We ate dinner here before a show at Chesapeake Shakespeare theatre based on their ads in the programs. The escargot appetizer was good, lots of bread to soak up butter and garlic. Main courses were steak pomme frites which was well prepared and a lamb presse with cauliflower and root purée which was excellent. The eclair caramel was outstanding not too sweet

From start to finish our meal was spectacular. I highly recommend the escargot and the rabbit dish. It feels like the menu changes often so try to get there before the rabbit is gone!

Our first experience was with the prix fixe Valentines menu, but each bite was delicate and delicious and a successful tease to make us want to go back for more. Looking forward to returning for a meal off their seasonal menu!

Chez Hugo was a fun pre-valentines dinner date with my husband! The hh was perfect prior to our reservation, the atmosphere was very warm and inviting. We had the pleasure of getting Ashley as our server and she was amazing! She was knowledgable about everything between the menu, drinks, and decor of Chez. The onion soup is TO DIE FOR! The escargot was amazing as well. I would highly recommend making a trip into Chez, you will not be dissapointed!!

I have come across reviews with regards to the burger being one of the better ones in Baltimore and since they dont do carry out decided to pop in for a quick lunch. I will say it was a really good one, my gripe is that i specified medium and it came out more rare than i would have liked, also a yelper did say that the bread is typically not as fresh on Tuesday. He was spot on, i will in future go on a different day. Service was good enough for my in and out dash

One of the most wonderful dinners I’ve ever had. Friendly atmosphere, great food and drinks too.I lucked out, as Chez Hugo was right across from my hotel. Ashley was my waitress and we had a great conversation. She is one amazing gardener!I had escargot, which rocked and combined with the charcuterie board, I left stuffed, unable to even think about desert.I visit Baltimore annually for a trade show and can’t wait to visit this special place again.

We went for New Years Eve dinner. They had a special menu of champange, truffles and fried chicken. It was truly the best fried chicken I have ever had at a restaurant. All the pieces, light or dark meat, were juicy and full of flavor. The buckwheat waffle with fois gras was crisp and decadent. My only complaint was the chicken lollipop with caviar. The chicken was amazing, very crisp with such tasty breading, but the caviar did not hold up to the chicken. It was only a very small dollop but it was not special. It did not burst with flavor the way it should have to match the chicken. I am excited to go back and try Chez Hugo another night and see if it holds up.

An amazing afternoon with very special friends on my 40th Birthday. Thank you to Chef Steve Monnier for the most spectacular appetizers, main dishes, dessert, and cocktails. Truly an evening that will last a life time. Chez Hugo is top-notch with everything! Love the whole crew there. Thank you again for making my day so special!

I went to Chez Hugo for the first time last night. The bartender suggested that I order the beet burger (BURGER DE BETTERAVES). I was a little skeptical but when I say that burger was PHENOMENAL that’s exactly what I mean!! It came with a little side salad that was good as well; I wanted to lick the plate...seriously. Lol. Also, the drink was good and the service was very nice and professional; I will be returning!

Very nice restaurant. Has a nice bar at the front to wait for your group or have a night cap. Dinners were very tasty and well presented. Menu changes regularly with the season. We got the ribeye pour deux and it was great! Worth to call for reservations.

The food was good (get the duck!!), but our waiter was visibly annoyed when we said we didnt want an appetizer in addition to our dinner drinks, and desert. This place is nice, but not a super fancy date night kind of place. I think the staff disagrees with that.

Good food but get there early because they do run out of entrees. Props to the servers graciously dealing with the insufferable woman next to us who had the chef debone her fish and serve peppers on the side, then complain about how her food looked unappetizing.

This was our first visit to Chez Hugo Bistro. It was a wonderful atmosphere, lovely decor and great music in the background; inside the same building as the Shakespeare Theatre. (I would like the restaurant to refer to this in their advertising. This would help those who are visiting for the first time.)I did not see a special Restaurant Week menu. Therefore, I was not pleased with my visit. Maybe if one goes at another time (not for lunch, for the Restaurant Week pre fix menu, you may have a different experience.)The menu was too limited for Restaurant Week summer 2019. The 2 selections that we were restricted to did not “ Wow” us for a chance to have “French or French inspired fare”. Both choices for the starters were cold servings. The “French fries” were fresh but TOO salty. The cheese on the cheese burger was excellent but choosing between a gourmet cheeseburger and a gourmet omelette is not my preferred way to start off “Baltimore Restaurant Week”.

The pommes frites (French frieswerent served with the usual sauces and were cooked too brown, just shy of being burned. But my medium cheeseburger was good, although a bit more bloody than I like, but it was well seasoned and didnt taste raw. The hamburger is served with gruyere cheese, whole seed mustard and caramelized onions. If you like more on your burger this isnt the place for you. I couldnt get a slice of raw onion. Makes me wonder how they made the caramelized onions. The service was good. And the menu is limited for the 2 hours they are open for lunch. If youre looking for a quiet place for lunch or a lunch meeting this would be a good place.I will return the next time I want a good burger.

