Char - Cantonese restaurant in Singapore, Singapore
Former Michelin starred restaurant. Had their Signature dishes, char siu (叉烧)and roast pork(烧肉). Both are excellent. I highly recommend the char siu. It is soft, with the right mix of pork fat and lean meat. Marinated, and served with a layer of dark, thick honey-infused sauce on top. Since COVID, business has dropped. Sunday lunch should be 100% table occupancy, but I would estimate 60% through the time I was there. No lines, no reservations needed!
Ordered 300g char siew, fried carrot cake and cold cucumber starter for 2 pax.The char siew was on the fatter side and sweeter because it was drenched in sauce. The flavour for the fried carrot was on point, but it would be even better if the carrot cake was crispier and less soft. The cold cucumber starter ($6was a huge disappointment, the cucumber was not crunchy and the black fungus was severely undercooked. When we made a feedback to the waitress, she did not show any interest to do a service recovery but made a passing statement informing that the dish was prepared through quick blanching. For a weekend dinner, the restaurant was surprisingly quiet with only 40% of the tables being occupied. The statement put out by the management requesting for diners to “BE CONSIDERATE” when using their in-house toilet also seem to show that the management’s passive stand towards diner’s experience.Go there for the speciality meat and the carrot cake but don’t expect service.
I sampled both their pork belly and cha siu. The cha siu was more than half fat, not edible. I complained to the waitress who tried to tell me thats what they tried for, a more fatty cha siu. Im from HK. I didnt accept that explanation. She gave me another portion which was more edible. Lost a star for even trying to fool me. The crispy pork belly was good, very tender. Skin was crispy.Other visits, Im not too accepting of beef used in stir fried dishes which have been marinated in baking soda. It expands the meat but the texture and flavor is like foam. For $16-18 per stir fry, I would expect more real meat and not this foamy meat. I also asked them to stir fry with less oil. There was about 1/4 cup of excess oil at the bottom of a black bean beef stir fry. Typical of cooks from China who equate using more oil with dunno, luxury. Stir fries in HK are dryer, with wok hei. Cant get wok hei if too much oil.Selection of tea for a HK style diner is disappointing too. Puer or Jasmine or chrysanthemum.Ill give Char another 1-2 tries. If not improved, there are other Canto places nearby which are authentic.
The both Char meats are abit cold when it is serve. Be honest is better when the shop was at Geylang few years ago. The is over price.
Came here for dinner on a late Sunday night around 8pm and the place was relatively empty. The food got served really quickly which is definitely a plus. The place was also sparkling clean.Overall, definitely above average zichar place. You can tell that all the dishes were well cooked. We liked all the dishes that was ordered and had nothing to complain about. The sambal xo fried rice was easily the favourite- well seasoned with some wokhei and the spice level was just right. The signature charsiew roast meat was good as well but definitely not mind blowing I feel. Will come back here again for a good zichar dinner!
Went with some expectations and left disappointed. Char Siew has at least 70% fat and the flavor lacking roast pork comes with rubbery skin which can be found anywhere selling for $4 a plate. The saving grace is perhaps the tofu dish and the tangy chili sauce provided. Service wise, it took a few big gestures to capture the crew’s attention when the shop is about 30%full. Worth a try only if you enjoy fatty Char Siew.
Fantastic food, service and clean toilet.Char Siew was half lean half fat which just melts in your mouth. Carrot cake had huge chunks of radish which I enjoyed. Everything else was delicious too. Definitely recommend to go and try!
One of the best char siew i’ve had in Singapore!Enjoyed their National Day Set Menu and the food arrived piping hot! Many thumbs up 👍🏼👍🏼
Youll never find bettwr char siew anywhere else. Ignore the less-than-best comments. Those are people who prefer a different style of char siew. The char siew here is on another level. No other char siew place can compare. Hence, people who just want something familiar to their "favourite" will not know how to enjoy this one to the fullest. This char siew is highly charred, sweet, and literally melt-in-the-mouth. Literally. No artificial colours I can tell. Just pork slowly cooked to tenderness and charred to absolute perfection. For those who say price is high: what do you expect? Hawker price for nice indoor environment AND the best char siew in the world?Mushroom side dish is good too.
The char siew was delightful with the right level of tenderness. It is coated with a sticky caramelized sauce that adds an extra dimension to the dish. You wont find any crispy bits on the char siew though - so those expecting the authentic Cantonese char siew might be a tad disappointed. Their other dishes were not as impressionable, but it was delicious nevertheless. Try to book a lunch or early dinner reservation instead - their other signature item, the roast pork, was sold out when I was there for a 6.45pm reservation.
