Copper Breaks State Park - State park in Childress, United States
Had lots of fun at the park and loved feeding the Texas Longhorns. Our camping spot was so covered in love bugs though that you couldnt walk from your tent to the picnic table without stepping on some. They got on everything an we ended up taking multiple home with us on our stuff. The lake was also drained very low so swimming was out of the question.
A last minute overnight stop on the way home. Was rainy and cool. Bathroom in our camping loop had no hot water (3 days prior).Lake was very low.Probably wont visit again.
Amazing night sky; bring your binoculars or a telescope. Nice hiking trails. You can hear coyotes howling after sunset.
Love this park. The camper sites are a bit close, (not parking lot stylebut there are not that many and you never feel crowded. This park is all about the hiking trails. Awesome views in its own little canyon.
Great place! Park host let us feed the longhorns!
My girlfriend and I love this park. The neat little events they have in the park are really cool. Saturday September 3 they offered a moon gazing with a ranger and brought out his personal telescope to view it with. He was very knowledgeable and excited to be hosting the event. Thank you Stewart and copper breaks for a great weekend.
Its a pretty but not well known park. You can picnic for a day or camp. It has restrooms, showers, swimming & fishing, hiking and many "night skies" programs.
Two night stay and the ONLY negative was the awful HEAT. It was HOT HOT HOT, so during the day we stay inside but early morning and evening we were out. We camped in a small RV so our site was in Comanche. Site was asphalt, with a picnic table with cover, fire ring (fire ban was enforced so no fires), water and electricity. Verizon for us had two to three bars. No wifi. This is a Dark Sky Park, so visitors are asked to keep all exterior lighting off at night. If you visit on the weekend, be sure to take advantage of any of the Ranger sponsored programs offered. Once the moon set, the sky and stars were beautiful. One centrally located bath house that while dated, was clean. The Park store/museum is going through renovations, so the store portion is very small and the museum is closed. Plenty of hiking trails but bring lots of water. Didnt see any snakes, but during the Moon Watch with a Ranger, he used a UV flashlight and found quite a few scorpions on the ground. Overall a GREAT park that we will visit again, but next time in the fall or spring.
What a great place! It really is in the middle of nowhere but that’s what makes it so great to see the stars! We hung out during the day too and the whole place looked very maintained and clean. We were actually (at most pointsthe only people there which was also cool. The bathroom facilities could use a little upkeep though, the best bathroom building is the one by the pointy picnic shelters ( where the RV parking isthis is definitely an import thing to know especially if you’re planning on being there all day. Oh and also the trails are great, there are long ones, short ones and (obliviouslya large lake to hang out and swim at. Definitely recommend!
Excellent place. Great programs with the rangers and the Star Walk was awesome!
Camped for 3 nights mid November. It was beautiful. I recommend bringing extra blankets cause it can get really cold at night. The rocky ledge trail is a must. And stars at night are big and bright.
Beautiful park. Needs more shade trees. Bathrooms ok
Great campsite. A lot of green, wide open space. Kid friendly, mountain biking, and hiking trail. Was quite windy one of our days there. Id definitely go again.
I was so impressed by this little park! It is not that popular, but it should be!The views and trails are amazing and beautiful! Views of the lake and canyon- so pretty! The picnic area was impressive with shaded yurt like picnic tables.
This park was a surprise that we will definitely visit again. Didnt get to spend much time there but the pictures dont begin to capture the character and terrain of this park. The water was low possibly due to dry conditions and the construction of a new bridge right now and the boat ramp was dry. Still looked like you could kayak in the lake though. In addition to the park, the visitors center is large and has a lot to offer. It goes a long way to tell the history of the area and has some great artifacts and displays.
Dont have any pics because the best thing was the meteor shower we just happened to catch - yay light preserve! The rest was blah because its just not a beautiful, engaging, enticing location - middle of nowhere, really.
I would say it is the best state park to go to in Texas, it has anything you need like water, shade, private camping, fishing, swimming, amazing sunsets, bike trails and WAY more.
Good for winters. Dont come here to die in summer when it is 111°F.I only came to do astrophotography. My only activity was from 3 am to 5 am. It was very hard to survive during the day. There were snakes in the pond, so swim at your own risk.Firewood and coal werent allowed due to the risk of burning the whole place down.Dont book the places at the Group Camping area. There are no trees and killer dusty winds. I am not kidding, too much dust. Couldnt even sleep at night because of dust.Fortunately, I found a clear sky to click the galaxy. PS - I am a beginner photographer. Go easy on me. The attached photo is from my Google pixel 6 pro.
A great place to set up your telescope.
Nice park with large, level sites. The park is well kept and has a friendly staff with some good hiking trails. We were in Comanche Camps area, site 24 and it was huge.
