Trendy, industrial-chic basement space serving upscale Vietnamese fusion plates and set menus.
Loved it. Went for lunch during the week so it was fairly quiet. Everything was great
Love discovering hidden bars and restaurants in Melbourne CBD. This one can accommodate all types of diners, large small groups, large and small eats, large and small drinkers😊
Had a great night here, couldn’t fault anything. Food was delicious, great vibe and the service was next level! Big thanks to John for the food recommendations. We will be back.
Stopped in before our show and I’ve got to say, what delicious food and atmosphere. Had the scotch fillet (new on the menu), pork belly, and some other beautiful dishes. Everything was perfection and will definitely be going back.
Impeccable service, beautiful food. Consistently over the years. The team go above and beyond - always. It’s a no - brainer: Coda is my fav go-to in Melbourne.
Atmosphere is nice. Food is pricey to the quality u get. Not fresh and tasty as my expectation. Im so disappointed about the quality of food. 3 star is for the atmosphere.
Good, but not great. Definitely not comparable to the one Michelin star restaurants were used to in Europe. Had to wait very long for the waitress, who was eating and laughing in the kitchen. Acoustics were not that great, hard to hear ourselves speak. Aubergine dishes were very tasty, but as a whole we wouldnt pay this kind of money for dinner here again.
Coda is always a good idea. Every visit is always memorable. All food ive tasted is full of flavour. One of the best Asian places Ive tried in Melbourne. You get more than you pay for.Their grilled pork is a standout. First bite reminded me of our beach getaways back from home🇵🇭
Most of the food we ordered was good. Our favourite is the lamb and the less recommended is the lemongrass pork. We had a very friendly and professional waitress at the beginning. She was energetic and gave us good recommendations. However, at the end of the diner, a waiter with moustache came to our table. He was obviously unwilling to serve us. He had an arrogant attitude. When we asked for the bill, he just put the EFTPOS machine in front of our face without even looking at us or asking how was everything. We didnt understand why he behaved like this. We didnt even trouble him for a thing during our diner, as most of the time, it was the lovely lady who took care of our table.
One of the best dining experiences Ive ever had!The flavours were so unique and creative, a breath of fresh air amongst the other asian restaurants in the area. I would definitely recommend the Tempura Bugs and Hot and Numbing Lamb, two of best dishes I think Ive ever eaten. The cocktails and wine list was also exceptional, with asian inspired drinks as well. The service from the waiters was absolutely the icing on the cake. They were incredibly relaxed (in the best way possible), but still so proficient and attentive. We were celebrating my mums birthday and she mentioned how full she was getting, and I said "thats what birthdays are for" while the waiter was within earshot, hoping he would pick up on the hint. Within a few minutes, he was back at our table and very sutbly confirmed whose birthday it was, then brought our dessert out with a candle in it for my mum! Absolutely remarkable service, with waiters going above and beyond to ensure we had a good time. Also, no matter who served us, and regardless of whether it was food or drinks, they knew exactly who ordered what and didnt need to ask. It was subtle, but something I dont often see these days and was a testament to how well everyone has been trained.Overall, and amazing experience and I know for sure Ill be back!
Lovely meal tonight and excellent service too. My wife and I enjoyed dinner. Very tasty food with Asian flavours. Would definitely return.
We left the selection of meals to an amazingly well informed waiter. Each dish had very specific tastes and was sensational. The food was great value and the wine selection whilst incredibly complementary were pretty damn pricey
Always a favourite, we came to Coda for lunch and our old favourites were still very much consistently great - the Moreton bay bugs, the beautiful steak tartare. Delicious. We did however noticed there had been some changes to the menu recently. My old favourites, spanner crab and other seafoods on betel leaf with grapefruit had been removed from the menu, which made us a bit sad as theyre simply delightful and had been a longstanding Coda classic. Please bring them back when you update the menu again, they are such a beautiful appetizer. The scallops, which are also different to the previous version I have to say are definitely not as good or enjoyable. The previous version was rich, had the caviar sprinkled on top and was just a gorgeous dish. The new addition of the fried rice with lap cheong was also really tasty, although as an Asian person myself I was shocked at the abundance of lap cheong in the dish haha. Mums fried rice really only had about 10 pieces scattered in here and there since it is very salty. So it was hilarious to see so much of it in a dish, but hey, it was tasty!
I cannot stress this enough, dont go here. Youd get better oysters from a service station trash bin. Also I notice quite a few other reviews with the same comment but it warrants saying again: putting lots of fresh ginger onto every single dish does not make it gourmet! The only reason I gave two stars is for the wine, which was perfect in every sense. The food, the staff, the atmosphere, all get no stars. It would be better if this place was a wine bar with a basic menu cause the food is awful
Service is lovely, drinks were yummy, and food was… either overpowering or under seasoned. At the end of our dinner we were just, left a little lacking. A bit disappointing as I had heard such good things.
