Museum showcasing relics & treasures found in the nearby temple & palace ruins of Ayutthaya.
Chao Sam Phraya National Museum in Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya
Description
sadly closed when I was in Ayutthaya, for only 2 nights in Sept.22. Closed from July-Dec.2022 for reasons in sign on gate as per pic. att. There may not be another time for me as a result. Had to make do with National Museum in Bangkok. This is supposed to be good however. Mid-rating only as closed obviously (Google did have it as permanent closure, now ät least updated)
MoreAmezz.
This museum shares the history of Sukhothai. It also predicates the importance of Buddhism, Hinduism, and the evolution of Thai scripts and consonants. Its a must for Southeast Asian historians, enthusiasts, researchers like myself, and those in security studies, politics, and international relations. If we want to learn why there are wars today, perhaps we need to understand history. I summarised in just two words, "greed-jealousy", thats spellbound in our exploits, even today.
MoreIts a small museum but full of ancient artifacts.
Impressive museumPro-tip scan the QR code with each display and get all the info in English / Chinese / Thai
MoreGreat place to see ancient and precious items which very variety from sand/stone metal and pure gold. But, the museum is not allow to take photo hence I would like to recommend to visit this museum physically.
MoreIf you enjoy learning about the past, different cultures and what was compared to what is, this is most certainly the place for you. Its really hot out that way so its advisable to take a hat and a good pair of sunglasses. Enjoy. Well worth the trip. ⚘
More30baht/personVery need to be visit here.Ancient and historic object so attractiveThere get 3 building here, dont missed.
MoreQuite small considering the history that took place in Ayutthaya
Nice museum with lots of artefacts rescued from various temples around Ayutthaya. At 150 baht per person not too expensive and takes about an hour to see all 3 buildings which make up the museum.
MoreThe first museum in Thailand with national precious antiques in Ayutthaya Era
Great collection of antique buddhas found in Ayutthaya. Dont miss the room of the gold relics found in the relic chambers
MoreSmall museum whos prize exhibit is some of the treasure found below the temples (gold amulets and votive offerings etc). It doesnt have much else. Was funded by the sale of some of the treasure that was found.
MoreMore than meets the eye. Entrance fee of 150THB.. with an extensive collection of gold artifacts and art displayed in secure vaults. No photography permitted in the vaults. Slightly off the beaten track.. but still central to everything. Expect to spend about an hour here.
MoreGreat museum. You can QR code over each exhibit to hear all about them. The gold room is super interesting and the employee told us all about the artifacts. Overall excellent experience.
MoreThe only one museum which exhibit the gold of Ayuthaya period. Having the big real of buddha head from the temple of Ayutthaya and complete statues of buddha after restored from the ruin. This museum have 3 building. The main building exhibit the statue and the Ayutthaya golds. Second building is thai style build over the water. The third show the utility and art of this old period. Must visit if u want to understand the past of Thai.
MoreNever visited in many times that I went to Ayutthaya. Only to find out what Id missed big time!! Highly recommended. Also should visit Wat Chaiwattanaram before going as its how everything happened to get the feeling. It was the best museum Ive been to!
MoreI am as foreigner who seek a bit of history about the debris of temples that lies all over Ayutthaya..This really conventional like museum. Cannot give any knowledge except: hiring professional guide, or and buying the book..This museum only able to be fully function for the locals.. maybe..The staff cannot speak English in explaining level, only memorize for necessary admission matter (and the admission staff was not nice and not accommodating).I am sure all of the collections they have are precious, but because no proper meaningful explanation, it become meaningless..I suggest u to make it more interesting, with stories, with audio and visual facilities, like they did in ChiangMai City Arts & Cultural Centre .. Bring the visitor return to d past, as if we are in that age..Make our B150 admission fee worth it..
MoreSome staff help explain us about details of things and make it easier to understand.Quality vs price is very good. Even 150THB. (Thai people get advantages on education promote for only 20THB fee.)
MoreA must stop when you visit Ayutthaya! 150 baths access fee for foreigners, exposition of beautiful golden objects and lots of buddhas inside. I recommended this place.
MoreGood place to study and learn about Thai history. Many gold Buddha status are shown here..
MoreRude pushy staff at the entrance pushing for ticket buying when we havent even entered yet, and then no explanations or guidance eg about what are exhibited in the other 2 buildings. Contains the golden objects found in Wat Maha that and Ratchaburana with relatively detailed English information boards and many smaller Buddha images and other artifacts with not much information. Not a great museum unfortunately.
