Two Tunnels, Combe Down, Bath BA2 5JR, Warminster
On a converted railway line, this mile-long cycling & walking tunnel features music & lighting.
Well worth a visit. Unbelievably long. Lit all the way though but still quite dark. Love the musical installation. Really adds to the experience.
Walking these tunnels us fun. Be prepared! Its helpful to take a torch or use your phones. Take a hoodie or light coat even late summer..it was cool. Lastly, MOST others sharing this space are curteous but occasionally a cyclist whizzes past, its dangerous and unwanted!!
I love cycling this tunnel. At 1 mile its brilliant to cruise through at any speed and whilst the lighting is sub-optimal, it just adds to the experience. Certainly an experience you should spend your time to cycle through, along with the entire track, its brilliant.
Hard to rate a tunnel really. Wouldnt recommend bringing small children, its a tunnel with lots of face moving cyclists. Other than that, its a tunnel.
A really interesting place to walk or ride. I walked both the tunnels this one beeing the longest out of the 2.A popular place to visit lots of walkers and cyclists using the tunnels. There is interesting parts to look out for like the exhaust line from the steam engines along the full distance of the tunnel there is random bits of rail stuck up at the side of the tunnel Im not sure but I guess they are mile markers there is also refuge points all the way along wear track workers would have stood to allow trains to pass by Also this tunnel was make threw natral stone wich you can see in alot if places along the tunnel wear as the rest is brick lined.Definitely a place to visit its good for exploring or for exercise walking or running and cyclists. It could be improved by better brighter lighting especially for alot of us who go there to enjoy the tunnels. Also this tunnel approximately halfway through hassome disc things that light up and play instrumentalsounds wich all together makes music. The bad experience I had was some cyclists well actually most didnt have any lights and its not very bright some places are even darker so you risk getting hit by one and some was going really fast clearly with no care about anyone else using the tunnels so if your going for a walk to enjoy the tunnels please keep a eye out for cyclists.Other than that its a really enjoyable place it would have 5 stars if it had better lighting wear you could see the tunnel better.
Lovely place for a walk. Raining today but we stayed mostly dry. Tuckers Mills Viaduct is worth walking on to. Lovely place for an afternoon walk.
Amazing tunnel which acts as a cycle and walking path. Takes a good 30 minutes to walk through but is a nice interesting walk from Midford Station.
Long, hard walls, that are sometimes dripping wet, so bring an umbrella, if you want! It’s nice and cool down there but after a hearty amount of physical exertion, through the tunnel, you’ll be panting. Would recommend to a friend, parent or any family member that is looking for an interesting ride.
Terrifying but excellent!Cycled from Oldfield Park to Tucking Mill, lovely run, but the Tunnels are slightly unnerving first time through!(all very safe though..)
Lovely to walk or cycle, but some cyclists have no lights and cycle far to fast, they seem to not worry that children are about.
Classical music playing in the tunnel - therapeutic!
Im from Dorset originally and I moved to Bath and me and my partner love walking and exploring the past history of Bath
Interesting chsnnel. It has a very long tunnel and you can hear music inside.
Lovely walk, there is no actual car park. Just street parking. Worth it though. Go for bikes, my little man loves it on his.
If youve not walked, run or cycled through the Two Tunnels you should really try a circular out from Bath to the Hope and Anchor, then back along the canal to Bath....
Great cycle track shame the track to get to it from Wellow is so muddy during the winter.
Woowzer, who ever put some thought into this is worth some praise, the tunnel itself has done lighting and then halfway through you get to hear some weird music and as you get closer you get to see where the sound comes from... We loved it.
Awesome!! Loved the music through the tunnel.
It features lighting and has a bit of eerie music to add to the feeling of being in an old rail tunnel. Takes about 30mins to walk or 15mins to cycle. Believe it closes overnight (open 6.00 to 22.00 or soso be mindful of going in too early or too late.
Does what it says on the tin.... However, there is a fair amount of history and signposts that tell you about how the tunnel came to be and for what reason. There is also a hidden surprise along the centre section of music playing through speakers with sound sensitive lights that flash along with the music.
A great experience. Lights are handy to make yourself seen.
I run through these tunnels regularly. They are a truly wonderful addition to the Linear Park walkway but the space isnt without its issues for me. The lighting in the tunnels is very low, and many cyclists (without lights or high visrush through them at high speed. As a pedestrian and in the past dog-walker, the pathway doesnt always feel shared use.The music inside the second tunnel is very eerie, but a cool addition. Id recommend this place to walkers and adventurers in the area.
As a single mother I was a bit apprehensive to take my children to a tunnel. Ive heard that bad things go down tunnels, such as sewage. However this tunnel had none of that. It was fairly well lit, easy to navigate through and we had a great time going through it! It was very clean and had none of the smells I associate with tunnels.Overall it would be six stars if there was more natural light, Id say opening the space up a bit would be a nice addition.
Really beautiful. Particularly nice to run through on a hot day.
Lovely little adventure for my 2 year old who loves tunnels!! Lovely music installation half way through as well. Perfect walk for when it’s raining too!
