Haiti, Hinche
Built in the 19th century, this massive, iconic fortress with cannons offers dramatic views.
This fort was a breath taken. I cannot belive for a monument that was built in 1806 with animal blood, sands and lime, and yet still standing.
Go up on foot or by horse. But its one heck of climb. The angle of climb, if not used to it will tire you out quickly. So going slow is best. Horses carry you up and back down. Your money is the limit.
I was 19 years old at the time 41 Yeats ago, not knowing the history nor the accomplishments which the descendants of Africa had on the world. What I learned that day has never left me. Born an American citizen but I am Haiti, it instilled such a pride to be who I was. Not what the American society has classified us as but my own ability to know whom I am and embrace my true blackness
Its mind blowing how Roi Henry Christophe and co. pulled that off. The architecture is out of this world. Every single spot is a piece of art, its like walking through a Van Gogh gallery.Id suggest to the trip all the way up there by walk at least once, it hits different.
If you are really interested in Haitian history, you should plan a visit to the Citadelle. In addition to that you will undoubtedly be impressed by the size of this monument.
CITADELLE, MW RENMENW ❤️🇭🇹It was great, had a good time with friends learning more about my countrys history through such a beautiful site. One more thing, The walk, ladies and gentlemen, prepare yourself for a good sporting day if you dont work out regurlarly hahaaaa5 Gold Tips to enjoy this adventure:1. Dont drink too much water on the way.2. Dont walk too fast.3. Bring a speaker with your favorite songs makes you forget about the fatigue from the walk!4. Theres this little fountain halfway to the parking, ask for it so you can freshen up a bit if you want to.4. Lastly, take your time to enjoy the scenery/music provided by locals halfway to the Citadelle!
After that visit every part of my body hurts for 4 days but I cant wait to do it again. This should be in everyones bucket list especially if you are black and/or Caribbean born.
Incredible Fort. You get hassled a lot by the locals
A natural beauty! If you ever visit Haiti this a a place you must see! The fresh air, history and the view you will not get no where else! A+ totally recommend visiting La Citadelle! Be prepared for the horse ride to the top and bring water if you need to… Before the horse ride there is people selling stuff and might try heavy to convince to buy but no harm and you need to understand this place doesn’t receive alot of tourist yearly so support the locals however you can! It makes it the perfect destination since one one likes going to a place everybody has been to! there is locals selling water once you reach the top… Tip your horse helper since they take that route many times per day and it can get exhausting for them! Enjoy Haití!
It was exhilarating to set foot on such sacred grounds, having the privilege to see this tangible proof of my heroic ancestors vision, rich history and sacrifice.
It’s a place to visit at least once in your life.. foreigners or Haitians go with your friends, alone or as a couple, as you want.. you won’t regret it! Btw, take advantage of horseback riding😅
The Citadelle always bring tears to my eyes. Reminds me with the right leader we can accomplish so much. But it also shows our lack of training for leadership and dedication to making Haiti our priority. This is my 5th visit and I can probably visit another 5 more times. BTW, dont walk up or down, just pay the $10.00 for the donkey! Enjoy the Citadelle Laferriere...
It is quite the hike. Beautiful views, lots of history
I never saw an historical place in the Americas like this one !!!! Its crazy !!!! The place have the most Bronze canons of the 18th century still standing like new. My goodness it is so beautiful !!! A must see !!!
Breathtaking site and views. Loved it. You go up on a horse and then a guide gives you a tour with great historical explanations. Definitely a must when visiting Cap-Haïtien
Very beautiful view...
This is a must see. Do not attempt to visit on a 3 wheel taxi or anything less than a truck or SUV with 4 wheel drive. We witnessed an accident from a vehicle not designed to climb a mountain. In a normal car it is a safe visit. Wear walking shoes because it is a hike involved! Definitely worth the trip.
As with all aspect of historical monuments maintenance is important to aid preservation. This location has amazing views I did not expect to see. The media portrayal of Haiti is so wrong. Theres so much natural beauty here. I highly recommend a trip here. I hope the government can spend some resources to restore and preserve this Citadelle.
Was a nice experience, I enjoyed it with my family and will recommend it to anyone that go visit Haiti.
Like it except for everyone trying to get more and more money..need barter skills and no guilt.
The place to be.I love my country 💙✅
Wow what an experience. Again was very educational , learned so much about my culture. Me. Jean Jacquelin our guide was the Best Every Haitian should come here a least once.
The citadel represents what a Haiti could have made wonderful. It was a very inspiring experience.