MoreGives a nice look at the various artifacts of Ayutthaya. You can download an app that gives you a multilingual tour of the exhibits. There are some rooms that forbid taking photos. Shoes are taken off at the entrances and there are two main exhibits. The insides are dated, but it doesnt cost much to enter
MorePresentation is pretty good in a minimalist way, So theres not a lot of exhibit but lots of detailed view of gold artifacts. Some English signs on most. There will be 50+ school kids on excursion there. Thats good. The wi-fi didnt work so all the Q-code signs were useless. Thats bad.
MoreVery interesting place with lots of history about autthaya.
Visited as part of the tour. It was reasonably interesting and the gold thats been recovered is amazing. Again, if you go you have to respect Thai beliefs. No stupid selfies and wear appropriate clothing
MoreSmall and not much of the old stuff. Entrance fee for foreigners is expensiveYou need to take your shoes off and leave them outside. No a/c inside except in the 2-3 rooms at the wings
MoreThe museum was built by public fund from precious items found in the underground pagoda tower of Wat Ratchaburana, so it was named after the king who ordered the construction of Wat Ratchaburana, Chao Sam Phraya. They exhibit antiques in different time periods, buddha images in Dvaravati, Lopburi and Ayutthaya style. Even the gold that was discovered from after the Thai-Myanmar war and burn down also got kept here. One more important thing that I want to share about this place is that outside the building, you will see a tall tree height 15-20 metres. It is the "ต้นหมัน" or if not wrong in the group of "Cordia or Geiger tree", this tree is the symbolic tree of Ayudhaya and now it is THE LAST one in Ayudhaya. That is so saddd so, pls. go there to see it to show that we all must cherish our history and some roots that create or bring us to TODAY. Thank you guys for visiting our old capital.
MoreThis place is around one hour drive from Bangkok. All precious Buddha sculptures from Ayutthaya period are preserved with this museum. Different metallic statues, ornaments used by Royal family are also found in the same place. I also saw a big statue of king Naresuan inside the museum. In short, this is an archeological sites with precious things that may trigger your curious mind on history.
MoreNice collection of gold items retrieved from the ruins. But the museums needs to improve in the story telling. The first room with golden objects in the first building has some explanations and history. The rest is just a simple description of items. On second building you only have thai descriptions. But everything had its qr code. It might be more info there...
MoreThis is a must visit place for all Ayutthaya travellers. Actually this should be the starting point. This wonderful interactive museum will give you a glimpse on the history of Ayutthaya. The original gold ornaments and Buddhist equipments will help you understand that why people from all around the world at some point in history felt like staying in Ayutthaya. The museum has an internal WiFi. It has its own app. The museum displays are tagged with qr codes. Install the app on your phone. Get a pair of earphones. Scan the codes and listen on. Take your time. Seat on the benches. Feel the history. This museum will enrich your entire Ayutthaya visit. The entire town will make more meaning to you after you step out from this museum.
MoreIn my opinion, not worth the 150 baht. If they plan to keep the entrance fee at that price, they should refurbish the museum. Or lower the rates. The exhibits were mildly interesting although the golden treasures found in the grus are the absolute highlight of the museum. Too bad you cant take photos of them. Everything else was kinda basic (saying this after visiting the National museum in Bangkok-a 200 baht i readily enjoyed).Staff were nice. It is too expensive for foreigners yet some of the pieces do not even have english translations (1 in 3 buildings have purely thai descriptions). Some passages could use some editing because of repetitions of ideas.Overall, kinda disappointed. If you want to know more about Ayutthaya as a beginner, go to the Ayutthaya Exhibit across the street. You get to learn more for free.
MoreChao Sam Phraya National Museum is the first Museum that has made from his Majesty King Rama IV preamble from the discovery of Buddha amulets and gold ornaments worth an enormous amount in a tenures Phra Prang in Wat Ratcha Burana restored in Ayutthaya in 1957. At that time his Majesty the king. and her Majesty the queen came and saw the artifacts found along and then have the royal remark to the Minister of Education and the Fine Arts Department at the time that: "Antiques and art objects in the repository of restored Phra Prang in Wat Ratcha Burana was reserved a museum to preserve and display for the public , It shouldn’t be preserved and displayed in the other. "Later on 10th December 1958, when the Fine Arts Department tunneled down to the tenures of Wat Ratcha Burana for route people to visit the murals are available area of wall paneling 4 sides easily. They unearthed another seven paneled wainscoting panels all Buddha images and many hundreds thousands individually of them. The Department of Education has approved the request for donations from the public by give the votive gifts for finance the construction of a building to safekeeping in the National Museum and exhibit artifacts from Wat Ratcha Burana by named "Chao Sam Phraya National Museum" to commemorate His Majesty 2nd Rachadhiratch (Chao Sam Phraya), who established Wat Ratcha Burana.
MoreMany artifacts from earlier eras of Ayutthaya, mostly golden jewellery, Buddhas and wood carved items.
