Museum showing a Victorian steam engine used for reclamation, with a 12-ft. wide tank, plus tearoom.
A fascinating place and a true wonder to see! We truly enjoyed our guides to the museum, who were happy to show us demo on The Machine and explain its functionality. You should time your arrival at least an hour before the closing time.
After years of living in Haarlemmermeer I finally visited this wonderful museum on the making of Haarlemmermeer. Loved it, especially the demo 🙏
Fun, informative and it was great to see the demo of the actual steam engine pumping water
Wonderful - we visited with 3 young children and we all had a fantastic time. A very personal tour was given which our eldest son who is 6 loved - he even got to press the buttons which start the main pump. The employees are very passionate and kind. A fantastic 2 hours
Great staat that manage this historic location. They are all knowledgeable and enjoy speaking about how this facility worked.
Fun place, lots of iron and steel. Its really an interesting place to visit for those who like to see how golden ages engineering is still amazing.
Great museum, amazing staff. Thisbplace should be on tourist maps!
Very interesting place to visit.
Extremely interesting museum about the drainage of the Haarlemmermeer in the pump station that made it happen. Very well presented, the pump from 1850s (also the largest Cornish engine in the worldis still in function for showcase.
Overpriced! 25 Euro for 2 adults and a 5 year old? For whats essentially a room with a few diaplays and the only thing worth seeing - the old pump.
Old steam waterworks keeping Holland dry
Amazing! Really interesting place to visit and a great cafe next door.
Fantastic place to visit with a passionate guided tour and also a working demonstration
Interesting museum with fascinating machines and proof of the inventivity of humanity. Also the ties with England through industry and fuel bonds. Well explained by the guide.
Exciting place. There are some examples of historical steam powered machines and the most important exhibit - huge water pump that was powered by steam. Its a masterpiece of engineering. What amazed me the most is that it still works. Of course nowadays the mechanism is driven by electric motors but its still looks amazing and even frighteningly. Thanks a lot for the tour and demonstration.
Very nice 👌 also for children. The machines are working
Small but beautiful museum! Friendly staff.. they show you how the machines used to work (not with steam like before but still. Great to see! For the smaller kids they have a so called speurtocht which was really nice for them (5 and 6 years old). Next to the museum is a recovery place to eat and drink (theehuis). Free parking too
Fantastic museum with very friendly staff eager to show the working pumps
Great piece of history and awesome machinery. Check website for tour guide schedule.
This is high-tech from the industrial revolution. The machine is made with love and now threaten as it should in the days of retirement.
Very interesting museum. Youll learn how the Dutch pumped dry a huge inner sea in the 1800s and reclaimed a vast area of land. The old machinery is demonstrated for visitors by the very helpful museum guides and its very impressive to see it all come to life. Amazing to realize that Amsterdam a.o. towns wouldve vanished completely if it hadnt been for steam pumping stations such as these. The museum is OPEN by the way, despite maps saying its temporarily closed. You do need to reserve.
Very good. Didnt expect to see all those old engines in action.
A masterpiece of Dutch enginuity. The installation replaced several windmills to keep Haarlemmermeer dry.
An old pumping Station to reclaim the surrounding areas making it suitable for agriculture. The adjoining restaurant is awesome & above all the owner of this restaurant is a very nice, humble, cordial & elegant lady.
Excellent engineering for 1800s. On Sunday there is a small tour with actors (in Dutch), and the pump is activated (normally now with electric motorand small tour is given like 30 min. Before 12 min movie about the Dutch problems with water and how did they fix it. Nice map of NL with zones of lakes that were fluded regularly.
Its a nice place where you can learn some history of Holland. I understood that every Sunday they will have a small theatrical act, especially for children.
Very friendly, knowledgeable and informative staff. I really enjoyed my visit. Engine and boiler house is transformed into the museum and many local exhibits are on show. Take time to read up on the history, if you flew into Schipol Airport you landed on what was once Marsh recovered by this engine and two more like it. Fasinating to watch this eight beam engine, its like a spider exercising.
Pretty cool place that they even trabslatet the history to norwegian for me and talked english definetly worth to have a trip to there🤩🤩
A bit far from Amsterdam, need to drive or catch one of the buses to get here. Its a technology museum. Worth a visit to see the history of Holland, but the castle like appearance of the building provides a picturesque photographic opportunities here. Theres even a water canal whereby boats go pass at times. Also good for photoshoot. Theres a garden at the lower area to view the beautiful scenery.
Incredible part of the Dutch polder history. Well conserved and beautiful surroundings
If your a mechanical geek you need to see this and listen to the knowledgeable and friendly tour guide. This place is incredible let for the shear engineering feat that it was for the late 1800s. And such a beautiful easy bike ride from the train station with low traffic
Always have to like the biggest of anything. Some of the other displays are quite interesting too.
How Holland was built... Thats very nicely told in this engineer dream of a museum. It houses the largest steam engine ever built and the introductory animation film is a funny relic of the 1960s.
Nice Technology museum. Impressive steam engine. Unfortunately the steam engine has been decommissioned, but for demonstration purposes the pumps are electrically powered, which gives a good impression of the awesome water displacement capacity of this marvel of the beginning of the steam-powered chapter of our industrial age
Interesting Piece of Dutch history impressivly explained by a massive, still working, steam powered water pumping facility. Although it works just for demonstration and no longer with real Steam.
Great museum about the Dutch way to get more space.Beautiful early industrial building, one of the few in the Netherlands
Interesting museum with a great story to tell for Dutch history. A lot of passionate guys there to share the story as they maintain the machines and space
Brilliantly well preserved steam pump station which was used to drain the great haarlem lake. An animation film explains the events leading upto the formation of great lake and factors which led to the decision of draining the lake. This is one of the largest cylinder steam engine which is also a mechanical marvel in itself.a ftiendly volunteer guide shows you the working of the entire facility. Dont miss this and yeah try ice cream macaroon in the cafe nearby.
Historical piece of important Dutch technology. Staff is very friendly and museum interesting, especially a demonstration. Ask for informational text in various languages.
Stunning piece of technology, created in the mid-nineteen century in England. The pumping station is crafted beautifully, with great attention to details and many lovely embroidered elements across the giant balancing arms. Three such stations pumped Haarlemmermeer in three years and three months. Sometimes, they have little theatrical shows, involving Nicholas Kruik and various characters from 1850 and 1750.
Really interesting museum for those interested in old machines and keeping water out from Netherlands. Highly recommended!
Seriously cool place! I recommend not taking a tour so you get to explore the history yourself.
The place is very interesting - the guides were enthusiastic, its nice to see the pumps still working. Staff is friendly and open-minded for any questions. The history of how Holland came to be and how they got rid of the water is great, and the opening animation is nice
Great to see the history of how the Dutch got the water out of one of the biggest lakes in Holland. Admission is free with the Museumkaart.
The Cruquius is a nice museum with proud and friendly staff that do their best to fill you in on this historic monument. The only slightly negative part is if you just want to look around the employees enthusiasm can be a little tiresome. However, it depends what you like when you go to a museum.
Amazing to see steam engine still moving. Nice volunteer tour guides. Love the introduction animation.
Gigantic steam pump. Used to clear the water out of the Haarlemmermeer. Good guided tours
The family loved it! What a good example of Dutch engineering. There are some hands-on stuff too.
Really interesting and well made exhibition.Really shows the engineering skills needed for the draining.
Important pump in Dutch history. Amazing piece of machinery. The museum is interactive and gives a good impression of the Dutch fight against the water. If you are interested in steam engines you should definitely go here.
