier. The food is fresh, locally sourced (when possibleand delicious! Its one of our favorite places to bring friends for brunch, and all the meals weve had have been fantastic. Dont miss their daily specials.
Single handily the best plate of food I have had here in Madison!!! WOW if I could I’d lick my plate.
I drive for a local colorful cab company and today I got the pleasure of driving the owner of this restaurant. He had a bag with him when he got into the car.It smelled... Heavenly.About halfway to the destination, I had to know what was in the bag!To my surpise, he pulled out a perfectly-wrapped and sliced home-made breakfast burrito, with garlic, onions and spices. He then said, if I wanted it, I could have it, no charge. You bet your biscuit I wanted that wrap! When we arrived, I asked for less than half of the total fare, but this mans philanthropy knows no bounds, and he nearly doubled the total fare.It was so kind and just what I needed today. If you read this, sir;Thank you, so much.If thats what you can do with eggs I cant wait to stop in and see what other sorcery you can pull off!
Good food that can cater to vegetarian or meat eater needs well. I think this is a hidden gem in Madison. This is the sort of place to go for dinner before a show at the nearby theater. Service is good, food comes out somewhat quicker than I expected. For a sit-down but a bad value.
This restaurant is not authentic Nepalese (they had Cuban and moroccan dishes on the menubut the flavors are right and the food is pretty good. The service was average at best with a long wait to order appetizers and the entrée arrived before I was done with the appetizer (the other 2 waitresses were much better than mine). The best part of the meal was the samosas. Very good!!! The croquette was pretty good and the lamb kebab was nicely spiced but tough and over cooked. I skipped dessert.
Good ambience and food was good. Though they specify food prepared with indian spices, they differ from similar Indian dishes. Had Nepali food for first time and I liked it. Mix their green chilly sauce to make your food more hot and spicy. Overall had good experience and we liked it.
Completely random find, and total kismet. Fantastic food and vibe.
This place is truly a hidden gem. Food is awesome, drinks are awesome. And the service is awesome. The owner is very personable. Great place for a event or just a date. I recommend the kabobs.
This is probably one of the best restaurants I have been to. I went yesterday and had a samosa and potato croquette for an appetizer. They were both delicious , so much flavor and they were just the right amount each . For dinner I started with a salad. The vegetables were amazingly nice and fresh and the dressing was fantastic 😊 it had a zest to it I loved it. For dinner I had the cod fish fry with coleslaw and french fries. Hands down the best and great customer service. Definitely will have to come here for brunch. It is worth it
This place is truly a find and came highly recommended, especially if you love lamb. The Moroccan Lamb Tagine was one of their specialty’s and will not disappoint. The lamb pieces were tender and flavorful (not gamey at all). The stew sits on top of a bed of couscous and marinated steamed vegetables. The pork chop is also another dish I would recommend. I believe the chop is marinated in a flavored brine, so it was very moist and not dry. Believe me if it was dry my kids wouldn’t have eaten it.The service was also top notch and the wait staff was very attentive, and the prices are decent. For a party of five, two adult beverages and two appetizers it was about $100. Definitely worth a visit if you’re in Madison!
Amazing food, friendly waitstaff, awesome atmosphere & neighborhood. I have NEVER been disappointed. And their smoked salmon eggs bene...TO DIE FOR!!!
Great food, wait staff, and atmosphere.
The food was pretty good. But the service was kind of slow. We also ordered drinks from the bar while we waited and they were pretty bad. The service we did get eventually was super nice...
Interesting Indian and South Asian fusion, and even some Mexican inspired themes as well. Got the lamb curry with the lentil soup. Soup was phenomenal and very well seasoned. The lamb was soft and curry was good as well. However, the dishes felt like they were being on the safe side and didnt really go depth of flavor. The place has interesting decor as well with a big Buddha sitting in the middle and a mix of different cultures hanging on the walls. The only theme was that it was at least Buddhist with some spiritual tinge. Nevertheless, the service was great and the atmosphere was low key.Might be controversial to some people, I liked it but I would prefer straight up Indian food over this fusion.
Food is closer to Indian than Chinese. Surprising that a Tibetan food restaurant wouldnt have momos on the menu. Shabby-chic interior, food competently prepared.
Favorite place to take visitors to town. Warm and interesting decor, good accoustics, excellent service great food. Guests tired of restaurant food exclaim about the freshness and delightful flavors.
