Te Ngākau Civic Square, Wellington, 6011, New Zealand, Wellington
Vibrant gallery with contemporary works by New Zealand & international artists, plus various events.
Really enjoyed the Joanna Paul exhibition. I am often disappointed by what is on offer at the City Gallery when I visit Wellington. But this was a real highlight of our trip this time.
Went to the cafe very nice cheese scones
Had to check out Glen Hayward exhibition. As an art student, he gave us a talk about persevering with our chosen art practice. Perfecting methods and results that express honed skill and say something unique. His works are just that. Formed entirely from wood and paint, please resist the urge to touch exhibits. Despite original items being metal, or utilitarian, or unappreciated furniture, Glen fashions them to scale. Ciggy butts, bottle caps, water fountains, prepped canvases- all are rendered with meticulous detail, down to patinas of use. Brilliant!
Cool art, its a shame the lady working there kept following us around & telling us repeatedly not to touch anything. Calm down love!!
Make your own mind up I guess 😅
A bit of a must see if youre passing by. You can spend 15 minutes or two hours here depending on your vibe. The staff are friendly and knowledgeable about the art on display.
Very modern exhibitions, not as much substance as I would like.
Enjoyed the Matarau exhibition. In particular Ming Ranginuis stuff.
This iconic gallery in the centre of Wellington caters to all artistic tastes and while its one of many quality galleries in the capital its expansive rooms allow artists and their collections to speak to the space and therefore to express the message of the work in a way some smaller galleries cant. The cute souvenir shop and popular (NikauCafe are an added bonus within this historical building.
Havent been for a few yrs. Was hoping to see some awesome, really old art/pictures, 1800s maybe etc. A car upside down with no doors on and a chair with a tyre on is not my kind of art.
Loved the hand with face
Fantastic exhibition on at the moment! Wish Your were here! Artist Glen Hayward, a Whanganui based sculptor!❤
What a truly lovely guy on the front desk today. Warm, welcoming and very informative. Thoroughly enjoyed our time looking round.
At the Hilma after art exhibition. Good facility. Used to be the central library in former life, till the newer earthquake prone one was built. So much of the civic square area is desolate and awaiting repair these days, like quite a bit of Wellington. Hopefully good times will return.
The Hilma AF Klint exhibition is worth every cent. One of the best exhibition by City Gallery Wellington.
Got to see the Hilma af Klimt show on its last day. Excellent show, great to a curatorial team that brings exciting shows to New Zealand.Audio description was very informative
I went to see the paintings of Hilma af Klint. The first room I went to had the huge, amazingly impressive Temple canvases. They were hung in a dramatic line along one wall. They absorbed and overwhelmed me.The watercolours were interesting, the downstairs had smaller oils and older works. Everything was beautifully displayed for maximum effect. The staff were helpful and discreet.
Great coffee with healthy wholesome eats! Had Oaterys owner Annas take of sugar and gluten free banana 🍰. Simply divine and healthy.
We visited to view the Hilma af Klint exhibition. Well laid out, good lighting, serene atmosphere. a few handy seats for a rest. Shop has a small but tidy range of stock.
Dropped in to see the Hilma af Klint exhibition.Very impressive. I find it hard to believe she was pioneering this style just over 100 years ago - an artist well before her time.Definitely worth a viewing.
Really enjoyed the Hilma Af Klint exhibition this morning - an amazing artist, truly inspired & gifted.
The exhibitions are beautifully curated. The staff are courteous and helpful. A "must" when visiting Wellington.
Stunning exhibit! Loved the book that they (the Museumcreated to go with the Hima af Klint exhibit! Staff were very friendly!
A great asset to Wellington city. Friendly and capable staff. Great gift store with high quality merch
I really love the style of the building as well as the interior design: Art Deco and simplicity combined to show the contrast.
Did not enjoy the Hilma af Klint exhibition. Her technique was good, but the subject-matter was a bit obscure, even with the translation on the brochure. Not my cup of tea.The gallery itself has some lovely spaces to exhibit works.
The Hilma Klint show is a must see, its crazy to think art work like this was being produced in the early 1900s, its challenging, progressive, large, abstract, spiritual, surreal and ahead of its time. Dont miss it !
exhibitions of Hilma af Klint The Secret Paintings is on going now.
Look great from outside, will visit inside next time
Very very limited display, totally worthless place to visit.
We skipped the big special exhibit as it contained potentially disturbing imagery. The rest was okay. Not as much art as I would have liked, lots of empty space. Be nice to see more traditional art along with all the modern stuff. Maybe Im getting old?
I saw an amazing performance here with the nose flute and other interesting instruments, bones, greenstone all used to make beautiful and haunting sounds plus haunting singing in te reo. Fabulous!
Worth a wander through. The main exhibit at the time was very video based, and we were warned that there were some intense themes. Based on that, I decided not to watch some of the videos, but there was a lot of other unique art to explore
Its not you. Its me.I like having a wander in a gallery to see what is going on but Im not so crazy for art that I am a regular gallery goer. I think that means I have a bit less patience than some people and the art needs to grab my attention quickly. Mostly the stuff Ive seen here hasnt done that.It could also be that they often have fairly edgy stuff and Im a bit soft - particularly on my old age.The staff are friendly, knowledgeable and enthusiastic. The spaces are great and the building is beautiful. This could easily be your cup if tea - and if you dont go you wont know. But I prefer, Te Papa, Pataka, The Dowse and Expressions.More misses than hits here.
The outdoor installations were the best part, the main exhibition wasnt appropriate for my 11 year old which the man at the front desk advised so we didnt see it.
I try to take in with my eyes as well as much as can be physically possible, every time I leave my art studio, im literally trying to see everything, and why not? Ive got warehouses, and factories of room with which to store more knowledge, I can never stop learning thank you 😊 ⭐🌟⭐🌟⭐🌟⭐🌟⭐
Thoroughly enjoyed the thought-provoking contemporary works and installations. Be sure to revisit as the exhibits change regularly. There is a theatre for film screenings as well.
Not my cup of tea but glad I visited the bizarre gallery
Experience depends solely on what exhibitions are being shown.Still one of the best things to do in Welly, plus its free!...theres a creepy, hand dude on the roof now.

Well talk to the hand I guess. That installation provokes! Its a cool place to visit. Plus I love the civic square on a sunny day.
Great exhibits in a great space with very knowledgeable staff.
Very nice exhibitions, I was amazed by the Semiconductor: Technological Sublime. All the sounds and images shown blew my mind
Actual gallery should supposed to have more interactive arts. I appreciate more the public square outside the city gallery building
Free entry! Hard to go past that on a rainy day. The building itself is lovely and the staff are nice, but the exhibitions didnt grab me. I guess I must be a bit of a heathen. The exhibition spaces were great.Expect modern and contemporary art and you wont be disappointed.
When I went there, there was an expo about the group of artists (mainly musicians"from scratch". Interesting and interactive, a bit small. Other sections of the museum were changing artists and temporary closed.Staff really friendly and helpful.
Wasnt overly impressed with the work on show when l went, a couple of things grabbed me mind. Nevertheless worth a visit as everybodys tastes/interests are different.
If youre a fan of contemporary art, then youll be at home in this gallery. Though seems like a big building, it seems small when youre navigating it. Free entrance, and staff are friendly and knowledgeable.
It was OK. Some good, some average stuff. Staff nice enough and its free, so pop in to get inspired.
I only gave it 4 stars because I didnt like the exhibit currently on display. Otherwise, this gallery is free, has excellent facilities, and a layout that works well for visitors.
