Series of historic caves with ancient art, various geological features & many resident bats.
Cueva de Ambrosio in Calimete
Description
Privilege
I love this place so much I returned with my daughter so she could see the 5 different species of bats flying around the cave. Wow what a natural wonder. I have done 8 caves so far in Cuba and this one is small but SOOOOO interesting. It has the most tribal art and some of it goes back 2000 years. When you are done rent a taxi for the day and go swim in Saturno Cave, visit La Dionisia Cafetal, visit Cueva Bellamar on your way to visit Matanzas. So much to see and do. Do NOT go on a tour. Just rent a taxi. If you are on a budget just share the taxi with other tourists.
MoreBats! 💓😍
Awesome place with cave drawings, bats and many other wonderful things to see
Nice little cave
Costs money, takes about 15 min to look around properly. Lots of bats, nice to see. Some cockroaches on floor so take shoes not flip flops. May or may not be worth it, depends what you enjoy. I found it expensive but I liked it so I dont really mind.
MoreOne of the highlights of our visit to Varadero. Lots of bats in a beautiful cave.
MoreAmazing
This cave provided an interesting activity to get us off the resort. Admission is 5 CUC. The cave is only about 200 m long but the natural light cascading through several holes in the cave is quite beautiful. There are lots of bats in the cave, and several pictographs. This site packs a big punch for its size - a worthwhile visit!
MoreFor $5 admission, a bat cave was promised, and a bat cave was delivered. A short walk or bus ride from most of the resorts. Now everyone keep quiet and minimize the flashlights, the residents of the batcave are trying to sleep.
MoreVery interesting caves. You do have to crawl in to see the interesting parts. The natural habitat there is very humid and hot. Its a short walk but you will need some cash for refreshments afterwards. Oh bring bug spray if you are a mosquito magnet.
More5 CUC to get in...on the hop on hop off bus route. Tour Guide has been working there 20 years. Some nice cave formations and lots of tiny fruit bats.
MoreNice place with quite a story from the guide. If you are in Varadero its worth visiting instead of just lying on the beach whole day...
MoreNice old place
Quiet place to see something different at Varadero
MoreLovely place.
Crowdy
Loved the story behind it, bats and great place for pictures.
It was neat to see the bats and the cave paintings. The tour guide was interesting. Worth the price of admission!
Not much value
I walked in the cave and I caught the tour guide painting pictures of turtles and village people on the wall. Would not recommend.
MoreCold Crystal
Amazing
MoreWow
Wonderful place to wonder around and see nature first hand. Wear shoes as the pathway is rough in places.
MoreVery interesting. Very affordable. Nice way to spend 30 minutes
Interesting especially for the light and shadows and for the bats living there. The ancient wall inscriptions and paintings are interesting if you have a guide explaining them (its included in the entrance fee which is 5 CUC). Closes at 4:30pm. We were a bit rushed by the guide who had to leave.
Morenice visit. 5 cuc for adult and 2.5 cuc for children with a guide.
Not for those who are claustrophobic. Interesting if you like to see the natural surrounding.
MoreDo not waste your time, its 5min visit and not worth it for sure. Saw many bats and few drawings, which doesnt look really old.
MoreAbsolutely awesome place full of wildlife and even found a wild iguana. Staff were spot on and spoke great English
MoreA few minutes walk from the Royalton Hicacos resort. The cost is 5 cuc per person. There is a guide who shows you around and explains the history of the cave. There are drawings on the wall as well as a lot of bats, who are harmless.
MoreThe cave was quite a bit bigger than I expected it to be. It was also completely dry, which surprised me as I saw from other posted pictures that the cave had water on the ground. There were also less bats than I expected, but maybe that is a good thing as we did not feel nervous about the few that were flying around. Lots of bats were hanging from the ceiling, were we could look at them nicely. There were drawings on the walls that the cave guide told us were pre-Columbus, but I strongly doubt that. Most likely pre-2018. Still it was a great cave and cool to see the underground formations.
MoreI visited this cave during my vacation in Varadero Cuba on March 14 2018. It is located in Varadero. We took the local bus which takes you there. It is cost 5 cuc to get in, tour lasts about 1 hour. You see lots of bats and can take as many pictures as you like.
MoreThere are bats in the cave which are really what make the experience very cool. It is nice for an hour or 2, the cave isnt all that big. The bats are benign. I went there with my boyfriend, very fun, and felt kind of bad for the poor bats since they were sleeping. There were (supposedlysome indigenous paintings on the walls but there werent all that many and I found them dubious though Im no archaeologist.
MoreReally interesting and well priced
Nice cave, you can get to see bats.
More5CUC/pax for 45 walk. Not bad but its too short. You may want to go to Saturno Cave instead. Its great there. You can even swim inside.
MoreHighly recommended tour into a cave filled with bats! this was the real deal for bat lovers.
Morenice old caves with lots of bats
I like
If you are staying anywhere in Varadero, take the time to go underground at Cueva de Ambrosio. Admission fees: bonus guide with a flashlight. Bring a flashlight! Bring the kids!We were nearing the end of our stay and had not yet visited Varahicacos Ecological Reserve, which is the kind of thing that happens when you travel with a group with different interests. Not only was it the last day but a short hour before the park closed (sunset).A complete cave experience for a novice: Vegetation, geology, pictographs, fauna and flora! The caves have high ceilings (over 8 feet). Though the occasional openings you can see the trees and vegetation growing above, but there are the odd plants whimsically growing on the cave floor. As you walk from room through room, there are bats, stalagmites and stalactites, an interesting selection of pre-columbian (maybecave drawings and visible stratification of stone, pebbles and fossilized vegetation formed by ancient dunes.