The supposed-to-be French flavour is appealing, the service is a bit approximative, the fourtg star is earned by the steak: tasty and superbly cooked. It can easily become your place in the neighborhood.

It was an absolute pleasure to experience the atmosphere of the French bistrot in downtown Baltimore. I am French and being there reminded me of being home. With this restaurant the owner introduces a concept foreign to the USA, but very familiar to French people “le bistrot du coin”. An unpretentious place where you can eat simple and very French food at a reasonable price. A place that everyone can enjoy. I was especially impressed that the chef had the guts to put a merguez sandwich on his menu. And, as it turns out, it was the best merguez I have had since 1984, the year I left France!

Ashley was a wonderful waitress. We had the escargot, charcuterie, fried smelt, rigatoni, and the white asparagus custard. Everything was so on point. I spent half the time just baffled at how amazing the food was. We finished it off with the coffee pastry and the brown butter and almond thyme cake with lemon curd. Holy wow. It was a perfect meal all around. Extra shout out to Max, the bartender, for making the perfect dirty martini. We are just visiting Baltimore for a wedding, but if we are ever back in town, this would absolutely be our first stop.

My wife and I had a fantastic happy hour at Chez Hugo. We arent often in this part of downtown and decided to stop in. The happy hour and cocktails on the cuff were top notch. The rillettes were nicely made and my wife enjoyed the frites a la Hugo.We will definitely be back for dinner.

Went for their secret supper with the Baltimore Sun. For $100, you get 4 courses, one of which wasnt even edible, and 4 small pours of "paired" wines. Should have been "pared wines" because they pared the pours down so much. And each bottle was between 7 and 18 bucks. If you want to showcase your restaurant...this isnt the way to do it.

Excellent atmosphere and sitting at the bar might even be better than the dining room.Food was on point. The blood sausage sounds scary but no fear the iron does not over whelmed and excellent texture and the purree is perfect.Duck for two was more like duck for three. Heavy smoke so you best like bacon if you intend to order. Roasted root veggies and apples are delightful pairing for the protein.Only ding was for service. It was good but felt slow.

We were there for Thanksgiving and the french interpretation of the traditional meal was absolutely exceptional. The turkey was moist and smokey, with crusty skin, the gravy and stuffing very delicate and delicious, the spinach and gratin were really well executed. To finish we tried both the pecan pie and the pumpkin millefeuille, and they were also amazing.Add to this really great service and an overall attention to details which is not common, we really enjoyed it.

The food was exquisite! The French onion soup was so delicious; not a bowl of grease like I’ve had before. I ordered the duck to share with my cousin but the entire family ended up trying it! I also love how you can watch the kitchen make your food as well. Chez Hugo definitely earned the 5 stars!

First time at this restaurant. We went under the recommendation of a friend whos the chef of another restaurant in town. We were here at Thanksgiving, with a prix fixe menu, which couldve been subpar. Well... Let me tell you... This was an amazing meal. The open kitchen with its incredible wood fired grill, the pumpkin soup, with bacon and slivers of pumpkin and crème fraiche on top was incredibly tasty, not sweet or nutmeggy as one might expect. The turkey was juicy and flavorful, with a mildly smoky taste, the sides were delicious (from the potato au gratin, slightly al-dente, to the best creamed spinach Ive had, to the surprising sour dough stuffing and sweet potato duchesse), to the divine desserts (we tried both). It was just an amazing Thanksgiving meal. Will definitely be back with friends and family.

A welcome addition to the ever burgeoning downtown dining scene, Chez Hugo provides upscale french cuisine that is rivaled in Baltimore only by Petite Louis up in Roland Park. Excellent food with different options and shared portion sizes to meet the needs of your party. Great spot for a date night. Excellent service and atmosphere. A little expensive, but this place makes up for it in its charms.

Dont let the somewhat odd location deter you, this place is worth the visit. Wife and I went this Wednesday night and got the chanterelle dumplings and vegetarian pasta (forgot the nameas appetizers. We both got steak frites for entrees because we are simple minded people. For dessert my wife got the palova with berries, which she loved and insists on returning again this weekend for. Fantastic experience all around.

