Cuween Hill Chambered Cairn - Tourist attraction in Kirkwall, United Kingdom
This one is well worth a visit, Its as intact as Meashowe and still has its original roof. I suspect that the method of construction is exactly the same as the houses at Skara Brea and not the thatched roof setup they are shown with.
Very special to be able to explore such a place
Sacred magikFollow ur heart
Prepare to get muddy if entering. Not for the claustrophobic. Worth a visit for the view alone.
Great neolithic chambered tomb!
Had the dogs with me (a slight cheat for getting up the hill)🤣Yes you do have to crawl through the entrance on all fours. Dont forget the torch in a box by the steps.
Take a good torch, and you need to crawl in.
FREE. Bring your flashlight because its very dark inside. Theres one available at the entrance but its not the best. Entrance is very small especially for tall people still do able.
Car park is up the hill up a decently good gravel road. Room for three cars. Down at main road area there is room for three more cars on a dirt/mud/grass area. Crawl on hands and knees to get into tombs area which is the size of a walk in closet with some small side rooms. Room opens up about 6.5 feet tall inside.
Excellently preserved ancient site, not accesible to everyone tho as the entranceway is very low and tight.
Well worth the walk up the hill and the crawl into the cairn. Mind blowing to know how old it is. Take a torch.
Faded roadside sign with a small space to park near the road and a spot for two/three cars a bit further up. Walk uphill and cross the stile. The entrance is fairly low so you will need to crawl in on hands and toes. Theres no lighting so you also need a torch, and dont try to stand up too soon both going in and coming back out.Once out, walk up a bit further where someone has been building a set of cairns.
Magical!
Tight squeeze to get in but good to be able to enter a cairn like this. Bring a torch (or a charged phone), the one provided didnt have batteries.
Well worth a visit. Be mindful that getting into the cairn involves crawling on hands and knees with a torch in your mouth! Even without doing that its a very historic and atmospheric place, coupled with a fantastic view across the countryside to the sea. Climb a little further to the stacked stones up the hill. Its all on the St Magnus Way too, for those wanting to over that.
Luxurious accommodation recommended for over night stay.
An amazing place.
You need to get muddy to crawl into the cairn, but worth it if you are prepared to do so. Bring a torch, or use your phone, the battery was dead in the torch provided when we visited.
It is a stunning place, that is well preserved and allows to be explored for free by entering through a side entrance.Definitely worthwile a visit. Also there are some great virtual tours available 3D models available to explore it online.
This place was great and worth crawling through the damp entryway!
Fascinating place, completely free and well worth a visit. Youll need a torch (phone will doas its pitch dark inside, and youll have to climb over a stile and crawl through a low tunnel to get in.Theres a good information board outside. No other facilities, but the parking area and access is well maintained. Its not remotely on the same scale as Maeshowe but it is a similar design, and does have the advantage of having very few visitors, so you can take your time having a thorough look around.
Small car park at the base of the hill, relatively short and easy track up the hill, lovely view at the top, a torch is supplied in a box, you enter a very low entryway if you don’t like small spaces this might not be for you, it’s pretty interesting. If you follow the track upwards you’ll find a number of stacks looks like someone’s been practicing building with local stone.
I was totally scared. I couldnt wait to get outside. I seriously think this place is haunted or cursed. I would be intrigued to return to see if I sense it again.
À remarkable gem of a place.....beautiful inside and a fabulous location. Take some waterproof over trousers unless you want muddy knees....
We visited this after having been on the Maeshowe tomb tour so the kids better understood what they were seeing, which was helpful. The entrance is quite small and a little muddy. I ended up crawling in on hands and knees. I did appreciate the provided torch, but the battery was almost dead when we got there so it was dim. Still very cool to see inside. The kids enjoyed the outside more and rolling down the hill. The view from here is also stunning. Definitely worth a quick (slightly dirtyvisit.
Nice hike, interesting cairn, wonderful view!
Great views from the Cuween Tomb
A great experience, crawling into this ancient cairn without artificial lighting. A torch is available, although dont rely on this being adequate, so take your own. The site is not manned and entry is free. It is worth seeing with its interesting internal structure and informative information panel. The view from the hill is worth seeing too.
Remoted chambered cairn you can crawl into. Useful info board. You are likely to have the place to yourself - I did. Like Maeshowe, smaller but more isolated on a wind-swept hill.
Be careful while walking in it but its a cool little historical stone house.
A small cairn which is accessible 24/7. Be warned: you literally have to crawl to get inside. Hands and knees will get dirty/wet. Still, despite the size and crawling, I felt like an archaeologist for a moment, and the atmosphere inside was a nice experience.
A short walk uphill from the car park. You need to crrawl through the entrance tunnel and it can be muddy.
Very tight quarters, so be warned if youre claustrophobic. Bring your own flashlight (or use your cellphone), as the batteries were out when we went.
Very cool! You have to climb down a ladder to get into this one. Its very tight quarters, but worth the hike over. The views are great as well. You wont find coach buses here, either!
Very interesting neolithic chambered cairn. Worth a visit. Theres a car parking space off the main road and a final walk of about 200m up the hill to the cairn. Great views from the top.
A steady walk up from the car park. A loose surface so care is needed. A torch is by the entrance so, why wait. Crawl in and see where our ancestors placed the bones of their dead.
You have to walk up quite a steep hill to get to this place, no good for people with walking difficulties. Then climb up and down wooden ladders, and to enter the tomb you have to crawl with a flashlight. There are three buried Chambers inside but have greatly deteriorated over time. Free of charge.
I love the fact that there is a touch in a box so you can go inside and explore, You would not get that sort of thought around where I live :)
Go here!! Although we went on a Saturday, we were the only ones there, and it was a really cool experience. A nice little walk from the car park, and the cairn is very well-preserved. Its a little bit spooky inside.
A well preserved round cairn not very far from a small car park. It is possible to crawl inside but that very depends on your size as the passage is narrow and low. Inner chamber is high enough to stand up. You will need a torch or something to see inside.
Fantastic experience. Go in without any light to feel the way the original creators would have felt. Just mind your head
A beautiful example af a chambered cairn in perfect condition. You have to be agile to look inside; the entrance is about two feet/60 centimeters high. A flashlight is nessecary and available in a box outside.
Its so much more than you expect. Didnt think it would be open to enter as its unmanned. But you can 😄
This is a cairn well worth finding. It is managed by Historic Scotland but is free to visit.
History at its best. Wonder at the skill of the builders from thousands of years ago as you enter the cairn and feel the atmosphere of days long gone.
The little brother of Maeshowe. Far less crowded, and far less fake. By fake I mean there is no special lighting, no guided tours, no handicap access. this is the real thing, almost like discovering a chambered Cairn on your own. It is a very scenic walk half-way up Cuween Hill. Flashlights in the visitor box are mostly dead, so bring your own light source.Dont try it if you are claustrophobic.
Worth the climb up and a nice small entrance to get through into the chamber.
Really nice cairn. Entrance is through a short front entrance chamber (similar to Maeshowe- short people can duck walk and dont necessarily have to crawl on hands and knees. Nice, short walk up the hill with great views out over the entire area.
Interesting chambered cairn which is partly overlooked by its larger counterparts, but worth a visit.
My favorite place on the planet. When I touch the ground here I feel as if Im touching the whole earth!
