Charlie's MEXICAN RESTAURANT - Mexican restaurant in Anmore, Canada
Just drove by and saw paper in the windows. Did they close??!! I hope not
Sad to hear Charlie is retiring soon, but this food is really special. I get the fish tacos with homemade spicy salsa and I really enjoy it. Thank you.
its early afternoon, 3:30ish, no-one in the restaurant, old guy lets us in past the leash like fence so we headed for the window seat..BIG mistake. "no no no you cant sit there. Go there" He pointed to another table along the wall and we stated we would like to sit beside each other and look outside. "Absolutely not" He replied. So we left.......he was just plain rude
Unfriendly service. The owner looked unhappy and looks like I own him a million dollars.
We decided to eat here after long day and were quite hungry. But the food was so underwhelming, almost felt like we were eating a frozen meal. I decided to ignore the other reviews and try out this place, but I will not do that again.
Come to this restaurant for an honest and authentic interpretation of Mexican cuisine. Also come to meet Carlos. He is awesome. He knows food, he knows drinks, and he knows how to celebrate the food of Mexico. He pulls no punches, and wants you to leave full and happy.
Unfriendly service starting at the door. The apparent owner was unhappy and reluctant for our group of five. My bag was next to my seat, at the window and apparently in his way somehow. (???Another group comes in from the back door, seated and immediately served with water, tortillas and friendly chat. Meanwhile we had been seated for 10 minutes and offered nothing. We left after that. Why bother ruining a good evening?Regulars matter, but regulars became regulars somehow. Treat new customers as if you actually cared they took a chance on your restaurant.
Right from the beginning, received a cold reception. They refused us for a table of 5 and it was not even busy, but then begrudgingly sat us. Then proceeded to complain about one of our bags being in the way (which was NOT the case), then ignored us. Meanwhile sat another group after us, served them water and chips, while chatting them up before offering us anything. They succeeded in making us feel completely unwelcomed, so we left and went to Originals instead. What a difference. Leaving was the best decision ever!!!
Loved this Port Moody gem. The owners are the sole operators. They make amazing authentic Mexican food. We ate off the lunch menu and were so full by the time we left. I had pico de gallo with housemade chips followed by a chicken quesadilla. My partner shared the chips but also had tortilla soup followed by a beef burrito. I had a margaritas and he a Sol beer and our bill was only $55! I highly recommend the cuisine! Well be back!
I have been to this place couple times and finally, today I made myself to review about it. Basically it is about the old guy probably he own this restaurent but he is quite mean and rude. Doesnt know how to bahave with customers.Earlier, I thought he might be having bad way but now, when this happened again, I decided to share it.The food was good but not impressed from that guy.
We LOVE this restaurant! We often order from here on Skipthedishes and its always amazing, tastes incredible, and feels authentic. This evening we ordered for pick-up on our way home, and had the chance to actually stop inside the restaurant, it was very cute and reminded me of an authentic Mexican restaurant. I believe it was the owner who I chatted with when I came in, and he was very friendly and attentive- he encouraged us to visit sometime to actually dine in so we could enjoy the food straight from the kitchen to the table, and we look forward to visiting with our family. The whole experience just warmed my heart! Love Charlies!
Doesnt look like much from the outside but dont let that fool you. Very charming inside and very Mexican in style and decor. Tables and chairs Im sure were imported from Mexico..or at least great copies of what youd find in Mexico. Stopped by for lunch the other day and was pleasantly surprised. A friendly greeting from the owner..Covid procedures in place and a nice table by the window. Ordered a couple of margaritas and from the lunch menu, the two of us shared the nachos, (smaller portion). They were Really good..on home made chips and all the condiments. I had the Tostada which was great and my Mrs had the Chrispy Taco which she enjoyed as much. I would say it was one of the best Mexican meals weve had in and about the area. When once we couldnt find a good Mexican restaurant, weve since found a couple..and this, Charlies, being one of them. We plan on bringing our friends here in the near future... You have to pay a visit. You wont be disappointed.
