Cothran's Bakery in Gadsden

We’ve seen this bakery every time we pass by going to Lowe’s hardware and traveling to the highway. But we never really knew how good the place was until 4 weeks ago when my dad bought a cranberry orange bread cake. Which I may say is very delicious it tastes homemade without any preservatives and truly coming from a bakery. Recently my dad bought a blueberry bread cake this past week and some pound cake sampler’s which came in small amounts, we all enjoyed it very much. However I may want to warn you that at times the sweetness of their cakes could be a little exaggerate but it all depends, you just have to wait and see. I read in their website that this family owned bakery has a rich history in the making, which I find very interesting.

We’re from Texas and my Mom lives in Hokes Bluff, we had read about Cothran’s and stopped by to get my wife a Birthday while we are here visiting. We got a Chocolate on Chocolate cake and it was sooooo good! We also got some doughnuts and they were yummy too! We’ll be back for sure!The cake is almost gone!

This place has amazing selections of donuts and pastries and I love them …. But the bad thing bout it, is that they do not use thong to grab the donuts. They are using paper which it doesn’t matter, but the fact that the employees when they’re picking up the donuts from the tray, they actually touched the donuts. If you think about it, they’re touching things like credit cards or money when they rang up customers, then they will serve the next customers, they will touched the edge of the donuts because that paper that they’re using, it slides. I watched it in my own eyes all the time. I wish the owner will invest thongs in every tray for sanitary reasons.

Greeted with a friendly welcome when I walked in. The smell of fresh baking sweetness wafting in the air, just yumminess everywhere!Great value on a dozen fresh donuts!My only concern is that they have a sign to text the word Glaze to a number to get a half a dozen donuts if you receive text messages, but it didnt work.Otherwise, I enjoyed my visit. Worst experience I’ve had with a bakery.First off, it was a train wreck trying to figure out if they would be able to even make the cake or not.I’m finally told that the Gadsden location can make it & deliver it to Boaz. So, I go to Boaz to pick it up before my daughters birthday party & I was already running late so I didn’t get the best look at it before leaving the store. But I was not happy when I got home & seen that I paid $85 for this mess. Which, I had to prepay before they would even make the cake.First pic was the inspiration pic. Granted, they told me it wouldn’t look EXACTLY like the picture but I didn’t think it would look this bad. The writing itself is embarrassing. I’m so done with this place. I’ll never do business here again.EDIT: Apparently, I was wrote about the price of the cake. After checking my bank statement, almost $100 for this cake. 😡

Absolutely the BEST donuts ever made. It was Shipley s when I was a kid. Cothrans is family I think. But they kept the same recipe a d they will literally melt in your mouth

Conveniently located. Small clean bakery full of fresh made filled, covered and glazed donuts, prepackaged cupcakes, candies and cookies. Beautiful cakes ready made.I just popped in to grab a few, the chocolate filled are heavenly, and the cream filled are a great choice too. Very fresh, excellent texture, melt in your mouth wonderful.The staff was prompt and courteous and the prices were competitive.

Bunch of kids working, took forever to be acknowledged even though they seen me they went ahead with their conversation then they couldnt find my order and the cupcakes didnt match the cake nor were they fresh.

I was sent to pick up a pastel green baby shower cake on Saturday. A lime green cake reading “Happy Birthday” was placed in front of me. After explaining to the young man working behind the counter that the cake was not right, he went and got the lady who took the order. I explained to her that an email was sent with pictures and instructions, along with 3 different phone conversations on how the cake was to be done. This woman informed that Cothran’s does not read the emails and that they only use email for pictures for style and color.. which is incorrect considering the lime green cake placed on the counter, versus the pastel green that was ordered. She was very rude and instead of staying to fix her mistake, she passed it off to someone who obviously also did not look at the email or have any idea of what the cake should have been. As she walked out to leave for the day, she was sure to ask me again that it did not need to say “Happy Birthday”, to which I reminded her of the three phone conversations AND the emailed instructions. Her reply, again, was “We don’t read the emails for instructions, only pictures”. I mentioned the THREE PHONE CONVERSATIONS, AGAIN. To which I received a “People make mistakes.” as she walked out for the day. I never once got an apology from her and she did not offer to fix the cake until I asked her what they could do to fix it. The rest of the staff was great and very pleasant. I’m upset that this one woman is the reason I won’t be using Cothran’s again. I think her name was Vicky, maybe?

