Darling Downs Zoo - Zoo in Warwick, Australia
Darling Downs Zoo in Warwick
Description
Brilliant little zoo. All staff are very knowledgeable & friendly. All animals seem well cared for & happy. We also did the meerkats & lion / tiger experience, both highly recommended, keepers are also happy to help with photos.
MoreIt’s good take my kids to this zoo. Lots animals and not to far to walk. Very relaxed.
MoreGreat little zoo, with a great range of animals. You can see the work they are putting into the zoo to make it better and expand. Make sure you wear walking shoes and pack water bottles. Thanks for a great day.
MoreA great zoo to visit with the family. Really friendly staff and so many different animals including ones we’ve never seen before. Our favourite was the baby leopard and white tigers! Highly recommend
MoreThis place is AMAZING!The staff are all fantastic and the animals were awesome. Some people have said it is small but I feel it is actually great. I had my 11yr old with me and we were able to walk around and actually enjoy every single animal only stopping for 20 minutes to have lunch and we were there from 9:30am until after 2pm.This is such a hidden gem that has the most amazing African animals and plenty others.Baby meercats and leopards plus an albino kangaroo joey .......... The cuteness was fantastic.Seriously worth every penny in fact I would have paid more
MoreDidnt know what to expect but we had an amazing day out there on the Darling Downs. The staff were very friendly and knowledgeable. The animals were in very good condition and very well cared for. Big Cats amazingly friendly though I wouldnt put your hand in their enclosure. Great picnic area, doing great endangered species breeding programs, need more support.
MoreFriendly team there with great demonstrations throughout the zoo.We also did the meerkat experience. Was quick but if you like them would recommend. They are opening up some more exhibitions, so look forward to watching this zoo evolve.
MoreI went to Darling Downs Zoo yesterday, it was fantastic. They had a huge variety of animals. Most animals at the zoo were friendly. My favourite was the capybara and the llamas. Lots of sitting areas. Toilets kept clean. Only problem there was not much food in their cafe, you need to bring your own food.
MoreI was surprised at how compact it was but a great selection of animals. Cages were a bit smaller than I would have liked but a lot of the animals are part of breeding programs for endangered species so understandable. Lots of different feeding times and experiences. They have no funding so rely on donations and have land to expand to. Definitely worth a visit
MoreTo be honest it was quite a depressing place. All the poor animals in cages looking depressed. We didn’t have fun at all. We had one monkey who kept coming up the bar when we tried to walk away and then it would put its head down :-( also the African grey bird, would not let us leave for like 30mins. It was hidden away behind a tree in a small cage and looked Super depressed. We talked to it for about half an hour and it absolutely loved chatting to us but every time we tried to walk away It looked sad and kept following us along the cage, we’d come back and it was chirpy and happy again. The lions were in a small cage in the full sun for hours and also didn’t look happy. What sort of a life is this for the animals? And what sort of thing are we teaching children that this is okay? Documentaries would be best to teach our young how these beautiful animals live in the wild, not cooped up in small cages their whole life’s. Wanted to love it, came out feeling extremely drained and sad.
MoreI read a fair bit of the review before taking my 20months old daughter to visit.I have to say this place is much better than I expected. The staff are nice. There’s a huge collections of animals. Some I never seen at other zoos and some I never heard before.I am no animal expert but they all seem very healthy and well looked after. My daughter really enjoyed the visit.Weekday visit is not very busy and you can really take your time looking at each exhibition without being rushed or in a crowd. One thing I read in many review was about stroller access. I took my light travel stroller today and it was alright to move around. My daughter walked for part of it and stayed in the stroller for part of it. The path are not paved and it does have little pebble and stones at some part of it but most parts there were flat path you can push through. The walk up to the giraffe/ zebra/ cheetah etc was uphill and with distance but we didn’t have any trouble getting there.Next time I might bring my other stroller and see how it goes.Overall a very enjoyable visit. Definitely will be back soon!
MoreCant recommend this zoo enough! Warm friendly staff from the keepers to the shop..make sure to get your coffee before 3 pm! thats when they shut the shop :)You get to hold a snake! And...at no extra cost..how awesome Is that!Well worth the beautiful and scenic drive there. They have a great array of animals and are expanding.A definite must to experience!
MoreGreat zoo with lots to see. I enjoyed the Meerkats especially.
