Coach and Horses - Pub in Nanaimo, Canada
Staff was great, had a good selection of drinks. The menu looked pretty decent, but we stuck to just appetizers this trip, typical pub style food was ok. Was a little disappointed there wasnt more selection of local craft beer, but found something I enjoyed.
One of the best spots in Nanaimo for great beer, vegan/ veg/ nonveg food options, and awesome live music. The weekly food specials are ALWAYS good- especially the vegan burger Friday options and the vegan ceaser salad. Also a great summer patio for big groups & doggos. You may have to wait a few minutes extra on busy days- but it’s well worth it for the vibe, great staff, and good food.
Great atmosphere and friendly staff. A lot of vegan options. My first time trying salmon Wellington and I was not disappointed!
What a gem for Nanaimo. Great pints, vegan options along with high quality pub fare. Staff is great too. A perfect mix of tradition and and the modern.
Good sized appies and cool atmosphere. Service was excellent
Although they have a "vegan poutine" the Cost vs. Value doesnt add up. $15 for a handful of fries, in gravy soup.
Im picky. I can be overly specific. Im no Karen but I gotta say... Best wings, best fries, overkill Cesar salad, good music, staff the seemed like they wanted to be there.Amazing guys... Just amazing.
The patio atmosphere is great! The chicken wrap was lovely :only giving 3 stars due to a menu issue - they have a mocktail with the same name as a cocktail, and at 9 months pregnant I unfortunately was served the cocktail. Thankfully noticed after a big sip, but the menus might need some updating to avoid mix ups in the future - or for the servers to check and see which one is being ordered. I only looked at the mocktail side of the menu so had no clue it was the same exact name as a cocktail! Not the waitress’s fault, she was lovely - but a menu update would help :)
Nice place, great food (a bit too much thoand nice music. It just took a very long time to get the food as their chef had to leave earlier but at least they could make the food we wanted , otherwise we would leave because we went specifically for the salmon pie , made a reservation and they didnt told us at that time that it wouldnt be available. So it was nice they still could make it and it was very tasty.
Great little pub. Super friendly patrons and staff! Our server, (apparently somewhat newwent above and beyond to be overly accommodating as we sat there killing time until our ferry so thank you for that and the Fish burger was great👍
Stumbled across this place after two other pubs didn’t allow dogs, and it felt like it was meant to be. As others have pointed out, patio is dog friendly. I mean VERY dog friendly - after asking if our dog could have a treat, the staff brought her a frozen saucer of salt- and seasoning-free beef and broth. Basically an epic dog popsicle. Probably ranked up there as one of the greatest days of my labrador’s life. Tables are sufficiently spaced that you can have a bunch of dog and non-dog groups hanging out without feeling cramped. Food was fresh & non-greasy with lots of meat, veg & vegan options, and service was above average. A happy place for humans and doggos. I would go back to Nanaimo just for this spot.
Great food, wonderful service, our server was super personable and helped our group have a fun time. Downside was the hot weather made it really warm indoors. We kept our menus at the table use as fans!!
Our meal was excellent. Big portions.Dog friendly patio. Chef brought us frozen treat for our fur baby. He was treated well. Reasonably priced. Good selectionsBut. Maybe the wrong time of year. We got swarmed by Wasps. Just took away from the experience!
Coach burger was really good and the garden salad that came with it had a fantastic dressing. Our server Bailey was very nice and friendly and super efficient
Food was fantastic and great value for the dollar.Staff very welcoming. Super pet friendly.....and our dog Chester said he loved the meat & broth popsicle and bucket of ice water. Only passing through Nanaimo but would go out of our way to visit the Coach and Horses again.
Great wings, good ambiance. Loved the live music, but any drink we asked for on the menu, our server said it was super outdated, and no longer offered, such has any of the shots, as well as the merridale cider... Might be time to update the menu perhaps.
AMAZING vegan options, terrific staff, fair prices, cozy atmosphere. Will be coming back again and again.
Awesome place. Great wings. Fantastic food. Drinks are killer.
Great food, good atmosphere, lots of vegan options if that fills your float.Went on St. Patrick’s day for wings and I’m not sure why the manager would ONLY schedule 2 servers and NO bartender? to work a full restaurant on a day like that with a 45 min wait for tables.I felt so bad for our server running around in and out to the patio and making her own drinks for her tablesOur service was good and food was good and hot despite this but the poor girl was exhausted and obviously frazzled by the workload, and customers were obviously getting annoyed with the delays in drinks and service
Amazing beer selection, local microbrew and European beers. Food always great! Great warm cozy atmosphere. Their new wings night on Wednesdays is just sublime, peanut Thai and ginger wings, just great, many other flavors. As well their burgers and sausages are local from ladysmith and their breads are from Victoria.
