CommonWealth in Berkeley
Description
Privilege
This is a hidden gem. Stopped by for coffee and ended up staying for hours snacking and sipping. Very friendly staff, good booth seating, and great selection of food too. Will be coming back for the pub treatment later. Probably a good place to catch some football (soccerwith some pints later.
MoreDelicious food, savory beer, and great service. Will definitely be back.
Possible to look at Oakland Roots matches
Love the atmosphere, staff, and drinks. The food selection and draft beers are much more limited than pre-pandemic but Im just glad theyre still open!
MoreLove this place. I spent a lot of time here pre-pandemic and after staying away from any indoor dining for two full years, I was happy to see that they had not only survived, but were also very COVID-conscious (beyond local mandates). Under different ownership now, with slightly smaller menu, but Commonwealth still has good coffee and food, great beer, a very warm and welcoming vibe, and wonderful staff.
MoreBeer and coffee, great selection. Watched Liverpool game with bunch of other soccer fan crowds, extra fun.
MoreGood food, good variety of beers, ciders, wine.
I liked this place. It felt very quaint and like it could have multiple different vibes going at one time.
MoreNice neighborhood bar/restaurant. Very friendly. Good pastries
Great place great food and drinks
Long wait times. I was scolded by the staff for walking to the restroom without a mask. If you’re gonna yell at patrons for not wearing a mask while going to the bathroom, you better provide extra masks for free. Saying “sorry, we ran out” is not an acceptable answer, especially when most other places don’t require them so people don’t carry them.
MoreLove the breakfast sandwich and would highly recommend the lavender latte with oatmilk. Perfect temperature, lovely presentation, friendly staff.
MorePeople are warm, friendly, with a selection of beer and wine. The pretzels come with cheese and some kind of Dijon mustard.
MoreLovely neighborhood spot. Nice local brews and ciders. Food looked interesting and people were friendly.
MoreOne of my favorite pubs. Great place for a few pints, a perfectly made scotch egg, and a place to watch a soccer match. The staff is friendly and kind, the ambience is comfortable, and the food great. I highly recommend.
MoreThe mocha and Cortado are spot on and brewed with perfection. Very nice English setup and decor.
MoreGreat bar/cafe/lunch spot. The staff is always super nice and I always enjoy the music the play. Oh and the house made veggie burger is tasty af!
MoreCool pub style cafe/restruant/bar. Delicious food with great vegan and vegetarian friendly options. Fun edgy atmosphere with great staff.
MoreWent on a Sunday morning, & practically had the place to ourselves. They were out of a few things on the menu, but service was friendly & fast. Breakfast sandwich & the pickled veggies were delicious.
MoreLove this bar! Great people, great atmosphere, great drinks and food. There are rarely crowded and they always show my desired football games... with sound!
MoreDrinks were good. Cool place to chill. First time visiting and we received a warm welcome. I will for sure be back!
MoreReally cool, albeit small English pub with delicious food. If you are going to come here and watch a match - GET HERE EARLY! Otherwise grab a breakfast Sammie and a cup of tea and enjoy a delicious breaky.
MoreThe food was really enjoyable. They have a bunch of beers and ciders on tap. I need to stop by after work. : The roast beef sandwich was so good I posted another picture.
MoreThe vibe is chill but classy, the tap list is curated, the coffee is on point and the food is hella good. This place earns five stars everytime I visit for whatever Im in the mood for.
MoreWent here last night with three friends. We were looking for a traditional English pub and this got the highest ratings in Oaktown on many review sites. I’m English and I wouldn’t say this is completely authentic (more American beers than English for example), but it has an English pub vibe, good food and beer available and the staff were really friendly. I’m vegan and was able to get plenty of vegan-specific options to eat. Drank the London Pride which was a excellent. All in all a good experience and I’ll go back.
MoreThe best traditional British-style pub food in Northern California. I spent a year in the UK and this place nails it. The attention to detail in the food does not go unnoticed.
MoreI wish we had a folksy neighborhood beer pub like this nearby. Instead, we occasionally trek downtown to this little gem and enjoy the casual vibe, tasty eats, and nice selection of beers and ciders with the locals. They make good use of limited space with small tables, booths, and bar seating. Intimate setting makes us feel like were in Ireland or England.
MoreVery tasty scotch eggs here - although the yolks in them are not runny so I’m not sure they’re cooked on site. Either way, great atmosphere, service and food here. A great place to stop at for a quick, simple breakfast.
MoreSuper nice folks here! They put me on a table where I could charge my phone and everything. I was able to get some work done as well and they have wifi which really was a difference maker. I would surely be back. Their cold brew "press" is really neat! Great coffee- I can only imagine how everything else on the menu is! Thanks guys
MoreThe bar itself is absolutely wonderfully cozy. I have many great memories in the past about it. Recently came back for their English breakfast and it was a bit disappointing to be honest, nothing special. Feels like something I could make on a lazy morning. Its definitely more a local hipster bar than an english soccer bar which is what we were hoping for(and they advertise to be). They didnt even have any of their tvs on for soccer. And the proprietress at the front gave off a weird nervous, fake and entitled vibe which was off putting. Definitely not a warm hostess needed to represent the front of the house. Came away pretty disappointed.