Was a good day and there are some interesting animals. You have the option to buy pellets to feed SOME of the animals (if theyll come to youfor $2 ea. The pathways werent very pram friendly, however we were told at the pay counter they were "under construction". Unfortunately wed already bought our tickets and made the drive. The giraffes were way too far up to fathom dragging a pram and 2 toddlers, and we were quite distraught at the fact the leopard was by itself — he was pacing around the enclosure and appeared quite distressed. We were a bit disappointed overall, but the kids seemed to enjoy themselves.
MoreWonderful experience in a very natural setting with animals you do not often see in other zoos. Plenty of space for all the animals and the information provided during the animal feedings was very well presentedDefinitely will revisit
MoreGreat little zoo, you get so very close to the big cats, hearing the roar of the lion was a highlight. We will return when the mud has gone! I have been telling all our friends, more than enough to see in the 5 plus houurs we were there with our two grandsons. Friendly staff a real bonus.
MoreSad to see it so bland and boring for animals especially the tigers and lions. It all looks run down. Seeing other zoos they have nice as much as possible natural setting, here animals looked miserable and it’s very unsettling.Boxes for housing for wild cats? Really? Severe pacing marks in the cages. Appalling!!!!!!!!
MoreWhat a fabulous place to take the children. Lots of animals to see. The baby giraffes were special. No good for anybody in a wheelchair. No food available but you are able to take a picnic lunch or BBQ as they have a BBQ available to cook on. We loved it.
MoreIt’s a very pleasant day out - great to show kids the animals but do note that the facilities are very basic. Best to take a picnic than rely on buying a meal - the kiosk is a little lacking but there’s ample picnic grounds to utilise. Grab a drink and ice cream there certainly, just pack your main lunch food. You can take your food in through the gate no problem. Also check show/feeding times as most are in the morning so arrive early.
MoreWe arrived at the zoo at 10am, in time for the first show at 10.15 - patting the baby alligators. We made it around the zoo in about 2 hours. Plenty of variety there to see and enjoy. After our picnic lunch and purchasing a very pleasant coffee there, we took another leisurely stroll around the circuit. We were rewarded by seeing some of the beasts that were partially hidden the first time around. The dirt walking tracks thoughout the compound are easy traverse, and fine for prams. The zoo sells bags of animal feed for $2, good value and worth purchasing. We went with a group of 12 adults and 4 babies; we all had a great day. 😊
MoreFantastic Staff, answered all questions, and you can get much closer to the big cats than at other zoos, very safe though as well. An amazing experience, is a small zoo, but very family friendly. If you do follow the talks you still get a good day out. Highly recommend to everyone.
MoreAmazing Zoo! Loved seeing all the animals you wouldnt normally see anywhere else and the little monkeys! 😂
MoreArrived at Darling Downs Zoo and had a really great time visiting all the different animals. I had a meerkat and a lion experience. Both experiences I highly recommend. I got to feed the lionesses as the lion was sleeping and not having it. The zoo keepers and handlers were all friendly, down to earth and knowledgeable. The lion keeper also let me feed the tigers as well.
MoreWe went to this zoo last week I had never heard of before in over 40 years here. Only a hour and half drive from Brisbane there is a privately owned zoo. Easy to find . Was really surprised. For the zoo yes it is small but staff were very friendly. They had shows for most of the animals where they would tell you about them . You get to hand feed a few of the animals which the kids loved ..( not the big cats but lol they had cheetahs and leopards and a white loin among many others. Great encounter as well with all different creatures. We did one staff was super nice and full of information. We all loved having the little monkeys crawl over us and eat from our hands . Again this is not a really big zoo, we got there at 10am and was finished about 2.30 to 3pm . Took own lunch and there is a BBQ there to use and a nice amount of picnic tables. We went on a long weekend and was not overly crowded so was easy for the kids to see ever show . Thank you for a great day out
MoreThis quaint little zoo is a surprising little place, that is worth a visit, if you go prepared for what it is.What it is, is a small zoo with a strong ecological focus and a good range of animals. What it isnt is Australia Zoo.We went on a weekday, during school term time and pretty much had the place to ourselves. Its not a huge zoo and at first glance has a somewhat "Tiger King" look to it. But that sentence is unfair and does it a disservice. You can easily stroll around in one and a half hours. In doing so you will get to see big cats, Giraffes, zebras, reptiles and plenty of primates. Entry to the zoo is inexpensive, they offer day passes as well as annual. Parking is free. There are several free talks/animal feedings throughout the day from knowledgeable staff. I would advise arriving in the morning to take full advantage of these as the bulk of them take place between 9 and midday. There are also several "close-encounter" experiences, where you can get up close and personal with the animals. These include Lions, Giraffes, Zebras, Meerkats and Marmosets (amongst othersand come at varying extra costs. This will add considerably to your cost for the day out, but is well worth it, because it truly does involve what it says. We chose the marmoset experience and I can say without doubt it was one of the most unforgettable experiences of my life. The little primates bouncing around and finding homes on shoulders, heads and even inside jumpers. The facilities are fairly rudimentary, but clean and perfectly fine. There is a small cafe selling pies, sausage rolls and sandwiches, but it may be worth bringing your own lunch. There is a large picnic area in which to enjoy eating it. Finally the gift shop has a decent range of soft toys and other toys/souvenirs to buy as a reminder of a good day out.Overall, we had a really great time when we visited. If you go, armed with the knowledge this is a smaller size zoo, you will be guaranteed a surprising and rewarding day out... This will be particularly enhanced if you are willing to pay a little extra for the personal experiences.
