Bismarckstraße 35, 10627 Berlin, Germany, Charlottenburg-Nord
Modern theater, with capacity for 1885, hosting a program of opera & ballet, plus a chic restaurant.
Beautiful Building, wel organized, clean, and great ballet performance
Berlin hosts three opera stages: the comic opera or Komische Oper, the Staatsoper (reopened in the Mitte district and which had to move for several years to the west of Berlin within the walls of the Schiller Theaterand the Deutsche Oper Berlin (or DOB, West Berlin Opera). If the architecture remains contemporary and is strongly influenced by functionalism, the lyrical scene is at the forefront. I have been able to attend exceptional performances for ten years, in particular those featuring the stagings of Götz Friedrich, the famous director of the DOB, including The Mastersingers of Nuremberg or The Ring of the Nibelung. This opera in four performances (prologue and three daysbetter known as the tetralogy was given in 2017 in the staging of Götz Friedrich and is still contemporary.Beyond Wagner, the operas of Mozart, Italian masters are also given there, in particular through cycles: Puccini, Rossini, Verdi and many others. The orchestra has been conducted for many years by Runnicles. All this contributes to a total spectacle where singers, orchestra and staging delight us, amaze us at each performance.
I love this theater for the quality of the performers and the variegated musical and offer. The building is a very nice example of rational modern art. A must for everyone loves music.
Pleasantly surprised by the excellent service of the ticket office.I had to cancel a ticket due to covid and called the number on the website which was occupied all the time. I wrote an email and to my surprise I received a call from the ticket office. A very pleasant ticket officer immediately fixed everything for me. He cancelled one ticket, resent me the valid ticket and arranged the refund.Such excellent service is rare these days! Well done Deutsche Oper Berlin! Vielen Dank!
Excellent opera house with fantastic food and beverage facilities.
Its always difficult to comprehend the transport system in Berlin. And that has helped people positively because if you want to understand the transportation system in Berlin you must be a Geographer. You must know how to study the maps. One thing is sure that once you follow your map you will get to your destination.
The German Berlin Opera has always been good to this day with a horrible "Meistersinger" backdrop and terrible singers, unfortunately for a Premiere"
Amazing performance of Madame Butterfly. The seats and plazas are well organized so that everyone can hear and see. The Stadt Opera was selling seats where you can only hear and not see... Such a disgrace 😂Though the seats look old (or they paid for cheap seats that are not that comfy), the rest of the building is modern and they have plenty of bars where to get food and drinks between acts, without feeling like the place is crowded.
One of the most famous Opera Houses in Europe. And that was also to see in the production I visited. Weltklasse!😊🎶
I saw Wagners Parsifal here. What an exquisite performance! Bravi tutti!
Great sounds quality , halls do not look luxury nor modern.
I am fascinated - I’m loosing my mind.I come here ever now and then and every now and then I am blown away by the artificial magnitude of the present shows. So in order to specify the review here I want to sort my points properly:1. The shows:The shows that take place here are of extraordinary quality and outstanding artistic performance2. The service:The service, no matter if on the telephone, the counter, or other staff, is just extremely polite and friendly3. The building and atmosphereCompared to Staatsoper Berlin the building of Deutsche Oper cannot sparkle with esthetics. Though throughout the time I recognize that the building has something to it - it feels comfortable, more cozy in some ways.Particularly I want to praise the last show I have seen: Die Walküre. This might have been the best musical performance I have experienced.
Nice. Small enough for everyone to enjoy the show and big enough not to be noisy. Several floors layer the public and help social distancing. You can find several bouffetes and restrooms to save traveling time and queues during the break. Halls do not look luxury nor modern (like in Vein or Hamburg).
Wagner symphony was amazing
An excellent all-round experience in a very good music hall. Try to get tickets in the front or the cheaper ones in the third Parkett as the ones that are in between have the acoustics hindered by the low ceiling that the upper Parkett makes over the last seats of the first floor.
Great theatre great cast and music! But the “concept” of the stage direction 😳 of Gotterdammrung 🤔 no clue
The acoustics are splendid and the seats really comfortable. Which is important when watching a 6-7 hour performance. The building might not look like much from the outside but believe me when I say that magic is happening in this place!
Enjoyed the opera as well as the food and drinks during breaks. Wow Wagner music.. Quality of sound perfect. Love the friendly service
The experience was good but the staff is quite rude. We wanted to keep our coats and bags with us but we were strongly encouraged to leave them at the reception area even though we politely declined.
Its wonderful!! Sounds was really nice and we could enjoy every moments :)Also the building is front of train station(U2 Deutsche Oper)!!
Great operahouse, great service and facility.
A beautiful, modern place to see opera both traditional and contemporary. Nicely organized building. Great orchestra, and world class singers.
Fantastic place, good chairs, great show
Old building with a special kind of charm. Actors and musicians are very good. Only 1 star minus for understaffed bar in the break and partially old Technic in the lightning system.
Perhaps my favourite opera house in the whole world. I love it’s vintage modern style. It’s huge inside with plenty of room to walk around, doesn’t feel like a metro station as in the ROH, for example. Productions are generally of very high quality. Seats are comfy and every member of the public gets to see properly. Acoustics is decent from everywhere. Quite the perfect opera house, in my view.
Such a beautiful building! Had a great time.
A modern take on opera. They always manage to surprise opera-goers. Easily accessible location.
The rough edge looking on the building from outside might not be for everyone but the minimalist interior design is just splendid. All kinds of great operas and ballets are shown throughout the year. Check their website for more details.
