Common House - Social club in Charlottesville, United States
The staff is kind and professional. The space is knowingly comfortable.
I ordered their burger and fries. The burger was burned and had no flavor. The fries were pretty good though.
My wife and I got married at Common House in August of 2022 and we cant say enough great things about Common House! From our initial walkthrough to the day of our wedding, Bailey, Madison, Megan, and the whole team went above and beyond to make our big day amazing. Many of our guests told us it was the coolest venue theyve ever been to and they raved about how delicious the food was.If you are looking for a unique, fun venue for your wedding, check out Common House!
Visited on restaurant week (3 courses $29 per personso that is a consideration. Melon appetizer and tomato appetizer just OK, flank steak and catfish both good. Deserts...well, Ill eat anything sweet. Nice wine, beer and cocktail selection. Good staff. For me, the decor is just odd. The eclectic design is not aging well. The wife, a designer, was not amused. Its a bit weird as the building (circa 1913was the old African American Social Club and has a lot of charm. So, just OK overall, but nice folks and some good dishes.
Nice place with good food and music.
We had our 5-person staff retreat here and it was perfect! Having someone come take our breakfast and lunch orders while we were working was a great convenience!
Great place to work in Charlottesville
Awesome.and comfortable private social club. Am joining soon and look forward to regular visits alone and with clients.
Great place. Lovely ambience, food and drink are amazing, and the staff are all wonderful every time. They often feature great live music as well. I recommend the Doctor’s Dilemma cocktail. Chef’s kiss. 🤌🏻
Everyone working there was super friendly and helpful. My wife and I just married the day before and they comped a slice of cake for us which was amazing. The cake and that they did that. Glad Im a member of such a great place.
Really fantastic spot to eat and meet up with friends. The trivia on Tuesday is great!
Helpful, friendly, responsive staff. Beautiful location and delicious food.
10/12/21 Response to your response:The amount of $4500 was mentioned at the beginning and I was stating that it wasn’t clearly stated to us about all the extra charges. On top of that, adding an additional $1800 a few days before the wedding even though it wasn’t ever on the invoice.Secondly, I’ve tried to call and speak to someone about my review (as requested3 times in the past week and haven’t reached anyone.Next, I never said there weren’t any food covers, I said it was surprising that we had to request that. For the price of the food, it was crazy to us that food covers weren’t automatically given and there were no heaters. So if we wouldn’t have asked, food normally just sits out on a platter in the sun for hours. We ran out of food for the last hour, the only thing we had left was broccoli and squash. You were speaking to the mother of the bride about putting aside a plate for the bride and groom and after we got back from pictures to eat it, a server had thrown them away. And lastly, the guests that checked in at 6:54 did NOT stay downstairs until 7pm. They came up and had a drink on our tab!ORIGINAL REVIEW First and foremost, our wedding at the Common House was absolutely stunning and the spaces they offer are picture perfect. Madison was absolutely wonderful to work with. The reason this review is getting a 3/5 is due to several issues we ran into the day of our wedding. This is just a heads up to brides considering the Common House for their event.1.When we originally found Common House for our reception venue, we were quoted $4500 for 3 hours of rental space, food, and alcohol. It was never mentioned to us that appetizers and desserts were not included in that. After the small details that weren’t included, we spent around $7500 for the 3 hour event. To be completely honest, if the event were to be exactly what we asked for, the money wouldn’t have been an issue.2.3-4 days before the big day, after contracts were already signed and payments were complete, I received a text message from the wedding coordinator saying I still owed another $1800 for the rental fee and they “forgot to add it to the original invoice” but they’ve added it now. After already paying $3000+ over what we were quoted, I was shocked to hear we still owed another $1800 and confused as to why it was just being brought up now. They decided last minute to waive that fee, thankfully.3.Food. This was a big one. When we met with our wedding coordinator, we told her we would have 59 people attending the wedding reception. She said their chef prepares enough food for 1.5 servings per person. Not even an hour into the food, there were 7-9 people (including the bride and groomthat had not eaten, and the food was completely out. It was also incredibly disappointing to pay what we did and run out, have to ask for food covers to keep bugs away, and have no heaters to keep it warm. After about 5 minutes of the food being outside, it was freezing cold.4.Alcohol Issue/Tips The alcohol package we received included rum, tequila, vodka, bourbon, and scotch (it’s even printed on the sign that was placed for guests at the barOne of our guests walked up to the bar and requested a scotch drink and was denied and told that wasn’t available for us. Thankfully my mother stepped in and demanded it. On top of the scotch issue, Common House charged a service fee (tips for the servers of $1097.80and the bartenders still placed a tip jar on the bar which we found extremely tacky.5.Lastly, our event was from 4pm-7pm, and at 6:54pm three guests that were not from our wedding came up and got drinks and hung out. I do understand that at 7pm, the space was now open to the public, but the staff could have been polite enough to let us have the full time and not have strangers with us the last few minutes of our event.Overall, i’m thrilled the pictures were amazing and guests had a great time, but for an almost $8000 3 hour event, it was sub-par service.
Great event space! So happy to have gotten married here
We have been members of CH from the beginning and had many amazing events at this wonderful space. But our daughters wedding was THE BEST! The staff, food, drinks, event space were absolutely THE TOPS! I would highly recommend!!
I really enjoy coming here to work or eat.