MoreAbsolutely Amazing! Amazing experience, great talks, up close and personal with the animals, fun monkeys! An array on animals. Friendly staff. I highly recommend coming to Darling Down Zoo!
MoreGreat zoo! Weve seen the signs along the highways for years and decided to pay a visit. We were really impressed by the size and amount of animals. The shows were great and the staff were friendly. Plenty of parking and table areas for lunch.
MoreThree hours spent at Darling Downs zoo with three Under 9 boys was time well spent on the weekend. Educational and great care given to the animals in difficult circumstances (too much rain). The staff were warm, friendly and helpful, clean spacious toilets and the iced coffee was the best we had ever had!!
MoreThe zoo is an underrated gem 💎 You can walk about and get so up close and personal to the friendlier animals. You can feed certain animals, the zoo does special shows as well, and alot of effort is put in to keeping it pretty and clean. We highly recommend visiting; support from visitors is the backbone of their operation as they arent government funded. Keep the zoo alive 💛
MoreQuite some big cats and other animals you simply wont see in Australian zoo. Deers and antelopes feeding is unique as well. Amentities are no comparison to other government funded zoo, but has more varieties of animals. I feel u will have more chance and time to spend with each animals as well due to less customers. Strongly recommended. I dont need fancy Cafe, fancy facities or fancy shops, all we need to see is more animals. You can have intimate time with their animals in short distance.I just cant believe government not funding the zoo. They are doing g a great job.
MoreThe Darling Downs Zoo, amazing. I enjoyed every minute. We arrived at 9am and found the animals very interactive. Loved it, thank you Darling Downs Zoo team!
MoreGreat little Zoo if your looking to take kids on a budget friendly outing 😁 they do have a small cafe but also have tables to bring your own picnic lunch which I recommend.
MoreSmall, privately owned Zoo, with a big heart. The staff are excellent and brilliant at their jobs, having a deep caring nature for the animals and the Zoo as a whole.Entry fees are extremely reasonable, considering the number of mouths that need feeding, currently$40 for Adults, $26 for children and $33 for consession holders. With new land having been purchased adjoining the current Zoo, we can expect bigger and better things on the future!
MoreAmazing family day out very interactive with the animals. Great staff with lots of knowledge. With all the rain we have had the drive out is very scenic as well. Looking forward to our next visit👍👍
MoreThanks for the awesome experience and such a cool variety of animals to see today we loved it 🦓🦁🐯🐅🐆🦙🦒🐨🐒 !!
MoreWas very disappointing. Coming all the way from Brisbane. Everything appeared run down and needing lots of TLC. Paying $40 per person was expensive considering the state of the place. The animals looked pretty sad and lifeless behind thick mess fencing..... again very disappointing 😞
MoreA decent zoo 40 minutes from the Toowoomba CBD, theres a variety of animals from both here and abroad. The prove of admission is well worth it as the zoo is privately owned amd the animals are well looked after. If the weather is forecast to be hot, Id suggest taking an umbrella as there isnt much shade when walking around, however, there is shaded seating in the picnic area and a few shaded benches around the park. You can buy bags of food which you can give to certain animals around the zoo for a couple of bucks each which the kids enjoyed. Some people have said you can spend 5-6 hours at the zoo, but you can comfortably see everything in 2 or 3 if you have kids.
