Sassafras VIC 3787, Australia, Cheltenham
This scenic forested area filled with birds offers multi-use trails, picnic areas & a playground.
1st time on the 1000 Steps since before covidCan only walk up the steps now, which is so good.No runners, much quieter and relaxing
Walking tracks through the rain forest with lots of birds including lyrebirds. Many of the tracks can be used with a specialised wheelchair and some helpers. Cafe on site.
Beautiful environment, nice creeks and tracks. Well maintained
Great BBQ facilities, parking was good though it wasnt good weather so not as busy, shelter with BBQ was very convenient. Lots of park area and playground for kids to play.
Beautiful place for a solo or a group get away. Wear good hiking shoes if going during the rains. The paths will be very muddy and the shoes will get dirty. Look for kookaburras, cockatoos and lyre birds. Theres a cafe and toilet at the entrance. Try to download and keep an offline map if youre taking PTV, as signals in optus would be very poor here.
Bellview Terrace/Ramu Ave/One Tree Hill Picnic Ground return.Never gets easier, but always so satisfying reaching the top then rewarding ourselves afterwards with a great breakfast at Cafe Brewd.
This place is absolutely beautiful to spend time with friends, family or alone. Its unique landscape various kinds of plants, flowers and trees were orchestrated well. I never had enough spending time at this garden.
If you really want to get out in the bush with great walking tracks then this is the place to go. Theres also plenty of parking spaces and a Cafe. The 1000 steps is the best if your into exercise and want a challenge. Its surrounded by bushland so makes walking a very nice experience
It was good, was really busy on a Saturday but still managed to find parking could do lyrebird steps only as 1,000 steps is still closed, but this fun too, 1.4 odd KMs, little tough in the beginning for the beginners but fun overall
The actual steps ar still closed sadly. But still nice to do the path
Came to see the lush greenery and enjoy the fresh air. There are a lots of birds, they are not shy and interact with human.
Best place to hike. Such a beautiful trail and a great feeling to be immersed in nature
An Arborists haven, so many captivating trees to admire. Their formation extending over hundreds of years for some and the vast array of habitat hollows providing shelter for birds, bats and other wildlife.
Great walking trails but youll need to be fit for some of them.
Great place just to relax, bring the kids, have a picnic and just enjoy life.
1000 steps was closed did the "fitness track" would recommend if you have an entry level of fitness.
Amazing park, perfect for Lyre Bird spotting
We came here for hiking but due to closure of some of the hiking place, we went for the lyrebird track instead of Kokoda track 1000 steps memorial walk. It was drizzling and we hiked up under the rain. Fresh air and heard lyrebird welcoming us with their lovely voice! A memorable hike for 750m distance before giving up!
Many trek trails to explore and the serenity of the place is perfect for those who wish to be away from the buzz of the city and just relax with the tunes of the birds.
I love getting out in nature. The only thing better is doing it with friends and family
Great place for a walk. Breath taking beauty all around. The freshness of the air, the tall trees, sky high canopy.....all add up to a great outdoor experience. There are tons of great walking tracks to choose from, head over to www dot explore the dandenongs dot com dot au for a free book on walking tracks around the dandenongs.
Beautiful walk and environment
Very nice place to trekk and relax۔to take off the mental and physical burden of daily grind۔Made me nostalgic about my place،Kashmir ،back home۔
Good spot for RC ROCK CRAWLERS had a blast...
I feel like to stay the tall trees, fresh and green.
This classic national Park is in of Victoria’s and you can understand why even in the 1800’s people decided this place deserved protection! My visit was to the 1000 steps/ Kokoda memorial walk area and even though the steps are understandably still closed there are amazing recreational operoo ties across the park.So close to Melbourne it’s cool And often wet environment would serve for a great summer reprieve or a cool winder explore. The region has so much to offer across not only the park but the many villages across the ranges.
Great place to hike. The 1000 steps is still close so i opted for the fitness trail. Very steep. Good for those wanting to burn some calories. Reached the one tree hill grounds and it was a great reward to just rest and enjoy the area. Foggy and cool on top. Cant wait to do the 1000 steps when it opens.
Beautiful natural scenery. Saw a wallaby and two lyrebirds, one with its lyre on display.
A wonderful place to walk in, however do make sure youre aware of trail updates and fallen trees. Many trails are closed so do check online before embarking on long or complex hikes. Numerous picnic grounds and lots of opportunities to spot lyre birds, wallabies, Kookaburras and kangaroos apart from colourful species of parrots and on the flora side all manner of ferns, trees, fungi and more!
Easy jungle trail for those who want to enjoy some light tracking, surrounded by chirping of birds of various species, including cockatoos. If you are lucky, you may see a lyebird crossing your path.
