Tours & exhibits at the 19th-century summer residence of sculptor Daniel Chester French.
Highly recommend the guided tour. Full of facts and personal insights on the life and career of Chester French. A beautiful historic property !
wonderful experience on this tour with a very well informed and pleasant tour guide.
Do NOT miss this treasure. It closes the end of October. Get a guided tour. Superb. Do you think you know Lincoln??. Do you think you know the Lincoln Memorial??? Check ✔️ this place out to see if you know. This sculpturer is amazing. The grounds are idyllic and you will feel a calm that might challenge 2 martinis in a hot tub. The artist 🎨 is charismatic. What a great find. Must see. Trust me. Check out Chesterwood. Learn some history. The studio is amazing. Enjoy!
Nice overview at museum and better guide talk in seeing the grounds/studio. Worth the detour.
An excellent tour led by a very experienced (worked there since 1990and knowlegable representative of the museum. We learned so much about the buildings, property, and the works of Chester including the complex processes involved in marble and bronze sculpting. We truly enjoyed the experience. It is an impressive property.
We enjoyed a terrific guided tour of Chesterwood. Terry was incredibly knowledgeable about the artist, the times in which he lived and worked, and the property at Chesterwood. Our time was very well spent at this museum learning about the work of Daniel Chester Frenchs many works including the Lincoln Monument in Washington DC and the fountain at Dupont Circle in Washington, D.C. We enjoyed our tour a great deal and learned a lot.
This truly is a beautiful and serene historical home and studio to visit. It is a well-preserved Homestead of Daniel Chester French who was the sculptor best know for the Lincoln Memorial and The Minute Man. We took the guided tour and you learn such intricate details that might be overlooked on your own. Worthy of a stop if you enjoy history.
Very neat! Learned a lot abt Daniel French! The house is not on tour for 2 years as being restored but still worth the tour! Small walk in woods and sculptures to see. Beautiful views!
Incredible insight into his sculptural process and beautiful setting.
Very nice tour of the sculptures
Very nice statues, beautiful grounds nice tour.
wonderful guided tour added to the visit!
Some art museaum and sght seeing adventure .Check out the websites for more details.
Brilliant collection of plaster works by the Daniep Chester French
Very interesting. They are working on renovation of the house as of our visit. We could only see the main level. Beautiful setting. Interesting history.
Nice little walk with some good art. The kids went on a little hint for the sculptures, which made them enjoy it a lot more.
The tour was wonderful. Beautiful museum. Learned so much about sculpting and Chester French.
Beautiful and interesting showpiece. Definitely worth a visit in any weather.
Cant wait to see what the new sculpture exhibit is going to be, looks like its quite the setup 😁🌳
Nice trails , and landscape , some interesting sculptures
If you love art and architecture, see this. Wonderful guides - I recommend taking the tour. Beautiful setting and gardens, too. If you use Google maps to find it, make certain you pull up the address in Stockbridge (there are 2 places worth the same street address in Massachusetts).
Had to see the gardens where Isadora Duncan once danced
Lots to see and hear the lecturer was very good and the statues and scenery were exceptional
I love the walking trail and the hike to the ledges was worth it. Chesterwood is so tranquil and pretty.
I can only speak for the grounds, as the buildings werent open when we visited summer of 2020. But it is a beautiful place, impeccably maintained, and the landscape is gorgeous (as is most of Berkshire County). The trails through the grounds are very pretty, and have some interesting exhibitions themselves. We are looking forward to going back, when we can enter the buildings at some point in the future. But even as a tour of the grounds, it was well worth it.One can very easily see how the artist was inspired by his surroundings.
Current art is only in the woods, and most pieces are too similar for my taste. Had been here before and had a much nicer viewing experience then.
Relaxing ground with nice views of the surrounding Berkshire hills. Unable to enter buildings due to COVID-19 restrictions, but enjoyed picnicking on the grounds in the cool shade of the Pergola beside the gardens. A short steep hike up the Ledges Trail afterward was an unexpected treat. Enjoyed the wood sculptures along the lower woodlands trail.
A wonderful insight into the life and times of the preeminent American sculptor Daniel Chester French. Phenomenal.
This place is really unique. The staff here is very friendly and knowledgeable
Very interesting place full of some wonderful history. The guide we had was also very knowledgeable and entertaining.