First time here and what an excellent experience! They were out of the vegan special but they still whipped one up for us! Very kind staff and inviting environment. We will definitely be back!
Beautiful old train station and they have kept and built on the features from the original building. Huge patio in the back with large picnic tables. Our food was good, fish and chips.A lovely young waitress, Danica who had a delightful sense of humour. Danica was not wearing a mask and we asked why not as she was doing everything possible to follow the Covid suggestions. She told us that some of their regular older male clientele harass her when she wears a mask as they want to see her pretty face. Shame on those ignorant, brainless idiots! So she is going to work at another establishment that supports being safe for employees and clients, good for you Danica.
Coach and Horses has always been consistently good, but tonight left me feeling a little disappointed. Im fairly certain they have a new cook in the kitchen, and tonight, Im sad to say; the food was... not good. The beef in the beef dip was very, very tough, dry and much too thick. There was no horseradish, as the menu stated, the bun was tough and the gravy, Im fairly certain was out of a package. For dessert, we opted for the sticky toffee pudding which weve always enjoyed there. Tonight, it was a disappointment as well, and Im again thinking it was microwaved out of a package, had no toffee and very little (if anydates in it.The service was friendly and helpful as always, however; the food quality has gone way down since our last visit. Were hoping this was just a bad night in the kitchen, as this has been one of our favorites in Nanaimo!
Love eating here! The service is amazing and the food is to die for. It does tend to be a bit more expensive however its worth every penny. Chicken and veggie pie is my personal favorite and deep fried pickles. Will always continue to come back
It was very clean and the food was excellent.Loads of space to safe distance, inside and out.The patio is huge, around back. The staff were courteous and funny.
Good vegan selection, gluten free falafel.. If youre not a fan of spring onion you may want to mention that before ordering. Also, good atmosphere and I like that I can have supper with my kids there. Thx.
I havent eaten there but Id like to - apparently they have a bunch of great vegan choices. Its a really cute pub with a good selection of drinks. My only complaint is that I dont love the British style of having to order at the bar. I prefer having a server but I guess theyre being authentic!
Full vegan menu and lots of drink options. Bar service. Chill vibe.
Awesome separate vegan menu where even the drinks menu indicates the vegan-friendly options!
Pretty good veggie burger. I HUGELY APPREICATE THAT I CAN GET FRIES AND SALAD with my burger. I love the veg gnocchi. The amazing whole vegan menu is so forward, I really like that even as someone who likes non vegan food too. The atmosphere is a warm old english pub. Service is good still even though some great, attentive, laid back servers have left sadly.
Superb experience for the last year booking monthly for a community group of 20-30. Staff is friendly and management is accommodating and proactive. We chose it for the location, flexibility (thanks for the private roomand, not least, the high quality food options, including a committed vegan menu and dedication to other food sensitivities. A pleasure every time! We will be coming back as long as youll have us.
Provides the look, feel, and ambience of an old English style pub, complete with dark wood interiors and and outdoor patio for the summer months. Theres a full selection of craft beers, both local and from overseas, and lots of pub fare in the food department. On both occasions my food was plated quite minimally, so much so that I thought it might not be enough, but I was quite surprised to find that this is just how they do it here, and it was more than enough to nourish my hunger on an empty stomach. They also have live music occasionally, and a private-ish back area you can rent/reserve. 10/10 would recommend.
Great food and good selection of beers on tap! The staff are always friendly. Familys are welcome and they have one of the only (if not THE onlydog friendly patios in Nanaimo!Service can get a little slow when they are busy but other than that, no complaints. We love the burgers and fries! Try the poutine also, you wont be disappointed.
I the visiting family in Nanaimo and we decided to go for some British food, being British. We came across this place. The food was pretty good, but the prices are insanely high. Understandably, the restaurant was very empty. Being empty, especially during Lunch hour, we almost left. For traditional British food, it seems insane to spend nearly $15 for a single scotch egg and a light salad. That was the cheapest meal on the menu. The Ploumans platter was over $30. So, if you want to eat British food for an insanely high price and are willing to pay that much, it is a pretty good restaurant.
5 stars for having a full vegan menu available, with a variety of options, and desserts too. Wow. Thank you. Also the atmosphere is nice, relaxed, easy location, patio which allows dogs. Variety of drinks. Food is pretty good. One of the FEW places in Nanaimo that Ive ever gone to more than once.
Tasty food, extensive vegan menu. Had the bangers and mash. Not as good as crow And gate but still good. Way less busy and much more room than crow and gate. Much more centrally located too. Good place to come and grab a pint with your friends.