This is the best Opera/ballet house in Berlin. The building itself, built by a German architect Fritz Bornemann, is a must-see.The sound is superb, the repertoire is very impressive. Ive seen many operas there, such as Turandot, Tosca, Boris Godunov etc, classical ballets, and some contemporary ones as well, like Schneewittchen by Angelin Preljocaj (saw it twice), Ballet for Life by Maurice Béjart etc.Everyone who is somehow interested in classical events, should visit this place and enjoy their productions.
Great opera. My wife and I enjoyed the world class performance Shen Yun here last night. Confortable seats, good bar, great service at the garments closet. High class performance!
Excellent performance! The acting and singing was great. There was a display of English and German text so that one can read and follow the story. I would love to see it again.
Great venue with a modern atmosphere. The staff are helpful and nice, the auditorium is well designed so most of the seats have great view of the stage. Spacious bars and long enough intervals for drinks.
Best seating arrangement.. unlike any other opera in Berlin :)
Big fan of the opera and its cheap as chips in Berlin! I try to go numerous times a year someday ill actually under stand what is going on in the opera. There is a rewe across the street where you can get much cheaper drinks in the break as well as snacks. I like going and getting chocolate for the 3rd act. Ive sat at almost all levels and colors, get a seat in the middle they are the best.
Watch an opera here and the place is organized, comfortable and beautiful. I had the back seating and the view is still good from there. Great to enjoy any show
Terrible booking experience. Their Box office Only gave discount you on 2 tickets, should have been all 4 with our 47 EU Berlin cards!! We lost 39 euros and they just offered 2 drinks compensation!Ballet good though!
Interesting 1970s-style building. The performancen was great, modern-style, actors wonderful, beautiful experience. Small capacity of toilets. Not prescribed dress code.
Very Modern building, not many toilets... Right after the performance we were shooed out it wasnt that late, the bar was closed already.. I am used to having an after drink or something. Not in this place! 👯 Acoustic was great! And I think you can see the stage from every seat so very well laid out!
A great experience. The facility works perfectly. To make the art experience more heavenly the ambient air quality should be better.
This was my first experience of opera and I must say I was blown away. The performance on the night was fantastic. This opera house is a very pleasant setting with very helpful staff. The biggest positive for me though was that the English and Italian translations were provided directly above the stage meaning that for a philistine like myself I was able to not only enjoy the performance but was able to understand it as well.
A place that lives up to its standards and its name. Often classical, but also new fresh and experimental adaptations with often world premieres. Great acoustics and interesting post modern design. Also the restaurant is worth visiting after the performance for a great meal or a wine in the presence of the artists and performance.
This is a staple of the Berlin performing arts scene. If you’re not into traditional opera, though, I would highly recommend taking advantage of any offerings from the Tischlerei or Ambushed from Behind programming. They present fascinating, new takes on traditional operas and they provide a thought-provoking night out at the theater.
What a night! Berlin has re-defined opera for me. Very lucky to have seen the acclaimed representation of "Carmen". The venue has great outdoor setting for a drink and the prices are very affordable. Will be coming again without a doubt!
First experience of a Berlin opera here. Interesting experience overall. We saw a contemporary setting of Lady Macbeth of Mzensk which suits the contemporary feel of the building. The building has nice open layers. Staff were friendly.
Really a great place for opera, old style inside but very good sound, its the most important. Well come back!
Absolute treat! Building is a bit aged and tired, but literally just a few steps from the U-bahn (metro), and both the orchestra and ensemble are amazing. Different pieces allow for different creative techniques - well worth seeing more than one opera if you have the chance. Not a lot of good options for dining nearby though.
I was watching Nabucco. It was incredible. The acoustic is incredible, the performance par excellence and the orchestra the best. The Hall is big and can accommodate many people. There is also a very nice restaurant and Caffè to take a drink or coffee at the break during the show. The prices in the bar are common. You can leave your clothes at the entrance of the Hall. Prices for the shows vary, but definitely worth it. I can only recommend.
Im frankly tired of ruined experiences at this place. The staff needs to seriously start enforcing some basic rules, like:- shut the hell up during the performances- dont take flash photos during a performance- dont applaud in the middle of a performance- dont applaud after everything, which simply ruins the mood and distracts the performersThese obnoxious behaviours seem there norm in this place, and the direction needs to put its pants on and put some rules in place such that attending performances here stops being a harduous and ruined experience.Even the cinema doesnt get as annoying!Bad Deutsche Oper, bad!
We saw Tosca and next day Il Trovatore. Great modern Opera house with top quality singers and a great ambience. Very reasonably priced.
Very Rude Service:My sister and I were leaving Berlin soon and we wanted to find a place that we could fit into our busy schedule. We decided to go to Deutsche Oper since she had grown quite fond of that particular form of art. I, also having been an architecture major and been drilled on the Bauhaus movement did not mind seeing such a building. When we had arrived the venue was quite empty and there were very few employees around. All doors were open and no one was around to guide us through the building. So we decided to look around in the hopes that we could get a glimpse of what the place was all about. We walked around for a few minutes and then headed upstairs which was obviously the entrance to hall where an event was taking place. A female worker asked us for tickets and we told her that we just wanted to see the building and it would be nice if she could guide us towards the area that is open to the public. As we were walking around, male worker, possibly the manager, came up to us and scorned us as if we were some homeless that had randomly strolled into the building. We tried to explain and told him that we did not mean to intrude. But he rudely told us to get out and walked us outside as if he was trying to quarantine the building from a plague. He walked away as quickly as he had appeared as if our presence was incredibly bothersome to him. Needless to say our benign trip to the opera house turned into such a terrible ordeal and left us feeling bad about our trip to Berlin as a whole. I understand that there is a necessity to separate the paying patrons and ensure that their experience is not negatively affected by random onlookers. But there was absolutely no Indication that the opera house was closed to visitors and the way he treated us was beyond degrading. I highly doubt that I would ever want to attend an event at this venue or suggest it to anyone else in the future.
