Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia, Dzuunmod
Early 1900s Buddhist monastery with several temples displaying ancient art & cultural artifacts.
Beautiful location and located downtown Ulaanbaatar near thr Shangrila Hotel. Museum staff are limited on English speakers but the temple is worth seeing.
It’s a compound of many Buddhist temples showcasing the history of Buddhism in Mongolia and people who brought them. The temples’ physical structures are ancient Chinese buildings from outside yet Tibetan architecture and design inside. There are Tibetan Thangkas well preserved in some temples. In other temples, there are artefacts of tantric Buddhist lamas and shamans. The whole museum is a combination of Buddhism, Shamanism, and Taoism beliefs. But you have to pay if you want to take photos besides ticket fee. It’s not worth. Just walk in and explore all those temples.
I visited alone after lunch, and I was the only visitor. In the main building, a middle-aged female employee and two young women followed me around and watched me whenever I moved. But the three women talked so loudly that I couldnt see the exhibition, so I came out quickly.
Excellent MuseumYou can get to know a lama temple better however it was so different from other Lama Temples I have been before
Nice location, great heritage
1904 (rebuilt in 1934)The Choijin Lama Temple Museum is a museum located in the central part of Ulaanbaatar, the capital of Mongolia. The construction of the 8th Jebtsundamba Khutagt for his younger brother Choijin Lama Luvsankhaidav began in 1904 and was completed in 1908.
Absolutely lovely place to visit if you have 30minutes to spare for yourself and national heritage!
What a spectacular museum! My favourite in the whole city. The Chojin Temple Museum had 5 sections to it and each had a different meaning/purpose.Like most of the museums I visited in Mongolia, theres a ticket price for entry and an additional cost to take photos. While this was I think the most expensive museum I visited, GET THE PHOTOGRAPHY TICKET! The colours in the main hall with all the characters from the Cham Dance immediately made the extra cost worth it. The Cham Dance is an elaborate performance primarily from Tibetan Buddhism. Along the way, you get to see some impressive pieces of art while getting a view of the outside courtyards each time you go to a new temple. What really stuck out for me though was you eventually get to a temple depicting the Buddhist version of Hell. Such graphic imagery and great explanations. The staff were also quite friendly and knew how to explain much of it in English.
19th century building and artifacts. Has 5 small temples with different theme.
Very rich museum of the Choi-jin lama which lived 19th centuries.
One of the greatest historical palace museum. If youre travelling to Mongolia and especially staying in UB must visit there.
Quaint museum in Central Ulaanbaatar. Not a lot of context available in English to explain what youre looking at, but lots of neat 19th century artifacts.
Looks quite run-down. Costs 8000T/pax to enter and you need to pay extra for photos.Probably most interesting would be the personal chamber for the Lama’s “tantric exercises”.
Amazing place, crowded by Buddhist statues and artefakts. Unfortunately, the price for taking pictures is quite high; the ticket is 8000 Tugriks and for photographing 50000 (!)
An eccentric Buddhist spot surrounded with skyscrapers
Very similar to the Bogd Khan museum from the outside but I found the display inside far better than the more well known Bogd Khan museum. It is sad that you have to pay a ridiculous fee of 50,000Tugruk to take photos inside besides the 8,000 Tugruk entrance fee.It is sad that this historical place has almost been swallowed by the skyscrapers around it. There is a very loud Karaoke bar next to it and it was hard to find a moment of peace inside with the loud music playing in the adjacent building(on a Saturday morning).Still a good place to visit if you have traveled half the globe to visit Mongolia. Behind the Blue Sky hotel building with a few coffee shops nearby.
Small but interesting Lamaist Buddhist temple for knowing the culture and history.
A beautiful Mongolian temple built in traditional Tibetan Buddhism style. Well worth spending time in the main temple to see all of the wonderful pieces on display. You have to pay extra to take photos inside, which is a tad stupid, but you can sneak in the odd photo here & there.Make sure to look at the ceiling detail. Hell is depicted in one section.
Amazing temple with rich history among high risers!
Currently being restored. I really enjoyed my walk around this little complex, which is now being overshadowed by large several stories high modern buildings
Worth seeing, located in the middle of the city. Tourist friendly place, English translations of the boards were available. We got our names written in old Mongolian by a nice Mongolian guy.
The place is amazing but the camera fee to take pictures is ridiculously expensive
Sadly not all is accessible but this was a true gem in the middle of a big and very eclectic city.
This temple looking so different and so beautiful
Closed AGAIN- very erratic hours which arent posted. Great history but closed more often than not. Ive tried 6 times in 18 months, weekdays and weekends, no luck.
Its a shame, its a cool looking old building but it looks like it is falljng apart.
Very interesting, good gift shop
One of the historical and beautiful place in the heart of UB city!
The workers here were all very nice and polite and escorted us from building to building. They were able to answer our questions and were extremely hospitable. Thank you!
Beautiful historical place in Ulaanbaatar. It.s close to our office
If you are traveling in Mongolia, this is one of the place you must see in town. You may find historical and art exhibits which I think precious in our history. Really glad that this site left as it is until today.
Very interesting place. Take your time visiting all buildings, its worth. Main door at south side.
Really beautiful temples, with a lot of colours and perfect items of art - for me, specially the masks! Really loved it!
Right in the heart of city, this is a perfect museum/temple to explore. It’s only a fragment of the great Khan dynasty that used to exist but it’s amazing to observe the architecture from so many different cultures that once belonged to this empire. Small entry fee and amazing costume collection also
You can see the dynamic of historical building and modern buildings there. one of the should-visit places in UB.
Magnificent temple and museum, a great example of Buddhist heritage of Mongolia. The traditional architecture and relics within make this temple worth the visit.
Good temple museum to visit. Worth an hour or two as its close to the main square.
Amazing ancient place along skyscrapers. Definitely worth to see.
Temple is located just behind the main square. There are around 5 smaler temples on the territory of the museum. It doesnt take long to check everything there. Also, get into gifts shop - they have some good handmade stuff.
Beautiful palace, traditional buddiest temple, nice architecture
Beauttiful architecture, peaceful place to relax.Entrance ticket price for adults: 8000MNT,for College students: 3000MNTfor kids: 1500MNT
A traditional Buddhist temple with literally no single person walk in.The hell painting inside is pretty scary. Sadly to see the place become real historic site or tourist site which no use in community anymore.
Peacefull place to visite in the mits of a bussie city. Very kind People they opent every door for us
Nice temple in the centre.Interesting to see t stand in the middle of buildings...
A nice place for tourists to visit. Very informative and guides are available. Not too expensive for 8k entrance fee too. Would recommend!
Very peaceful place in the middle of a very busy city. Several temples to visit. The lady in the gift shop is very knowledgeable and has excellent English. Yes she will try to sell you stuff, but not at all pushy. Large selection of literature on Mongolian culture and history.
Tiny place but very well kept and meaningful if you are into Buddhism. Bonus small gift shop at the end.
Such an old sacred place that you can see the way Choijin Lama lived and many other precious monuments and arts and master pieces of an old times
Amazing Buddhist temple and museum of Buddhism in Mongolia. Worth visiting. Temperatures in winter are same as outside so dont expect warmth.
Quite interesting museum, however ticket price is high comparing to small exhibition.