Their Charsiew and Dry beef hor Fan are the "must order". I happened to dine 3 days before duan wu jie and they only left with nonya zhang so I bought 1 home. To my pleasant surprise, its very very good!!!! I regretted not buying more!!!! Food and service was great! You have to try yourself!
Overall 4/5Food quality is good, overall tasty. While as my personal preference to be more HK style char Siu, so I would vote for the imperial treasure/ paradise Char Siu instead of Char.Good to try!
Go for the char siew, sambal fried rice and roast duck. Roast pork is a no go cos skin not thick and crispy enough.
Had a good experience dining in Char earlier today. Ordered the double roast meat (Char Siew and Roast Pork), both tasted very delicious. Although i wish it came a bit hotter, as it came to our table quite cold already. What i especially loved about the food is how they paired the roast meat with mustard/wasabi sauce. It really cut through the fattiness of the meat so that you wont end up feeling "bloated" after the meal.Service was excellent, location was accessible.
This is one of those top-of-mind places when it comes to delicious char siew. I remember they first started at Guillemard Road and it was love at first bite so to speak, and it pairs perfectly with malty and rich London Pride beer which is on their menu since the Guillemard Road days.
Visited on weekend early evening around 630ish, restaurant quite filled with maybe 1 or 2 empty tables. Area inside is not that big.Order quite a few dishes to try. There wasnt alot of unique dishes tbh, quite standard Zi Char fare.Ordered the following items:1. 300 gram signature Char Siew2. Jade tofu3. Duck Ee-mien4. Sambal fried rice5. XO carrot cake6. Salted egg pork7. Butter chicken8. Sweet sour fish1. The Char Siew came with a deep dark glaze with a generous amount of black sweet sauce. The meat portion I was served had a meat ratio of roughly 70/80% lean to 30/20% fat meat. The fat does a good job of melting in your mouth. However, personal opinion is that the sauce/char siew was way too charred. It had a strong bitter charred taste that overwhelms the sweet sauce. The sauce can be quite jelak as well. Shared the char Siew with 4 ppl, and everyone just took like 2/3 pieces and was quite done with it. Not my personal type of Char Siew but I can see ppl coming for it if you really like a extremely strong char roasting.2. Jade tofu is nice, soft and tender accompanied by a well balanced mushroom sauce that wasnt too salty. Dont need rice to eat with it. Had multiple flavour profile since you can actually taste the wheatgrass instead of other restaurants that use it purely for colouring. One of the better dish of the night.3. Duck Ee-mien was quite normal, basically ee-mian in soy sauce. Not much to note.4. Sambal fried rice is great. Rice is 粒粒分明, savoury and had a slight spicy kick to it at end of each bite. Even though I dont see ikan bilis in the dish, the dish tasted almost exactly like the malay dish Nasi goreng ikan bilis but with a spicy twist to it. Rice portion is generous as well, quite big amount of rice in the bowl. But due to the sambal, rice can be slightly oily for some people.5. XO carrot cake was quite disappointing, the outer layer looks crispy but isnt. The entire dish was just mushy. Not much of the XO sauce flavour as well, tasted quite plain. Had a hard time finishing it due to the texture.6 & 7 & 8.Standard Zi Char fare, not much different, the butter chicken and salted egg pork tasted very very similar. Basically ordered a duplicate dish other than the fact its chicken and pork.Overall some hit some misses. Other than the signature Char Siew and fried rice, other dishes are quite normal. Not alot choice as well since most of the meat dishes is fried battered meat + a sauce.
A good Zi Char restaurant with affordable pricing for decent varieties of dishes. As the name suggests, their signature dish is the char siew which was juicy and tender, the roast pork however was not as good , not as crispy or flavourful as the better ones I had tried. The standard Zi char dishes were good as well but slightly towards stronger taste buds 重口味.They are also able to cook vegetarian version of their fried noodle or rice which is good if you have vegetarian friends joining.
Cozy place for a nice meal. Char Siew was excellent. Fatty, Soft and tender with the burned smell. Real Char Siew. 好叉烧👍 Now most of the Char Siew in many places are plain fake Char Siew. Boiled pork with coloring instead of the traditional method of preparation. The rest of the dishes was also good. I like the pricing too👍
5stars for the Char Siew...fat that melts in your mouth...4stars for the soup and vege egg 3treasures3stars for the ginger onion beef...not nice for me...Will be back again for other dishes.
Excellent zi char. The char siew was one of the best I’ve had - exceptional in its flavour and texture. The beef was great too - thick chunks yet tender. The cod was great - fresh and flavourful. From an earlier order, the roast pork was not bad.