Another Free Fun Friday 2019. Perfect day for a visit to see where the Lincoln Memorial and Minute Man were created.
Beautiful historical property. Cant wait to come back and explore more!
The history, the back ground, design details, the work involved, several scale models, the equipment involved the house and the studio are a wonderful learning and entertaining experience. Time well spent.
Fantastic house in a beautiful setting. Docents could have been a little more informed but we certainly enjoyed ourselves.
Walking through the woods is so relaxing, and having these great works of art scattered through out, almost like an Easter hunt. They complement natures beauty, making this a wonderful experience.
i really enjoyed the chesterwood. seeing the plaster castings and how Daniel Chester French created his sculptures and worked in his studio was very interesting. 3 of the castings youll will see is the Abraham Lincoln Memorial that is in Washington, DC, the George Washington Memorial that is in Paris, France (even tho Daniel was never in Parisand Our Lady Of Columbia (Americas Unofficial symbol of Liberty. yes before the Statue of Liberty). the French house was gorgeous and has many original pieces and some of the room Daniel would recognize if he would walk into them today. i only was able to see the first floor but they do open the second floor in occasions. the tour guide was a pleasure to talk with and didt rush you through the tour and was happy to answer all questions. if you are planing to do some site seeing around here they do offer a discount packages for the Chesterwood, The Mount, Norman Rockwell and i believe the Ventfort Hall was on the list too. there was at least 4 historical landmarks you could get a discount. i went to The Mount First and they didnt mention it so you might want to start from the Chesterwood first.
LOVED Chesterwood Museum! Chesterwood is tucked in a bit, off the beaten path but worth the trip. There are some beautiful sculptures there that are only partially finished and can be seen only at Chesterwood. And, of course, learn of the construction of the Lincoln Memorial.
We limited our visit to a grounds pass. Lovely garden, nice easy walk on the nature path, interesting sculpture exhibit. Friendly, accommodative receptionist.
This is one of the finest cultural attractions in the Berkshires. Gorgeous grounds surround the home and studio of Americas premier sculptor, including an informative visitors center and museum filled with fascinating displays, plus original works of art. Not to be missed when visiting the area, it is educational, uplifting and inspiring. Daniel Chester French was an amazing man, and Chesterwood exemplifies this fact in so many ways.
Daniel Chester Frenchs beautiful House, Studio and Garden where he created some of the most important statues celebrating American heroes.
The studio was very interesting, filled with sculptures and the grounds were beautiful.
Gotgeous setting, grounds and history. Studio is fantastic and we loved the modern sculptures too. Worth the price and the visit.
Chesterwood is located on one of the most beautiful properties in the Berkshires. Im a photographer who lives just down the road and Im fortunate enough to be able to photograph several weddings and other events there every year. Wedding ceremonies are held right behind Daniel Chester Frenchs studio, at the end of the most gorgeous row of hydrangeas. Cocktails are usually in the courtyard behind the studio or next to the main house with the most extraordinary views of the Berkshire Hills. If you are a guest for a wedding, I definitely recommend showing up a little bit early so you can take a hike and look at all of the sculptures in the forest and to visit the studio.
Wonder place with fantastic views and art
I went to a wedding on the grounds and it was just beautiful. It was well maintained and at a perfect location
Really nice place. Beautiful grounds and very interesting museum.
Do NOT waste $18 for an admission if you are interested in viewing great French sculpture, as there is little to see. The so-called "Museum" has few (no?full scale originals or reproductions, high-quality photographs, or even a list of places where you can view over 100 public works that French completed. Strictly plaster casts in the studios with little real insight. The house rooms are poorly interpreted. The garden does not contain any works by the master or his contemporaries. Feeling thoroughly ripped off.
If you have seen the Lincoln Memorial, this was the studio and home of the designer. Well maintained country home and exhibit. $18 entry fee at the time of this note. 5 minutes drive from town center.
Every year they host a contemporary art exhibit. This year there was a glass theme. There is something special about seeing art in a natural setting like the woodland path.
I liked almost everything in the house, wall paper, picture frames, light fixture, narrow beds... I loved the very tall studio with interesting small pieces of works like hands. The garden was well designed by Daniel. Also you can enjoy walk through the forest at the end of the garden. The guide was excellent with good knowledge.
