Cong Abbey in Galway
Description
Privilege
Very nice place. Recomendation to go to the forrest close to cong‘s abbey and ashford castle. See pictures..
MoreFor truly old and wonderful craftsmanship of centuries gone by, give this Abbey some time when youre in Cong.
MoreCong is lovely. Excellent historic buildings in good context. Some of the modern buildings are very poorly placed and clash with the historic. Maybe there should be a review of the total architecture of the village
MoreCong is such a beautiful place, the Abbey is very nice. There is a parking right in front (very smalland there is another parking 5 or 10 min walking (much bigger). The abbey has a little forest to have a walk. Cong is beautiful any time of the year, but in my opinion the best time to visit is Autumn, the view is stunning with all the colours and leaves on the ground.
MoreThe abbey was fine, but there was a forest afterwards that was the real selling! The pathways through the forest are wholesome and beautiful, will recommend 10 out of 10!
MoreAmazing! The breakfast, room and hosptailities were excellent throughout! Great views of the local countryside and near Cong. I highly recommend visiting the small village when one gets the change and walking the nature trail as well.
MoreI was only at the abbey a short while but it and the grounds are lovely.
Wonderful old ruins. Definitely imparts a sense of history. Not a lot of services and could use more information about the different rooms you can walk around.
MoreHistory in every step. The beautiful crystal clear waters are something very special. A must on the visit
MoreThe living history here is amazing. See Walls from the early 1000s is an unique experience. You shall visit this place when hosted at Ashford Castle. A must seem place
MoreHistorically interesting. Lots to see. Harry Clarke Stained glass. Has to be seen to be Believed.
MoreGreat place to visit. Beautiful views at every turn.
Wonderful romantic place. We will come back and make a walk through the great park.
MoreCong Abbey is a lovely spot entrenched in history and fame. From its ancient walls, to its wonderfully maintained gardens it is truly a sight to behold and is an absolute must if youre visiting Ireland for the first time.It is also situated int he village of Cong where the Quiet Man with John Wayne and Maureen OHara was filmed and so for any movie buff or fan of the film itself this place is an essential stop on any tour of our beautiful country. The walk around Cong Abbey is serene and picturesque and it gives a general feeling of quiet ease and peace at any time of day or night(if youre feeling a little restless).Cong village is very cute and offers a few lovely restaurants and pubs where youll be treated with a delicious pint of Guinness or if youre feeling a little adventurous one of their lovely local craft beers. All in all, its definitely worth a journey to Cong and its Abbey for a few nights.
MoreBeautiful place, bridge, ruins, park and pub/restaurants in the area. Apparently, the town was used in a movie called The Silent Man and in another French movie which I dont know the name.
MoreBeautiful little village with lovely little walks by the river
Cong is a unique place to visit on the gateway to Connemara. From the ancient abbey to the Hollywood memorabilia in the local museum and beautiful lisloughrey pier, this South Mayo village is well worth a visit.
MoreNeat place to wander around
A beautiful place to visit. So peaceful. Lots of small little businesses and cute coffee shops in the village.
MoreSo much history in beautiful surroundings. Great place to explore.
A really cool old Abby along the river. We drove up from Galway - well worth the trip, there are lots to see along the way as well.
MoreBeautiful village, pity about all the timber lorries driving through the narrow streets. Not suitable for that kind of transport
MoreLovely area. Peaceful. Had a pleasant afternoon.. good to know there were clean public toilets available
MoreA beautiful village/town. Loads of scenery, beautiful walks of various degrees of fitness and just very picturesque. And the weather was amazing too. Cant wait to return
MoreInteresting although somewhat scant remains, in a beautiful spot adjacent to running water. Free to enter. Worth an hour or more either to wander in the woods too and/or get lunch locally.
MoreBeautiful ruins to view
Great place to visit and wonderful experience! A lot of nature and great trails to explore. In the village it is possible to find good restaurants and hotels. I definitely recommend Cong.
MoreFantastic placeAbsolutely worth the visit
Ive walked around the abbey since I was a kid and Im 37 now.The yew trees are my favorite. Well worth a visit and steeped in history.
MoreIncredible energy around the Abbey. Take your time to explore it
Very nice place near Ashfors Castle. There is also a very nice church you can visit only on Sunday.
MoreNice quiet place. The quiet man slept as well.
Drive from Galaway via Oughterard to this place was out of this world. Cong abbey is good and has great scenic views here. Place worth visiting.Fun fact time: Cong in Irish means narrow.. (courtesy: History boat trip on the nearby lake)
MoreLove this area and the woodland walk to Ashford Castle.
Beautiful place to visit. Lovely scenery and walk.
Nice spot to visit. Very well kept ruins, clean inside and not to modified for tourists. Itssa great way to enter the forest
MoreLoved this place again.Quiet Man area and religious centre too.Well signed and described.Very interested in the monks fishing house on the River Cong which leads to Ashford Castle. Also beside Quiet Man statue. Toilets and village about 100m away too.
MoreBeautiful spot it can bring you back in time. Lovely spaces for a picnic underneath the trees or relaxing in the sunshine
MoreWhat an amazing place to visit. Beautiful walks at the back of the Abbey too.Remains of a Augustinian Abbey built in c1200.
Morelovely spot.. free to walk the grounds and into the forest .. parking at the church
MoreThis Abbey is set in beautiful surrounding and needs to be visited during the day as along a river bank. Its a beautiful old building with stones jutting out if the wall. If in Cong be sure and take a walk around it.
MoreNice walk around an ancient Abbey and the peaceful grounds which lead you into a wood alongside the river cong.
MoreA beautiful little town and for us this Abbey and the nature walk behind it were real highlights. My son enjoyed exploring all the stones and we learned about the history of the place and had a lovely morning in nature.
MoreA nice and calm place to learn about the history with beautiful spots around. There is a museum dedicated to the movie the quiet man which was shot here and the bridge in the village is famous for that as well. There is plenty of parking spaces to explore the canal and the Abbey.
MoreGorgeous place, picturesque and clean. Beautiful weather today for a stroll. Keep walking and you come up to Ashford Castle grounds.
MoreThe ruins of Cong Abbey are set on the banks of a river and while the ruins themselves are nothing special, the forest trail is a lovely walk.A great place to visit for the day. Is definitely a nice change from being limited to local outings and is only 45 minutes drive from Galway.
MoreWonderful historic place, with Castles... hunting lodges.. ancient ruins of of old monasteries, and the beautiful Cong river and lough Corrib with a dollop of hollywood thrown in.
MoreOk for a visit if u are around the area. Location there is beatiful, some amazing tracks to walk in the forest by the river that are worth it to do, and also the little town is nice and very focus on the movie the quiet man, as it was filmed there
Morewonderful place to visit. Its so beautiful especially with the river and the monks fishing house.A not that much touristic place with a romantic touch surrounded by beautiful nature.