MorePeaceful national museum you should come when you visit Ayutthaya. This place is the resources of knowledge about AY and Thailand history. Walking along the hallways you will see a plenty of artifacts and replicas.
MoreThe big temples around maybe empty, but heres where they kept the fittings and statues from decay, such as wooden doors, bronze statues, and gold artifacts from the stupa vault of Wat Ratcha!
MoreYou can learn a lot about Thailand here. For example if you are Thai you pay 20 baht to get in, but if youre a foreigner you pay 150 baht. I did not study much math in University, but a rough estimate is that is a 750% difference in admission fees. The place looked nice, and I figured Id go in if it was 100 baht. When I saw it was 150 baht, I decided while my wife went in (20 baht), Id find a place to sit and read my book. There are times when the double pricing doesnt bother me, like 50 baht for foreigner and 10 baht or free for Thai. But the discrepancy here was obscenely large, and the 150 baht was more than I was willing to pay. For the record my wife said it was good.
MoreVery good experience for knowing Ayutdhaya richness. A lot of unvaluable items from the prosperity period of Ayudhaya era. Don t miss to visit.
MoreNice museum about Thai history. Very helpful place. You can learn a lot about buddist influence to the Thai community and the history.
MoreQuite ironical actually. I saw the notice that admission fee is "150B" in English but actually at least for Thai, its 30B. The exhibition is indeed interesting and comprehensive, but information in English is very much limited. I do not recommend at least the museum hall to foreigners as they do not offer adequate service that "150B" should be honored.
MoreYou could learn a lot of buddies art and archeology between 13-18 centuries here.
MoreVery well maintained museum with lots of history behind the life of different dynasties.
MoreFrom a whole day going around in this ancient rich area the museum was a major positive blast. Jaw dropping objects can be found here! I seen only half of everything and it is hardly to grasp for me what a major collection dear rama 9 and his people display here. Words cannot discribe and pictures cannot display the importance of this museum. This history is so powerful and amazing. I wish i could go back right now but it is in the middle of the night and the museum is surely closed. I had an amazing day... i HAVE to study more and use my heart to understand what we are allowed to experiance in this area and museum. Beware you will have to take time to be able to see the ancient beauty. You will have to take your best self and all the good intentions you have to in order to understand only a little part of what is left of this megalitich past. The people who have build this land/country and these temples have suffered and worked so hard!!! Let buddha and his people take you on an adventure that will change your life. I am only allowed to display and share a little part here (there are treasure areas where we are NOT allowed to photograph for all the obvious reasons). In fact no where in the museum you are allowed to record video. Flash lights are strictly forbidden (you might damage its richness). Wear socks and not everything is wheelchair accessable. Logically the personell in this museum is more than willing to help you experiance its beauty and importance, please be patient. Take a whole day if you can for this museum and dont forget to sit outside and drink a cup of coffee, tea or snack. They have excellent treats and drinks at the parkinglot. Please enjoy and open your heart and mind before going! There are specialist tour guides to help you understand Thai and all objects displayed! Ask at the reception or call the museum for more info! For starters scan the bar code in my photos and install the museum app on your smartphone. You will also find info on the science museum there!
MoreSo many great historical pieces. Need to improve on the way to display and explain these things. And a lot of great precious are not allowed to be pictured.
MoreMy two cents about this museum:-1. The surrounding was clean and well taken care of,2. Overall GOOD amount of display items. However, when I was there, quite a number items were borrowed by other museums and why it seem like everything lump together?3. (Verylack of Thai to English translation. Better description of an item would give us a better understanding of the wats and the old city.4. Quite a lot of school children were there. I suspect this venue is kind of like an education centre too.5. Should have at least 1 guide or person which can tell you a story/ guide in this museum. Sadly, even the relics rooms (2 roomsPICs are busy with their handphone without much paying attention to you/ your questions.6. Besides the main building, the 2nd and 3rd (Thai traditional housebuildings had no visitor in it, none English translation of the artifacts and no one at the counter.7. Should be a first stop to visitor when visiting this old city. So "very" much improvement needed.
MoreA museum that has a lot of Buddha artifacts from the Kingdom of Ayutthaya Period. They dont tell you much about the history of the artifacts, you have to pay for the guided tour to get more information about the Ayutthaya Period.
MoreWhen you visit Ayutthaya. This museum offer you a close look of the old capitals artifacts. Although the collections are small but admission fee is not that expensive. This is a peaceful place to sit down and have some rest from super hot/humid Thailand weather.
MoreDecent museum with artefacts from the local temples. For travellers who are fascinated by old relicts and history its worth a visit but in my opinion its a little bit overpriced for what you get. The first and main building is very interesting but unfortunately some things are not explained in english.
MoreGreat museum. Full of Buddhism and historical stuffs.
Must visit! There are three buildings here.