The staff were extremely warm, friendly, informative and welcoming. The food was exceptional giving tastebud explosions. Our waiter even ticked off on the menu what food I could eat as gluten free. Definitely will return to enjoy the experience again.
Housed off Oliver Lane you’ll find Coda, another venture by Chef Adam D’Sylva, the same guy behind Tonka. Coda offers up Euro-Vietnamese dishes that are intended to be shared. The menu is wide, the drinks list is extensive (and delicious I might add). The venue itself is dimly lit, has gorgeous ceilings, and music pumping through. The star of the show was by far the Kingfish sashimi. The flavours incorporated were sour, spicy, tangy, savoury - we couldn’t get enough of it. And the cuts of fish were a great thickness and size, making for substantial bites. The prawn betel leaves were good, slightly aromatic and made salty with the accompanying soy sauce. Oysters were sour but savoury, tasty albeit being on the smaller side. The tempura bugs were a good size, a lovely light batter, a good amount of juicy meat. However adding both the soy and the chilli salt became too salty so only a small amount is needed of each. The mozzarella was nothing special, again the pesto was on the salty side, but the carrots were beautifully sweet. The pork cutlet was a decent portion for the two of us, the cuts were nice and thick and meat was super tender and not too fatty. The flavour of the pork itself though was underwhelming - the only prominent flavour was the charred crust. The tomatoes had soaked up most of the flavour which, when eaten with the pork in one bite, elevated it. Flavours weren’t mind-blowing, but at least they were there. The fries were good, nicely salted, we would’ve preferred if they were fried for a little longer as some were softer than others and needed a better crunch.Dining on a Saturday night you can expect it to be busy, but we found that the service was quite slow, we noticed the tables around us being made to wait a while, prompting for some diners to raise the issue to staff. Perhaps there was a staffing issue on this night as they appeared to be under the pump. There has to be a degree of mercy given to the hospo industry at the moment.Overall, a great fine-dining restaurant. The sashimi is what blew us out of the park, everything else was tasty and fresh but not incredible. I’m not sure how I feel about putting European and Asian food together on one menu though. Still worth a visit.
Has gone down hill in the last 5 years. Rude staff! The bland flavour behind the main base ingredient, covered in over powering and over salted seasoning / sauce leaving a bad after taste and in need of a constant refill of water! Had had good experiences before, but with staff that obviously think they are above their hospitality roles at Coda and over salted dog food, I cant say I will ever be going back! Pity we lost so many good restaurants during covid, when this one Im surprised was able to survive! I suppose poor quality ingredients covered in salt saves them some $$$
Hugely underwhelming. The food was over salted and over spiced which obscured any natural flavours and the wine list has a very poor range of options at a reasonable price. There’s far too many other quality restaurants in Melbourne to recommend Coda or go back.
Had a fantastic meal at Coda last night. We were lucky that we were able to sit at the bar as the restaurant was understandably fully booked. The staff were excellent and enhanced the overall dining experience. Quality food, interesting and delicious paired with some perfectly selected wine. Thanks to Jack and Bec in particular. We’ll be back.
We had a lovely dinner at Coda over the long weekend, service was great and food came out pretty quickly. We really enjoyed the salmon gravlax, duck liver puff and our fave dish, the hot numbing lamb with a side of roti. We ordered the fromage blanc sorbet for dessert and it was light and refreshing, great way to end the meal. For mains, we ordered the pork cutlet and the prawn fried rice, the pork cutlet was cooked really well, tender and juicy but it was quite salty for us and the cut we were served was too fatty in our opinion. The prawn fried rice was tasty but nothing special.Overall, it was a great meal and would definitely come again to try the other mains and desserts!
We had a lovely experience and I would give Coda 5 stars, but... my steak tartare was overpowered by acidity and saltiness and that was a big disappointment. We also wasnt impressed with the bug, but all other dishes were great. The duck liver parfait was a BOMB.Will we be back? Absolutely, and this is probably the only judgement that matters.
The manager who served us on the 7th June, made our entire experience a let down. Above and beyond wasnt what I was expecting, but just simple hospitality and a welcoming experience. It was difficult to get someones attention whenever we needed something, and when he saw us trying to get his attention, he didnt even acknowledge politely. Every interaction with him made me question if something I did wasnt right until I confirmed with my friends that he simply didnt care. Food was alright but not sure it I would go back there again. Poor service, unfortunately.