Visited this shop for roasted meat. Taste was pretty normal and price was ok. 2 of us we order 1/4 duck, double roast meat combination (200g char Siew and 200gSiew yuk), one fish skin and one veggie (dou miaowith 2 fragrant rice. Fish skin was not bad. Total is $89.92 (included 10% derive charge and 7% GST). A bit too much for 2 people. The portion and dishes we ordered enough for 3 people. Double roast meat - some char Siew were too fat for me but some people might like it. Duck is so so, quite tasteless. It’s good if they serve the duck sauce to dip. Siu yuk color wasn’t attractive but very crispy. Dou miao was ok. Water $0.50 each. Overall fish skin is the best among all dishes.
Awesome char siew. Melt in your mouth meat with sufficiently charred edges. Theres nothing more you can ask for.Other dishes were not bad but nothing out of the world like the char siew. Smashed cucumber needs a new recipe though... Its just plain spicy and not vinegary enough. And the black fungus are all chopped up which totally destroyed the texture of it. I even had a very hard time trying to pick each piece up...
Charsiew is really good, the consistency is great and a good balance between the fats and meat. The rest of the dishes were quite average, roasted pork was like soggy and soft.
Char siew was a bit sweet & the roast pork was a bit chunky & hard. Overall ok service.
Had Char once when the eatery was at their previous location. this time we chose takeaway, the roasted pork lost its crispy taste , can’t compare to dine-in, their signature char Siew still retain the succulent melt in your mouth sensation. Since is CNY period, the char Siew and roasted pork minimum order is 300g. Other dishes nothing to shout about, to us seasonal Tze-Char addicts, is still Tze- Char dishes but premium ingredients, I picked up the food the next day since I went down one day before to choose n make full payment. Staff were friendly though. Char could do with a better location, maybe in a mall or food court setting, happy with the prices paid, since is CNY !
Char was quite delicious. Go for the char siew, it was almost perfect. My preference would be for it to be very slightly less fatty, however the glaze is amazing. The roast pork on the other hand was quite disappointing, as the skin was not thick enough and neither was it as crispy as it should have been. Not cheap either, budget $35/pax.
Extremely delicious Chinese roast meats at this famous joint in Jalan Besar area. Also vegetable and side dishes on offer. Surprisingly an extensive alcohol list for a Chinese restaurant. Must try if Chinese roast meats is your thing, especially the unique char siew (bbq pork).
Can’t get enough of CHAR’s Signature Char Siew. Melt-in-your mouth, the char siew is generously coated in a sticky black sauce that is a perfect blend of salty and sweet.Other than the roast meat, CHAR has LNY set menus as well as ala carte dishes to choose from for your reunion meals.Such as the Double-boiled Lotus Root Soup with Dried Oysters and Fatt Choy ($11.80), which is packed with wholesome ingredients like lotus root, pork ribs, peanuts dried oysters and fatt-choy. Or tuck into Stir-Fried CaiXin with House-cured Chinese Sausages while slurping the saucy Vegetarian Braised Ee Mian.
Char Siew and roasted pork above average but not worth for the price, can get even more delicious with lower price. The soya source chicken very disappointed not even hawker standard.
One of the best roast pork and char Siew in sg. And the other dishes like the dragon vegetables in lime juice and soy chicken are excellent too. For five of us, the bill was under $150 including fried rice and drinks, so really value for money.
Good roasts, good food! The roast meat - char siew, siew yoke, and roast chicken - were all excellent! The char siew has good amount of fat and meat and the meat itself is very tender. The sauce for the char siew is also unique - it is not only sweet, but had some slight burnt and herbal-ish flavor to it. The chicken meat is moist throughout - even the breast meat. The siew yoke has good balance of meat and fat, and the skin is crispy. The other dishes are equally good! The crispy noodles with kurobuta pork is delicious. The sliced pork is tender and the sauce is enjoyable. The dou miao with garlic is also well seasoned. It has a lot of garlic chunks and makes it very well flavored. The black garlic chicken claypot is also very very tasty. The black garlic taste is very different to the normal garlic - very rich in taste, and makes the “zhi” of the claypot dish very tasty. The chicken chunks were tender, too. There are also some cider and beers to go along with your meal.Very recently, I have also ordered for a delivery from them through their Oddle platform. Additional requests as well as additional order were adhered to and fulfilled. The food had also arrived on time. Well done!
The charsiew meat is so tender and the fat to meat ratio is perfect! Not too sweet either, worth the trip! The spring chicken is also really soft and tasty, would visit again :Perfect in a group setting
I was slightly disappointed by the char siew and roast pork. Maybe it was my expectation, but any of the better char siew places in Klang valley would beat the char siew here hands down.We had the double combination, a bowl of noodles and stir-fried dou miao. 75 bucks. A tad pricey I must say.
The Char Siew was not the HKstyle that I used to. A bit burnt and fatty but the flavor was nice...good that they didnt put sauce to spoil flavour as in many Singapore roast meat stalls...$25 a plate was steep, in my opinion. Staff were quite attentive too!
