Welcoming atmosphere. You will encounter street salespeople. You will have to haggle. Prices for goods are more than you would pay in the market but still reasonable by USA standards. Great live music by street performers.

Parque Colon, or Columbus Park, is the central square of the Ciudad Colonial historic district of Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. In its Center stands a statue of Christopher Columbus, in whose honor the square was renamed in 1887. Previously the square was known as Plaza Mayor.Monuments bordering the square include the Catedral de Santa Maria la Menor, Santo Domingos Municipal Palace, and the Palacio Borgella, which once hosted the Dominican Republics Parliament. Calle del Conde, once the thriving commercial heart of Santo Domingo, starts from Parque Colon and runs to the Puerta del Conde. At the beginning of Calle del Conde is a bust of Bartholomew Columbus, Christophers brother and the founder of Santo Domingo.During the colonial period of the 15th century, various buildings were built on the island of Hispaniola, which were the first colonial houses in the entire American Continent. Within these residential constructions the Parque Colón was created, which was called by the name of Plaza Mayor de Santo Domingo, which dates back to 1506, and throughout the years to this day it has undergone various modifications. This was the main entertainment center for the inhabitants of the time, since it gave life and splendor to the town of La Isabela, and its surroundings. The name of Plaza Mayor was given in honor of the Major Commander of the order of Nicolás de Ovando, who arrived in Santo Domingo in 1502. It was named after him even more, since he was in charge of moving the city to the western part of the Ozama River.Previously it was called as Plaza de la Catedral, since a few meters from the square was the Catedral Primada de América. In the center of this park is the statue of Grand Admiral Christopher Columbus pointing north, and it was a creation of the French sculptor E. Gilbert. On February 27, 1887, it was officially inaugurated as Parque Colón, since there was the statue of Columbus.

A must if you visit Santo Domingo to get some of the rich culture of this beautiful country. Wear sneakers and comfortable clothes; and get ready to take a lot of amazing pictures. Ps: you can park on the street or find a paid parking lot, cause you will need to walk around.

Beautiful park at the heart of the colonial area. Good restaurants, vibes, historical monuments, and it is always bustling with activities like dances and Music. Just walk around or sit down in one of the restaurants and gets some drinks. You can also take a Chu Chu Colonial train from here and explore the area if you want. It costs about $10/per person. The audio recording tour is in both English and Spanish and last about 45 minutes ride around the nearby streets in the colonial area. Great way to enjoy the city and learn some history.

Take time to explore some of the other historical sites in the area, have a meal at Tribu, food was excellent. There is a 18% govt tax and 10% service fee throughout Santo Domingo.

Its a beautiful park but, its sad because Christopher Columbus shouldnt be there, he was a criminal, he killed all the locals back then (1492to steal the gold, its a shame for the 🇩🇴 corrupt Dominican government for keeping that criminal there. But anyways the government its just like him, CRIMINALS.

Definitely a place with two sides of beauty. By day very cultural and by night on Sundays the lights and tropical heat release to the sound of live local bands. Must go if your by Santo Domingo and in the mood for the real Dominican experience. Also it’s extremely safe thanks to the tourist police.

The Columbus park is the second main square (parkalong with Plaza de Espana. While the Plaza de Espana is by the Alcazar edifice, Columbus park is by the first Cathedral of the Americas. The park is always busy with street performers and sellers, live music and in the middle of it is a bronze statue of Christopher Columbus. Many bars around to sip a drink and enjoy the atmosphere.

We had an excellent tour guide who showed us around the tourist zone. The city trains citizens on the history and then they are paid by giving people tours ($50 for Victor Galva Montero who I would recommend!). There are about 2000 cops within the zone because they want to keep tourists safe. We enjoyed our walk through the city with stops at museums, jewelry shops, food, and the chocolate factory!

I can not write enough about this amazing, so rich in history place! You will love it! If is simply to just walk around, or sit down and enjoy a beer. So much to see and learn. They have events throughout the week at the plaza, and yes there is a lot of panhandlers, and tour guys that will want your business... It is well worth it! But dont spend over $40. Also they WILL take you to stores to shop around in, be aware that they will charge you double the amount, just because your tour guy gets a cut for bringing you in. But other than that, Zona Colonial is a gorgeous place!!

This is definitely a tourist attraction. Nice scenery, plenty of street entertainment. The only downfall is the panhandlers. They want to be your personal tour guides so you can give them money. Being that its an exclusive tourist location security should regulate panhandlers. They had a lot of food, souvenirs and Happy Hour options. You can rent bikes, try samples of chocolate, lots of things to do.

Beautiful park with local vendors and musicians filling the air with culture and arts. Great historical area. Highly recommend parking and walking to get the full experience as you will not be able to access by vehicle. Great 24 hour restaurant on the corner at the hotel with a fast of Dominican food. The church at the square is the oldest in the Caribbean and has been visited by Pope John Paul II.
