Domkloster 4, 50667 Köln, Germany, Dusseldorf
Landmark Gothic cathedral with a huge facade, plus guided tours & Rhine views.
Ive travelled a lot and seen many churches and cathedrals, but this one was really fascinating.I didnt visit the whole place entirely because I wanted to come back and see it again and enjoy it twice. The joy became doubled when I entered to the cathedral and inside was also perfect.
Located in the heart of cologne, right next to the train station. This cathedral is so magical and the view is breathtaking. Would suggest early hours to avoid the crowd. Also there are some relaxing places outside the cathedral. Beautiful at night with lights on. This is also under one of the UNESCO world heritage sites.
Well worth a visit - the gold chest behind the altar contains the bones of the three magi! The 540 stair hike up to the tower is rewarded with closeups of the exquisite stonework and magnificent views of the city.
A magnificent building! Whoever visits it once will remember it for the rest of his life! You need to be strong for 533 steps, but the view is incredible 😊
Beautiful, stunning and majestic cathedral. Definitely the highlight of Cologne’s monuments. The entrance is free although you need to pay about €4 if you want to walk up the tower for a view. Be careful as there’s more than 500 steps to the top! Also be prepared to walk through the cathedral at snails pace due to the massive number of visitors.
Really the only worthwhile thing to do in cologne. The cathedral is visited by over 20000 people daily. There is a reason for that , its jaw dropping, Huge, is an understatement , the pillars are the largest you will see . Its the largest twin spired religious building in the world. The stain glass is jaw dropping , wherever you look there is something to see. Something yo blow your mind, and its free to enter .
Beautiful cathedral, free entree to roam outside and inside, quiet and cool inside which adds to the awe, much nicer having no street vendors coming up to sell you stuff like at the Eiffel tower. Loads of great shops and restaurants nearby.
Truly a magnificent piece of architecture. The humongous size does tend to blow your mind away!Theres no entrance fee, hence pretty crowded but could still grab few nice pictures. Definitely a must visit for Köln
Cologne Cathedral is one of Hot Spots in Cologne, you have to visit it. Colognes view from above is awesome, you have only go upstairs (553 steps). You can also enjoy the interesting phenomenon that takes place in the square in front of the cathedral, the wind blowing (wait for it), and of course you will find also a nice gothic architecture inside of the cathedral, with beautiful stained glass windows and the remains of The three kings.
The history of this cathedral is amazing, especially that it survived WW2 basically undamaged! The design is about as Gothic as possible, and appropriately grand on the inside yet not overdone. Somber might be a good description. There is not much explanation inside, so go with a guide or some web pages to really appreciate it.We went on a Saturday afternoon in August and there was no wait to enter.
Wow! The main Cathedral is free to enter, flat to walk around and very impressive. If you are fit, walk around outside and pay to climb 500+ steps up the tower to a large caged in viewing area. Tight and claustrophobic round staircase but my whole family managed. Highly recommended.
Just the best thing youre going to see in this part of Germany. Fantastic Fantastic FantasticWhen you exit for the first time from the Banhof it caughts your attention and then dominates the city for all time you stay there.Visible in every single point of KölnWith sunset takes your breath away, in the night with all the lights is pure elegance
This is a beautiful church. Take your time looking at everything. There is no cost to visit, I do suggest giving a donation. It takes a long time to renovate this church because of all the years of grime on the outside of the church.
Revisited this wonderful building in August 2022. Fabulous and breathtaking (literally, when you climb the 533 steps to the top of the tower, but so worth it for the views). A small charge to climb the tower but the cathedral is free
Fabulous place! A must see in North Germany area. The interior has so many stained glass windows, its amazing. I still need to read my little history folder to get all the details. My wife and I loved it.
Majestic, grand and all those similar adjectives. This is the main attraction in cologne and is worth it. The space around the cathedral is also relaxing. The insides of the cathedral is breathtaking. Also you can climb the tower which is also, literally, breathtaking, since there are 500 odd steps to climb. Visit as early as possible to avoid crowd. It is specially beautiful at night with all the lights, it looks surreal.
Awe inspiring Cathedral - really unique in its history and architecture. Really amazing to think that this was designed and built with so few of the tools we take for granted today. The fact that it was completed over a period of 600+ years is clear indication that it was built for a worthy purpose - to gather Christians to celebrate their faith and the sacraments given to us by Jesus,
Very large and awe inspiring structure. There are many legends associated with this place. Has been a central attraction in Köln for many centuries. There are many in the area who are trying to save your soul, many openly preaching.
