200 Calle Sol, San Juan, 00901, Puerto Rico, San Juan
Deaverdura - Puerto Rican restaurant in San Juan, Puerto Rico
Amazing food. Not a tourist trap. Real Puerto Rican food at reasonable prices. Highly recommend!
Sat down. Male waiter ran through the menu so fast I didn’t understand a darn thing and I’m from Colombia and Spanish is my first language. He did not know what a Simple Vodka Soda was and didn’t know what sparkling wine was?! His “boss” I assume had to show him where the Prosecco was! Our food arrived cold and when I asked for butter, salt and pepper he pointed to a sauce on the table he said just add that🤷🏻🤦🏻 Yeah, one of the worst places I’ve ever eaten. He literally came to our table twice. The rest of the time I had to go to the bar and ask him for stuff. DON’T EAT HERE!
We saw the reviews and thought it would be great. Rude service and cold food. DO NOT recommend. All we wanted was authentic Puerto Rican food and we were so disappointed. Avoid this place at all costs.
I’ve eaten puertorican food at restaurants all over the island and I can say without a doubt this has been the best. Their arroz con gandules was phenomenal and the pernil was exquisite, beyond comprehension even. Teresa and crew there were brilliant with their level of service as well. 10/10 as good as grandma’s down in Ponce.
Natiliana was awesome waitress she was very attentive to us and the food was great and the price to match a must try for authentic Puerto Rican food. They also have coconuts.
Best place to eat in Puerto Rico, hands down. I regret not taking more pictures but just know that we went twice and wanted to go back on Sunday but they were closed. First time we got the churrasco with the yellow rice and it was amazing. Went back and tried the Puerto Rican sampler and it was to die for. Only recommendation is to get an extra side of rice because it’s that good. The Juice with rum is also a must.
The food is as questionable as the character of the servers that attended to us. Puerto Rico has a lot to offer especially in terms of food. Do yourself a favor and avoid this place at all cost.
Heard good reviews but thoroughly not impressed. The service here is really bad. Considering that they only have few tables, and not so busy as well, the bad service is really unjustifiable. The wait time is crazy. We were outside for 30 mins and there are empty tables. The waitress only came by once to take our order. She even forgot the coconut water and hot sauce that Ive asked. And at the end of the night, totally just gave up giving us service. The other guy had to give us our check as the original one just ignored us.Food is also not great. I had the Grouper fish, and it is obviously frozen fish. A bit bland too.
Delicious food, friendly service, and cheerful vibes. We ordered pasteles (like tamales but with plantains instead of masa), amarillos (fluffy, fried plantain), mofongo (like mashed potatoes but with plantains or yuca), grilled chicken, and rice and beans. A delicious, authentic Puerto Rican meal.
Run, don’t walk, to this spot!! This may have been my favorite Caribbean restaurant that we went to. The food is out of this world authentic & good!! We got the sampler wit skirt steak added & everything on it was to die for. Great way to taste a little bit of everything and it was so much food! Did not leave here hungry at all! We also got the rum with passion fruit juice and it was refreshing & tasty :)
About a 20 minute wait to get in as everything is homemade, but SOOOO worth the wait. We got the Puerto Rican sampler and it was beyond delicious. Be warned, you have to wait outside until youre called inside. Do NOT seat yourself. Highly recommend this place 8t youre looking for genuine Puerto Rican homemade food.
Wonderful little place. Very friendly. Authentic PR food done well. Highly recommend the sampler platter for lunch!
I really loved this place! My waiter seemed to be genuinely excited to have me experience Puerto Rican cuisine. Service was attentive without being intrusive. Atmosphere is relaxed and inviting. The food is simply AMAZING! They have a sampler plate that was plenty for two, they even customized ours since my wife doesnt eat pork. Highly recommended!
Was so good we came back two days later! The server was cutting the coconut right in front of us with a machete lol. Must get: the strip steak (churasscowith arroz con grandules, and the puerto rican sampler
We showed up unannounced on a quiet weekday afternoon, party of 9. They were very accommodating despite the larger table request for a cozy restaurant. The food was typical cuisine of PR and it did not disappoint! Loved every bite and will be happy to visit again in the future.
