Charleville Demesne, Tullamore, Co. Offaly, Ireland, Ros Comain
Early 19th-century fortress with turrets, towers and hand-carved stairways, plus its own ghosts.
A beautiful place. So privileged to get inside
Stunning castle. Unfortunately it was closed when we went but I still got amazing pictures.
Amazing place with amazing people! Samantha you are a great tour guide!
Absolutely wonderful! If you ask politely - you might just get a quick tour, otherwise they are closed at the moment.. Dont just go through the gates, they are closed for a reason!
Sad that the actual castle grounds arent accessible and taking photos of the amazing building thru Harris fencing isnt great but the walking trails are so beautiful.
Always a fabulous place to visit and Im lucky enough that its a 5 minute drive from me. Beautiful grounds, a great forest to venture into and some seriously picturesque views to photograph.
Lovely brief nature walk around this castle, fine oak trees lead up to a picturesque castle. Great for amateur photographers. Theres even a nice geocache on the ground. Not a lot to do there though unless an event is on
Definitely worth a visit. Amazing castle, that is not in the best shape, but very atmospheric. The tour is great and our guide Santiago was very knowledgeable. Highly recommend. P. S wear something warm, its damn cold inside
Well worth the visit. Loved learning the history of the castle and Santiago is a great tour guide. Found the castle by accident but you should definitely go and tour if In the area.
Yes this is open!!! We stopped by in February of 2020 and rang the doorbell. We had an awesome tour that was chock full of information about the property. The current owners are rehabing the property and the 8€ a person goes to that effort.
Fantastic Experience. Well worth a a visit if your in the area. Our guide (Santiagofrom Argentina was probably the best & most passionate guide Ive ever had. Full of knowledge & stories relating to the castle & surrounding areas. Loved it.
This castle was my favorite one that I visited during my trip. There is a tour available and I highly recommend going. It is amazing! Beautiful castle and grounds.
A beautiful Castle with great history in a wonderful woodland surrounding.
Really enjoyed the tour, great guide, some great stories.
The notice on the door gives a phone number to ring to arrange a tour but nobody answers. Its very run down and needs a lot of money spent on the grounds!
We had a wonderful tour! Although they are in the middle of reservations, the guided tour was fun and interesting on many levels! Its a shame that we couldnt visit the gardens, the upstairs and some other quarters, otherwise I would have given it 5 stars for sure.
A beautiful old castle and a wonderful park ,we very often went back there for a walk ,just so beautiful and very peaceful !
Castle and surrounding woods are beautiful. Couldnt join a tour though because there was only one guide at that time and he didnt respond to the door bell or telephone calls. Found out later he showed two women around for an extended tour... Therefore the last tour of the day (which we wanted to joinwas cancelled. Plan to visit early. The ancient Oak tree at the entrance is worth a visit too.
Fantastic building run by volunteers... Great tour with lots of interesting information.... Off the beaten tourist trail but worth taking time out to visit. Described as the finest Neo Gothic Castle in Ireland... Thankfully it has not been over restored and looks fantastic.....
I gave the higher rating as this could be a fantastic attraction. However it is very run down and desperately needs to be cleaned really well. I appreciate there is some restorations being done but cleaning it does not cost too much just hard work. I truly hope it can be restored to its original glory
Beautiful castle situated in a forested area. Beautiful surroundings. I love that the owners have not gone over the top with interior decorating in the castle. It feels like a more realistic setting. The woman who gave me the tour was very friendly. This is a nice stop on your travels if you have 30 minutes to and hours time.
Great castle and have seen many on our vacation. Lucked out and arrived right before a scheduled tour time and had a fascinating tour by a young French intern. Might be the highlight of our trip!
Absolutely amazing castle with some very interesting history! Got a tour with an intern who did a very good job despite him apologizing for his French accent, abosulty amazing inside and out and I hope the renovations are completed soon so we can come visit again and see the rest!
What glorious castle with all sorts of unique little details. I hope it will all be restored to its former glory once again. A lovely example of a castle style that is not typical in Ireland. Just beautiful well worth a visit.
Lovely place for a walk and I have to go back again for the tour it’s outstanding this castle and I only stumbled across it by accident
This place is breathtakingly beautiful and a hidden treasure. I would highly recommend a visit
Beautiful castle and park (caught the bluebells!). Amazed how much the volunteers working there put love and effort to keep it in a good condition. Had a wonderful tour!
