Daugavpils Fortress - Fortress in Daugavpils, Latvia
A nineteenth century bastion fort, reasonably well preserved. The kronwerks now house a prison, while the fortress proper a mix of museums, ruins, and residential buildings. The main attraction is the Mark Rothko centre, which is worth a visit if you like modern art.Entrance to the fort itself is free, all the museums have their own billing system.
Enjoy walk. So cool place many places are open to Public now. Buildings get renewed. Breath history.
Nice place to visit
Much work to do yet. Good luck!
It is a really huge fortified town. Youll need a half an hour just to walk it throw and around it. And it is interesting. I was there on Monday and no museum nor gallery was working so I could not say anything about it
Had guide lovely experience, thank you was very interesting hear about bats, and good bit history, super walk , kids liked white horse ghost. Brilliant expirience
Beautiful place with long history and historical buildings. There are 4 or more museums. 🪖💥
Overvalued due to Marko Rothko Art center. Many building not renovated and are in miserable conditions. The Police and Government Archive very well renovated. Much place to walk.
One of "must do" things in Daugavpils.Visit Art center of Rothko, walk through the fortress walls, basements and the district itself.
Still renovation ongoing, some exhibitions. Enjoyable place when in Daugavpils.
Amazing, incredibly huge complex. Shame not developed into a tourist object fully, but still good due to its size, nature and history.
Aside the massive and quite beautiful door, the fortress is not very interesting. I was confused to see some russian-style buildings inside the fortress, I was expecting more historic buildings and things to see.
Amazing old area of militaries (from beginning of 19th century), huge territory. Buildings are partially renovated, only a few. Minus was that there are no signs where is what located, where are the most famous places like Rothko art Center. One have to discover himself. There are no explanatory signs with history information unfortunately. We read before in visitdaugavpils site, it was good. Place was almost empty in November Sunday day.
Interesting that 1000 peaople are still living there. Theres is small micro village. Rotko was close in Monday, but must see is you are there!
interesting city to visit but very sad atmosphere there since all the buildings are left after all Soviet times and it looks like a city-ghost
Neat place, if you’re going to the Rothko art centre, obviously have a walk here too. Overall I think the whole place could use some more restoration, and addition of tourist attractions, but very nice.
Nice place to visit,
I was there in July 2019, early evening. It is impressive. Lots of walking! Unfortunately the Marko Rothko exhibition was closed for a few day. I need to go again.
Amazing place, so rich in history and somehow stuck in time! Its quite damaged, even destroyed all around, its almost just after war, still people are living and working in here.Just stroll around and get the feeling.
A good place to visit on sunny day, a lot of old buildings to see and to hear a history about the place.
Huge fortress!! 85% preserved as well. Must visit in Daugavpils.
Great walls and only...inside soviet times military buildings, ruines and abandoned houses.
It is a significant historical place, worth visiting. Beautiful views, green!
Not as good, though more will be restored + there ale blocks of flats inside. Rothko museum looks pretty from outside, have not been inside
Very nice place to visit. Full of history starting from tsar times till Soviet times, highly recommended.
Very mice place. Full of places to see. Great guide at the information centre. Worth to spend an afternoon exploring.
It has nice museum inside with fine exhibitions. Nice place to visit and spent some quality time.
One of magnificent historical pieces in Latvia, Daugavpils, I was expecting that park in the middle of fortress will be better maintained, but I guess you can’t have it all 😊
Not much to see, but with the guide its quite interesting to learn about history. The restored part of the fortress is impressive. Interesting fact is that there are people living in the territory of the fortress in Soviet time build homes. Also there are 2 small grocery stores where you can pick some refreshers or snacks.
This is a very interesting place and a must visit if you are visiting Daugavpils. But be prepared to see not only historical buildings but also old and destroyed buildings that need in the best way to put it serious renovation. You must be very cautious if you want to see the whole area of the fortress and not only the nice renovated area in front of the main entrance.
Nice park I like it!❤
Very nice place!
Napoleonic era fortress, remarkably well preserved and under renovation in various parts. Able to experience the raw edge of the decaying architecture also.
Really nice attention from Sandra at information center. She explained me everything about Daugavpils fortress and Dinaburg. Thank you very much from Spain.
Some of parts of the fortres was reconstructed however, most of the buildings inside are still abandoned. But nevertheless it is still a very beautiful and spiritual place with its own charm.
It is enjoyable if you are into broken buildings. History is around you the way it was meant to be- destroyed, not much left of fort, but still a nice place to visit
Had an early morning walk in there... :)
Authentic place to visit in Daugavpils, yoi can feep its unique atmosphere, though a lot of stuff have to be done there (renovating buildings and such)
Not what we expected. Maybe local people know more what to find there, but we did not find anything very exciting there. Only some old buildings, houses, but we expected something like castle or fortress.
One of the largest fortresses in Europe. Great place to explore the history, architecture, art and nature. Mystic and romantic place. Highly recommend to everyone: families, couples, etc.
No open hours posted, got locked in and had to travel all around the territory to get to our car. Otherwise nice, great potential but sadly unrealised.
some abandoned buildings, a museum and lots of quiet streets to enjoy a walk.
Nice place for a walk, there was very nice history student at the gift shop, who told us all the history of the fortress.
I love the place. Decent sized fortress, nice tour, good gallery there. Lots of old buildings that are vacant. Sometimes it feels a bit like a ghost town.
A place with an enourmous potential. Many ruined palaces waiting to be rebuilt for their new purposes. The staff in tourist offices is excellent.
First of all, I recommend that anyone who visits should at least do some cursory research ahead of time. Im not going to post my research here because there are several websites (start with Wikipediawhere you can discover the rich and unique history on your own.I visited with a group of friends and it was raining off-and-on while we were there. We stayed for about two hours total and barely scratched the surface of just how impressive this fortress is. If I lived in or near this town, I would be at this place a lot.The city has sanctioned this area basically as a park and it is free to enter and walk around. They have a list of rules posted in several languages, but basically if you arent trashing the place or conducting an unauthorized excavation, youre okay. When we walked inside, I thought "Is that all?" and then we realized we had only passed through the outer walls. We were able to see the water outline of the walls on Google maps and determine an approximate size of the place. We clearly did not have time to see everything, but what we saw was impressive! It would be a great service to the legacy of this citadel to refurbish one of the old buildings into a small museum that explains the history better. When you walk around, there are plaques and signs that explain a little of what is important, but it is difficult to put everything into context without this type of facility. (There is a museum inside the walls, but it was an art museum(??so we did not go inside.Im sure its nice but we just didnt have time for that.Overall, this was my favorite thing to see in Daugavpils. As I said before, I would like them to put a small museum inside to better explain the historical context of the site. If you are ever in Eastern Latvia and you enjoy history, you should make an effort to visit.
It is truly sad that such a marvelous place is ruined and not cared after. At some points you will be able to take authentic Zombieland pictures.
Great place to visit.Actualy thats a museum. But tottaly unorganised for tourists.
The little gem of Daugavpils. Many years ago was considered to be a "ghetto" but will the help of the history enthusiasts, this place became a "must see" for visitors and tourists from Latvia and abroad.
Its one of the best retained fortresses in nowadays - almost in whole perimeter there are original stone walls with ditches around them. Inside fortress there are a lot of city administration and abandoned factory buildings, including Mark Rothko museum with original paintings.Back in the day, when building of fortress finished, war technology advanced so far, it could easily shoot over the walls with cannons from far away. So it never experienced fights it was build for.During soviet union, it was military base and they destroyed one of the narrow entrance gates, so they can wheel in combat aircraft.