An incredible experience. I caught 25 perch, watched falcons fly, and saw the milky way! The campsites are beautiful and we plan on returning soon! Be sure to grab a free explorers pack for the kids and you can borrow fishing gear too!
A hidden gem in Texas. Very calm, laid back park with an old school playground. We stayed here on our way home and the park had everything we needed. Beautiful sunset and a trail for night sky viewing.
Our first camping trip. The experience was amazing! The park rangers were kind and very personable. There were fun, educational activities to do during our stay which were fun and engaging. There is a mini museum and shop at the headquarters, it has useful little trinkets and gifts. The land itself is absolutely beautiful and so cool with the greenish-blueish copper dirt, quartz, and permanent embedded waves from ancient waters of long ago, 💯 recommend this hidden gem.
Stayed for 2 nights to enjoy star gazing but only got a one good night. It rained and cloudy the second night. Got scary because of the wind and lightning. Heard the coyotes howling too.But we had fun hiking the trail. There was area that the grass was high and kinda scary coz you can’t see the trail but lots of signs where to go so you won’t get lost. View at the trails are amazing! We didn’t get to see the long horns. We didn’t know where they are. Saw the sign though that says Longhorns 😁Lots of lizards and grasshoppers, butterflies and flies 😂 1 road runner. We will go back!!
Friendly rangers and staff, small lake is great for rafting, kayak or canoe. They have a designated swim area. They have nice trails that are pretty rugged which involve some light climbing, I navigated okay and Im over 60, excellent sites and primitive camping, although I wouldnt recommend July or Augustwith temps over 100 unless you have a camper with ac. We got HOT 🔥!
Beautiful terrain, lots of wildlife (best seen just after sunrise or before sunset). Campgrounds are clean and well maintained... I had a great conversation with the camp host Bullet, yes his real name, he had lots of knowledge about the park. (ask him to show you his bullet tattoo, he said he got it when he was just two weeks old😁)Hiking trails are really nice, but be aware of the horse flies, if you keep moving they wont bother you too much. The camp was not very crowded and my hikes on the trailers where completely solitary for the most part.
Clean- beautifully kept, quiet with cool covered shelters for shade. We hiked, biked and fished. Swimming didnt look all that appealing. Stayed up to witness the night sky- gorgeous!!
Such a beautiful park! There is a lot of trails and they are all a good length. The sky is gorgeous at night and you can see everything! The park rangers were all very nice and the trailer spots were huge. There is a lot of space between your neighbors. There is also a covered table. My only complaint is the bathrooms. I know you can’t control the bugs (or giant spiders in this casebut the bathrooms were not in good shape.
Very clean and manicured campground. The views are amazing on the roads in the park and there is an abundance of animals. It was hot on our visit, but still enjoyable. Negatives, are few, but here they are; the bathrooms are pretty dirty, probably just old, the RV sites are really unlevel and the swimming area is very shallow, but not much one can do about that. All in all, I would come back, just maybe in cooler weather.
A small but mighty state park, put it on your bucket list! The night sky viewing area is incredible!! I had so much fun exploring the hiking trails!!
Scenic High Plains state park with seemingly something for everyone. Texas bluebonnet flowers were blooming. The staff is exceptionally helpful and nice. I hope to return.
We stayed here, as many do, for an overnighter. It was surprisingly a nice place. Small and very quiet, we were pleased with its feel of truly being in the wilderness. On our way to our next destination we all agreed that we would like to stay here longer next time. We were unlucky and had a cloudy evening for our one night there. The park is a little bit outdated, but thats fine. It had plenty of what was needed. The Covered shelters are quite nice and interesting. The MTB trails here are supposed to be very good, but - next time... we will be back.
What a beautiful state park! I never saw so many bright stars in a black as night sky and the Milky Way was very evident and visible from horizon to horizon. The amenities were clean and the roads in and about were well paved and marked. I tented amidst abundant nature as I heard owls and coyotes singing and hooting all through the night. A pack of coyotes even ran through my campsite thinking I was asleep and unaware. Pretty rock striations and rugged nature symbolizing west Texas evident everywhere. My only concern was that there was no cell coverage/internet access with the rest of the world.
We visited this park because it was the closest dark sky park to our house. This was our first camping trip with our 3 young children, 5, 3, and 1. The campsite we reserved was in the group camp area by the big pond. There was no electricity, or showers, but there was water. The bathroom was a bit of a hike, we just drove. This was a really good experience as the stars are so vivid here compared to in the city. There were so many coyotes making noise all night long as well as owls and various other animal noises. There are a lot of cliffs and areas that could be dangerous for small children so just be prepared. We only stayed one night but would have liked to have more time for exploring. Nice hiking, next the I would probably not being small children. Also the cell service was about zero. The email confirmation and the website both have inaccuracies. The park office closes at 4:30 and the gate closes at 8. If you arrive after 4:30 your reservation documents will be in an envelope with your name on it in taped to the kiosk by the head quarters.