Very interesting tour of an castle undergoing restoration. Privately owned and occupied with the tour bringing you to principle rooms and pointing out original features, quirky stories of occupants etc.Beautiful woodlands surrounding the castle which are free to walk around with children and dogs etc. Particularly beautiful in April / May with amazing bluebells. No toilets / cafe on the site though.
Construction work not advertised. Long hard drive to Castle from Gate to be confronted by security & possibly turned away. I was asked was I working & I answered YES, the truth, just not there. Still interesting to see building. Would like to revisit when works completed.Sneezer.
Great place to go for a walk, nice trails, safe for dogs and plenty to explore!
We walked in the avenue up to the Castle and its beautiful from outside. It holds many surprises both on route and inside the Castle. I wasnt inside today but I have been on a number of occasions.Wouldnt I love to have a few spare Euros to complete its restoration .
A beautiful castle!! I was amazed by this place as I had never even heard of it and it turned out to be one of the most beautiful and mysterious castles Ive ever been in. Ran by volunteers who are trying to restore it. Our tour guide was Joseph and he was extremely knowledgeable and answered any questions we had in depth. Probably the best tour guide Ive had in a castle to date... And Ive seen upwards of 70 Im the last 2 years. Definitely worth a visit. I will most definitely be returning in the summer months.
We had a really great tour guide who was able to answer all of our questions while providing a detailed history of the castle and its family. Would recommend any future visitors to wear warm shoes though, the only heating in the castle is through the fireplaces.
This castle is awesome! Our tour guide Joseph was genuine, knowledgeable and his passion for castle and its history amazing!!
Really stunning building, being lovingly conserved and restored. Well worth a visit.
Great place for the family lots of walking castle staff very helpful well worth a visit
Interesting castle, excellent guides (some form of Harry Potter hippie Commune shows you around), lots of details - especially if you are into the mystical ghost-stuff.Prices range between 8-10 euros per person (depends on group sizes etc.), but you (and your kidswont be disappointed.
Went here for the tour, which was wonderful and our guide was very fun to listen to! I definitely recommend this tour, the castle was amazing! Such a shame that so many original details were stolen back in the day, would have been very cool to see the original details of the castle!
Nice castle with very interesting guided tour.
Eerie place but fascinating. Do email them to reserve for tour. €8pp, min €20 per tour..about an hour long and very informative and interesting with historical insights and tales. Wait til you see the King Oak as you drive in! Leave extra time to walk the trail. I do believe the castle is haunted. Check out the "smudge" on the right of the staircase. Unedited! Discovered it when going through my pictures. I was freaked out!
This castle was such a cool, unexpected find on our drive from Belfast to Galway! A lot of it is currently being refinished so its not a big tourist attraction at the moment, which makes it even cooler to see. There was a really nice student from France doing an internship there and she gave us a great tour.
We barely managed to get in. The lady that does the tours was sick the day we went. I was able to track down one of the volunteer engineers, and he was kind enough to show us around. Although we didnt have the tour, he was very knowledgeable. Beautiful place to see. Definitely recommended if youre in Tullamore.
Brilliant tour of a really neat old building with an interesting history. Worth a visit even if you dont necessarily believe in the supernatural. Genuinely one of the best to Ive been on since I was a kid.
Castle beautiful, however bit neglected. But it all ads to historical feelings and the tour is good. A spooky place
What a great place! Beautiful castle and grounds, and a tour for 10 euros that goes toward hopefully helping preserve the rest of the castle! Tour guides know a lot and its full of surprises!!
Very cool medieval castle in the process of being restored. The tours are worth your time and the history is fascinating. It would have been cool to see some of the tunnels and hidden parts of the castle but those are not open to the public.
We had a fantastic tour here. Very much worth a stop. A spooky yet beautiful castle with some interesting history. Our tour guide was one of the volunteer artists and she was fun and a great guide.
This castle is amazing. It is hidden and was first hard to find. On my tour, it was rainy and there were no other tourists. A woman gave us a guide tour through it, which was great. Very spooky place. It is a haunted castle with a great history behind it. Apparently, it is also the filming location for the Reign series
Me and a friend ran into issues seeing another castle and randomly chose this one.Best. Decision. Ever. While it took us honking our horn a couple times for someone to come to the door, we got the "haunted" tour by a very friendly volunteer -- completely made our day. She had so much knowledge on the history, the one in the books and the haunted aspect, as well as secret passage ways and the rest. Definitely recommend it.
Beautiful place, and very friendly people! It has a great story. We were able to tour the main level but I really wish we would have been able to see the upper floors. They have a small fee for tours but I would have paid more to see more! The unrestored parts of the castle where what interested me the most.
