The place brings light the history of the city through thousands of years while ignoring completely the Jews. The woman assisting spoke only Russian. No Hebrew and no English. This is an a bad place that tells a lie

Not many people know that Napoleon Bonaparte sieged it and failed. He was trapped in the moat surrounding the citadel. But this didnt prevent him from becoming the French Emperor.

Best attraction in Acco, requires a good 3 hour to do it justice... make sure to bring a big bottle of water as I was seriously dehydrated by the end. If you go on weekends or holidays theres a bunch of little shops towards the end where local artists sell stuff (otherwise the shops are closed)

Extraordinary visit in the well preserved buildings and streets of the old crusader city. It’s comprehensive and well presented so dedicate at least a couple of hours. The audio guide however is a disaster! Please please throw away the high tech automatic system and spend money on a basic functioning system. I spent half of my visit staring at the machine instead of the rooms, the audio guide content is good but it changes track automatically continuously in the middle of each track, it’s complete chaos.

The citadel exhibit gives a good overview of how this area was conquered and reconquered by many armies and great civilizations. Come armed with small change... it costs 3 shekels to use the restroom 😉

he Hospitallers are a military, monastic order devoted to caring for the sick in the Holy Land and to maintaining the personal safety of the pilgrims who flocked to the holy sites. They managed hospitals in Jerusalem and in Acre. Already by the first years of the Crusaders settlement in Acre, the Hospitallers were given property in the city. This was first documented in 1110, when King Baldwin I allowed them to own buildings north of the Cathedral of the Holy Cross which they received as donations. In 1135, some of the orders buildings were damaged when the site of the Cathedral was expanded northward. This event led the Hospitallers to abandon the site they had occupied and to start to build a new center in the northwestern section of the city, adjacent to the northern wall of 12th century Acre. This is the Hospitaller Center as we know it today. This center was first documented in the days of Queen Melisande (1149), when a church named after St. John was built in the Hospitaller quarter south of the new center. In 1169, a pilgrim by the name of Theodoric visited Acre. Among his impressions of his journey to the Holy Land, he describes the Hospitaller center as a most impressive, fortified structure to which only the Hospitaller fortress can be compared.Further to the downfall of the Crusader Kingdom in the Battle of Hattin (1187), Acre fell into Moslem hands and its Christian inhabitants fled. They returned to Acre four years later (1191when it was conquered by Richard the Lionhearted, the King of England who headed the Third Crusade along with King of France Philippe Auguste. The Hospitallers returned to Acre, however the buildings that served them in the 12th century no longer met their needs at the time since Christian rule did not resume in Jerusalem in the wake of the Third Crusade. The Order lost its main stronghold and its headquarters, which were in Jerusalem. Renewed concessions granted to the Order by the new rulers of the Kingdom – Guy de Lusignan (1192and Henry of Champagne (1193– enabled the Hospitallers to expand their center in Acre up to the street adjacent to the citys walls to the north. This led to renewed construction whose aim was to transfer the head of the Order and its headquarters to Acre. This construction process, which began in the late 12th century and continued throughout the 13th century, encompassed expanding the Hospitaller quarter and adding new wings and additional floors to the old center. Moreover, the Hospitallers constructed buildings in the new quarter – the Montmusard quarter – which expanded the citys boundaries to the north and was surrounded by new walls of its own.

Amazing architecture and fascinating history. Its shocking to learn that such beautiful structures were buried by later people due to religious differences and new structures were built on top, then excavated much later when old parts were discovered by accident.

A rather interesting mix of historical narrative and archaeological remains along with an amazing view over central Jerusalem. The audio guide was surprisingly good, with its whimsical conversational interludes between the staff. The only criticism would be that the audio guide rather goes silent towards the end, around the time of the Crusaders onwards.