MoreEdited 3/23/19: I went back for brunch and it was quick and yummy! They even offered vegan options, and vegetarian egg dishes. A plus! No decaf coffee, which bummed out my mother in law.Original review: I only got a beer here (which was good). The food looked yummy and of quality.
MoreNice place. Good food amd service. Music a bit loud for a cafe. Wi-Fi slow but stable. More of a bar than a cafe. A latte was 4 bucks, but the small size of a single restaurant cup. Well dine though. They did not have soy. Very friendly corner bar atmosphere. Ill be back.
MoreLaid back ambiance with a good selection of beer. Food is above average, and we especially like the scotch eggs. Their happy hour selection isnt extensive too but thats fine. Five stars is well deserved as I requested to order the baked mars bar, which is no longer part of their menu, and they graciously accommodated me! Thanks for such exceptional service.
MoreThis super friendly pub let us watch the Sounders semi-finals match. The staff is wonderful - professional, welcoming and smart. We enjoyed our drinks and food. The French Onion soup was good comfort food.It was crowded when we first arrived but thinned out by 9. Street parking is easy here.
MoreWent to this bar for New Year Eves celebration. It is a pretty small bar with really nice ambiance. The place was packed at that time, but the bartenders managed to distribute sparkling wine to all of us. The bagpipe show was impressive.
MoreThis Is the quintessential neighborhood bar. The owners are super friendly and welcoming and the bartenders have your back. I almost dont want the secret to get out because then the down-to-earth vibe will change and it wont be the same. However, more business means they will flourish and I wish that for CommonWealth for sure. Logistics: The beer selection is varied and many. They have amazing food/salad/small bites if youre hungry and one day I saw one of the bartenders serve a homeless guy very compassionately which warmed my heart. Theres a lot of seating to read while you drink or sip coffee. Stop by and be sure to bring your friendly vibe too please!
MoreThe draft beer selection is well chosen and the food is delicious, with vegetarian and vegan options. The staff is excellent - friendly, patient, and knowledgeable.
MoreOne of the best pubs in Oakland. I frequent this place anytime I want to catch a game (several TVs). Great food (get the chicken pot pieand a great draft selection (at least 10 tapswhich almost always includes a few nitros and a cask.
MoreDecent local pub. Has a moderate selection of beverages (including ciders!), but they are notably missing even one Belgian-style brew. The crowd seems a bit younger (and hipster), but not annoyingly so. Its not a "go to" place for me, but not a bad change of pace. Grab a friend and play one of the board games and have a nice walk home.
MoreThis place is very charming and has a very good down-to-earth Pub feel. The beans and toast dish is my favorite, and is very British. The beer selection is good and light on the super bitter IPA that seems to have plagued many a bar. The only problem here is that the food is exceedingly expensive.
MorePretty awesome neighborhood bar thats great for the world cup. The owner Lizzie is amazing and leads a pretty amazing staff. I always feel at home at the Commonwealth pub. Definitely a place Ill continue to visit for as long as it stays this awesome. Thier food menu is awesome and thier rotating beers are perfectly selected.
MoreJust a fun local pub where there is soccer playing on the TVs, there is a full English breakfast, Scotch eggs, Shepards pie, and some other tasty British treats. The food is ordered at the counter and brought to you. The beer selection is really good an for those who dont drink, there is kombucha on tap!!! Service is friendly and efficient.
MoreI love this place. Been stopping in occasionally for the last few years. Good drinks, lovely food, chill people.
MoreReally cozy pub with some tasty English-style pub fair. The only downside was that the door was broken and didnt automatically close when someone left or entered. Its in a weird location, but dont pass it by. Its definitely worth a stop!
MoreGreat selection of ciders and beer. The pub food is executed very well - I tried the Scotch egg, the sausage rolls, and the chicken pot pie, and all of them were really tasty. The atmosphere was surprisingly calm for a place with such excellent fare.
MoreI love this place. Good beer selection, delicious comfort food, and the most delicious house kombucha on tap that Ive ever tasted - with a kombuchamosa option (so good!).If you ever want to catch a game - especially soccer, or play board games with friends, this is the place to be.
MoreGood beer and cider selection and welcoming vibe. There is a happy hour all day promotion for the summer, so catch it before it goes!
MoreThis place is so warm and charming. Its this spectacular bar, with great beer and cider selections. Their food is why I go, its all about the chicken salad sandwich. I know that doesnt sound exciting, but theirs really is the best Ive ever had. It has fresh slices of crisp apple, bacon, a ton of chicken, and this wonderful soft, warm bun. The place is reminiscent of any pub in London, but with Oakland food and drink quality. I also love they have one of my favorite board games Power Grid on the shelf for anyone to play.
MoreBeer selection is solid. Staff are friendly and fun. Food is good especially the chicken salad salad if you want something lighter and healthy. Go for the Shepards pie or chicken pot pie if you want a more traditional pub treat.
MoreIve enjoyed going to Commonwealth to hang out with friends over beer. I understand they have a fun trivia night. Ive tried the food a number of times and its never as good as it sounds. Its still a great, unpretentious neighborhood pub with great service and Im happy its there.Even though Commonwealth isnt huge, Ive always been able to get a table.
