Former Benedictine monastery with hands-on displays of medieval art and recreated smithy workshops.
Lovely place to visit and the Abbey was rather surprising once you walk inside.
Lovely welcoming staff who are very knowledgeable about the site and exhibits. Good for school age kids to learn a bit of history about the area and farming in general. Everywhere you look there is something else to discover.
Have driven past numerous times but so glad we made a point of visiting. Dogs are welcome which is great. Fascinating buildings and a great collection.
Local farming history displays. The old house is good and sausage rolls in the cafe are excellent.
Very small, but a lovely place to visit. Staff/volunteers were friendly and helpful. Was lovely to see somewhere a bit different and that still has all the old farm machinery on display.
Really enjoyed it,,,cafe is fabulous so much history 😍
Fun day out with reenactment stories and fighting. What more can you ask for. Kept us entertained a longer that I initially thought. Loved it 😁
Lots of space, had fun in the toy shed.
Had a great day out with the Harington medieval re enacters at Denny Abbey
Great place for a half day out. Abbey and museum well worth a visit. Highly recommend the cafe for lunch. Ticket allows return visits.
We came from Essex and used our English heritage passes. Staff was so friendly, knowledgeable and kind.Play area great, everything we saw here was fantastic. Food in the cafe fair priced and delicious.Toilets clean and ample parking. We loved it. Very happy we came.
Both very intetesting. The Farmland Museum is a hidden gem! We went on a warm day, we saw lots pf young mums with children, good play area including outdoor little cars and tractors enchanting. As August there was a man there with donkeys for kids to ride at £4 each. Cafe was clean and a good menu of simple foods couldnt be better. 😊😊
Lovely for older people to reminisce and good for under 8s with play climbing things.
A great day out! English Heritage has done a superb job of both preserving and revealing the multiple histories of this rare building and site. Although there are many information boards a guide book is definitely recommended. The café serves good quality food and drink and staff are friendly and helpful. Plus there is the farm museum with fascinating insights into the history of fenland farming. When we visited, in the summer holidays, there were childrens activities which looked very well run. It was generally very busy but had the capacity to cope. A clear 5 stars!
Such an interesting place with fascinating farm museum and very nice cafe.
Had a great afternoon with two granddaughters following a trail on the Victorians.
Great place for a day-out, especially with kids. The abbey is very interesting and quite. It has a long history and many stories connected to it. The farmland part with the agricultural machinery and toys can be fun for kids. The heritage is located just off Ely road, so easily approachable by car from Ely or Cambridge. Car parking available just outside the entrance. No bike racks though, but these can be locked to the wood fence. In the ticket office there are souvenirs and other items that can be purchased for memory. Also, a small tea room and inside/outside rest rooms available for visitors. Food, drinks, ice cream, etc. can be purchased here.I can recommend.
Denny Abbey is an intriguing building. You get a sense of how it has changed over time. Some of the medieval carving is amazingly fresh-looking, because it has been covered for centuries. The farmland museum is also well worth visiting.Fun activities for children.Cafe does excellent food and cappuccino with a tractor on top!
Enjoyable day trip.Lots of vintage agricultural equipment and a nice cafe
Varied exhibits & displays .... interesting local historyLovely play area for the smaller children too
A really interesting place with many different layers of history which are visible to see.
Really interesting place to visit, seen loads of pieces which recalled my childhood! Well worth a visit.
I love taking my kids here as there are so many thoughtful little things for kids to do. My two love having a look round the little farm cottage and the whole place is secure enough to let them have a fairly long leash. There is always a trail or activity to do and I can never resist getting something from the little cafe.
Went on a very sunny day over the Jubilee and it was a great day out. You pay once but can return any time for a year as long as it is not a special event day.
A really good find. Very interesting and something for the whole family. Good value and tasty home cooked food. Allow a long half day to see everything.
The abbey/farmhouse building is very unusual. The partial removal of the farmhouse insert allows you to grasp the changes that occurred. Such a lovely farm museum with lots of childrens games and amusements. Food from cafe all excellent.
Lovely place to visit, one payment and it gives your free entry for tge year
Very interesting site. Its good value for money if youre local because tickets last for one year, so thats £6 for an adult and you can return as many times as you like in a year. Staff and volunteers were extremely friendly. Its not a full day trip, probably 2 hours if you factor in a stop at the cafe. It would be a great place to factor into a trip to Ely or nearby Wicken Fen.Its very kid friendly and theres quite a lot of learning to do if you take the time to read the information boards. Not a full day, but a really interesting visit to a unique building.
One of my favourite places, and good value too. Volunteers are great.
Lovely museum, lots of interesting countryside bygones and machinery. Homemade cakes to enjoy as well.