Amazing food and a great atmosphere thats beautifully decorated and classy as all heck! Wow! Mostly South Asian food but some Middle Eastern and Mediterranean and other influences.
Dobhan serves a delicious array of Nepalese dishes. Its very conveniently located next door to the Barrymore Theatre, making it perfect for dinner and a show. It is vegan and vegetarian friendly but also has lots of options for carnivores.
Tough to review. Different experiences for brunch and dinner.Brunch: delicious eggs Benedict, great coffee, great service, fair prices. Ill go again and again for brunch.Dinner: Ive only been once, and I will not return for dinner. Service was terribly slow (30 minutes seated before offered anything other than water). Prices were too high, we didnt even get entrees because we ran out of time, so got appetizers and salads which came quickly but were terribly small portions for high prices. I didnt feel it was made up for by quality either.
Delicious food and fun atmosphere. We ordered middle eastern cuisine for our appetizers but ended up enjoying the grass fed burgers the most. They also offered a good selection of bottled craft beer.
Delicious food at reasonable price. I had the coconut chicken curry and cleaned my plate! Pretty quiet on a Thursday night. Good for dates or small groups.
I think their food is interesting and delicious. We had one each of their small plates except for the last item. Each dish was tasty and unique. Portions were good and we left full! Courteous, attentive, friendly staff too!!
Great food. The dishes are not as giant as everywhere else, but very tasty and delicious!
Such a delightful atmosphere. Every time I have been here the food is unbelievably tasty! I always leave super satisfied. It is not a place to come if you are in a hurry for a meal, it a place to come, relax and take your time to savor the food and atmosphere!
Dobhan is a fantastic restaurant. Its the only place to go for Nepali food in Madison. You know it is good because the menu is not flooded with filler dishes, but instead consists of unique dishes done really well. Definitely give it a shot.
My favorite restaurant in Madison. I purposely tried to order a type of food here that I do not like anywhere else, just to see if I would like Dobhans version, and even that was awesome! My favorite is the Salmon and mashed potatoes, with dahl soup, and the hummus and carrot spread with flatbread appetizer. Ive tried almost everything on the menu. Its all amazing, creative, high end food for affordable prices. The owner is a food artist.
Service may be a little slow but the food is absolutely worth the wait. Brunch is amazing - the only place Ive found cold smoked salmon eggs benedict and the lamb hash is spectacular.
The food was carefully prepared and close to authentic. Nice display of wall art and stand-alone artifacts. The place was clean and the bathroom included an upscale sink. The wait staff was nice, but not professional. They allowed us in a few minutes before the dinner opening time -- that was nice of them. Overall, a pleasant experience and good food.
Best Nepali food in Madison. Chef and owner is a creative genius who has cooked Nepali food for decades, formerly at Cha Tara on state street. Now he is trying out fusion dishes at Dobhan. Good eats!
After living in Chicago for the last ten years and moving to Madison just three months ago, I think this is one of the best restaurants in Madison. The food is always incredible and super fresh. I always get the Norwegian salmon, but the Indonesian dishes are delicious and Im always impressed with the consistency and friendliness of the staff.
The Lamb Kebobs were very good and the portion size was perfect for one. The food was tasty but a bit pricier in my opinion. The establishment is clean and our server was attentive.
The one place everyone in our family is happy to go too. Food is top notch with lots of variety. My husband loves the Saag--veggie meal of black beans and spinach with lovely seasoning-and I love the Lamb shish kabob or several of the small meals. the small meals are perfect portions for a reasonable dinner and a great value. Brunch is excellent too and I guess folks must not know how good it is as you can still get seating on Sundays.
One of my favorite restaurants! Flavors are great and always fresh veggies with entrees! Try the mojitos! Theyre made with fresh mint from the backyard! Love this place.
I read some Yelp reviews on this place and the biggest gripe was on the service. After going there I feel like those reviewers are assholes because they have a "Hiring" sign out front and obviously dont have enough staff to cover it all at the moment. But at least they are trying. The wait really wasnt that bad considering the lack of staff (probably about 20-25 minutes after ordering), but if youre looking to get fed quickly this may not be the place for you.I went for brunch and the food was very good. Id say this is a keen example of, "If you start with good ingredients, you dont have to try that hard." My Bloody Mary was very good with a little kick. Dobhan describes itself as Indian/Nepali food, but for brunch I would say its a pretty international menu with American, Mexican, and Indian dishes. I had the Chili Rancheros and was very happy.