Sooooooo delicious! 😍 I definitely recommend the platter you get a little bit of everything that you need to satisfy your craving for authentic Puerto Rican food 😋
Our first stop when visiting Old San Juan. We arrived right when they opened and were seated immediately; after about 15 minutes the place immediately filled up and people started to need to wait. It small, but cozy, on the inside with a very friendly and helpful staff. This was also my first time having coconut water right from the coconut. We ordered the sampler which easily fed two people, and experienced a wide variety of Puerto Rican food. There are a lot of places I would like to eat at, so Im not sure I would return, but I would recommend people go here at least once when they visit the city.
The worst restaurant in San Juan. First a long line to get in. You wait for very long to get your order. We ordered fried chicken, chicken breast and fish with Puertorican rice. The Puertorican rice was ok, but the fried chicken was awful and a way too dry. The chicken breast was awful and with no flavor. The worst of the worst, a human hair on the chicken. Disgusting 🤢 Couldn’t eat any more, even though I was starving. We ordered fresh juice. The pineapple was good, the passion fruit was ok, but the coconut was sooooo badSuper disappointing and would not recommend to anyone.!
Found this place on google! Wow! It was so delicious :The food was authentic and fresh !!I came back twice !! We had the pork with arroz con candules the first time then the Puerto Rican sampler the 2nd day. The alcapurrias, bacalaitos, and pork had to be my favorites 🤗
Sooo delicious!! Generous portions and great prices. We went on a day it was pretty busy and didn’t wait long at all for our food. Our server was great, will definitely be coming back.
The thing is the servers are rude and ignore you until they deign to notice you waiting outside in the hot sun behind a chain baring entry. One server was right next to me without even acknowledging. So was it busy you are wondering? No. There were tables available and it was between lunch and dinner times. If we hadnt walked 20 mins to get there perhaps Id have just turned around right there, but my stomach wasnt as offended as my ego so...And yes the food was good. Worth the admittance annoyance? Meh.
TL;DR: Honestly, kind of depressing. The kitchen is doing good work but the front of house is horrendous.Service: The service is horrible and definitely why the rating is low. They dont have a real menu. The server just shouted it to us and said the menu on the wall was wrong... Then update it!!! Its a chalk wall! Just erase it and write the current menu.If it wasnt for the woman Leanne, the front of house would collapse. Our server (malewas horrible. He took forever to come over (so long that some tables just got up and left with no service whatsoever). When he did finally take our drink orders, he brought it from the bar, spilled it all over our table (which is fine. Accidents happenand proceeded to act like nothing happened and walked away. I called for him and asked that he at least give us some napkins to clean up his mess. He seemed a bit annoyed by this but brought us 3 napkins. After placing our orders, he never came back. The woman, Leanne, went and got our food for him. Unfortunately, it had sat in the window for a while and it was cold. Since this poor woman is doing everything, food sitting in the window was common. The food in the window in the attached picture sat for 10 minutes before anyone grabbed it.Bottom line, the guy who served us was horrible and hardly helped the woman. She was practically the only person working the front of house. I felt bad for her.The guy server was very good at appearing busy while doing nothing at all, which is a shame. Food shouldnt be going cold in the window and customers shouldnt be walking out because theyre not getting served. As I type this, weve waited 20 minutes for our bill that we asked for. Were about tempted to just leave since theyre not even bringing us our ticket... This place is horribly run. Worst service Ive ever seen at a restaurant.Food:Pastelillo (vegetarian- The pastelillo had a mild but good taste. But the bean soup was really good.Pastelillo (chicken- This had a nice taste, coupled with the yellow rice and peas. It definitely felt a bit more authentic than surrounding restaurants.Drinks:Juice and Rum (tamarind- Its just tamarind juice mixed with some random rum. It was ok. Not a great cocktail. Dont expect too much.Juice and Rum (Caribbean Cherry- Just like above. Just cherry juice with rum.
So effin good. Show service but its super busy when I went for lunch. Ordered the sampler and it was enough for the people. That rice & beans ,cod fish fritters, steak, plantains all fried to perfection. Drink was good too. They have coconuts to drink from
Down to earth, amazing food, and amazing service. I cant say one bad thing about this restaurant. Truly great. Make sure you get a fresh coconut with rum while you wait for your food. Worth.It. TRY EVERYTHING.
