Cuvée Restaurant at Simonsig Estate - Restaurant in Noorder-Paarl, South Africa
Went for the disgorging experience, Cap Classique tasting and mixed platter. The disgorging experience comes highly recommended. We had a wonderful time!
I really enjoyed the time there. Wine tasting, en eating. Wonderful.
Recap >> Simonsig Estate is set on an enjoyable corner of Stellenbosch valley enhanced by remarkable views. It’s catchy yet not returning what promises. Incredibly overrated wines and disappointing food platters. Not willing to return.Story >> We went with friends over a weekend in mid-August and enjoyed a lovely sunny but really warm winter day which let us indulge of wines, food, views et cetera ie. the full package deal.Actually the wine tasting turned very disappointing as it starts with the flagship top level sparkling - or MCC ie. Method Cap Classique - and goes down to Brut and Rosè et cetera. Technically you should always start with the entry-level and go up not viceversa hence the approach, experienced palates shall be acquainted to skip any wine tastings which offer the top line for entry. The Simonsig Brut is plain like a tasteless juice almost, the Rose bitter, unbodied and with almost zero perlage (one barely can finish a glass), the flagship Cuvée Royale doable yet not unforgettable. Perlage ie. the aggregation of tiny bubbles which forms on the surface of a glass of sparkling wine - in general very poor for any Simonsig MCC. The wine farm has also a full range of red / white cultivars but it is well known for their MCCs hence to not let any stones unturned we decided to go with their range of white and skip red on the account of the weather (+22* degrees C). The Sauvignon does not worth, the Chenin does worth trying, the Gewürztraminer too rich in flavors and sweetness. We ended up ordering full range of mixed cheese & meat platters (2speaking of which, also was not returning the expectation. For R220 platter - give or take - you’ll get 4 (yes fourslices of meat and 4 pieces of cheese big enough to accompany the three slices of crunch bread on the side. If I hadn’t seen with my eyes wouldn’t believe it.Debrief >> Stellenbosch wine tastings offer quality standards waay different from Simonsig’s. Their sparklings do not deserve the sound attention they have. Ultimately, never look for sparkling wine from Stellenbosch as the wine district for MCCs is Franschhoek with some unexpected great stuff from Constantia area (don’t say too loud and don’t ask for dets, it’s a secret).
Was very nice excellent service and wonderful wines.Thank you City Sightseeing.
A beautiful wine estate in Stellenbosch producing world-class wines. Simonsig Tiara Bordeaux blend is defs my favourite!
It was so very beautiful with a calm atmosphere. Although we realised a little late that we wanted to order a platter as well, the server was nice enough to make up for it by giving us complementary dessert wine (which I absolutely loved). Definitely would return.
I spent great time with my husband here tasting wine. We ordered the Cheese platter and got satisfied. The wine though, the glasses they use don’t have the line, so the amount of each glass was more than enough to just taste it. But the way the wine was good we really enjoyed it. Just be careful not to get tipsy!:)
Beautiful estate. Did cc tasting with platter for two. The platter was delicious.
Wines and views were great, service not so great. A bit of neglect on finer details. But great wines and platters
The place is nice. The wines are good. The only beverages they sell are wines though. They have soft drinks, coffee and tea, but not many options for kids and no beers either. They only have three small platter options, no other meals.
Drove an hour to come for jot cross bun and wine pairing. Arrive at 1pm and were informed they dont have the hot cross buns. They couldve informed is? Decided to do a different tasting, waitress was rude, slow and dismissive. Wont be back VERY dissapointed
Sadly I have to say I am really disappointed in Simonsig. We always go back to Simonsig because of professional friendly service. We went there again today just to be disappointed. Our waiter seated us and gave the first tasting. He then sent a new waiter to do the second tasting, which I had no problem with. We waited about 20 minutes for the last two glasses of champagne. The place wasnt busy. 14:00 I went in to pay the bill and cancel the last two glasses. Our waiter did not apologize or offer to give the last tasting. He was quite arrogant and told me I could write a review. It is very sad as I was there to buy more bottles champagne because I love Simonsig. I also have family coming next week and would have loved to take them to this amazing place. This will not be happening anymore.
Very welcoming beautiful place to visit and taste some wine. Our host went out of her way and even organised a quick tour of the cellar and wine making process. Thank you so much, we enjoyed it very much. Hoping to visit you again soon.
Real good winetasting, wonderful picnic under the trees. Friendly staff and wonderful athmosphere. My Favoriten are Pinotage and White Sparkling nectarine sand?? wine..i will get it definitly in Germany. Thank you for this nice winetasting and plat of cheese, mixpickles, ham, nuts, grapes!
The wine was out of this world! Great staff too.
