Roman Amphitheatre, Little St John St, Chester CH1 1RE, Leek
Free entry to ruins of Britain's largest Roman amphitheatre, with military re-enactments in summer.
Great view. Highly educative and fascinating
Underwhelming, given its previous size and significance.
Chesters amphitheatre is the biggest known in Britain. It may have appeared in the third century.7,000 spectators could have been seated in its structure, being considered one of the predominant symbols of Roman Empires supremacy. It was positioned on the edge of the Roman site because events which challenged the contrast between civil order and anarchy dwelled in It.
Free to visit. Close to city centre, be prepared to go up qnd down stairs as there is no ramp.
Amazing to look at and to think it was built over 2000 years ago.
I’m sure it would have been more impressive in it’s original state, i was a bit disappointed with the reality. They do have information signs with what it would have looked like. It doesn’t take much, if any, time to look about.
Realy enjoyed looking at the amphitheatre and roman gardens. Nice and easy for wheelchair access to.
Brilliant sight into the past. Absolutely wonderful place
Nice to visit early in the morning so to have the place to yourself, helps the imagination
Pity most of it has been built over but what is left to see is interesting.
Nothing to get excited about! I have seen far superior Amplitheatres in the UK but its ok for browsing if you happen to be walking past. I certainly wouldnt plan a walk to see it though 😂
Highly recommended to all you must visit chester amazing places to stay and visit.
Once a Roman amphitheater, you can still see grouting in some of the stones.
Pretty good, but theres not much left, so its largely up to your imagination!
Getting to stand where e probably thousands lost their life and imagine what it must have felt like. Great detail on the information displays, its older than a lot of countries, whats not to like??
Very good to see, information board was informative as tò what happens there
Lovely place to visit of historical interest.
An interesting place to visit if you are in Chester. It is free to visit and has lots of information boards.
You just walk in and view what’s around. Not much there and more to do in the town of Chester it’s self but is good for a quick trip
Live within a few miles of Chester so not the first visit. A local school having a tour when we arrived today. A little oasis in the city. Plenty of information on the boards for those wanting information.
Great place to visit with a gladiator! Great interactive visit for school visit. Linked with our visit at Grosvenor Museum, the children loved their gladiator costumes, but complained the shields were heavy! Of course there was a fight - gladiators against staff who were the barbarians! Good time had by all 😁👍
Excellent place to visit no waiting lovely day sat on the grass verge took in the views top class city
Historical site where the Roman amphitheatre use to sit. Approximately half of the original amphitheatre area is still visible but it is worth noting that the vast majority of stone, etc that is in place is replica. Still an interesting visit and you can still vaguely picture how it would have looked. Free to visit and roam around.
Big open space to enjoy and relax . You can even have a picnic as well
Chester is a lovely place to visit so much history you can see some of the amphitheatre also black and white buildings like tuder all about romans saxins Normans x
Not much is left of the Amphitheatre now. Most of of it was dismantled long ago and the stone was used to make other buildings. Half of the arena is still there, it was obviously used for gladiator battles, beast battles and public executions.
Good place to visit and learn about the interesting Roman history.
Slightly disappointed. Lots of replica walls etc. Obviously a historic site, and still worth visiting. Free entry
Bit underwhelming to be honest but its free!
Great history round every corner in Chester
If your into your history this is defo worth popping by to see! Its free and theres information in the boards around it.Enjoy
Anything to do with Roman history I’m there, and Chester has plenty of it. Go. You won’t be disappointed.
The Roman Amphitheatre and Roman Gardens of Chester are fantastic examples of the influences of Rome on this ancient walled city which is rightfully famous for its Roman roots. It was found during excavations in 1999 to be the largest such Roman site to have been discovered in Britain and dates from the 1st century when the Roman fort of Deva Victrix was established. Under the management, English Heritage, the site is listed as a Grade I listing. This roman training facility, as well as cockfights, bull-baiting, combat sports such as wrestling and boxing, and gladiator games, was in constant use during the Roman occupation until it was abandoned around 350 AD.My mind ran riot thinking about the Roman history involved with this site. I have been to Rome and loved the historic sites there and this Roman site in Chester is just so good and well maintained. The site is free and open to the public. Check out the board for more information. Perfect for combining with a walk along the walls.Standing in the middle and using your imagination allows you to experience a very atmospheric place. It takes a lot of imagination to make sense of the ruins that remain. If youre planning to travel to Chester, its certainly worth checking out.Chester is a place steeped in history, so its well worth seeing. The area is free to wander around, but as far as I can see, there isnt much to see.
A Good realistic challenge to walk the whole circular route around the city walls
2-minutes walk from the main shopping area very nice place to sit have a bit of lunch on a nice day and let the mind wonder
Nice to go to the park in the hot summer River Dee lovely 🌅 DS
There is not too much to see of the actual amphitheater but the site is interesting and the few areas of the original structure are authentic. If youre lucky you may see a fully costumes Roman soldier giving a tour or drilling a school party.
Chester is a lovly city to explore. with lots of nooks n crannys & black n white buildings. the 2 cathedrals. !!! & of course its wall. !!
Relaxing place to sit and/or explore with or without kids. It definitely gets their imagination going.Take time to read the info boards etc and take in just how incredible it is that it still exists after all this time.
Amazing place, peacefulFull of history
Not the best preserved as most of the stone was taken during the middle ages but you can still see the shape and the original timber that is in the ground
Must visit if youre in Chester and enjoy history. It is the remnant of the largest amphitheatre in Britain. Very well excavated and demonstrated. It is not the Colosseum but you get an idea of how it functioned. The descriptions are good. There are usually groups of school children who enjoy enacting the Roman gladiators usually guided by a Museum staff.
Its a pity that they have not reconstructed part of the amphitheatre to give children an idea of how it looked. Its hard for kids to imagine just looking at "a pit". Some AV and further explanation would have been nice too.
Very interesting, lots of roman facts good for all ages. In the heart of Chesters shops. Lots of places for food and drink for every taste
Had a walk past here there were school kids there learning about being a Roman soldier. There was also steps and other items of stone with labels to read of what they were so worth a look around.
Interesting in and of itself but little there to make this the sole reason to visit Chester. You can change this review to 5 stars if you count it as a nice place for a rest stop when walking around the citys sights. Close proximity to the river, the Roman Gardens and parts of the wall. Frequent visits by school classes with a Roman Centurion guide can mean youll often catch a bit of free entertainment if you stop here for a picnic on a sunny day.
Worth a visit if youre in the area. Wow, what an attraction this could have been if it weathered better. 15,000 people stuffed inside cheering, would have been incredible.
Great afternoon with the family at the Viking Market ran by volunteers in Viking character. Kids had fun taking part in re-inactment battles, handmade crafts available & interesting explanations about how life would have been for Vikings in Chester during the 10th Century. Visiting every 2nd Saturday of the month through to August.
History, right there in the heart of Chester. Beautiful place. Isnt very tricky to get there. Free. Roman gardens on one side, St. John Church on other and very close to Grosvenor park and groves - another very very beautiful site. History is well explained if you take time to read all the history plaques in the amphitheatre and the Roman gardens.
The Roman Soldiers are great. The ruins are interesting and the walk from the ruins leads you to the River Dee. The Roman walls are approximately 2 miles of amazing sights around Chester.