We had a great time! Got drinks and stayed for dinner. Cocktails were so delicious. We got the round complimentary which was such a sweet gesture. Can’t wait to be back!
Resturant week $29 selection. Portions VERY small....like appetizers :(
We had a private dinner for 12 of us in the second floor library. CH has a great facility - we had couches and a pool table to occupy us for drinks before and after our seated dinner (particularly helpful as it was raining so we couldnt visit the rooftop bar). The dinner was excellent as was the service. I will definitely use Common House again.
Very friendly and always great service.
The most impressive social club that Charlottesville has to offer.Located directly off the Downtown Mall™ a short stroll along 2nd street, next to the corner bar, Fellinis, Common House immediately strikes you as something grander than Common. The food is amazing, and if I was a super taster, this is where I would be lavishly drowning my brisket and poaching my bagels. But alas, it is what Common House also caters to which pops my slider. In drawing a wide and diverse crowd, one can find small, intimate moments to medium-sized events, to wild, bohemian dance parties on the roof. All among any one of the three fabulously designed levels.Having an event hosted here has been a highlight for me in my career as a professional partier, and for my time in Charlottesville, or anywhere else for that matter. This club understands the value and potency of combining local artists with the deep, connected community that raised them up. From shrill, acoustic ladies, to barn-burning sub bass, the first Common House seems to suggest by every way of its essence, that those who watch over this place have built something that is anything but common.[oa]
Unbeatable rooftop space downtown, with a full service bar, seating, and separate lounging area plus flex open space for dancing or yoga! Inside, luxuriously appointed decor, ideal for working and networking, with meal service as well as another full service bar. This private membership social club is the place to be
Cozy, comfy place to have a drink. Entire staff is charming. Our server Paige took care of our party of six.
The best Social Club experience, just so happens to be in Charlottesville, soon all over the United States hopefully.
Excellent atmosphere. Soho House without the pretension.
We hosted our 20 person wedding at Common House - planned the entire thing in 3 weeks and this team acted as though we had planned it months in advance. So professional and accommodating. Above and beyond full service. Thank you to Shelby who put me, the bride, at ease from the first email interaction. She was proactive and helped cast the vision for what the evening could look like on such a short timeline. Madison and Michael helped execute every detail of the day flawlessly. The food was delicious (fried chicken amazing!!and the space So well designed and unique. Would do my wedding here a hundred times over.
Beautiful place to work, relax, commune, meet up or quietly sit. Great service and food.
Fantastic and unique social and event space on the Downtown Mall. There was really nothing like it beforehand in CVille and Common House continues to impress me every time I go.The staff are so welcoming & kind and really go the extra mile — with setting up dinner on short notice, taking the time to explain a cool cocktail, or hosting afterparties when no one else is open — that I can’t help but tell all my friends that live in CVille about Common House.I’m a supporter for life. Onward and upward, Common House!
Atmosphere, great service, always interesting menu.
My husband and I had a short weekend trip to Charlottesville VA and we stayed at the Townsman hotel. Included in our stay package was an amenity that allowed us to visit the Common House. We thoroughly enjoyed our visit. The staff was extremely friendly and went out of their way to make us feel comfortable and welcomed. Sam the bartender was an amazing mixologist. And his knowledge of the spirits was extremely educational. I highly recommend visiting when you are in Charlottesville. And I am looking forward to checking out some of the new locations that may be closer to us.
By being a guest at the Townsman we were given the privilege of being able to visit The Common House. We were hesitant at first since we had never been and it being a private social club we were uncertain what to expect. So glad we decided to visit. The place had a very relaxed atmosphere and the staff was exceptionally friendly and welcoming. Sam who was tending bar while we were there was very friendly and helpful. He made us an Old Fashioned and it was “The Best” Old Fashioned we have ever tasted. We enjoyed our drink and conversation with Sam about some of the delicious bourbon they had to offer. We loved the whole experience and look forward to visiting again hopefully in the near future. Thanks for an awesome afternoon!!
GREAT New Years Party!
Nice place for group get togethers enjoyed the food and ambiance will Certainly go back.
Very nice! Enjoyed having lunch
The staff at Common House have a gift for assuring that members and guests feel well-cared for.
Wonderful environment, great events. Check their calendar!
Nice Urban atmosphere club type environment.
I didnt try the food because this is a private club. If you do not have a membership you cant go in.Im sure it is great but I just wasnt aware from the posting online.
Thank you for the May 2018 spectacular celebration dinner for my UVA nephews graduation!
Amazing food and awesome space (rooftop terrace is amazing). Great as a co-work and private event space or just to grab a bite to eat!!
Absolutely incredible place to eat, relax, grab a drink, or host an event. Its a wonderful space and club with a lot of options and events every week that give a wide variety of things to do.
I cannot be more pleased with the top notch service, international-level cuisines offered, and the community events’ quality at Common House. I am one proud commoner and I would highly recommend the place to anyone looking for a great coworking space, social club, and great night events for the weekend. :-)
Top-notch service. Great place to meet friends for a drink or host a business meeting.
Great place to work during the day and enjoy cocktails in the evening! I love the relaxed vibe, diverse membership, and the roaring fire on rainy, lazy Saturdays.
Very lovely location in Charlottesville for social events and to meet friends
My favorite place to work in the daytime, and my favorite place to sit with cocktails and play board games in the evening.
Been a member since it opened, love having early coffee and coworking space plus the added benefit of such a diverse crowd of interesting people!