Just walked 20km through the National Park from Belgrave Railway Stn to Upper Ferntree Gully Stn via Kallista, Sherbrooke, Ferny Creek and One Tree Hill. Beautiful forest, and tracks in great conditions.
Always lovely to spend some time on the trails. Walked from Forest Road up to Sassafras and back down, about 15km all up. Maps will tell you there is a trail up to Clark Road from Alpine around the paddock. This is not true, have to go through the bush. Besides that, lovely :)
Whether its hot or cold the Dangenong Ranges is a wonderful place to visit. There are plenty of nature walks. Pleasing cafes on the edge of the bush or others in the small villages, plenty of choice of styles.
The scenery of the Forest Park is beautiful and pleasant, and there are facilities for people to rest along the mountaineering avenue. It is very user-friendly and is a tourist and leisure destination.
Although I trekked for just one loop (some were close eg.1k steps). Good place to train for stamina and get the heart pumping. Will definitely go back in near future. Bonus point - so excited to see wallabies in the wild! Love the nature :)
We visit 1000 steps tracks ( Kokoda and Lyrebirdevery week as long as it is not raining. It is a weekly exercise for us. Definitely recommend for people live in surrounding surburbs. The air is so fresh in winter and I am addicted to bush walking!
Spectacularly beautiful area of the world and an absolute natural wonder of endless beauty. I could spend every day exploring the Dandenong Ranges National Park and never completely understand it or see it all in a lifetime. Every season also brings a unique beauty to this Aussie wonderland of natural splendor
I love the Dandenong Ranges. I find it very relaxing. There are so many walking tracks to enjoy. I took my camera and it never ceases to amaze me the beauty of the area.
This is one of those scenic National parks that is famous for many treks with different difficulty levels suiting every indovidual, especially the 1000 Steps which is not just breathtaking but extremely tiring.Highly recommend
Pretty good place for a fresh walk not very far from the CBD but far enough to be in a relaxing and quite place 👍The only annoying point is those people who rush the 1000 steps, push you to be faster and then take a break out of breath. You overtake them and etc... pretty annoyingDon’t try to act like a tough guy if you are out of breath just by climbing a few steps, that’s pathetic and annoying for the people who just wanna enjoy a little relaxing walk.
We visited Sherbrooke Falls..... Not much of a waterfall without the rain but still a beautiful walk to get there with lots to see and hear
My favourite weekend getaway and hiking spot. Geocaching, animal tracking and photography, great trails, and beautiful views of the entire Greater Melbourne City...
Check out 1,000 steps! It’s amazing and come about 6am during summer. You will see absolutely stunning sunrise! It’s such a gem. Enjoy!
This Park does not look like common park that you see in Melbourne, this Park likes beautiful rain forest with natural vegetations. For people who want to cardio exercises while enjoying beautiful natural rain forest, this is the best place. Very highly recommended place and will visit this place again in the future, for sure. Love it this place! PS: make sure you fit enough and bring a lot of water if you visit in summer to climb up until the top 😁.
5 star for its beauty and the walks. But 1 star for the Cockatoo feeding. The authorities need to update their website and let customers know that they do not allow feeding of the Cockatoo any longer. It took us more than an hour to get there only to find out that its closed. Upon inquiring, the cafe lady told us that they have closed the feeding activity.
Worth an hour drive from Melbourne to visit with cockatoos in wild. These birds are fun to visit. Lots of them. Unfortunately feeding birds has discontinued since Feb20 still these make it a sight. Few small walks in vicinity and lots of parking space available. There is a cafe too for handy refreshments and souvenirs. One shed area for people to sit and eat. Couple of bbq and open sky seating too.Clean public toilet available.
Great hiking experience! The Kokoda Track Memorial Walk (1000 stepswas too steep so its not advisable to start from there. Its better to hike up from the trail close to the train station towards the One Tree Hill Picnic Ground (and if youre lucky, youll spot a wallaby like we did), then hike down towards the 1000 steps.
Easily accessible by private or public means. Whether for fitness or fun or meditation, individual or a group, this is a great place.Family friendly with children playground.Informative too as you get to learn bits and pieces of history. Some few minutes shy of an hour to walk your way to the top as you pass scenic views on your way to the top
I loved being with nature and this is the best in the east where you can spend relaxing time by yourself or with a family. There are other things to do within the region like walking up on 1000 steps which will take you over an hour, take a sip of your favourite coffee in the local cafe shops, and take a glimpse of the overlooking at the sky restaurant especially on sunset
A lovely hike not too far from the hustle and bustle of the city. Plus waaaaay less hectic than the 1000 steps. Easy to find parking and facilities. Sighted lots of interest Flora and fauna. There was a bit of steep climbing to get the heart pumping but otherwise a rather leisurely hike the way I like it.
