Coonawarra Units - in Penola, Australia
I wish I took photos. This motel is NOT what the pictures look like. Everything is overgrown outside. Weeds all over room pathways. You cant use BBQ area its like a forest. The washing line is in a jungle. The beds are extremely old and springs galore. As soon as we checked in we were automatically charged for our three nights stay before we even made it to our room. Dont get me wrong Ill stay anywhere usually. We came to the Coonawarra to taste and buy the wines. This was meant to be cheap affordable accommodation to stay in but this was extremely disappointing. The windows are filthy. The bathrooms filthy (Thank goodness I had thongs). I even went and brought paper cups, plates, knives ect just so I didnt have to use theirs as you know they are just rinsing those things in the sink if your lucky. The pool area has been left to wreck and ruin. The heater was old and hardly worked. You can just tell this is horrible for the locals who were all amazing btw!!! The ONLY thing positive I can comment on is the sheets were clean.....I think 🤞.
Quiet. Place has been well maintained in the past but is very clearly being let go. The gardens must have once been beautiful but are being reclaimed by weeds and are overgrown. Was clean but you can see the rooms were being let go too. Blinds didnt close properly, for example. Spider webs building up in the roof. This place will be a bargain for a budding motel owner in a year or two on present trajectory! Its a shame the owners dont read Google reviews!
I’ve stayed here three times in the past four years, and it’s clear that the business has changed hands recently. The grounds are overgrown and not maintained, with grass creeping above your ankles. What was once a proud garden is a moribund and decrepit space. The rooms are tired. We found grime in the sink and shower, and there isn’t even a space for the toilet paper; it just sits on top of the toilet itself. Windows filthy, spiderwebs everywhere, cold rooms. The breakfast option was simply packaged cereal, but without milk.Seriously - stay elsewhere. This business is disgracefully neglected and embarrassing. They’re almost waiting for a Gordon Ramsay episode. Stay in Penola. Stay anywhere. This place is horrendous.
The place has definitely seen better days. On the positive side the rooms were spacious and bed was clean and comfortable. However, it was cold and not easy to heat, the windows were filthy, the ceilings full of cobwebs, the shower had not enough pressure to get shampoo out of your hair.Breakfast was a joke (previously frozen plain white toast in a plastic bag), some stale biscuits, no place to sit, instant coffee and teabags...we had nothing (apart from the biscuit which was in original packaging but still managed to be stale). The fridge was mouldy inside etc etc
I do not understand how Coonawarra Units are rated 3 stars. It is a 1.5 star place at best. The photos on the website show a past version, not the current place. There is a long list of unacceptable practices at this business. There is no welcome compedium about the premises or the area. The safety sign on the room door indicates that guests jump a 1.5 meter security fence to reach the safety area.Breakfast items that would only suit children are offered. A surveillance camera is in the “breakfast room” (a room where you have to help yourself to itemswith no sign to indicate what and where this footage is being used for. There is a sign indicating to restrict items to take for breakfast. Food handling breaches: snap lock bags of individual pieces of cheap white bread with no use by date. Butter not refrigerated. A mouldly fridge. Stale tea bags. The room is musty, with a ceiling full of cobwebs and a dusty wardrobe is not fit for clothes. The curtains are broken and dusty. The cushions and throw rugs are stained and are obviously not cleaned regularly. The crockery is insufficient and mismatched and half a tea towel is provided- yes - the tea towel has been cut in half. The afternoon we arrived was cold and the room had no heating on. The heater was old and noisy that it could not be kept on overnight when trying to sleep. The garden is neglected and overgrown and there is a large tree branch over part if the driveway. The list continues …This place is a poor reflection of a wonderful part of Australia - the Coonawarra region - which is warm, welcoming and refined. We will not be back and recommend that others learn from our experience and find some of the more welcoming places available.
The basic breakfast was appreciated, but otherwise we wouldnt stay again. The windows were filthy, spider webs throughout the ceiling. No kettle in the room despite there being tea and coffee, no supplies to wash the dishes, and no daily housekeeping.