Got a red velvet cake and dozen of cupcakes for a birthday. Everything is extremely good and service was great also!!!

Man they always have a friendly staff. The store is neat and clean and Krispy Kreme aint got nothing on their doughnuts! Sorry but its facts.

If you want a delicious treat or are in need of a beautiful cake, cothrans is your go-to. They have many different desserts to choose from and you can even place an order to go for a specialty cake for any occasion. After ordering a birthday cake for my mother I was not let down with the results in the cake tasted delicious. They have extremely good donuts and cupcakes as well.

Absolutely blown away by my daughters cake for her 2nd birthday. I got a chocolate sheet cake with peppa pig design and cothrans bakery absolutely nailed it. Definitely the cutest thing I have ever seen and it tasted amazing on top of it. I highly recommend cothrans

Friendly service! Not very big from the outside but once inside....wow. Not only is it well laid out but the aromas will have your mouth watering (at least mine was)!Cothrans offers a wide selection of goodies! We came to make an order for a wedding and grooms cake. Well priced and willing to make changes to fit our preferences. Sorry, no photos this time.

It is a decent bakery. The cheese straws are awesome, but cakes are just meh. I grew up with a family of amazing scratch cooks, so Im hard to impress.

Ive always been skeptical of "store-bought" red velvet cake because Ive never tasted one that came close to homemade.Even though I consider myself an amatuer baker, Ive never had the courage to attempt one. In my mind, red velvet is a pastry chefs Mount Everest.I decided to take a chance on a red velvet cupcake at Cothrans and I was pleasantly surprised! It was delicious!

They made the perfect cake for my mom’s birthday. It was beautiful. My mom loves yellow and red roses and hummingbirds. They did an excellent job. Thank you for making my moms birthday special.

Ive been eating Cothrans donuts all my life and love them. However I bought a carrot cake that no one at my house would eat it was heavy and tasteless. Now dont misunderstand me I dont have a problem with that. As I said before I have been eating Cothrans donuts for fifty years. This is the first time I bought something I didnt enjoy. I have since visited again and bought donuts and will continue.

Was good for last minute wedding, except the color was supposed to be royal blue but looked teal. I understand they helped us out in a pinch after original bakery fell through. But we still paid $125 for what was a VERY simple cake/color. We didn’t bother complaining since it was 1 day before the wedding when we picked it up and we were in a time crunch. Went to Walmart and got correct color ribbon and covered the fondant one. My talented friend even made us a bow. The cake was very tasty though!

Surprised by the selection. Never have eaten frosting on ANY cakes, just not a fan. HOWEVER, best frosting EVER! They sold little containers of it and after I had a bite of my daughters cupcake I see why. Not a big sugar consumer but this had me thinking about it for days. YUM!

Absolutely the best doughnuts Ive ever eaten, including the two largest doughnut chain stores. In fact, everything Ive ordered from Cothrans Bakery has been phenomenal. These people really know their pastries and cakes! The only reason they didnt get five stars is that some of their employees are often not very friendly. However, that will not keep me from going back and buying more!

Strawberry trellis cake is amazing! Theyre sugar cookies at Christmas time are phenomenal. And they make the best cheese straws. And their donuts are really good.

I would not recommend this bakery to my worst enemy. They ruined my whole wedding day. When I first ordered my cake I paid it in full the same day. And they told me they would call me in a few days and let me know what the delivery fee would be. I never hear from them I called and went up there 2 times and was told that I would get a call back. So finally I messaged them on Facebook and asked for the 3rd Time what the delivery fee would be and they finally got back to me. Then the next day they told me that I did not pay for my cake that I needed to bring my receipt to prove that I did. And the day of the wedding they where supposed to be at the venue at 12. We called and they forgot my cake. And when they finally did arrive they brought me the wrong cake. They are awful. They have very poor management skills.

