Coon Hollow Trailhead - Hiking area in Lead, United States
Storm Mountain is one of my favorite mountain bike trail systems in the hills. You won’t find any buffed out machine built trails here. Just old fashioned hand dug rake and ride with lots of roots and rocks that will turn you into a better rider. The Flume Trail is pretty cool too. The Air Force viewpoint is a short hike from this trail head, and Boulder Hill spur/loop too.
Love it. Plenty of great trail access. Quiet and easy to get to.
A solid hike around the bend! This 3 mile loop has many biking and walking paths where there are a few areas one may get off the trail along the way without a map to guide, however it is still very ambient and pretty. I recall whilst lost on a separate trail a solemn reminder of nature and regrowth where i assume was a contained forest fire. Seeing the looming pine tower over their fallen ancestors all burnt and truncated bodies, you begin to wonder about your impact on everything, how life will continue after youre gone. Once back on the trail you get a beautiful overlook from a ledge peering through a dense thicket, a valid attempt to mask the greater hill that envelopes this solemn valley. Some of the rocks near the end create beautiful rugged formations, plates and sharp edges that tickled my interest. Its real close to my house so its easy to drive to, would recommend.
Great trail head for multiple trails
For the advanced bike rider. Lots of rocks. My son damaged his bike on this trail and he was only able to go 300 yards from the entrance. Poorly marked trail and very narrow. No gravel.
Really enjoyed this hike. Great spot to get on the flume.
Seems underused almost abandoned at first, but perseverance yields some pretty solid trails. Fun now, and great potential to be excellent.
So much room for activities
Nice hike, easily accessible
One of the best trails in the Black Hills!
Great six mile round trip to Air Force Vista.
Nice, well marked trail with great views, pine trees.
Very nice trail - some elevation change and one easy water crossing. Lovely view along the top. I really enjoy loop trails and I would repeat this one often.
Amazing mountain bike trails!!!
Super pretty out here, trail was a littttle narrow but Im definitely gonna hike it again
Super cool trail
Nice hike in the trees on the flume trail for most of it. I love loop trails and this being so close to Rapid its great. Mountain bike would also do well on this one.
Very good trail, loop starts about 2 miles in but you can keep hiking on the flume trail for a while.
This loop hike takes about an hour and 45 minutes. It is part of the Old Flume Trail. Easily accessible and beautiful scenery.
Owns bones
Easy hike for the family.
Pretty trail! Good for hikers of all ages and ability.
Nice views, good trail. Generally well maintained. Not a lot of parking.
Went for a morning run on this trail. It’s a good single-track trail. Steep in a few areas, and really rocky in others, but for the most part a great getaway. Very pretty. The trail continues into another and could keep going if a longer hike or jog is desired.Posted, no bikes or motor vehicle allowed.I am from Mid South Dakota and hadn’t been out to Rapid Before, it was easy to find and a great place to go out.
One of my favorites
A little icy in places but otherwise good
Nice flat hike, unique ponderosa/oak mix. Aspens and a lookout 2.5 miles in
Get place to hike
Love it.
We took the flume trail, #50 from the parking lot. Very nice trail especially when we got up higher. I only saw the flume name, not sure why it wasnt the coon hollow trail that we were on. The map at the trailhead was kind of hard to make out, not very detailed. We followed the trail for about two miles, crossed a dirty road started up the other side of road, again on #50, not too far later, we came across another sign with an easier to read map and info about who made the trail from Ellsworth AFB. We turned around at this point because it was not going to be the loop we expected. What I liked about the trail was it wasnt really one that went up and down and up and down, pretty much when we got near the top of the mountain, the trail was fairly wide and kept at the same altitude. When we headed back, when we got back to the road we took another trail which looked to be for bikers which ended up putting us above the #50 trail about 3.5 miles into the hike, using the phone which was tracking our progress, we went down the hill to join the #50 trail and headed back to the coon hollow trailhead. About 5 miles total in about 2 hrs.