For the price they charge you think the food would be better. The only thing edible with our meal was the rice. They ignored requests not to have items on the taco, my kids still came with olives, and the hard shella came broken. The stuffed Jalapeños were tiny and definitely not worth the money.
Charlie was so nice when we were there! The food is so delicious, tastes really fresh and filling. Super reasonable prices too, highly recommend!
Just happened to come across this quaint restaurant in Port Moody and so glad that we did. The service was excellent, food fantastic and price was very reasonable ~ great value. So happy to be able to support a local restaurant owner and wife. We will be back ~ by far our favorite Mexican Restaurant!!PS Excellent freshly made margaritas!!!
We were celebrating our Anniversary, and decided to go camping. I asked Charlie to package our food in a way, that would keep it warm ( foil). Charlie spoke to his lovely chef wife, and believe it or not our food was still warm three hours later when we arrived at Rolley lake. Thank you so much for the warm, delicious food!.You made our anniversary very special!! Mark & Renee
Love the food and have been ordering for a while. Order about once every month. The last two times we ordered we noticed some changes in packaging and the quesadillas which we always get have more cheese than before. Also Isabella usually signs the packaging and adds a drawing. Has the management changed?
TL;DR: READING THIS REVIEW, WONDERING IF YOU SHOULD ORDER THIS ON SKIP/DOORDASH? Save your $$. In the mood for Mexican close by? Originals down the street, Si Senior Taqueria Fiesta Mexicana, and Politos Latin Café in Port Coquitlam all have you covered. All around the same price range, but more flavourful, better service, AND more authentic. With the unfortunate news of many great restaurants closing permanently due to COVID, it would be a deep betrayal to the local culinary scene if a restaurant as horrible as Charlies is left standing by the end of the pandemic. If there is one restaurant in Port Moody most deserving of this years purge, its CharliesAnyone who has left a review raving about the authenticity of the Mexican food here could probably also be convinced a TacoBell Crunchwrap Supreme is a Guadelajara delicacy. However, disregarding its authenticity, the food here is bland, overly greasy, poorly prepared, and not fresh.Ah, but youve seen one or two great reviews about what an honest man the owner, Charlie is. Perhaps a little rough around the edges. Those reviews one can only assume are again, from the Crunchwrap folk with their durexd tongues. Listen to the majority. What Charlies food lacks in quality and authenticity, Charlies service makes up for in its rudeness. As previous reviews have stated, Charlie (the owner), is rude, bitter, and arrogant. If there are a couple of reviews reflecting this, its safe to say those encounters were probably anomalies. DECADES of reviews on the other hand? Come on.
This is a sorry excuse for a Mexican Restaurant. My chimichanga was over fried. The chips were burnt. The rice has peas, corn, and carrots in it like it was in the frozen isle in the grocery store. The quality of the ingredients are mediocre at very best. I couldn’t have been more disappointed in my choice for dinner tonight. Would not recommend to my worst enemy.
I was walking by when I spotted this place so I thought Id have a look at the menu as it was almost dinner time. I am so glad I did. They made my meal from scratch so I sat on the lawn out front while I waited. I ordered the marisacada. It is easily 3 meals for me and loaded with seafood, so yay for the food tracking on high protein and moderate carbs. Its also nice to support a local, family-owned business.
Charlie and Isabella never cease to please. Their food is always amazing, fresh and wonderful. Theyre always welcoming, the atmosphere for dine in is cozy and even now with having to do take out the quality is still amazing. Highly recommend to anyone.
Experienced take out, will definitely be back when they can offer dine in service. Charlie and his wife are friendly, and the food is great. A true mom and pop hem of Port Moody. Support local.
Great COVID-19 protocol! Felt really safe when picking up.We ordered take out and brought it home to enjoy. The enchiladas were awesome! Highly recommend.