What a delight to discover a new French bistro in downtown Baltimore! Not only a commitment to the continuing revitalization, but actually to the birth of what will hopefully become another star in Baltimores "Crown of Cuisine". Chez Hugo is a revelation in almost every way - combining modern and traditional decor, occupying space with legends behind it, and producing food with authenticity and creativity. We were blown away by the location on a quiet block with a history of banking, insurance and law seeping through the facades of late 19th and early 20th century buildings. Chez Hugo occupies the former Merchants Club at 208 East Redwood, characterized by beautiful and ageless tile and wood paneling. The service and the food made it an extraordinary night.Four of us enjoyed vichyssoise, escargot, steak frites, merguez, monkfish, squash blossoms, ratatouille, several beautiful wines including a great languedoc, and equally appealing desserts.Open only about 4 months, Hugos is rising over the restaurant horizon rapidly, and from the size of the Wednesday night crowd, its "secrecy" will be short-lived. If I could give one suggestion, it might be some area rugs in the dining room to dampen the lively sound. We will be back, and soon!

I live 2 hours away from this restaurant, I would be wiling to travel this distance after eating here! I went for restaurant week, and I am always a little leary of restaurant week because of portion size. Although, first Quality: Excellent!! everything was so balanced, flavorful, and not over powering. Everything was cooked with detail. Portion: The best portions I have ever seen for restaurant week, which means that their portions outside of restaurant week will be the same. Service: Excellent, attentive, informative. Environment: The setting was beautiful, the food and setting gives off such a high quality dining experience. Everything was so enjoyable. I cant wait for my return there.

This place was just delightful. The food was interesting, flavorful, and darn near perfect, and everyone on the staff were truly lovely folks. My only suggestion is to not focus too hard on the online menu. Our waitress told us that they have been trying new things frequently (at the time of this review, they were only 3 months old). That said, the online menu is a great indicator of what they do have and what to expect, just don’t get your heart set on anything in particular. All in all, this was a wonderful meal, and I’m only sad that I don’t live closer to Baltimore so that I could go more frequently.

I may have had one or two foodie spiritual experiences eating at Chez Hugo last night. First off, everyone working there who I encountered was incredibly professional and friendly -- they clearly wanted to make sure it was the perfect dining experience for their guests. The ambiance is cozy and reminds me very much of Paris, especially the gorgeous bar. The kitchen is right next to the dining area, and is open so you can watch them prepare the food which is always fun. They accommodated our food restrictions and tweaked the recipe ingredients, which was beyond appreciated; so make note those of you with food restrictions -- you will be well cared for here. And the food.... OMG, I had to go thank the chef -- it was THAT good. I could have eaten a large bowl of the beet tartar appetizer. The entrees were sublime. The desserts (creme brulee and hazelnut cremewere the best way to end the meal, complemented by a little dessert wine. In fact, the wine selection throughout the meal was completely on point. Really, there was not a weak spot at all -- it was a delightful experience from the friendly welcome we got when we came in the door, to when we left, happy and full.My parents are visiting in a few weeks to see a show at Chesapeake Shakespeare Company (located right next door), so we are DEFINITELY going to get a preshow dinner at Chez Hugo! It is a great addition to the area, and I really dont think there is anything else like it in Baltimore.

I stopped pass Chez Hugo after an event at another restaurant on The Charmtastic Mile to see the new place. I was amazed by the European/French flair of Chez Hugo. I was greeted by a pleasant and professional host at the door. They have a nice mid size Bistro that is perfect for a downtown tourists, business person or date night. The Escargot was amazing cooked perfect. The offer a nice glass of Margaux that complemented the Escargot. I must return for the "Canard" Duck Breast & Duck Leg Confit. Bonjour!

Party of four where we sampled a variety of starters and entrees. The bar area and restaurant itself is quite inviting with a great downtown location. Would like a better bourbon considering the support Kentucky had in naming so many areas for french regions. Starters were frites (cause their fries), the Pate, winter squash and the tartare beets. Frites were fantastic and the beets surprised me by my loving them. Could use spoons for the squash and beets. Entrees were Chicken, Salmon (which they have since changedand Duck. Chicken and puree were traditional great french chicken (would like a bigger selection of chicken then just breast meat). The duck was very good and the salmon I am sure they took some very fine and changed it to make it outstanding. Service was good and clear they are working on refining it to a level I look forward to experiencing when I return. A new must for Baltimore.

Chef Stefano made recommendations that had me and my guest moaning with delight our entire meal! The peppercorn sauce that is served with the steak frites is by far the best I’ve ever had. The ‘wine expert’ knew more about wine pairing than the last two Sommeliers i’ve dealt with- passionate about wines and extremely helpful... ended up with a nearly perfect bottle of Bordeaux for $53! Finally, our server Max: sophisticated and friendly, and added just enough humor and table-side time that we were in love with him by the end of the meal. Will definitely become regulars here!

9 of us had a wonderful evening in the private room within Chez Hugo. We started with well executed cocktails in the bar and moved to our private room, where we had an exceptional meal. The presentation was exquisite, as one would expect from a fine French bistro, and the taste was sumptuous! The restaurant has only been open for one week, but the staff was functioning as a well oiled machine.I highly recommend Chez Hugo. It is so wonderful to have such a nice restaurant in our fine City.