So historical and the view from the top was amazing
One of the top sites in Haiti for a reason. Absolutely spectacular views of the valley, surrounding mountains, and villages below. Walk or rent a horse up to the fortress at the top of the mountain.Situation regarding the guides is quite stressful, as you will be approached by dozens on arrival. If accompanied by someone on the way up, they will expect a tip. Best to communicate clearly if you’re not wanting their services/not willing to pay. Hoping that this gets organized sometime soon.
This is one of the best places to visit in Haiti. The view alone from the Citadel is amazing. Truely breathtaking. Though getting up there was an adventure in itself, it was so worth it! There are parts of the place that is dangerous to enter of course. (It was built in the 1800s.But we still got a very thorough tour of the Citadel and have lots of memories and pictures to last us a lifetime. Loved it here! Highly recommend!!
A beautiful historical place in Haiti. The people and land are just beautiful. You can feel yourself going back in time. We had to take horses up to the Citedal. You can also choose to take the motor bikes to go up. My horse ended up being old and had a hard time making the last of the climb. The people bombard you in trying to sell you trinkets and souvenirs, which I would have bought it I had the money. There were so many beautiful artistic stuff there. The locals also preferred American money and many spoke English. They like to hustle do just be careful when it comes to negotiating prices.
The biggest monument in Haiti, built by King Henry Christophe, in the 19th century. Its so amazing, wonderful, incredible, magic. Theres no complete word to describe it. People always ask a lot of questions about it, like: how did the build it? How did they get the top of this high mountain with water, materials? How many men did this? Who was the engineer? Who was the architect? Where did they study before? Thats so great.. so if you are in the North of Haiti, come to Milot, in jump up to the Citadelle Laferrière.
1 month latter and im still impressed by how huge and beautiful the place is, recommended to visit 300% if you are in north Haiti
The 4 mile hike up is definitely worth it to learn about this historic fortress the Haitians built by hand to guard their land!! The scenes are beautiful from 3000 ft above sea level!! The hike isnt easy but I promise its worth every drop of sweat!!
A wonderful place, for having a rich historical review of the epic King Henry Christophers story.
Even better if you take the walk to the Fort
Very Beautiful place and good history to learn about Haiti 💪🏽🇭🇹
A beautiful and historical place with a view that is unforgettable. Be prepared for the hike or you can choose to take a horse. Wear comfortable clothes and durable sneakers!
I’ve been here 4 times and love it. It is a historic national treasure and a testament to the greatness of the Haitian people after the revolution. The architecture is amazing and it remains one of the only military sites in the world nearly perfectly preserved as it was the day it was abandoned in the 1840s. The beautiful walk up is challenging yet rewarding. Also a great place to get souvenirs and a cold prestige at the conclusion!
This place is part of the Haitian greatness. Over 200 years old, its amazing to see how strong the Fort is..
Nice historical place to visit. Built after the independence war of Haiti in order to protect the young republic of an invasion
I go to that place more then 10 times, and i always enjoyed it, you have to go visit this one, youll know more about Haitis history
If you ever visit Cap Haitien/ Au Cap, Haiti this historical site is a must. If you love hiking, hiking the Citadelle is a one of a kind experience. If you cant walk, there are horses to help you reach the Citadelle. Many thanks to our tour guide; he was very informative.
An amazing place that is not too hard to walk to, but you definitely need to be in good shape to make it from milot. Absolutely worth visiting and make sure you make your way around the whole fort outside of what the guides may show you
This place truely is Incredible! Make sure you plan your visit well, though! Know what time they close, hire a professional crew to get you there, and be careful with the horses. They are way too over worked and have sores on their backs from the saddles. Treat them kindly. Definitely one of the cooler places to see in Haiti
This impressive feat of Haitian architecture is well worth the visit!
Wear mountain climbing sneakers! The Citadelle is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is the largest fortress in the Americas. Built to protect Haitians from being re-enslaved and to demonstrate the power of the newly independent Haiti and the ability and intelligence of black people.
nice, a bit of freshness in this bloody hot country. Also going up and down by foot is a nice workout.
Beutiful place, excellent for pictures and amazing sight seeing, you have to have VERY good physical condition to make it up there on foot. You can take a horse, but be very careful with all the locals following you trying to get your money. Bargain!!!!! Never take the first price! Some will even take half of what they originally offered
Its amazing to see how our ancestor build such building without having all the technology we have today. Everything is well preserved
The largest fortification in the Americas.....and one of the Wonders of the Western World. Truly impressive
This is an amazing place and has the potential to be a great tourist destination. The poor tourism infrastructure makes it relatively expensive but that in itself is part of the experience. A patient your guide would have made the experience more fulfilling.
A long, hot walk uphill but absolutely worth it. Hire a guide, be generous to the street vendors if you can 👍
What a ride up on the horse! I couldnt believe the view or the magnitude of the fortress itself. Also, the history behind it and the fear that led its construction will blow your mind!
