The Nepali form of the Hindu priest house or math corresponds to a place where the religious activities regarding the worship of the deities take place. The design of the Math, its orientation, location and internal planning corresponds closely to that of a typical dwelling house. It is fully integrated into a terrace of houses along a street or overlooking an open space and may only be recognized by its superior woodcarving and more extravagant decoration.Recent research has upto now established the existing of 17 maths in the three cities of valley. The biggest concentration of maths is located around the Dattatreya Temple in the Tachapal Tole of eastern Bhadgaun. The head of a math was the Mahanta, who, in a monastic environment, gathered students, Sadhus an d Gurus around him. He was not only highly respected with in the math itself, but also in the outside community to the extent that even kings recognized his position and minister have to bow before him.Larger maths generally comprise of several house units (Gharswhich is a three storied building generally centered around a courtyard without any fixed orientation and a central load bearing wall. The Pujarimath situated at Tachapal tole in the Southeast corner of the temple place of Dattatreya, for example, consist of four ghars.