These doughnuts far exceed any chain store. They are so fresh and delicious! I also bought a twist and strawberry cupcake. All excellent.

Best doughnuts Ive ever had, bar none! Ive been eating their 🍩 since I was a child, and have seen the generations of Cothrans that have worked there. They also have beautiful, great tasting cakes and other baked goods.

Closed on Sundays & Mondays BUT its worth the wait esp. If you get there early in the morning and the Donuts are still Nice and Warm! Some of the BEST Deserts in town come from Cothrans Bakery! Cakes, Pies, Cookies, Donuts and the list goes on! They also sale Coffee, Milk and Sodas to go with them Delishish Treats!! Stop on in or give em a call! These guys know how to put a Smile on your face for all types of Parties and Weddings Too!!

Mother in law asked this bakery to make my sons first birthday cake and smash cake. They made the birthday cake, but not the smash cake, and then gave my mother in law a hard time about getting the smash cake THE DAY BEFORE my sons party when it was ordered well in advance. Additionally, my family was told their business was not needed nor did they care if we returned. Some of you may have had good experiences here, but take your special occasions somewhere else just to be safe.

I have always heard horror stories and witnessed horrible cakes at friends weddings and birthday parties from Cothrans the past 10 years but for some reason I felt like I would give them a try because I thought how could they screw up a Peppa Pig cake with figurines on top. When I went in to order the cake the lady could not show me what the cake looked like but showed me the figurines that go on top. She said they make them all of the time and they are really cute. I felt uneasy when I left there about the order but kept reminding myself that there is no way they could screw that cake up. By the way, I ordered a month in advance. Fast forward to 3 days before the party. I still felt uneasy so I stopped in to check when I needed to pick up the cake for the party and make sure everything was still good to go. Apparently, they forgot to check my order and make sure they had enough figurines and they didnt. They werent even going to let me know! They were just going to draw Peppa on the cake which is UGLY! If I would not have gone by there 3 days before the party I would have picked up a cake on Saturday that was nothing like I ordered! I was furious! They did refund my money but did not offer anything else. I advise to only buy what you can see in the store in the case that has already been made. Everything is delicious but apparently they have issues with custom orders. Thank goodness Publix is a reliable source for cakes and can have them ready with a 24 hour notice. If you do order a cake from there ask for a full detail receipt so if they do screw up your order you have proof of what it is suppose to look like. I advise you to go somewhere else reliable!

Cake tasted and looked good... Was very upset that I was told a price and when I called back for the total they increased the price.. I spoke with the manager or owner and he continued to argue with me about it.. I would definitely say to get your quote on paper if you order from them bc they dont stand by their prices.. Luckily the cake turned out okay and tasted good though. Parking structure does need work...

Blueberry and cream cheese donuts taste like pound cake with glaze, easily best donuts Ive had in years.

Having waited 30 min online on a Sunday morning, I greedily got 3 cookies. Thats a whooping $12 just on cookies. But they were so worth it. I got: chocolate walnut, dark chocolate with peanut butter, and raisin oatmeal. My favorite was the oatmeal, just the right amount of sweetness. The other two were too sweet after a few bites but still yummy. Kudos to the staff on remaining cheerful and polite to every customer despite the never ending line. Its refreshing to see what customer services should be.

Cothrans Bakery not only did the cakes for my father and stepmothers wedding 20 years ago, but they did the cakes and catering for my wedding within the past month. The customer service and pricing could not be beat! Our cakes were exactly what we asked for and tasted incredible! As for the catering, it is not something they advertise, but will provide if asked; I liked the fact that they were not pushy about their services, but were very accommodating to their customers. The food was delivered ahead of time, was kept hot and fresh throughout our wedding, and tasted amazing! Even with it being a month later, our guests are still complimenting the food. The only complaint I have is that their food took the spotlight at my wedding!! My compliments go to Clay and his staff at Cothrans Bakery for making our wedding day so enjoyable and stress-free. And not to mention, if you walk into their bakery, there is no way you can possibly walk out without purchasing one of their treats; the smell is intoxicating!
