De Mond Nature Reserve in Hermanus
Description
Privilege
Lovely spot to picnic. Good trails to the beach or up the river.
Great spot, lively views, spectacular, clean beach. We walked the 7k circular route. Doesnt require high fitness and really a lovely, peaceful experience. Enjoyed the beach walk after the bush. Only snag was that its easy to get lost from the beach to the path back to reception. We had to call for a little assistance. Finished off by going up to the lookout point. Great experience for my family and I.
MoreWow,wow, wow - what a hidden gem. Completed the Sterna Trail and felt so privileged to walk along this sea shore for kilometers, hearing and seeing whales breaching, watching sea gulls and cormorants - idyllic!
MoreBeautiful coastal nature reserve. 15km hike to Arniston or Struisbaai. Awesome beaches with many special shells. You can also fish here.
MoreWe went on a wonderful hike through fynbos and along the coast. Untouched, beautiful nature. Especially recommended for birders.
MoreNice Nature Reserve for hikes, watching seals, beach walks and fishing. Beautiful colours in plants, flowers and sea weed. We saw a whale, drying out. Stranded in October 2021.
MoreOnly for those who love solitude & a day out including a 3 km walk to reach the beach.Wide open spaces. Escape from everything that reminds you of sivilization.

MoreNice walk through fynbos, dunes and along the river and beach.
A must for the nature lover. Absolutely beautiful. Well kept and reserved. Stunning lookout points. Employees very helpfull. Will definately visit again.
MoreBreathtaking... 💕. We found a washed up whale on the beach which made the walk to the beach very rewarding. Also walked up to the lookout point for a birds eye view
MoreA beautiful nature reserve.Great facilities. Friendly and helpful staff. Lots to do and see.BUT, be prepared for at least a 30-40 min drive on the gravel road to get there. There are 2 x gravel roads to the reserve, approximately both the same distance. Choosing which one, Depends on your itinerary .Approx 2.5 hours from Cape Town.
MoreBeautiful place... But I witnessed guys 4x4 on the dunes when I questioned about it I was told something about the previous owners of the land and they been doing it all the years...
MoreOn the website it states you can braai with gas but upon arrivel they said its not allowed, that was disapointing but for the place itself very nice
MoreStunning picnic venue. Fabulous for fishing. Beautiful world heritage sight
such a beautiful place ...
Lovely picnic area under milkwoods right on the river. Met a few tortoises. Alot of fishing opportunities available. Walkways to the ocean and next to the river. Gorgeous place. Toilet facilities available. Accomodation available close by.
MoreExceptional place. Friendly staff and good facilities.
Absolutely breathtaking... If you can either one way or the other, walk the wild beach from De Mond to Struisbaai, take enough water to drink, a long walk but you will not regret it at all if you love fauna and flora...if youre lucky you might find Nautilus shells...start the walk early morning...
MoreAwesome place! Great for a quick weekend get away. Great fishing as well
Great place to visit with the family
Free entrance with the San parks Wild Card. If you dont have a Wild Card R50 gets you into your private piece of nature. No disturbance from human sounds. Just peace with nature and birds. Climb up to the viewpoint to contemplate and soak in the stunning Vista.
MoreFriendly and helpful Cape Nature staff. Beautiful board walks and well maintained amenities. Special place with excellent views and good fishing. I only saw anglers bait fishing for Cob and Grunter but next time I will bring my fly rod and flog the water a bit.
MoreHave been here 3 times now and it never disappoints. Its always empty so you have the whole place to yourself usually. Wonderful nature walks and great beaches . Also plenty of picnic spots .
MoreNice place to fish an have a picnic with the family
Amazing tranquil spot with lovely walks. Did the 7km circular route which takes you through stunning Buchu rich Strandveld Fynbos. The 10km walk to Arniston also worth while.
MoreBeautiful place, lovely day out with the kids. Interesting aquatic life. Hermet crabs and fish comes up close to shore and many other sea creatures.

MoreStunning & Beautiful, especially in the summer! The sand turns black when you step on it in the water... it is the funniest feeling.

MoreStunning place to fish. Staff are friendly and helpful, and very clean and well maintained.
MoreWhat a beautiful destination, serene
WOW! Some amazingly beautiful scenery, and a few very decent hikes that you can do within a day. Just a warning - dont try and cross the river near the ocean when the tide is going out :)
MoreDe Mond Nature Reserve is a secret hide away just waiting for you to discover. We accidentally stumbled upon this beautiful nature reserve during a week’s day when all was very quiet. It was a quite windy but we still enjoyed our walk on the hang bridge across the river and all the way towards the river mouth with the boardwalk. We saw many water birds which are always a treat. Pack a picnic basket, park yourself under the shade of a big tree and enjoy nature to its fullest.
MoreAbsolutely beautiful. A fantastic place to unwind. Hardly any cell phone signal, a beautiful beach, a lovely little cottage and just the sound of the ocean to accompany you.
MoreGreetings. About De Mond Nature Reserve, as a first-time visitor : lovely place, a pity about the poor signboarding. From Agulhas, this gem of a reserve is +- 18 km away. Look out for a signboard that says "Arniston". At the signboard turn RIGHT, onto a gravel road. Continue on this gravel road for 7 km. Once you reach a T-junction, turn RIGHT. At the T-junction there will be a sign that says "Die Mond". Proceed on the second gravel road for 9 km. Leave your vehicle at the gate and continue on foot. A beautiful reserve with unspoilt white sand beaches.
MoreThis nature reserve is so beautiful! First you walk through beautifully green vegetation, then you arrive on donne dunes before arriving on the beach. There some people are fishing. Then have a swim in the lagoon before leaving. The water is lovely. Went there in January
MoreFantastic, quiet place, amazing beach without anybody :)
Very peaceful and the people are friendly.
Great place for a picnic. The walk is a must. In spring the flowers are out which makes it even better. Also a good spot for fly fishing.
MoreYou basically have two trail options: (1a short (1.5 km there and 1.5 km backwalk from the entry to the beach and back (for this one, turn left after you cross the bridge), or (2a longer (6.5 kmcircular trail -- the Sterna Trail (for this one, turn right after you cross the bridge). We did the longer one, which would have been fine for all physically fit people, but we had one elderly person with us for whom it was just too much (although 3 young children, including a 6-year old, made it no problem). It was slow going due to our limiting factor (the elderly person), so the whole walk took us nearly 3 hours, although otherwise, we should normally have been able to make it back within 1.5-2 hours. It involves climbing up and down sand dunes at some points, and walking quite some distance (at least 2 kmalong the beach, before hitting the river and heading back up toward the entrance (which is basically the short route). All in all, though, its definitely worth seeing -- the inland vegetation is great, and the views from the beach and along the river are very nice.
MoreGood hiking, fishing and site seeing. Comfortable shoes, sunhat, sunglasses and sunscreen are a must in Summer. During the winter months , the weather can change rapidly, therefore its always a good idea to have warm, dry clothes with you.
