3426 Chateau Rd, Medora, ND 58645, United States, Williston
26-room summer home built in 1883 by a successful ranchman, with many original furnishings & tours.
Closed when we were there.
Our recommendation is to stop here before you do anything else in Medora! We very much enjoyed the history we learned by the self-guided tour enhanced by the volunteers.
Nice historical house with some interesting history. It’s a self guided tour with a couple workers who will answer questions if you have any.
Interesting, a slice of history about the wealthy and privileged class out of their element. Great home tour and the interpretive center was very informative.
Very interesting place to visit
We literally just left here and we enjoyed it so much that I had to leave a review right away. Staff is all very friendly and the history is definitely interesting. The Marquis did a fantastic job - even my teens enjoyed it! As my husband said, if all history was taught that way, people might enjoy it more and remember it better. And getting to sit outside on the gorgeous porch for that portion was great! I could have stayed on that porch with those views all day long! ❤️
Nice place to visit, the staff was very friendly, and the history is of course intriguing.
Very interesting! Loved touring the Chateau with my family. The kids were engaged and enjoyed it too.
Chateau de Mores State Historic Site is an excellent site. It is very well done and courteously interesting. The Marquis was a fascinating man and the whole story is entertaining. The site has costumed interpreters who really bring it to life. The one we saw was a CCC man who was very entertaining and had some good yarns.A visit here is worth every penny.
Interesting was not aware of the history.Recommend reading more for the other side of him.
Nice place
Its worth a stop if youre in Medora.
Interested in knowing how much the Tiffany and Co. Coffee pot cost. :)
This is a really neat place to visit. The small museum gives alot of information about the owner and life they lived. Then take a short drive or stroll up to the chateau to see the original homestead and a lot of their original items they used.
Interesting historical site.
An old house with much history I loved touring it and learning about cattle raising in the 1800s
Very interesting. Great historical info.
my boyfriend and i were excited to visit this place but we were not aware they stopped selling tickets at 4 PM (we arrived at around 4:20 and it was empty). the old lady at the front desk was extremely rude- we won’t try going back.
Really nice interpretive center. The chateau is closed in the winter.
Fun and educational place to visit, also has a gift shop.
Such a Romantic story of a Frenchman and is love. This museum and historical home embodied it fabulously.
Loved the tour. Plus they had a vet talking loved hearing how it was in the 1930
Worth visiting however the adoration of the family seems to weigh more heavily than the full story. A more objective account would be very interesting. More details about the lives of the servants, the locals, day-to-day life at the “chateau,” and a more true picture of the Marquis would be nice. Also a guided tour might be better, it was hard to hear everything on the porch.
Good museum and good exhibit about the CCC and the WPA in North Dakota.
Impressed with historical actors and interpretation of the period. A great way to engage the audience! The home tour was enlightening as we walked through approximately 26 rooms! I enjoyed getting to know Medora and her family.
It was really fun to see all the different rooms and how the family lived. Beautiful and peaceful.
Exploring the Chateau and visitor center is really quiet entertaining, as well as informative. Learning about the origins of Medora, both initial success, and then disasters which followed, is fascinating. The experience also provides some insight into the servant - nobility complexities of the past.Young children may find the experience a little slow, however, families in general should find it very interesting. Admission for a vehicle (regardless of the number of occupantswas $30 at the time of this review.
Great site, well worth the entrance fee. Much of the Chateau is just as it was when the Marquis lived there. An awesome little piece of history, and the staff was extremely friendly and knowledgeable!
The Chateau is an important site historically for the western region of North Dakota. The staff is knowledgeable and super friendly. Great items in the gift shop! Make sure to take the tour during the summer season, and include a carriage ride. The Ethnic Christmas Buffet held each December is wonderful and showcases local Ukrainian foods.
The home of The Marquis de Mores and his Wife Medora, which he named the town after his bride. On weekends in the summer there is a History Alive program at 10:30, 1:30, & 3:30, on the porch of the Chateau, which is free but a ticket is needed to tour the Chateau. Get the story of how The town of Medora started.
Interesting to see history of Medora. A must see go every time Im in Medora discover something new every time. Friendly staff willing to help and explain history and answer any questions.
Informative history about the town of Medora, North Dakota
We had a beautiful visit; everybody was so knowledgeable, not only on the history of Chateau de Mores, the history of the town and state, as well.
The house has a lot of original items from the Mores family. The house and grounds are well maintained.
So much history and its a beautiful place. We loved going back in time and learning about the De Mores family.
Make sure you find the walking path and visit the old buildings down the hill! There is also an old root cellar which you can find tucked into one of the hills down there.
Visitor Center had very informative displays. It was just a short three block walk from The Visitor Center up to the beautiful home. Fascinating it has been maintained so well. The views were gorgeous!
Not huge, but unlike a lot of historic homes, you get to see all the rooms. Tour "guide", an elderly gentleman, was great, knew a lot and answered all our questions
Free shows on porch are excellent. If you like touring old historic houses its interesting.
I loved all of the personal items and simplicity of the house. The setting was beautiful and the restoration is beautifully done.
Amazing historical site, with astounding actual in-home items and photos. The authenticity is great and the added information creates a wonderful representation of the Marquee and his wife. You gotta see this!
The local historical society does a wonderful presentation and are excellent at answering all questions. Very much enjoyed the house and museum.
The interior of the house is rather disappointing given the exterior, the wealth of the family, and the era. Still, it is neat to see original and period artifacts.
Its nice to visit the first home of Medora and learn about the life of the one who built the town.Youll see some original items in the house and understand a bit more about the family life of the time.Well preserved and well presented. This is a quick tour but its worth it if you are in the area for a few days.
What a fantastic experience to be able to step back in time to the 1880s and visit the Marquis and Madame De Mores! The estate has been beautifully restored with a lot of the artifacts still pristine. This is a must do for anyone in the area whether youre interested in history or not. I had no idea this much history was here in ND!If you are lucky enough to get Donald to tell you about the Estate, you will be in for a treat. He is so knowledgeable on everything from that time period, and more. Very personable, nice, and helpful. No question will be left unanswered with Donald!
Very cool place to visit. If you love old history this is a place to visit
Beautiful special place. Very authentic and well preserved. Extremely knowledable guides. Highly revommended.
Would have given it a higher rating maybe even 5 stars if the Chateau was open as stated on the website; however only the gift shop/Interpretive Center is open October through May.
Had a great time vising this place, friendly and knowledgeable staff. Reasonably priced for all that you see. Most of the items are original from the time period which is neat to see. Highly recommend.
Love the museum. I find the house vary interesting. You can see how simple people lived back then.