Delicious and authentic Mexican food! Growing up I used to go to a similar restaurant that was across the street called Carlos and Charlie’s, and when it shut down I was so sad. Then when Charlie’s opened up, I was so glad that I could still get amazing Mexican food. I love the margaritas there, and the chicken quesadillas is my favourite. I’ll either order from skip the dishes at my mums house, or I’ll come in whenever I’m in Port Moody. The owners are always super nice to me and my friends. Thank you Charlie!
We have visited several times now and we absolutely love the food at Charlies. We find the selection excellent and authentic. Most of all, its delicious! Our server was wonderful and kind - joking with me while I asked some questions. While service was friendly, we did find it was somewhat slow. We noticed that there were several delivery services (skip the dishes, door dash etc.picking up orders while we were there and I worry that the volume of take out (at least 6 or 7 in the time we were there!affected the promptness of our meal. I have zero doubt that the services are lucrative for the restaurants, but I feel that in-restaurant customers should receive priority service. That being said, we will 100% return to Charlies - we love the food and the friendliness :)
Authentic and delicious Mexican food. The owners are a lovely couple, and when not busy are lovely to talk to. Great place for take-out. The tortilla soup is amazing. Very clean facilities and a modest but well-run kitchen. Cozy inside, with Mexican decor. This mom and pop restaurant has been a part of Port Moody for nearly 30 years. Great place for a date, small group, or family meal.
I love this place! The food is amazing! It is run by a couple who have been doing this for years! Charlie is funny and Isabel knows how to cook! They get quite busy around dinner time especially with Skip the Dishes app. So you might find yourself waiting a bit longer for the food. But it is worth it!
Many people write bad reviews to punish the establishment, but I write them to truly help them and hope they take my advice:The Good:1They play Mexican Music and that is a plus if you are selling Mexican Food. I want to feel like I am walking into Mexico.2The Beverages Selection is good and the Mexican beer is cold. The Bad:1The details are missed and this is not encouraging to a customer who wants to trust the kitchen. The small menu on the table and the door menu have two different prices (see desserts), the salt and pepper on the tables are all but empty, lights bulbs are out, does not serve water on the table when you enter.2The Owner is on the rough side. I understand why other reviews say he is a grumpy owner. My opinion is that he needs to stay in the kitchen. Dont hire a dish washer, higher a young hostess/waitress who can greet and entertain the guests. You need to be overly friendly.3Food is okay, but needs to be up-dated and work on presentation. Use a mold to give shape to the rice, serve the refried beans in a small, broil the cheese longer. The Ugly1The Ugly is what I feel will happen to this location if Charlie does not take his business seriously. There is another Mexican restaurant a few blocks away that is much more aggressive and progressive. Charlie needs to step up his game. Charlies, look at week days specials. The Mexican independence is on September 15th, what have you planned for it? What about live music? Remember, whey you run a restaurant, food is only part of the experience... you need to give people a reason to come back. Dont forget service, friendliness, visuals and details.I wish you well in your future for what ever direction you decide to take.
Very rude owner and most of the food is disgusting. We came there very recently and ordered $50 worth of food and only the refried beans tasted good. We had tacos, quesadilla and entire share plate as well. The food was extremely bland especially the rice. There were lima beans and old tasting beans in the rice. And there were so black olives in the burrito and on the share plate that it was incredibly salty and way too overpowering. I have no idea why lima beans, peas and a ton of black olives are in this type of food anyway
Bad food, poor service, grumpy old owner. The owner makes you feel like hes doing you a favor by serving you for his marginal cuisine. The only thing that Charlies does half decent is nachos. I wont waste time here again, and I wouldnt recommend you waste your time here either. Open your own can of re-fried beans at home and it will taste better. A recommendation to the owner would be to hire another employee for $8 an hour, maybe then youll be able to provide decent service instead of trash service.
Probably been coming here for 20 years. All I ever want out of a chimichanga is for it to be crispy and full of beans, cheese, and chicken. Charlies is my favourite, worldwide. I always leave full but not quite stuffed. Great value for a sit down / warm atmosphere kind of dinner.