Great state park. In our top five lf favorite parks. Super clean facilities. Great spacing between campsites. Really cool shelters at sites. Stunning vistas and views. There is good hiking, both moderate and family friendly. Theres a cool little museum. The amazing dark sky was as promised! Definitely worth a visit!
This was a great camping experience. We had a tent site with water roughly 75 feet from the bathrooms. The various hiking trails are great and very relaxing and not to much trouble. Didnt catch any fish, but we never do.. the park was excellent; however some campers need to learn some respect for their follow campers.. at night more than any time. There is WiFi at headquarters, as service (AT&Twasnt nil in almost all locations within the park. There are towns north and south of the park, roughly 15 mins either way. Overall, we would return. 10/10
The views here are incredible! The sky at night was so clear and the stars were out in abundance! The trails have lots of scenic views! The swimming was great, especially with the heat! The heat... The one down side to the trip! It was 100-110 while we were there with no rain, lots of wind, and little shade. So definitely more of a spring/fall camp ground when its cooler! We will be going back!
My husband, toddler son, and I stopped by for about eighty minutes on a Sunday afternoon because it was not far out of the way on our road trip. We had a picnic lunch then did the juniper ridge trail to stretch our legs. The trail isnt all that hard. It has a fair number of steps but no difficult footing for normal healthy people and even my two year old was able to go up and down the steps on his own for the most part. You get some feel for doing actual hiking in a place that is otherwise mostly flat and you get a nice view of the lake and get to see some cool fossilized sand ripples. Because of covid the museum was closed and so were some camping areas, some but not all of the restrooms, and at least one fishing pier. Overall it was a nice place to eat and stretch our legs. Its not as beautiful as the more famous state parks but it had nice facilities and I would probably come back to camp one day.
Reserved online. Received a confirmation call on the day of arrival. Staff arranged for me to arrive after hours with no hassle! Very nice and well maintained facilities. Just an overnighter at the Big Pond Campground, #41.
Nice park. Not as many trails as other state parks but its well kept. I wouldnt go for a swim in swimming area, its mucky. All park rangers are super friendly.
Copper Breaks is amazing. What a hidden gem. You wont believe the terrain until you get in here. Lots of great hiking trails. Plenty with elevation change and plenty without. Many of the trails are great for mountain biking as well. The bathroom facilities were super clean... Although they pack soap, so bring your own. The camp sites are great. Well appointed with tent pads, a grill, a fire pit with another grill Incorporated into it and a picnic table in a concrete slabLoved it here.
Beautiful state park to visit! The Park Rangers are some of the nicest people we have met and they seem to always have some events going on. This place has a ton of Native American and Texas history and the Rangers are always willing to tell you about it.
This is a fun family getaway if you love hiking or exploring the plains. The lake is pretty brushy and not a great fishing hole, and I def would not get in there. But the camp grounds are clean and the stars at night couldn’t be more beautiful!
Visited this State Park from Nov 16th-Nov 20th for a training course, the Park Staff was very friendly and knowledgeable about the park and history, park grounds were well maintained and clean, hiking and biking trails were awesome, and the facilities were clean and very nice as well. This park is a great place to do night photography as it is an International Dark Sky Park, so you will be able to have some awesome night time viewing of the stars.Plenty of different activities to do here from camping, fishing, mountain biking, hiking, and more. I was even able to check out the official Texas longhorn herd and learn about their history while at the park.If you are in the Quanah area and looking for a great place to visit, I would highly recommend Copper Breaks State Park to anyone.
If you are in Quanah, Texas for anything you need to take the 10 miles drive South to the state park! Full of amazing views, hiking trails, longhorns, and many many more things you have to go check out!
A nice place to visit! Some good hikes and the campsites are clean and offer options of group sites, close together more open sites, and more secluded equestrian sites. We opted for an equestrian site and it allow the night sky to blow us away! The real star here (pun intendedis the night sky. After the beautiful sunset we woke up towards midnight to see the milky way and the diamonds in the sky! Well worth a visit!
This place is THE best Texas State Park in North central Texas! Museum was nice, clean and informative. Staff was very helpful and friendly. Well maintained trails with gorgeous views of the lake.
Great place to get away. If you are camping though bring your own toilet paper! At the camp site I went to someone took all the toilet paper at night.
Clean park, nice trails. The star gazing at night is excellent! We saw numerous shooting stars during this visit. Small lake, lots of picinic areas. Hidden gem.
This place has amazing views great camping sites and a great abundances of Wildlife around. Great fishing holes and night skies that are a site to behold. I went to see the Perseid meteor shower and unfortunately it was a cloudy night hope to call again soon on a clear night. But I did catch my first Bobcat to photograph.