Unique cycling experience through disused rail tunnels. Links into a great loop ride along the canal back to Bath
A lovely walk to be had here at the Combe Down and Devonshire Tunnels (Two Tunnels). Quite a long walk in the Combe Down Tunnel, but it is very enjoyable and suitable for walkers, joggers and cyclists alike! The path is flat and rather smooth, meaning its also suitable for those in wheelchairs. About 650m in to the tunnel, speakers throughout the middle of the tunnel play cello music making your walk even more enjoyable.Overall, this walk is very much recommended! However, I wish the lights throughout the tunnel were a little brighter.
Amazing. The two tunnels offer a fantastic location to bike, run out simply walk through. They are (as the name suggeststwo of the tunnels one much longer than the other about 1700m and takes about 20 minutes to walk through. It is truly a surreal experience... There is a wonderful calm ambience and for the middle third there is calming music player with glowing speakers. It was quite quiet when we where there but this is a multi user path so always be aware of cyclists and pedestrians neither of which may have lights. (The tunnel is lit but it is only a faint ambient light)Well worth a trip.
Healthy walk or cycle with a nice pub at the end. Children may be slightly alarmed by the spooky music played in the centre third.
They have done a great job in renovating these tunnels, well worth a visit or a run /cycle through. The music that suddenly appears in the tunnel is a strange sensation and adds to the experience
Stunning tunnel. Unique and special experience in Bath - well worth visiting.Great running surface and cool during hot summer days.
Marvelous idea and tunnel. You can go through on foot or on bike. One tunnel is longer and has coloured lights and classical music playing near the middle. Is welcomingly cold in there on a hot day but take a jacket if not a cold day.
Amazing to bike through these tunnels
Wow! This is hard to find unless you know the area, but I am so glad we tracked it down. We walked through both tunnels and back. Great for walking, running and cycling. Fascinating and really different walk.
Brilliant, really enjoyed it, the music made the journey through a lot nicer. Just wish that it was compulsory for cyclists to use front and rear lights in the tunnels as nearly collided with several unlit ones.
Love the tunnels. Its such an asset to Bath life. Great for running through during this very hot weather as they are so cool. Usually well lit (occasionally some lights are out but they usually get fixed quickly). Love cycling through them as well. Just remember they are dual purpose, so cyclists, runners and walkers must be mindful of other users.
Great place for cycling, a really special addition to the network in the area. The tunnels can be accessed from the west side of bath or from Midford in the south. Theres also an option to do a loop taking in the tunnels, taking the back lanes eastwards from Midford and picking up cycle track 24 near the aquaduct. Look out for the huge carp. In the small lake just south of the tunnels.
Absolutely fantastic, visited the area for a cycle on routes 24 and 244 via the two tunnels and the canal side.Absolutely brilliant experience, having cycled all over this is truly unique. It was glorious hot weather this bank holiday weekend, as you approached the longer of the two tunnels you could feel a blast of cool air.Should have remembered my bike lights but had my bell to let walkers and other cyclists know I was there. It is lit but is still dim. That just added to the experience for me. Brilliant
Great unique walk through an old disused railway tunnel. The lighting is just about right and the music and pulsating lights add to the experience. Its pretty cold in there so take a jumper or coat if you feel the cold.
The nicest tunnel I´ve been to. You can enjoy a pleasant walk through it with live music inside!! I´ve ridden it on my bicycle and I have to say that is nicer walking because the music is a whole experience, only Britain is a country where you can find a tunnel in the middle of the countryside with music!! hahaha
Amazing!! Dark,Eerie, especially with the violin music seemingly coming from nowhere! The 2nd tunnel went on and on,as if it would never end! Was great fun.was a great walk.the scenery in-between the tunnels was beautiful and quiet.
Its marvellous. A very good out come for the long closed tunnels. It can feel cold inside so wear warm gear. Please have good lights on your bicycles and if walking wear reflective tabbard or at least carry a bright torch. These precautions are necessary as there are a few marauding cyclists who think its ok to race at pace through the tunnels.
Nice route for cyclists heading south out of Bath. Takes you magically into quiet rural landscape away from the urban-ness before you enter the tunnel.
They do not advertise the fact that this tunnel exists on road signs so it makes it very hard to find it and unless you happen to know about it you are never going to stumble into it. My advice to those in charge would be put some proper signs up letting people know its there
Walked through the Two Tunnels for the first time today. Dont know why its taken me so long. Great experience. The Combe Down tunnel was well lit with an interesting audio thing going on. The Devonshire tunnel was more fun with less lighting and more atmosphere.Looking forward to my next visit when I intend to be less hurried so to be able to read the information boards en route.
Its a good walk. Takes you to Midford . And theres music played along the way.
What an experience! Chamber music was being played through illuminated speakers when I walked through this summer (2017).
The second and longest of the Two Tunnels that form part of the Two Tunnels Greenway. This is the longest cycling and walking tunnel in the UK. It never closes although the lights switch off at 11pm. If traveling through the tunnel during the day you will experience some light and sound artwork called "Passage". Recommended for residents and visitors alike. If you are a visitor and need to rent a bike, there are nextbike stations in Bath city centre or Moorland Road, which is close to the cycle path.
Feel a bit funny writing this, but these are two really cool tunnels. There are lights all the way along (until 11pmand violin music is played by illuminated speakers. We walked through in the evening and it was very atmospheric (maybe a bit creepy if you were alone), partly because its so long. Definitely worth a walk through!
Fantastic for a walk, run or a cycle! Chilling, refreshing! Highly recommended for a not so traditional tour of Bath!