Had a beautiful meal. Well fitted out restaurant that is classic Melbourne.Only issue we had was with one rude waiter. Just don’t ask if u can have a meal without garlic. He wasn’t impressed. Importantly though the manager managed to turn that negative into a positive. Very capable and warm person. I’d highly recommend this restaurant.
A few great dishes. I wasnt very impressed with the fried rice (way too salty - they could use more spices other than salt). Disappointed that they cant do such a simple dish. Maybe they need to watch Uncle Roger. Lightning is definitely an issue for the elderly. Too dark to even read the menu.
My 2 colleagues and I went to Coda for dinner after work a couple of nights ago. It was busy for a Tuesday, and we didnt have a table reserved, but the host said we can sit at a bar table and eat, so he seated us there. The bartender brought us two different menus and said here is the drinks menu and asked if we are having cocktails. I said we might but we are also here for dinner. I asked if the second larger menu he brought has food. He then said in the rudest and most condescending way in a very loud voice that it isnt a food menu because in a proper restaurant you get the drinks menu before the food menu. Reading what he said here really doesnt do justice to the vitriole behind what he said. I asked him the way I did because being seated in the bar area we could have been there only for drinks, and I was trying to let him know that we were eating as well. We were all pretty shocked by how rude he was and how he simply could have said it was another drinks menu and that hed bring us a food menu. Simple. He did bring a food menu. We looked at it for a minute and decided that we couldnt eat in a place that treats people that way, so we got up and left. The food could be great, but Ill never know because Ill never go back.
Nice food and restaurant. But no picture on the menu plate ..
The restaurant is fitted out nicely. Staff are friendly and attentive. The food is excellent, with the only criticism being the tempura bay bug had a very fishy aftertaste. Overall would recommend and would return in the future.
First visit to Coda. Thoroughly enjoyed an absolutely delicious, fun birthday dinner. Top notch food quality and unique flavours - the seafood dishes and Nashi pear pavlova were winners ! 😋 Although we would have preferred a table we still enjoyed our dinner at the bar. Thank you to bartender Phillipe for the birthday cocktail ! 🍹😊
Its been awhile since our visit to Coda and had a fabulous birthday lunch here. The seafood dishes were delicious and refreshing, the pork skewers was large enough to share, in comparison, the lamb cutlet was a bit small for $12. Got a candle on the dessert as well for my birthday.
Dishes were good/so-so. Mostly uninspiring and didnt justify the prices and the reputation of the earnt "Hat award". E.g Oysters $7ea were the smallest Ive ever seen (bigger in photoswhile the Tempura bug dish tasted like they simply use rice flour as batter with no seasonings or flavour at all. Very one toned.Service felt rushed when taking orders and placing food on the table (sometimes a one second drop lolWe agree with other reviewers- we noticed one of the waitors were very judgemental and displayed more enthusiasm, acknowledgement and friendliness towards customers dressed in smart/formal than casual. Their judgement reflects the style of serving they provide. Sad to see really.I did enjoy a few dishes but I wont remember them.
Great curry I ever had.Great view.Great service.Very interesting menu, u can see all those ingredians from asian country.Pipi will be much nicer if use fresh though.
Tried the set menu, excellent starters. Loved them all, main course was better than average. Was bit disappointed with desserts. Still a good place, worth going and try the food.
We came here for a celebration. This cozy restaurant is really located at the Flinders lane. The ambience and services were great. Every dish was delicious and well composed. As we were sitting near the open kitchen, we could see the effort they put into every detail. The price is on the expensive end for sure but worth the try for the food and experience.I would come back for their salmon gravlax, Hervey Bay Scallop, Javanese curry and Dark chocolate sphere :)
We came across this restaurant by seeing many people outdoor dinning. I really love the dishes here. They are super tasty. The service here is nice as well. I definitely will come here again.
3 of us ordered 4 dishes, 2 were starter, without any drinks, we paid $46 each, and we were not full at all. The portion was too small for that price.
Food are well cook and test great also looks good. Service is nice. Scallops always my favorite, and mozzarella is my new favorite dishes!
Great atmosphere, amazing food, friendly staff. It was interesting Asian fusion- South-east Asian with a bit of French touch & slight South Korean spice.Giving 4 stars since the female staff over the phone wasn’t helpful & not understanding their menu nor passionate about their food when being asked a couple of questions.
The food was delicious, fresh and surprisingly filling given the portions looked small. Each dish was packed with flavour. We had friendly service and staff were helpful in making it a great celebratory dinner experience.
