The Chinnar and Pambar rivers are the major perennial water resources in the sanctuary. The Chinnar originates near Kumarikal Malai, follows the interstate boundary along the northwest edge of the sanctuary for 18 km and becomes the Amaravati River in Tamil Nadu. The Pambar River originates in the Anaimudi Hills and is joined by seasonal rivulets and a few perennial streams originating from sholas in the upper reaches. It traverses the Turner’s Valley in Eravikulam National Park and flows down into the sanctuary through the Taliar Valley between Kanthalloor and Marayoor villages and eastwards through the sanctuary. It joins the Chinnar River at Koottar. The Thoovanam water falls lie deep within the sanctuary on the Pambar River. This cascade is a major tourist attraction. The Chinnar, Pambar, Kabani and Bhavani are the only rivers of the 44 in Kerala that flow eastwards

Flora and fauna are wonderful. This place wont disappoint you in any climate. Best best time for visits is Summer, I would say. You can spot more animals during summer. There are two treks available. One specifically towards Thoovanam waterfall and another one at chinnar forest nearby checkpost and office. If you are more interested in wildlife sight seeing, then go for the second one. One tribal guide will accompany you all the time. Elephants, Gaur, Different types deer, Nilgiri Tahr are easily found.

One of the best place for a weekend getaways. Services offered by the CWS foresters team are great. Much appreciated for their kind assistance. A must visit place for all age groups. However, the online booking system has a lot flaws and some information that needs to be updated. For any changes in booking, online system is not applicable and the contact information provided are difficult to reach that adds more stress. Please note that the Refunds are always provided promptly with a proper response upon writing an official email to the Munnar Wildlife team. Thanks team and hope to see a better online booking experiences.

Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary in Idukki district is home to the Great Grizzled Squirrel of India. Numbering less than 200, they are among the most endangered species on the planet. The unique location of the sanctuary in the Western Ghats has ensured it gets less than 2 months of rainfall annually. The wildlife along with the deciduous trees makes it an ideal spot for trekking aficionados.  The beautiful sandalwood forest nearby is highly recommended for a visit. One can view herds of gaur and elephants strolling around casually in this area.  Dry deciduous forests, high ranges and some grassland add to the diversity of the sanctuary. While making the journey from Karimuthi to Chinnar, spotted deer, sambar, hanuman langur and peacocks can be spotted alongside the road.

It was a daring ride through the dense forest. The road towards the Destination is very narrow and so the speed limit. It is advised to take this route during day time so that u can enjoy the view of Anamalai forest , and if your lucky you can watch birds, animals etc in this route.DONT TAKE THIS ROUTE during night as its very risky to drive. And there are chances of sudden fog hindering the visibility to the road.

Reached there by morning 11 am.Half an hour travel from karimutty waterfalls, but the way is full of sharp turns so keep a watch out.The area is basically in the Kerala tamil nadu border and its only 55 kms from palani.Regarding the place, they have a small restaurant with the basic amenities. The people there told us about the trekking options through the forest and riverside. The cost was 250/- per head for an hour and 300/- per head for 3 hours.Opted for the one hour option since we were in a hurry. Two people assisted us and imparted knowledge regarding the place, how different type of animals are observed, how the tribal people are living on the other side etc.The watch tower view is mesmerizing and the climb is something to look forward to.The walk on the riverside is known for a soothing effect. They are also providing stay at tent options amounting to 3500/- for two people including food and 1000/- for extra heads.Do ask for any kind of assistance as most of the people working there are localites and know their way around almost anything

♥ Spotted Deer, Sambar, Hanuman Langur and peacocks can be spotted alongside the road.♥ Its home to the Great Grizzled Squirrel of India, which are among the most endangered species on the planet.♥ An ideal spot for trekking.♥ The beautiful Sandalwood forest nearby is a must visit.♥ Herds of Gaur and Elephants can be seen strolling around casually in this area.🦜 Birdwatchers paradise, 📸→ Visited during the Covid time, Munnar is open for tourists. As per the locals, its said that no Covid cases has been reported there, and they believe that its because of the pure air that the pandemic has not affected them.→ Visitors who want to enter TamilNadu, need to register at Tamilnadu check post through e-register, which is instant.→ Visitors to Kerala need E-Pass, which you need to register from the Jagrata Portal website, (better to use this website in lap/pc as its difficult to register using mobile, very poor UX), need ID Proofs as well, upto 5 person can be registered under 1 ID.

Loved the place, beautiful and serene. What hurt me the most is the trash, that was thrown near a small village on the way to Munnar. It was hurtful to see it, I have attached the pic here. Hope someone finds it and takes necessary actions. I dont the exact location but, It is near the first stop you find going from Tamil Nadu to Munnar. Near the tea shop(pic attached).

Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary is one of the well-known travelling regions in Kerala locale. The Wildlife Sanctuary of Chinnar is situated in the Kanthalloor and Marayoor panchayats in the Idukki locale of the South Indian Territory of Kerala. The location of the sanctuary is in the rain deprived district on eastern inclines of Western Ghats, bordering Tamil Nadu. This region is rich in ethnic social legacy and decent variety in a biological community.Unlike any other natural asylums of Kerala, this sanctuary gets two months of rain each year. The Western Ghats including all of Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary and other wildlife mountain havens in the Anamalai extend is under the thought of being assigned as a World Heritage Site by the UNESCO World Heritage Committee. The lovely Sandalwood backwoods adjacent is exceedingly suggested for a trip. During a visit you can see crowds of elephants and gaur walking around calmly here. Dry deciduous woodlands, some prairie and high ranges provide a natural decent variety to the sanctuary. On a trip from Chinnar to Karimuthi, Sambar, Spotted Deer, peacocks and Hanuman Langur can be seen nearby the street. The great grizzled squirrel found in the Indian sub continent has made this Idukki sanctuary their home. With a population under two hundred, these are the most imperilled species in the world. Its remarkable area in the Western Ghats has guaranteed it gets only about two months of precipitation yearly. The wildlife alongside the deciduous forest makes it a perfect zone for trekking fans. Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary highlights two eco–shops, luxury cabins, interpretation centre, research cabin, and cafeteria to take into account the requirements of voyagers. The guests need to pay an ostensible measure of charge. The charge is distinctive for various areas of the sanctuary. Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary is well–associated with its adjacent urban areas and, accordingly, it can be effortlessly travelled by the guests. The accommodation in Sanctuary is available on the famous tree houses.

The river stream is so mesmerising and beautiful . The place is quite and calm . We also came to know it is a very rare sight to see the animals here but luck was on our side . Try to be there before 3 pm and start the 3pm trek , you can see the wild animals around 5:45 pm in the stream.

We have visited this place during march which was summer start in this area. This is about 15 km from marayoor town where we stayed. You have to take a ticket of 200 rs per person for trekking to the forest. A forest guide will be accompanying a group. Make sure you carry enough water as the whole trek takes around 3hrs to complete (total trek distance is 6-7 km). We were not able to see any wild animals. But guide told that if we go at early morning during intense summer then we can see some. If you are lucky, you will be able to see deers, wild bisons, elephants and rarely leopards. Guide told us that its completely safe since they know how to handle any situation if they have to encounter any wild animals. There are some streams flowing through the forest where you can relax and spent some time. Looks like this is a dry decidious forest since it is not very much green during summer unlike other forests in kerala. Please make sure that you do not leave any plastic bottles or covers in the forest. Carry them back with you and dispose them at dust bins placed near the entrance. This is a good place to visit if you are interested in mild trekking with your friends or family. This wont be suitable for older people and children below 5 yrs because of 6 km long trek and some steep slippery paths.

Excellent by all means. And this is an unexplored tourist destination. The local people contribute their interest for the development of tourism. The Forest Department has appointed them as Guides, Cooks, Drivers, helpers etc through Eco Development Committees of Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary. The tourists can stay in the hut, tree top or log house near the flowing river. Still I feel there is a lack of communication skills. Please note that it will take its own time to overcome this forms of undulating nature.

Honestly amazing. One of the best experiences of my life. We hired two trackers, one who walked ahead so that we didnt accidentally happen upon any wildlife. They were both extremely skilled, and even though we went during the worst time of the day to find any sort of animals, they found us 4 elephants and one was a baby! We also found a wild bison from afar. Totally breath-taking views even if you do not see any animals. Its 100% worth it no matter what-- views rival the grand canyon.

A wonderful place to familiarize the beauty of nature. Located near the borders of Kerala and Tamilnadu, this place offers trekking experience along with opportunities to watch animals plying around the forests. There is a tourist help centre as well as a small restaurant which helps us refresh after a long journey. Kerala tourism department offers trekking experience which provides a guide to help us. The guides are really helpful and clears our doubts. They helps us detect animals. The best way to see animals here is to stay at the sanctuary. We took an evening trek and an early morning trek in the sanctuary with two guides. Saw a lot of animals... giant grizzly squirrel, Peacocks, deer, Bison, elephants, Cock-head serpent eagle etc. It was thrilling to follow wild elephants whilst making sure not to be spotted by them. loved the experience. There are a lot of monkeys at the sanctuary. We stayed at the Karakkad tree house. It is a truly adventurous experience. There are no lights, fans or washroom inside the tree house. Its just a room on the tree with bed rolls provided. Only the dinner was served at the tree house, the guides are really helpful and the tree house was very clean. Book this place if you have an adventure streak. It is suited best for thrill-seeking couples, solo travelers, friends. We thoroughly enjoyed the experience. They provided us with candles for the night and ample supply of drinking water. All the meals were yumm..