Love your Gewurtztraminer and Sparkling Wine.
Cellar tour for 2 people. He was excellent explained all the step from picking the grapes, weighing and bottling the wine. Answered all questions and then he spent time with us during wine tasting
Lovely wine farm. The setting is great, since the restaurant is closed they moved the wine tasting area under the trees in front of the building which is amazing especially on a hot summer day. If you want to sit on the lawn you can simply order a bottle of wine and relax.Their wine tasting options are pre determined and you can choose one of a few different options depending on your preference. You can still order per glass or ask to swop out a wine if you want. The staff is very friendly and accommodating as well as knowledgeable about the wines and the wine making process ( :at least the person who served us).The bubbly is amazing and they also have some desert wine options for someone with a rather sweat tooth or pallet. The platters are a joke though. R195 for a cheese, meat or mixed platter. The pieces on the platter are a few bite sizes with some bread and garnish. This really only serves one person when drinking 5 wines. They could really do a bit better here and rather asked for a little more money and put a decent piece of cheese and/or meat on the platter hence only 4 stars.Still will always go back as their wines and the bubbly tastes amazing and prices are for a bottle are reasonable just make sure you eat something before - lol . Thumbs up
Beautiful setting. Lovely wine. Friendly waiter. Platter: What an absolute disaster. At R200 it was barely enough to feed one person. I felt so embarrassed for my guests. R200? Really? You skimped so much we could rather go without. This is not on. No matter what currency we pay in.Visitors should know that the restaurant closed down permanently and that the platters you offer are sub-standard.
Took myself off for a morning bubbly tasting. Wow. So delicious and the wine helper was very knowledgeable. Such a pity the restaurant closed down in Lockdown. But still worth a visit. Wines are delicious.
Had a great day tasting some of the finest wine that South Africa has to offer. Thanks for the welcome.
What a great tasting. We were group of 12. No issues, no restrictions. Fantastic host. Great wine. We bought a 2005 Tiara from your aged cellar, great idea. Lovevely platters. Well done. This is costumer care.
We visited the farm today with friends, and was very disappointed in the service we received. There was nobody at reception to meet us. We had to find our own table amongst the dirty glasses that was standing around on the open tables. We were very surprised to see your hostess Candice walking amongst the tables and talking to other customers without her mask. So much for protocol!? Very disappointed in your winery. We came excited all the way from Mpumalanga and left very disappointed!
Great wine tasting selections! Had a hard time choosing which tasting we wanted since they all looked great! Our server Paulina was awesome & very enthusiasticly explained some fascinating info about each wine. Platter arrived very quickly, lovely selection of charcuterie. All in all a great experience.
Would NOT recommend. MCC tasting offered in hideous red wine glasses. Despite it being a slow and rainy day, we were told they didnt have enough champagne glasses...When asked why the table that arrived after us were served in proper glasses our server Charne would not answer. Also, some of the breads on the cheeseboard were stale (cheeseboard not good value for money when compared to similar offerings at surrounding farms).
The MCC tasting today, great, fantastic. Staff friendly, wine estate generous, great band, lots of competitors present, but without a problem. Great estate and great winesUnfortunately, I have a back problem and my left foot was giving problems. The general staff were helpful and kind, kudos to them and the family who runs this estate, but some manager there was rude and disrespectful
Enjoying our afternoon with Cap Classique tasting at this beautiful and tranquil set up of the farm. Love the packaging of the 50th special edition !!
Beautiful scenery and very nice wines!
Perfect afternoon out in Stellenbosch! A table outside under the trees or inside on soft couches and in front of huge windows that allows one to see the fab view.. you will not be disappointed whichever you choose. Great wines and good food. Lovely relaxed ambience and friendly staff. Cool vibe! A definite favourite
Great wine farm just outside of town with amazing views and an affordable tasting.
Great winetasting at stylish Simonsig.Absolutely loved the 2017 Tiara 🍷👌
What a great experience.. sitting under the trees after a wine tasting feeling hungry … and were really pleasantly surprised. A small group of us enjoyed a really great lunch which was beautifully presented and wholly enjoyed by all.Fantastic wines and sparkles for the girls …The free range duck liver parfait was delicious…Slow braised lamb shoulder .. tender and succulent with fresh veg and crispy potatoes .. everyone enjoyed their meals … the service and ambiance..
What a beautiful experience! Busy but they made everyone feel welcome. The service was beautiful. The ladies were greeted with sparkling wine because it was womans day. Theres a variety of wine tasting options. Questions were encouraged and and answered by knowledgeable staff. The wines taste really good. We bought way more than we budgeted for. Highly recommended
Best MCC in South Africa and a personal favorite. The tasting is amazing and the setting and service goes well with it.