MoreThis place is in need of some TLC but it is a great place to visit and has so much potential to be amazing. The admission fees and experience fees are low. This park isnt about making a profit and charging customers a fortune - it is about giving people the opportunity to experience a wide range of animals. I would love to see a multi-million dollar lotto winner invest some funds into this park, it is well deserved and it could enhance customer comfort (pathwaysand boost promotion and marketing. However, seeing the diversity of animals here outweighs the rocky path in my opinion. It was great to feed the Emus and Zebras and other animals. There are so many beautiful bird species that I have never seen before. Tell your friends to put this place on their bucket list and get out there and visit. It is a great experience.
MoreHad a great time walking around and seeing all the different animals from Africa, South America, South-East Asia and Australia, not a big zoo but a fun and interesting zoo, you can buy food and feed the animals, there are different personal experiences as well....however my favourite is still the meerkats!
MoreVery friendly staff! Great local attraction. Highly recommend taking family for a look.We have a lovely day out in the region visiting lots of local businesses.
MoreIt was a wonderful day out seeing the animals, perfect for young children who want to run around, we had a 2 and 3 yr old with us and they loved it, just make sure you bring a heap of water to walk around but there is a kiosk full of gifts, food and cold drinks
MoreIts way out in the middle of nowhere seemingly if you take the wrong road. There is room for a lot more development at this zoo such as a proper food kiosk and coffee, and more shady trees and bench seats up where the giraffes are. I didnt like where the zebras were penned in, they needed more space so they can run about. Nonetheless a good collection of animals, I hope they can get some more sponsorship and support there to grow the zoo.
MoreLoved it They have a breeding program. Animals from Africa,Asia, Australia. Lions, tigers, giraffe, meekats, hippo, zebra and so so much more. Worth the effort, time, drive, entry fee,a must see for all.
MoreAmazing day. Visitors can get so close to the animals and feed so many. The zoo was not too large to walk around and plenty of shade and seating. It was not super busy like many other zoos so was not a worry loosing children in crowds. 4-5 hrs of fun for a family of 6. Take a picnic for under the trees on the table and chairs supplied. Best to follow zoo keepers feeding times to see the animals interacting and moving about.
MoreA great day out @ Darling Downs Zoo! Friendly staff, informative tour & feeding experience... we paid for the Meerkat experience, absolutely fabulous and well worth it! Thank you to all the staff @ Darling Downs Zoo.
MoreVisited the Zoo on Saturday with family and had a great day out. Drove out from Ipswich through Gatton and came home via Cunninghams Gap. Lovely drive if you havent been out that way before, especially this time of year. Staff were very welcoming and friendly and the Zoo, while not huge, was well set out and included plenty of animals to keep us busy. Toilets and facilities are very clean and tidy and there are a few portable toilets located around the Zoo if you dont wish to walk back to the main area. Make sure you grab a map which includes animals locations and the animal talk times etc which is a must, if you want to hear more about the animals or see them being feed. A little up hill walk to the back area where the giraffes & cheetahs are located but there are a number of bench seats located around the zoo if you need a break. You can also feed a number of animals including the Zebras and Lamas with food purchased at the office/cafe/shop for $2, which is great for the kids.Overall great experience.
MoreVery nice! Family own Zoo, you can expand around 2 to 3 hours. Children loved feeding the animals. Best time to visit is from 10:00am to 1 pm.
MoreWent here for my Birthday with my Daughters - what an amazing little zoo!!! I was lucky enough to experience the Giraffe encounter and it is something I will never forget. Such a hidden little gem, with so much to offer - well worth the drive.
MoreGreat little zoo! Definitely worth the trip out! Breeding program with a lot of the animals . Lots of different monkeys you could watch all day. Giraffes zebras lions and more. All well looked after by the kind owners.
MoreTucked away in the valley is this zoo filled with endangered animals from across the globe, along side some very familiar natives. Our experience was pleasant as we enjoyed feeding the zebra, llamas and an animal which resembled a hippo but was much smaller and very friendly. We had the chance to see lions, white lions, a tiger, cheetahs and giraffes up close. It did feel like we were on an African plain. It isnt a huge zoo and you can visit all the animals in one day. I do recommend this place for a family outing of a different nature. Id love to come back and visit again, the scenery is also lovely.