One of the most spectacular buildings Ive ever seen. Im not religious but it still leaves me in awe. Ive been during the summer and at Christmas time. Its incredible and a must see.
One of the iconic beauty I ever witnessed. It’s so beautiful and stunning. You can go inside for free. To go top of cathedral you need a buy a ticket. It’s very old cathedral so there is always some kind of Renovation going on. Just at Köln hbf, easy to access. Must visit place in cologne. (Sometimes too crowded with tourists)
Amazing spot to see. I highly recommend paying to walk up the tower (I think €7), but be prepared for a hike! Theres even a sign at the bottom that says, "No lift, no joke."But so worth it for the incredible views: the city itself in every direction, and up close details of the cathedral exterior. Stop at several lookout points to rest, such as the bell, before continuing on. Bring water and comfortable shoes! And then inside the cathedral when youre back at ground level, bask in the history and splendour of the place. Youll feel awed and tiny amongst all the religious art and artifacts. Be respectful if theres an ongoing service, but otherwise, admission is free.
It’s a majestic church with super tall ceilings and so much details. There was a service at the time when I visited so I did not get a chance to go closer to the alter. But the columns, the stained glass windows and the sculptures of saints and prophets had already taken my breath away. I also did not get a chance to climb the tower. It was almost a quarter to 5pm. The outside plaza was crowded with some street artists playing. I will definitely come back and will make sure to come early so that I will have enough time to have a bird’s eye view from the top of the tower.
An awesome cathedral to visit if you are in Köln. you are able to walk up to the very top, for a family of 4 was 12€. Be aware though, there are just over 500 steps to the top and no lifts so you do need to be a bit fit! Once at the top the views are incredible. If you dont feel like climbing 500 steps, you will love the inside of the cathedral, its stained glass windows and high ceilings captivate everyone.
The architecture on this building is breathtaking and for days every time I looked at it, the feeling it gave was beautiful. We did not have it on our itinerary to visit the first day but really glad we did as when we entered the organ music was playing. Wow, so intense and lovely. Ive never experienced that before and absolutely loved it. It stopped a few minutes later and never came back on, so timing was just perfect to be able to hear it!The inside of the cathedral is just as beautiful as the outside. In all, this has been one of my favorite cathedral visits to date.
The size and scale of this Cathedral has to be seen to be believed, it’s huge.As with many buildings like this there is restoration work going on so there is scaffolding on some elevations while the work is carried out but don’t let that put you off. It’s dead easy to get to literally right beside the main train station and a 2 minute walk to the entrance. Entry is free and as usual you are encouraged to make a donation towards the restoration cost. Inside is vast and you don’t have to be religious to appreciate the architecture and skill that went into constructing it, well worth a visit .
Pros: Impressive cathedral. Good crypt walk. Interesting stained glass. Tour climb worthwhile.Cons: Brickwork really needs cleaning (some bits were shiny white, most was tainted black). Didnt feel the sense of awe that I do in most cathedrals. Chickenwire all round the tower summit made the views a little difficult.
Huge cathedral, beautiful from the inside as well as the outside. Really tall, 157m which you can reach if you go upstairs to the top of the cathedral. I really recommend climbing all those steps because you can see the whole city from up there.
Lovely cathedral. It’s quite big. I loved the stained glass windows they were very beautiful. It’s a lovely place to visit if you are in cologne, has a lot of history in it. It was very beautiful and the details are amazing! Would definitely recommend you go see it. The only reason I’m giving 4 stars is that there was scaffolding on the cathedral when I went (I guess they were doing repairs or something )
The cathedral looks lovely. Just a few steps away from Hauptbahnhof. The exteriors and interiors are beautiful with intricate designs, sculptures and mosaic works. Totally worth the visit.
Just amazing. You see it in the distance and you can immediately perceive its magnificence. This just increase as long as you get closer.Really one of the most beautiful churches/cathedral I ever saw.
This place is very crowded. The cathedral is majestic. The interiors are worth visiting, houses a crypt as well. The tower climb is not too arduous, but you do have to climb 533 steps. There is a combo-ticket available for treasury and tower climb, would recommend it.Disliked that there were no visual cues inside on what you are looking at and no pamphlet guide in English.