Very unique and fun. There was always a line for this place. It was well worth the wait. Staff was very helpful since they dont give you a menu.
Food was fresh and delicious! Service was great! Definitely recommend to anyone who is looking for authentic Puerto Rican/ Latin food!
Great food and low prices. None of the main courses exceeded around 15 dollars and the food was absolutely amazing! Skirt steak and the grouper were some of the best I had in Puerto Rico however the menu changes daily with no set dishes. With the food being so good there is normally a substantial wait as the restaurant is on the smaller side, the food is definitely worth it however!
BEST PUERTO RICAN FOOD IN TOWN. My wife and I went to Puerto Rico for 5 days and ate at this place 2 times because there wasn’t any other place like this. I would give them 10 stars if I could, just note that you may need to wait 5-10mins outside but it is 100% worth it. As soon as we sat down you could see everybody enjoying their food, even some taking shots with the staff of the place (never seen this before, but it was awesome). On the first day we tried the Puertorrican sampler, and we absolutely loved everything, 2nd time my wife ordered the Pernil con arroz and she couldn’t stop eating it, I had the Pork Stuffed sweet plantain and WOW. The prices were really good as well, definitely not a tourist trap like most of the places in Old San Juan. I’m going to stop here, if you are still reading this I hope you are on your way there. Cheers!
During dinner there was a long wait outside with a small staff so you weren’t sure if you were supposed to wait and how long it would take but I would say it’s well worth it to wait. The menu is simple and we got the Puerto Rican platter which has all the tradition food that was very good. Atmosphere was great too, the small staff there was very friendly but definitely busy.
Delicious Puerto Rican food in a no frills atmosphere. The rice and beans and local white fish were amazing and so was the cassava/taro/malanga mofongo. I also enjoyed the breadfruit tostones though they needed a squeeze of lime. I would definitely skip out on the pasteles or taro tamales. Many people around us got the sampler plate but they missed out on the most tender and flaky fish. We also got the bistec and the camarones. The camarones were just ok, the meat was skirt steak which was a nice unexpected surprise. Unfortunately, they dont take reservations so we had to wait on line outside for about 40 minutes. Be sure you get there before 7pm on a Monday if you want to be seated bc there arent many restaurants open in VSJ on Mondays. Also they might run out food as the night wears on so keep that in mind. I was very sad that we didnt get to try the pernil. I took off a star because I found the food a little salty and in need of sauce. But the staff was very lovely and the fruit juices helped round out our meal.
The service was excellent. This is a great place to start your food journey if youve never had Puerto Rican/Spanish food. Our food was a little salty but still good. The fresh coconut water is the icing on the cake.
First stop in Old San Juan and could not have picked a better spot. We were greeted with a smile and had the entire menu explained to us-it all sounded amazing! We ordered coconuts with rum for a drink and got the sampler platter. The sampler platter was perfect for the two of us and had everything you could ask for-pernil, arroz con grandules, etc. Definitely stop here!
Delicious food in old San Juan. They will make you wait for your food but it’s definitely worth it
Right now theres no menu, probably due to covid. Just a traditional platter and a sampler. I had the platter with pernil, rice, beans, maduros, and an after thought of a salad. Lets be honest though, you dont care about the shrubbery at a place like this. The pork was cooked to perfection, as were the beans. The rice soaks up all the juice from both and together, the flavors remind you of home. Combine that with super friendly service and prices that are less than a combo at McDonalds, and you have to wonder, hows this place not packed, always. Until you realize that it is and youre eating all the right things. Definitely will be back.
A tasty meal with wonderful service! I have celiac disease and the owner was able to accommodate my food restriction easily. I enjoyed how fresh the ingredients were, and getting to try traditional dishes!
Amazing food!!! The fresh juices were out of this world! Well worth the wait. Staff was so friendly and the Puerto Rican sampler was 10 out of 10
I wish I ate here on my first night in San Juan, not my last. My wife is Puerto Rican and I have had a lot of hers and her familys cooking. This place is as good if not better. Eat here if you can, the fish and pork were amazing.
Amazing authentic Puerto Rican food! Worth the wait (and trust me, there will be a wait!wonderful service, drinks are delicious, food is phenomenal. Get the Puerto Rican Sampler!