Nice family day out, alot of history to learn within, and a nice childrens play area, overall its a really good place to visit, will be going again
Fantastic little place. Ben driving past here on the A10 since 1987 and today 2022 have finally visited. Amazing abbey building that had in the last century been used as a farmhouse. It is now part ruin and really is something quite surreal. The farm life museum is especially interesting and well run. Good tea room too Webb amazing cakes and homemade sausage rolls . Certainly worth a visit. Its a hidden gem which cannot be seen from the road except for the entrance track and gate posts.
This was a fantastic visit. More than I thought to see here, definitely worth a visit. You wont be disappointed. Also has a lovely tearoom the cake is amazing.
The Farmland museum was interesting and locally relevant. The abbey is the stone and wood structure with information and some bits to show what some rooms were used for. Very beautiful in a well taken care of ruin kind of way. :-)
Small agriculural museum off the A10 near Waterbeach Cambridge. Parking provided. From time to time holds exhibitions and re-enactments.September 2021 was a 1940s era. Small fee to get in with an afternoon out. Money raised to help fund this little museum.
The Abbey is a fascinating piece of local history stretching over hundreds of years. When you add the cottage and the Farmland Museum, its a complete package. Perfect for all ages as theres interest for all. Top that off with a lovely, friendly, comfortable, on site tea room. Finally, the site is dog friendly too.
Very interesting place to visit with very friendly staff, we chose a brilliant day to go as we were there when they were doing a saxon battle reenactment.
Beautiful tranquil Abbey ruins well covid maintained. Good descriptions of timescale lots of information well placed. Farm museum similar lovely play area for children and an excellent cafe with shortbread tractors to die for. Staff nd volunteer polite. Well worth a visit. Xxxx
Really enjoyed this day out... good for families with educational information too. The farmland museum consists of lots of farm machinery and some rooms giving a look at the past...going back in time to a shop, wheelmaker and country cottage amongst others. There are no live animals... just to clarify! Denny Abbey is interesting... giving information on plaques of the times it has seen. There is a cafe, shop and small playground which were all enjoyed!
This place is a gem. I visited with my 2 year old and there was enough to keep us entertained for a few hours even with the Abbey closed due to Covid. The play area was great for toddlers and I loved the 2nd hand books!
I volunteer here a great place to come and contribute. The oldest house in Cambridge.
Really enjoyable visit, in October and they had a Halloween Pumpkin Trail which kept my 7yr and 5yr old children engaged with exploring the whole of the site. The Abbey was impressive with plenty of interesting features, plus with a large mock kitchen which my children enjoyed pretending to be the Abbey cook! The Farm Cottage with period features was of interest to all ages, and the house contents and unusual historic references was a particularly useful way to teach my children how the past generation lived. The site can be explored quickly, or slowly and some parts repeated like we did, spending nearly 2 hours. The gift shop sells a fanstastic guide to explain the full history of the site.Considering this was free to enter, i thought the whole experience was brilliant, and we will visit again.
An interesting mix of old farm machinery and information on methods. There was a nice example of a typical farm labourer house, and of course the old Abbey too. The staff were really friendly and very enthusiastic. Not enough to look at for a whome day, but a nice half day trip.
An English Heritage site where the history of agriculture in the England is showcased. Theres also a ruined Abbey and you can stroll inside. Make sure to visit if you are around Ely or Cambridge.
Nice place to visit, farmland museum is very interesting, the abbey itself shows some good historic items of architectural techniques. Nice little cafe.
Wasnt sure whether my boisterous 6 year old would be bored here but that was far from the truth, he loved it. There are plenty of hands on things to do, lots to see and lots to hear, in what is actually quite a small site, but it is very well laid out. The staff were friendly and helpful and the facilities were good, they do have disabled toilets but be prepared for some hard work as the ground is grass and gravel if pushing a wheelchair.
Great place to visit. Not a very large site, so dont expect to spend all day here. However there are other English Heritage and National Trust sites nearby.
Delightful place, full of history and set in a beautiful location. The volunteers are friendly and helpful and the layout of the place is such that it is very easy to visit at a very leisurely pace. Usually, when the coffee shop is open you can have refreshments but when it is closed the little gift shop also offers a reasonable selection of drinks and ice cream. Check times and events beforehand so not to be disappointed as activities are varied. A lovely place where to spend the day, reasonable entry fee. Recommended.
It was okay, a good visit for a couple of hours, but it is looking a bit tired around the edges
A fascinating place steeped in history. Well off the well trodden track of most weekend archaeologists but well worth a visit. Over a 1,000 years in the making. Denny Abbey has a lot to offer the intrepid explorer.