10/10. Im pretty sure if I feel like going out and dont know where to go I will always come back to simonsig. Had a great time tasting their fabulous wines. Seriously try their 2017 gewurtztraminer and their Garland single vinyard wine. Fantasic easy drinking and characterful. The restaurant was also top notch. The most recent visit had a waiter that left something to be desired when it came to service but made up for it in other ways. Not much of a view but the entry to the wine farm is a prime spot to take a pic or two. The staff is friendly and cheerful and quite happy to help. Their restrooms are top notch, clean and well illuminated. The burgers at the restaurant are good but the flat bread is excellent. Fantastic crust with the freshest Ingredients Ive ever gotten on a plate I didnt prepare myself. One criticism of the restaurant would be their outside chairs that smoosh ones thighs together and really leave you pondering why your thighs are the way they are. Go and taste for yourself. The duck flatbread and the gewurtztraminer are a must!
Enjoyed the tasting, staff is friendly. I just love the farm its clean and beautiful decor😍
This was one of our favorite stops in Stellenbosch! At the restaurant we were greeted by an extremely friendly waitress and it only got better from there. The menu is wonderful (several options including vegetarian and veganand the food paired with the right wine was incredible! If we make it back to South Africa this will be our first stop :-)
Great wine, great service and the lady who served us was excellent and know her wines.
Specially went for the Pinotage Day 2020 celebrations. We were greeted with that horrible line Did you make a reservation?. The restaurant and tasting area were less than 10% occupied. So they seated the two of us in steerage in the cool breeze. For the Pino day tasting they crammed in 6 wines, ranging from just over a hundred Rand to about R400. Some the vintage wines had not been decanted yet so they took a while to open up. I had the server pour the 12 again as I got the cork. We decided to order the charcuterie which left a lot to be desired. The proscuitto was so thick it was could have classed as a pork steak. The other cuts were in the same realm so maybe the butcher can adjust the slicer for a better experience. The bread was old and tastless, and the olives had some raw garlic in the dressing. After deciding we were done our server disappeared even though I had requested the bill. My presence at the Tasting Room bar 10 minutes later was his reminder. We have had way better experiences at Simonsig before and I would encourage them to do better and be better.
Beautiful peaceful sactuary and precious wines. A definite future favorite. Loved the sweet wines and their stories so interesting.
Tuesday. Oct 19.We enjoyed the wine tasting and felt the service was little slow in between wines. The atmosphere, very relax and beautiful under the trees.Few choices of rate (pricefor wine tasting. We enjoyed the Rosé most.
Cuvée today for lunch was outstanding. The restaurant was a lovely mix of people sitting both inside and out and there was an easy going chilled vibe. The menu is small but caters for anyone’s wants and flavors. The wine menu is also a treat and you can order either a glass or a bottle of what ever suits your palate. Afterwards you can take a stroll around and see the history of the old beautiful farm.
Great range of sparkling wines; Simonsig were the first winery in South Africa to produce bubbles made in the true French “champagne” style (Méthode Cap Classique). Tastings cost R65-R75, but is complimentary with purchase. They offer cheese plates to accompany the tasting, and there is also a lovely restaurant too. They also offer winery tours.Great spot to spend an hour sipping bubbles and nibbling local cheeses.
Stumbled onto this wine estate by missing a turnoff...what a great find. Really worth the visit from a wine tasting and overall experience perspective.
What a peach of a find. Spend a few hours here today in the rainy weather. Started with a welcome MCC brut which wasnt part of the tasting and enjoyed 6 wines. If you buy tasting is free. Will definitely be back to enjoy this estate again
Easy vibes, good food and drinks. Service was great and the mcc tasting is a great addition
The wine tasting at Simonsig was great. The host was knowledgeable and passionate about his products. A wide range of wines are available, but my favourites are the Kaapse Vonkel Brut Rose MCC and the Redhill Pinotage. Recommended.
Very nice setting nestled in the Franchoek mountains on a beautiful wine farm. Lovely big oak trees create ample shade on the lush green lawns.Food is fantastic and wine selection is good. Both are overpriced, but the experiance is well worth it.Wine tasting is also a great experiance.A visit for a meal is highly recommended
Nice wine. Not my favorites but they have a very large selection that you can choose from. Beautiful view but the steak for lunch was absolutely fantastic. My knife just fell through the meat it was so tender.
Dont miss a visit to Simonsig vineyards @simonsigwines if you are passing through Stellenborch, both the cellar tour and the tastings are excellent and if you have time stay for a bite at the Curvee restaurant, the burger is great! Tumi @itumiller_wines did both the tour and the tasting, and it can thoroughly recommend it, excellent knowledge from grapes to finished wine. Excellent experience on all fronts.