Food was amazing. Had falafels for appy and I had their blackened chicken sandwich with curry carrot soup. Waifu had the beyond meat vegan burger and fries . Their kitchen is top shelf portion and flavour. Beers were cold and average priced, serving staff was pretty friendly. I like that you order at the bar and then sit down personally but some people might be turned off by servers not coming to their table. I actually really like it myself.
Nice patio for the summer, but expensive food and beer. English style pub means youve got to go in and get your own beer.
Cute English-style pub, super extensive menu with VEGAN OPTIONS!! Cant tell you how exciting it was to see the vegan menu. The fish and chips was the perfect fishy texture! So impressed 10/10 will come again.
We went out as a group of 4 on saturday night to the Horse and Carriage. We were slightly disappointed to find there wasnt any live music, but it didnt detract from the fun we had. They usually do have music on saturdays, Im told.I drank non-alcoholic beverages, but my friends enjoyed a good selection of locally brewed beers as well as the usual lineup of beers and wine.We were delighted to find that they have a vegan menu alongside their regular menu that hosted a good selection of vegan friendly foods. We are not vegan but cannot say enough good things about the Byeond the Meat burger they are serving!!! It was one of the best burgers Ive ever eaten. The service was good and friendly. You order at the bar in typical English-Pub fashion, but they had staff clearing tables very quickly.I will definitely go back for that burger - and this time I wont be sharing.
This was a great find from searching for vegan food on the Happy Cow app. The Coach and Horse has a real pub food feel to it. Good selection of beer. The food menu has traditional pub fare, and surprisingly a whole menu of vegan dishes. We had the falafel to start - very tasty in the creamy Caesar sauce. Then the chickpea curry and shepards pie for mains - both were tasty and good portions. They also indicate on the beer menu which beer are vegan. Great service, great atmosphere, great food & drinks!
We were super impressed with the vegan only items side menu. This is the first pub Ive ever been to as a vegan where I felt totally comfortable and at home. HUGE bonus points for indicating which beers and alcohols were vegan on the main drinks menu (of which almost all are). The food was delicious! Service was great! We will definitely be dropping in next time were in Nanaimo. Has a classic pub feel, lots of seating, and vast pint menu.
Ordering at the bar is pretty fun. I like the casual atmosphere and spacious interior. Wings Not Wings from the vegan menu was really tasty, if a little small portioned. Had a local beer on tap and it went down really well. Ill be back.
Great staff, great food! They had a musician playing who was absolutely amazing. I wish I remembered his name as he was worth mentioning.
New owners and a phenomenal vegan menu which is truly vegan and prepared with separate kitchen utensils! They had the Beyond Burger before A & W. Their vegan pulled pork sandwich is delicious and they even have vegan drink options. I cant wait to try more of their vegan menu. Try it out then spread the word!
Awesome service! Despite the fact there is no table srevice the wait satff are all very accommodating and helpful. I went with two people with restricted diets and the kitchen/ menu had number of great options to choose from. (Vegan and gluten freeWe all thoroughly enjoyed our meals. Can recommend, I will be returning with friends!Pretty cool digs as well.
First time at this establishment. The staff were very helpful, friendly and inviting. The food was standard it is cost. It didn’t take long before food was served. Portions were generous, more so the quality of fare was well above average. They also had a great acoustic duo, very talented and a great sing-a-long set list.
A nice heritage railway station converted into a beautiful bar and restaurant after suspension of train services . This establishment has very good ambiance with friendly and cheerful waitress. Excellent customer service one will really enjoy. Prices are competitive to any other bars in town. When you are in Nanaimo it is worth a visit here for an evening or for lunch. They have huge hall for multipurpose under renovation above the main floor. Plenty of outdoor seatings with huge umbrellas right next to railway tracks. 2 hours fee parking is available on streets. It is at Selby St between Fitzwilliam and Franklin st.
Great staff and great atmosphere. Had the Cod Bites which were fantastic, and their chicken wings are actually large, meaty and substantial, unlike so many other places with tiny mini-wings. Southwest Salad was very good as well. Seems like many people order the poutine, and they have a good selection of interesting looking varieties. A large beer selection on tap if thats your thing, and an overall very welcoming atmosphere. ++ Recommended.
I have really enjoyed the food here, and so did everyone else in my party. Good atmosphere, friendly service. Not the fastest service, but nothing to complain about. Felt like an authentic pub. Good space for larger group. Love the use of the old train station. Not entirely clear where one should go after entering the front door, especially if you have reservations. Some signage as you come in would be helpful. Was happy to take out-of-town guests here.