We knew we were booking three star. And understand what that means...we are ok with a bit tired etc, having stayed here before. However, we will not be back. Our room was not clean or close to clean. Dirty dishes, scum on the shower, grubby carpet, filthy windows and dusty curtains. There wasnt even a teatowel in the room. Breakfast is provided in the breakfast room. You go and collect your provisions. Good in theory but there was no bread or a tray to carry anything on. There are random items lying around the complex, torn flags, gardens a mess - it feels quite neglected. Maybe has been sold recently? Such a shame as we love the area....but no more visits from us.
This place did not meet my expectations for the price we paid. Room was updated. Bed was not comfortable. Shower head was not great and fridge leaked for two days. Hardly any ammenities fit us to use like toilet paper, towels etc I just expected more for what we paid. Would not recommend nor stay here again unfortunately.
Our room was a good size, but needs redecorating. You need a car to get anywhere from here.
Nice old rooms with high ceilings and exposed bricks, handy location although it can get a bit noisy in those front rooms close to the highway.Beautiful setting with surrounding vineyards and the garden/gazebo/outdoor pool. However, rooms dont seem to be regularly serviced under the new management. Cleanliness could definitely be improved.
Was contacted at last minute to say room was unavailable. Offered another room that was way bellow what was originally booked. Then room was not as promised. After much negotiations was offered refund. Being a local to this area i would not recommend friends or family to stay much better option in penola.
Bad service, we had been out for the day and as we turned up to book in we received a text message to say our room was unavailable. The discount offered was barely worth it and the next room was not as promised. Left extremely disappointed
These units are great. Smack bang in the middle of heaps of wineries that you can walk to. The Coonawarra waking track is on your door step. Breakfast was very basic but what do you expect from a motel. Next door is Chardonnay lodge where you can get dinner, just make sure you make a booking. There is a empty pool here, would have been nice to swim in it. I’m not sure when they will fill it again.
My husband and I in our 50’s yet feeling like 35 year olds thoroughly loved the rooms and the extra touches that are given. I can not recommend this place more for a short or long romantic get away. Thankyou to the owners for opening up your home away from home to my little family. Joanne and Frank Perri
Booking was advertised with breakfast. However what we got were a couple of cereal and biscuit packets for two days. Room was big but there were a lot of cobwebs and bugs inside. The carpet was not clean as well. Cutlery provided was not clean and adequate for a family of 3. Location is not very convenient as the nearest shops are in Penola which is approximately 8.7 kms. Would not recommend. Better off staying at Penola.
Absolutely Lovely with excellent Resteraunt on site. Very peaceful
This has been one of my best accommodations in Australia. The room sizes are big, very clean and great hosts.
The room we stayed in was very large, but probably seemed larger due to the very high ceilings. It stayed quite cool considering the 40° heat outside. Very easy access to most of Coonawarras wineries and Penola. Biggest downside was the large bed was very hard (the kids beds were ok - should have swapped). The provided continental breakfast was cereal with milk and toast with condiments.
Stay here periodically..still consider this the best in the Coonawarrra
Clean and friendly service.
Close to 5 wineries ...walk! Needs more sound deadening and more cooking equipment.
Older style, but so spacious and pleasant. Amenities are user friendly and Plenty of parking.
Pretty good overall. Only downside is old electronics and lots of spiders. Other than that everything was good including the free breakfast.
Nice garden, nice people, room is very clean and comfortable, highly recommend!
Colazione ridicola
Great place to stay and dine.
Very comfortable. Clean well presented standard room with in room breakfast items which meant we could eat and leave early. very pleasant staff who were welcoming. The jumbuck doona was like home.Worth another visit.
Friendly staff, clean and tidy . Great location , central to all the wineries.
We were looked after well on a long term stay. Close to arty Penola
Excellent accommodation lovely restaurant and beautiful surroundings all within the Coonawarra wine region.
Nice and clean
老夫妻经营的旅馆,超出一般汽车旅馆很多;花园美丽,餐厅可口~~
Beautiful location right in the heart of the vineyards that surround it. Friendly staff.
Very spacious and clean rooms ideal for family and right in the middle of the Coonawarra strip.