Magnificent cathedral, the jewel of the city. Imposing and with awesome architecture. Beautiful parks with nice people. Every corner is an artistic surprise! Definitely worth a visit! Do not forget to go to the chocolate museum and the bridge to lock your love!
Huge cathedral in cologneIt was the first time in this city and really enjoyed walking around and seeing so many interesting places and of course this cathedral I couldn’t had it in one flame and also couldn’t had it without the crowd. But we could enjoyed the views from far away. Hope everyone enjoyed visiting this cathedral and this city as wellHave a wonderful trip and a good time with your company❤️
I highly recommend taking some time to visit "The Dom!" The architecture and craftsmanship that went into that structure are astounding. If youre up for it, climb The Dom and then let your legs rest inside as you take in all the beauty within. Buy the guidebook in the gift shop so you can read more about the artwork and specific features as youre taking it all in. Its a beautiful piece of history to behold.
Thats amazing! A visual masterpiece. Architecturally fascinating. A historical masterpiece with the works inside. If you have a chance to go Cologne, you must see Dom Church.
Very beautiful architectural old construction the biggest in Europe still with ongoing renovations that has never been done. The church is one of the biggest attractions of the Köln city. It’s always full of tourists or visitors but not well organised, especially on ceremonies and events you have to be a member otherwise you can’t get in.
One of the largest and most beautiful cathedrals I have ever seen.It has a museum next to the Temple to see some exhibits about the history of the temple. To enter this space you must pay a ticket. To see the rest of the cathedral is free.
What a gorgeous place. The entry is free, and to climb the tower is 6eur. I was scared about the 533 steps so only my husband climbed up to the top. Today they have Ester mass till 1:50 pm, which means you can go in To have a look but can not visit further.
The biggest cathedral of Germany is nothing short of breathtaker. Its Gothic architecture makes it even more splendid. Theres always a crowd infront though at night its pretty much empty. A must see if you visit Köln!!
It is definitely a must see place. The entrance is free, there is a museum which has about 6€ for an adult, if i am not mistaken.
It is very magical and very near to the train station (hbfso you can see it directly when you exit the station. You can also keep walking around the town and street in front of the cathedral and you can find beautiful places to eat or to drink🍹.
Amazing architectural gem is the cathedral of Cologne Germany. It took 500 years to build and it is not difficult to understand why. Gothic and ornate and intricate, the many crenellations, pillars and statues keep your eyes roving from spot to spot. Inside, there are incredible mosaics, tombs and more carvings and statues. The skeletons of the 3 Kings are relics housed in a gold sarcophagus or arc type structure. Do not miss this incredible building when you visit Cologne.
Impressive view. Best place to visit while in Cologne. The inside has tall, well decorated ceilings. The windows hold a lot of history with their painting. The pews and altar are worth the view of a lifetime. It has its original painting on the outside with thick and solid pillars towering the floors. I will sum the view with one word, breathtaking.
Beautiful, majestic architecture and one of the must see places in Cologne. I highly recommend every tourist to also enter the cathedral as it will not cost you anything.
One of the most mesmerizing pieces of architecture I’v seen in my life. The details, the size, the view, the history and the beauty are all immaculate.I came to cologne on a business trip and on my last day I decided to explore the city and it was the best decision ever and later I read about the cathedral and its history. You can go to the other side of the river to take some nice photos as well. Also note that if you want to get inside the cathedral you’ll have to go between 10:00 and 17:00 on weekdays. The love bridge is also near by which will give you a nice view of the cathedral and the river.
Beautiful gothic architecture, it took several hundred years to build.Inside the cathedral there are art pieces everywhere, I liked the mosaics and the architecture itself. There is no entry fee, you just have to be respectful of the fact it is a church. Enjoy it!
This was our second visit to the Cologne Cathedral and our first time attending mass there. It is such a beautiful, awe-inspiring place. I loved hearing the organ music and the stain glass work is just beautiful. This time we also climbed the tower. Yikes! That was a lot of steps!! But it was worth it!
Its a must to visit. Very beautiful from outside and even inside. Its a huge huge structure.. each & every inch of this has been created artistically. You can climb & watch the city.
An absolute marvel of architecture and design. This place emits power, confidence and still makes one feel calm. As the largest twin spire cathedral in the world, highly recommend a visit once in your life.
Its hard to find words to describe this utmost majestic, stunning and fabulous cathedral. The union of human effort and divine grace! Cooperation of nature, time and human talents! Marvelous!