Long wait outside because the staff is pretty small but well worth it. Loved the Puerto Rican sampler and shrimp. Fresh juices were a little outside our comfort zone but may be worth a try just because
“Food was just okay” is what she said. The sampler platter had good flavor but was room temperature for all items except the tostones which were actually some of the best I’ve had. The waiter wasn’t interested in being friendly but thank goodness there was a young lady waitress and another gentleman that were both very friendly and welcoming. The Dulce de leche dessert was awful. I had no idea what it was because I’ve had this dessert before and what they served didn’t look or taste like anything that should be served. The flan dessert at least looked like flan but was dry. It was an authentic experience with a few really good items and a few really bad ones. The hospitality was mixed. For these reasons it’s an okay place for maybe a quick bite and a beer but not a solid meal. I wanted to give it 3 stars but as I wrote this I realized that would not be accurate. I hope the owners read this and make adjustments, their reviews are exceptional which drew us in and the setting is quaint.
The food was excellent and the servers were extremely kind and attentive. Everything on the sampler platter was amazing and the waiter explained all the food to us, was enough food for two people. I suggest ordering the sampler. Their drinks were also great, unique beers and nice fruit juice and rum. There was a wait to get in, but this was only because every table was full. I was seated in about 20 minutes at peak lunch time and it was worth the wait.
The food is absolutely amazing though the portion was a bit small. The price was right but service was terrible. I stood there for a long time and no one noticed. I ordered more food and it never came until I asked again. But in terms of quality of food, it’s better than those restaurants that have big names. This one is underrated but the best food I had thus far in San Juan! But don’t expect good service.
the food by god the best in old San Juan. Unfortunately slow service, I was 25 minutes waiting for my drink order to be taken. The place is small and cozy, it deserves to return despite the slow service. The sampler is really good.
This place came highly recommended by locals in the area (we were staying nearby), so we were excited to try. We waited over an hour to be seated, which we thought was an indication as to how good the food was. Little did we know they were holding the space for a reservation of 15. They failed to tell us this, also they do not take reservations but somehow this group was allowed to. We finally got in and had to share the table with another couple in order to eat. This was fine, and we were grateful one of them was born and raised in PR. We ordered the pernil (porkand it was so salty it was impossible to eat. If I’m being completely honest it was DISGUSTING. I woke up the next day completely swollen from all of the salt intake. I would be willing to give this place another go, perhaps they were in a rush to service the larger group then us. But I am sad to say it was a huge disappointment.
Delicious and so cozy! The waiters are super nice and welcoming. Order yellow rice with beans (Puerto Rico style). You wont regret! I had churrasco and mofongo. Amazing!
While visiting Old San Juan we like to try new places with good reviews, so we decided to give this one a try. We went in for lunch, the staff was very polite and followed their health guidelines closely: capacity, sanitizing, and space between tables, its a reassuring experience. We had an appetizer, morcilla, a couple of entrees, pulled pork and beef steak with onions, plus a couple of drinks, a local beer, Medalla, and a Don Q Rum with Passion fruit juice. I would definitely recommend you try el majado (mashed viandasand the side of veggies (these are sauteed and delicious). Oh! And try the hots sauce too, it has a homemade feel, great flavor, and subtle kick, I couldnt get enough of it!
We visited twice in the same day because it was really good! They dont have a written menu but they have great Puerto Rican food and really good service. We had pork and bistec with onions with fried and sweet plantains and beans and rice as sides.Everything was very good.
So far best food for me in Puerto Rico. Because everything is fried in this state. Bistec encebollado is very juicy and tasteful. Their home made hot sauce made with mangos, peppers and cilantro is the bomb. Service is slow but it is totally worth. They have no menu and no prices. Weird but affordable. Like google said it is only $. You wont be disappointed here. Give them a shot.
This place is short staff so please be patient. It is definitely worth the wait. I went 2 days in a row. Both server were awesome! Food was amazing! Budget friendly! 4 people cost under $70. Nice size portions and flavorful. I look forward to visiting again next time I travel to Old San Juan.
This place was homey. I love it. Very chill vibe. The food was awesome. We went here on a tour and this spot was definitely well visited by many. Stop in for their food. The bartender will be great as well!