Ordered take out. Ordered fajitas chicken and beef. Very disappointed in the food. The food literally had no spices and was dry. In addition, the fajitas were extremely plain: onion, tomato, green pepper (no spices). Ultimately, it is a meal I could have made at home very easily and it would have tasted much better. Also, it would have been cheaper to make myself. All in all i was excited to try Charlies but was left extremely disappointed. Unfortunately, wont be going back.
Taco salad was dry and bland as there was no dressing, salsa or spice on it. Owner seemed offended when dressing was requested. He explained this type of salad doesnt come with dressing. Ive eaten enough taco salads at other Mexican restaurants to know better.Had to request water twice. We just came in from a hike and placed a 1/2 small bottle of water on the table. The owner pointed out that we already had water in the bottle. They did not offer to fill the glass when it was empty. The owners personality is not suitable to keep his business going. He had a female staff member kill a large spider on the wall instead of doing it himself. She gave him a disgusted look. Will not go back nor recommend this establishment.
Went to Charlies because I wanted to have Mexican and My friend recommended this place. Its a cute little Mexican restaurant in Port Moody. The waiter Charlie is quite the character. He has that dry kind of humour, but hes quite genuine "what you see is what you get." Regardless I dont judge a restaurant by the service .. Its the food I judge. The food speaks for itself, we loved the rice and the refried beans that comes as a side with the burrito. We shared everything. The little tacos were very nice, light and quite authentic. We had the pork carnitas, and vegetarian one. We both enjoyed the soft corn flour tortilla. The stuffed jalapeno peppers were quite spicy. I was surprised to see carrots and peas in the Mexican rice and in the stuffed peppers. The servings are huge and generous and prices are very affordable.I recommend sharing. Then ordering one at a time cause youll get full.
The food was good but the soft tacos were slightly burnt. The trio plate with the soft taco, hard taco and burrito was quite delicious. The service when we arrived however, was almost non existent. We had to ask for beverages.
Walked in and should have walked out. Service came with a dash off attitude. Ordered a virgin Caesar and asked for a larger size and it wasnt possible also tastedmlike watered down clam juice? Ordered an appy and my mom had to ask if it was even coming out as an appy? Considering walking out but Im too hungry. But A&W across the street seems like a good choice. Dont invest the experience to this spot.
Waited 50 minutes for dinner in the freezing cold restaurant with our jackets on. The table behind us was cold as well because they put their scarves back on. And when I mentioned dinner was taking a long time, he asked me if I was counting. The food came on ice cold plates and got cold very quickly. He told me that my seafood dish took longer to make, I guess thats why some of the seafood was overcooked but the imatation crab is already cooked, right? What he should have done, was just apologize for dinner taking so long and just bring us a little bowl of chips or something.Pricey for only ok food and service with attitude.
This is some of thee best Mexican food Ive had in the lower mainland; really authentic. Our waiter seemed a bit grumpy; but he was the only one working so maybe he was tired. I will definitely be back because the food is so delicious and its a small business. There is only street parking.
Always an all-around great experience, even with a toddler in tow. Charlie is kind and lovely to talk with and entertains our young son every time! The food is something else- it’s authentic, with hearty portions and good quality ingredients.
One of my favourite restaurants. Some of the best Mexican food Ive ever had. Charlie is the server, who is extremely kind and warm, while his wife Isabelle is the cook, and makes the most fantastic food. Been coming here for over 15 years.
This is one of my favourite restaurants in Port Moody! What it lacks in fancy decor, it makes up for in great service and delicious food. The enchiladas are so delicious and authentic and the margaritas go down (a little tooeasily. We always come with our toddler daughter and theyre warm and welcoming to her. The kids menu is a little lacking, but theyve got French fries, so my daughter couldnt care less. I would highly recommend this family-friendly restaurant.
wow. not sure what we did but the waiter made us feel like we were constantly a burden literally the moment we spoke to him.It really over shadowed our experience of the food. We did mention 3 times when we ordered our kids meal we wanted cevechie but he didnt bring it and then said he didnt hear us...which I guess is possible...but it seemed like he didnt even want our order! So strange! We also asked for some extra salsa and it was as if that was a strange request to be giving??Food was good but not as flavorful as I was expecting... really wish I could have tried the cevechie its my favorite thing to order!....and sadly I wont return because I felt unwelcome. Im sure the waiter was the owner actually because nobody would hire a guy that treated people so poorly.