As always a wonderful experience. The seafood specially oyesters, prawns, scallops and crab were amazing. The zucchini fritters with feta cheese and peas are to die for. Olivers twist is a must try cocktail and the new pear dessert - yum yum yum. The only item not to my taste was the chicken from the mains, a bit sweet - i wish i was told that at the time of placing d order. Nonetheless, the staff is awesome - a must go to place for an overall amazing experience and food.
[4.5 Stars]Wonderful dining experience. Loved the warehouse-chic ambiance. The counter seating has a great view of all the action in the kitchen and is perfect for single diners or couples.Food was delicious and creative and tasty. Modern twists of some very classic dishes. Absolutely loved the Pineapple Prawn Fried Rice, the tempura balmain bug, Uhm- ma’s chicken, and the yellow duck curry. The only disappointment was the Ice Cream Sandwich- looked amazing but the ice cream was rock solid and the crispy top was tasteless.Service was fantastic! The staff really know their stuff and made great suggestions with the food choices.Great wine list too.Wonderful night out with friends; Highly recommend visiting Coda.
HYPE NOT MATCHED BY REALITYCoda had been on my must do list for some time and I finally got the opportunity to dine there one recent Friday evening.I had high expectations as it has a good reputation for innovative contemporary Asian cuisine. We had an early seating booking ( 6 pm - 8 pm and arrived promptly at 6 pm. We were seated at a comfortable table just inside the entrance, which was not crowded in or too noisy. The wait staff were very order-focused and didnt really make us feel welcomed as customers. It was a very transactive.. what do you want to order.. and off they went. We felt a bit "rushed" from the start. We elected to have sparkling waterwhich was regularly topped up and wine by the glass. The menu is divided into small medium and larger choices. Despite this the small choices dont necessarily come out first so dont think of it as starters, entree , main! The food was a bit disappointing quality and presentation-wise and was fairly unceremoniously delivered to the table. At about 7.45 we were still finishing the dishes when the waiter asked if we wanted to order dessert as the table needed to be vacated for the next session. This was a bit irritating as the restaurant has determined the timing of our dishes.. so we felt that it was hardly our fault that we had only 15 minutes to order and eat dessert.Anyway, two of the four in our party ordered dessert, which came out very promptly.Overall, not a good experience and doesnt leave me hankering for a return visit.
New age Vietnamese fusion food. Great atmosphere for small to big group dining. Love the Curry duck which is so favourful one can simply lick the sauce on the plate.
This place is such a treat for a special occasion, it is exactly what Asian fusion should be. Each dish is prepared with ingenuity and care, so interesting that it’s hard not to pick everything off the menu! So many to choose fr but the clear star dish was the barramundi which was a flavour explosion!
The foods were simply amazing and delicious. I was expecting the foods to be similar to other fusion restaurant but they somehow had their own style and it was great.Their desserts were very tasty too. Its worth coming for the desserts only.If you like Asian fusion foods, you should definitely try this place. You can thank me later.
Coda does a great job of mixing traditional asian flavours with modern ingredients for a very contemporary palate. The food is exceptional and the wine list is very good.It may seem a shame to have ordered fries (but we didwith this delicious food - but I have to say they went very well with the rest of the dishes! The salads were fresh and really well balanced flavours. The desert was amazing. The staff here are exceptional - the women behind the bar (we were seated at the bar!was amazing, attentive, helpful, engaging, friendly and just gave us a great dining experience.Cocktails list is extensive and has something for everyone. It is a little pricy - but you get a great culinary experience.
Amazing Asian style food with great service to match. Theres bar/walk in seating available if you dont have a booking. I would highly recommend the scallops and steak tartare.
I must say that everything is well-thought out, well-composed, and well-cooked. The techniques being used and the chefs understanding of the ingredients is top notch. Fusion is always a hit or miss, and this place falls somewhere in between. Youll appreciate that theyre trying things and you can see it in the dishes that they really put a lot of effort in it. Actually, you can literally see it in their open kitchen. Ask for recommendations on what goes with the dishes. Like the eggplant side dish goes well with rice (we werent informed), and the steak could go well with some starch or salad. But yes, definitely give this place a try. The price is worth it.
Great service. Good atmosphere and delicious food. We had a variety of the big and medium plates to share. The highlight dishes for me was the chicken, duck and the bombe alaska dessert. Delicious strong rich flavours. They also have a good range of cocktails. Will go back again.
Chefs background ensures unusual yet outstanding combination of flavors! Try as many "smaller" seafood dishes as u can. Blackened quail and pork hock are fantastic, and curry duck confit was inspired!! Oh and leave room for the peanut parfait!!! (plus they really take care of single diners at the bar)