The double boiled chicken soup is gao (thickand damn fragrant. Loved it. We tried the double roast. Kinda expensive but both the roast pork and char siew are well made. Roast pork is crispy and can feel the oil drippin. Char siew well roasted with sauce, but portion is too small. Reserve before hand. Chilli is good but not enough meat to go around. And not necessary as the original flavor is good enough
Love the roasted pork and char meat (melts in the mouth)! Its located on the stretch of shop houses, not very noticable location but there is a queue outsideThe char meat abd roasted pork is highly recommended
Food wasnt as great as my first visit 3yrs ago.. But still pretty decent to dine here. Char siew is still their specialty here 👍 roast duck and meat no longer as good.
First time visit. The Char Siew is good. But I felt 88 char siew is better. But the roasted pork was surprisingly good. Match with the chili. The beef cube was tender, and it cook at medium rare. Love it. But it doesnt have the taste "dang gui" and garlic. The stir fried dry beef noodle was really good. I would eat this again next time. For fried rice, the salted fish fried rice was good, savoury. but the XO fried rice is so so, not flavourful enough. The toufu dish is was not bad either. The service here is good but is quite pricy.
Well Char is famous for their char siew.. Which didnt disappoint. Roast park is decent. But the roast duck is just average and not the best compared to those hawker center styles. Their prices are steep for a heart land location facing the main road. U shld not expect sze char rates. Its a restaunt setting so expect like crystal jade pricing. But as the food is tasty they have their regular customers..
Nice charsiew and roast pork. White rice is too dry. I went there along on Sunday for dinner. Waitresses are quite friendly. On the menu the least portion I could choose is small which can feed two. This Chinese waitress she clarified with me if I want to go for one pax set which I couldnt choose from the menu. Good experience overall.
Love the barbeque pork and roasted pork. The roasted pork is what you will expect and done really well, crispy and flavourful even without any sauces. The BBQ pork on the other hand is surprisingly soft and just melts in the mouth with the right amount of sweetness and lightly chared. Also ordered the plain egg fried rice, simple yet delicious.
Quite a nice place. Maybe parking will be a problem as I dont see any parking space nearby here at Jalan besar main road. The roast pork and char siew may not be as good as the coffeeshop one opposite near foch road, but the beef hor fun is excellent! The salted egg prawn is not bad too. Worth a try though the price is a bit more premium
Good roast pork, Char Siew and duck. Foods taste good and the place are cozy.Prices are on the high side, prepare to spend 30 per pax which must also include GST plus service charge.
Food was average, would not advise to bring intimate groups here as the noise echos through the space and it gets somewhat noisy.Surprisingly the char siew was not the highlight of our meal as the name of the restaurant would suggest, be sure to order some the eggplant as well.
Roast duck and roast pork were really amazing, so tender and juicy!! Char-sui was good, but not impressive as duck and pork. Entire experience was great, except waiting for a long time to service drinks and dishes. Great place for local food~~
My family and my sisters were here on Boxing Day for dinner. I left it to her to decide where our families should dine, and it was as good a decision as it could get. We ended up in Char along Jalan Besar. True to their name, the charred meats were great, and thats not to say that the accompanying other dishes werent as good. Dinner for 8, and under $300....what could anyone say to complain. We had fun, and dinner was great!
I come here for their char siew, and they certainly didnt disappoint. The meat is soft and succulent, the sauce is simply awesome. Their other dishes are nice too. Will be back again to try more of their other dishes and that char siew!Place is a bit small though and gets crowded easily. Had to wait a while for a table if come a bit later
The food was really awesome! Especially the Char Siew and Roast Pork! Even though its slightly on the pricey side, $7.50 per 100g, minimum order of 300g, it is well worth it! The staff were really nice as well, they were willing to wait till my friend arrived 15 minutes before closing and they continued to serve us ice water!
The char siew was good but not the roast pork unfortunately. Could have been much less fatty, crispier. Tofu and butter prawns were decent. Used a fave pay discount. Good service. There are two seatings. The later seating is 7.15 to 8.30pm. Roast meats have to be reserved. About $30+ pp.
For the quality, price and ambience, Char is hard to beat. Of course one must order the Char Siew. Which comes with a large dollop of sticky delicious sauce. The roast pork is not as good though. Try the melon soup and tell me if they actually use rock melon instead of the usual old melon because the bowled melon is still very sweet after all the boiling. Another pocket friendly item is the egg fried rice. There is no other ingredient except for eggs and rice but it is so tasty. Hope their Chinatown brunch opens soon.Returned within 2weeks from my first visit and tried more dishes. All good, except for the wine.
