14th-century castle ruins perched on a craggy outcrop, with panoramic views from its tower terrace.
Ruins of Castle on hilltop. Great views of surrounding countryside.
One of the sons of Carcassonne
Great views and a beautiful building
Amazing views, reasonably priced. Good gift shop at ticket office. Bit of a steep path, not possible to access if you are in a wheelchair. Breathtaking castle, very dramatic landscape. Really worth visiting.
Stunning scenery which will take your breath away. Quite a drive up a winding and sometimes narrow road. It was 36c on the day we went so the walk from the car park to the castle was pretty tough. However a beautiful and historic location which is well worth a visit.
Beautifull castle, a bit of a tough ride and walk to get to but definetly worth it for the view. Do be careful on windy days!
Amazing views
Very interesting site with a lot of on site information and spectacular views. With the admission you can also get a free documentary viewing in Cucugnan.
Not something too much special for me, the only thing that i liked really is that the castle is original and not renovated etc. Only the view worth the 7,5€.
It’s lit.
Incredible views. Watch out on a windy day though!
Amazing how they built this. Castle itself is quite small but the views of it and from it are amazing. Definitely worth a visit
Fantastic views, history lesson of the Château also
Very impressive. Best to go up on a clear day, but also one with little wind as youve little protection at the top.
Majestic ,incredible Palace
A breath-taking view compiled with a restored-ish castle in the South of France, and within 30 mins of two other castles, a few cute touristy towns. Amenities are decent, food and drinks are available in the shack, restrooms are relatively clean considering the amount of people that visit daily. One downside is that the entrance is not free, but its worth every penny!
You go for the view and the road towards the old castle. On your return you will check if you still can see it and realise how a unique viewpoint it was and is
One of the finest of the Cathar Castles in the Aude region of southern France. Every one of these an extraordinary achievement and, even now magnificent to see. A Tour of all the Cathar Castles is highly recommended.
We did the walk from the town- hard going up on the red route but worth it - disappointing was the price to go up to the castle once we got there . I would guess most of the money goes to maintaining the shop and salaries and nothing for the castle itself
Well worth the hike to the top - on a clear day you can enjoy the Pyrenees in one direction and the Mediterranean to the other. Its breezy up there
Excellent!!! you need 1Hs to 1:30hs to visit. You need to hill 15 minutes stairs. Free toilets at base. 7.5 Euro adults.
Gorgeous views, hard walk/hike. Very enjoyable.
The castle was enchanting, the views were wonderful. Easy access, easy free parking reasonable admission fees, good for a picnic
Spectacular views over amazing countryside. A short, 10 minute hike takes you to the fort. Easy to see how this spot was an easily defended outpost. You can see for miles and the cliffs make getting up to here without being seen (and killedimpossible. Great site to visit to understand the architecture of a defensive post.
Castle in the sky. The climb has lots of steps. Some of the climb is in the open so it can be hot in the sun. Not for folk who are afraid of heights. Spectacular views.
Spectacular views. The castle is smaller than you might expect
Stunning Ruin of Chateau. Heck of a drive to get up there. Fairly steep but smooth climb to the outside of chateau. Then its bit of a rock scramble over worn and sometimes slippery rocks/slabs. There are ropes to help on some bits. The views are stunning.
Wow what a view. Climb on a good day its not for the faint hearted.
We did not drive to the the top , me and my friend did a 4 hr tough walk and scramble to get to the top of the French Fort
Simply stunning and mind-blowing. Be sure to read the history of the region as well tickets to go up to the castle are 7.50€ and well worth it. Its a very short walk to the vale from the parking area where youll buy the tickets to enter. Well worth it!
Great experience. If you struggle with heights you may find this chalanging
Not a bad climb, views are fantastic!
The "Cathare" castle with the most beautiful architectural remains. View is awesome. Very romantic
Really amazing location, the drive up is awesome and the walk around the castle is great. You get some incredible views from the top!
Great experience, stunning views from incredibly high vantage point. Castle is mainly ruins but has some intact interiors. Steep climb from car park but very well worth it!
If youre in the area an can stand the 10-30 minute hike uphill (depending on age and conditionthe views and history are amazing. A week preserved Cathar castle perched on the highest point around for many kilometres. The views are amazing. Hard to imagine dragging all those stones around up so high, and 600 years later its still standing tall. It is a cheap entrance with free toilets and parking. Bring water in the summer, is hot and dry. Overpriced vending machines sell water and soda and junk food.
A ruin which can be reach from the parking place. At these parking there are free toilets. An entrance fee is asked and it’s quit a walk up to reach it. Nice place. It is close by peyrepertuse. Another ruin. Visit them both in one day.
Superb example of a Cathar castle, cost about 22 Euro for two adults and two children! Great views and clime not too bad!
This is a great little, historical chateau, with amazing views of the Pyrenees. However, theres not much there and you need to know that before you go.Its not much of a castle. Theres a small keep and a short audio guide that talks about the history, but the view are the reason for the entrance fee.Its not accessible to wheelchair or pushchair users, the path is steep and the spiral staircase to the keep is dark and could be difficult. If youre wanting spectacular views of the Pyrenees, this delivers. If youre wanting to spend time looking around a castle, this isnt for you.
Incredible location for a castle, views are spectacular. Well worth a visit, is a short hike up, but probably not a great idea if you don’t like heights!!
It was the easiest castle to climb. Well worth the effort for the views. You can see Peyrepertuse castle from here!
Beautiful ruined castle accessible either via a steep 1 1/4 hour hike from the nearby village of Cucugnan or a 10 minute drive.Wind speeds can be very, very strong at the castle as its 728 metres above sea level. Some of the castle walls are lower than waist height with sheer drops on the other side.Wear sensible clothing and be extremely careful when taking children or going with infirm people on windy days.
Very cool panorama on the valley.Be careful the site is windy. The castle is actually a ruin and there is nothing to buy which is very cool.
Thrilling climb to the top of the castle and gorgeous views.
Very nice castle to visit. Great views from the top, its only a 15 minute walk up. A bit far from cities so you probably need a private mean of transport to get there.
Great architecture, good brisk walk and great views
I recently visited the Chateau with my family and 18 month old boy.The surrounding countryside is very picturesque and the drive to the castle is a very pleasant one. There is ample parking, with mobile toilets located within easy walking distance. At the entry to the site is a small wooden hut where you pay to access the walk, and can also buy information pamphlets on the region. There is no food or drink for sale, which is a shame as there is no local amenities, so I would definitely recommend taking a packed lunch with you, as well as plenty of water. The walk to the castle, although relatively short, is quite challenging. It is totally unsuitable for prams or buggies, so take small children with you at your own risk. The site itself is certainly more ruins than castle, and we found the information that was supplied at the site to be inadequate. The views of the surrounding area were breathtaking, but the castle itself did not merit an entry fee or the precarious walk.I am glad we visited the region, and that we saw the castle. To be honest I think it is better seen from a distance..+
This is my favorite castle in the area. It sits very high (you have to hike up quite a bit from the parking so be warned if you have physical restrictionsand it has an amazing view of the surrounding area.
Definitely a must-see! Im really glad I was brought to this place. Make sure youre wearing warm clothes, its quite windy there.
Its a must see if youre in the area. Its so impressive how all this was built so long ago in such a difficult area. The views are breathtaking! Bring a hat and sunscreen!