U gotta try the Grande Nacho Platter, its the perfect appetizer for 2-3 people. No hipster attitude! Honest service, family owned, huge selection, tasty food!
Good sized dinner portions but a bit expensive. The food tastes like authentic mexican food and did not wait long for it to arrive. The tamarind drink was a large, delicious drink and reasonably priced. Our server was very attentive and we were very happy with the overall experience. I will bring my family again in the near future.
This rating is based on my first time at this restaurant on a Friday evening, we ordered Fajitas. Firstly the service needs major improvement, I was calling in advance for reservations which absolutely not necessarily as the place seems dead. We requested a table at the window since place was almost empty, but we didnt get it , the excuse was that later the place will fill up, after we finish dinner the places was still not even half full. Secondly the food is so so , our meet was quite dry and the portions are small. Overall not a good experience, I would not recommend this place and will not go again. I hope the owner takes the time to read all other reviews and improve his service and food quality.
While its good Mexican food, the portions are small (excluding the refried beans and riceand you pay a fairly hefty cost. The staff are very pleasant but the waitress on our last two visits seems to have lacked training. She didnt know the items on the menu and had to keep asking other staff, we received no refills on any of our drinks throughout the visit and were sat uncomfortably at a table not big enough for our group when there were other tables available. In addition, i requested cutlery for one of the desserts to which the owner jokingly said to use my hands. I figured, its a joke, fine.. my cutlery will be coming shortly. I was wrong. If i prefer to use cutlery for my food thats my choice, im paying for the meal. The least you could provide is cutlery.Overall, if you REALLY want Mexican food you will get a good representation here but i would spend my hard earned money somewhere the plate wasnt filled with cheap filler and the service was up to par.
Really cute place. we were the last table of the night and had great service....and Im really picky. Charlie stopped by for a couple visits which was sweet. The food was really good. I had the Mexican for 1 and I ate about half cause the portion was so big but had a tough time stopping because it was really tasty. AND its his wife cooking the food! gotta support the family businesses. we will definitely be going back!
Yummy!!! Food tastes home made, really fresh and authentic. They have been in business for over 30 years - restaurants dont last that long unless they are doing something right!I recommend this place to anyone who likes Mexican food. Not overpriced, but I would say average price, although the food is much better than average.Give yourself a treat and go there today or tonight!
Its not easy to find high quality Mexican food in the Vancouver area, but Charlies is FANTASTIC! The food is very good. The restaurant is very small, only 10 tables or so, and the decor/atmosphere leave a little to be desired. BUT, the food makes up for it and the service is great. Charlie is always around to make sure everyone is okay. I have eaten here many times and brought friends here too. I highly recommend it.
My craving for Mexican food unsatisfied by Taco Time, I took the family to Charlies (or is it Carlos?for dinner the other night. I was thoroughly disappointed. Our waitress only showed up at our table to take orders and deliver meals, we had to flag down other staff to put in orders for drinks, ask for replacements for dropped cutlery, order dessert, and get our bill.My margarita, which I requested to be "classic, on the rocks" was too sweet, and came on crushed ice.The portions were generous, but the taste and presentation was disappointing. I was hoping for the standard red beans, but they only have re-fried beans. I asked for my food to be medium spicy, but honestly didnt detect anything in the way of spiciness in anything we had.The deep fried ice cream was an interesting combination of too frozen to cut and over-done. It being too-frozen appears to be a known issue as it was served with a serrated boning knife. The bill had a mystery item on it that we hadnt ordered; we had to wait for our waitress to be found to clear it up.Our ordeal lasted nearly two hours, and its not one Im in a hurry to repeat.
